Shirou Emiya's Character & Personality

Shirou is a teenage Japanese Magus who's the adopted son of Kiritsugu Emiya. Due to trauma, Shirou has constant emptiness and suffers from tremendous survivor's guilt. As the only survivor, he feels it's unfair to the deceased to prioritize his needs before others. Thus, Shirou has a distorted sense of values where he only finds self-worth from helping people without compensation, feeling “helping people” is its own reward. In addition, he believes it's highly unfair some people survive and others don't. When it comes to receiving an injury or dying to help someone, Shirou will do it without a second thought. Everything he is thus far is the result of his dream to become a "Hero of justice" who'll save everyone regardless of what happens to his life. Shirou is extremely stubborn once he sets out to accomplish something. He'll stubbornly defend his viewpoints, no matter how wrong they may seem to others, to the point of causing them great mental anguish. Although Shirou does his best to help others, if he feels someone brought about their own ruin, he'll watch instead of helping. He can range from being sarcastic to blunt quite easily and his poor body language makes it difficult for others to recognize when he's which, even leading some to think he's being dense or ignorant. Eventually, Shirou begins to see the hypocrisy in his ideals. Though he refuses to give them up entirely, he works his way towards a middle ground where he'll strive towards fulfilling ideals, despite knowing they're impossible to achieve.

Emiya (Archer's) Character & Personality

Emiya is thoroughly cynical and nihilistic. At the same time, he's devoted and protective. Emiya is even a little childish to the point it makes him hard to hate. He doesn't lie, but he does keep secrets and tell half truths. Emiya means well and is capable of being nice, but is often sarcastic, especially when giving advice. He can't approve of becoming a Hero of Justice due to his own experience, but he can't deny it for the same reasons. Emiya is a bitter person not because of his life, but due to being a Counter Guardian, a being who's forced to "clean up the messes humanity has made". Although he was constantly betrayed by those around him, he never held grudges towards anyone. Regardless, Emiya despaires over how he could never live up to his ideal of "saving everyone regardless of friend or enemy". He chose to become a guardian believing he could save as many people as possible. This was true, but the Counter Force sent him to points in time where it believed humanity was on the brink of collapse. There, Emiya had to kill any and every person it deemed to be the perpetrators despite if they were good or evil. Thus, his life's work was a continuation of sacrificing a minority for the good of the majority. In the end, Emiya was betrayed by the one ideal he believed in. Following Unlimited Blade Works, he accepted while his old ideals were immature they weren't wrong. Since then, Emiya mellowed out considerably and is overprotective. As a guardian, he has subsequent summons into all eras throughout history regardless of past or future. Thus, the record of the Heroic Spirit Emiya on the Throne has very fragmented memories. Emiya claims his memory is confused with his incomplete natured summoning, but this is only half truth. He forgot Rin Tohsaka, but remembers her when she introduces herself. It's a statement from his heart filled with "much endearment close to insanity". Emiya claims he no longer has Shirou's memory, but remembers the day Kiritsugu Emiya saved him. He also fondly remembers when Saber was summoned, which he'll always recall vividly. Beyond this, Emiya isn't interested in video games, but he's willing to play once he gets started. He also gains a lot of joy and pride in housework, especially cooking. However, he denies he enjoys doing them.
