Album & EP Recommendations
My word, the music world has well and truly spoiled us this week!
The past seven days has seen a colossal avalanche of new releases, so much so I’ve barely had chance to keep up with it all. Although this is not the full list of everything from the past seven days, here are the 16 (yes, 16!) new releases I’ve enjoyed the most this week.
As there is so much to get through the rundowns are (mostly) a bit shorter than normal and there is no single Album of the Week, instead I simply recommend checking out whichever album or track sounds most appealing depending on your preferred taste.
So without further ado then, here’s what’s good:
Californian Soil by London Grammar
It’s been four years since the release of London Grammar’s last record Truth Is A Beautiful Thing - an album that I enjoyed, but I’ll admit also left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed coming off the back of their incredible breakout debut, If You Wait. As it turns out, the band themselves were also having a tough time around that period, with front woman Hannah Reid in particular battling relentless industry sexism, as well as the persistent physical pain caused by her fibromyalgia condition. With this being the case, it is amazing that the young indie-pop trio have made it to their third album at all, let alone delivering what is their best work to date.
Opening on a grand, string-drenched Intro, the record soon morphs into the sun-soaked guitars and soaring orchestration of the album’s glorious title track. It marks an early highlight as Reid catches the audience up with the tribulations of the last few years – “I left my soul on Californian soil.” From there the album doesn’t really let up as the band move through a series of career-defining tracks – the gorgeous contemporary groove of Missing, the dance-influenced How Does It Feel, the chilled-out ambience of the dreamy Baby, It’s You and the sublime, stripped-back closer America.
However, the album’s strongest moment comes when Reid confronts music industry sexism head on with defiant anthem Lord It’s A Feeling. Beginning with some twinkly xylophone, before evolving into an atmospheric synth-laced backdrop where Reid pulls no punches:
“I saw the way you made her feel, like she should be somebody else,
I know you think the stars align for you and not for her as well,
I undеrstand, I can admit that I have felt those things mysеlf”
The cutting lyrics against some blinding quiet rave instrumentation leaves quite the impression, as does this sterling record in general. After a slight misstep, London Grammar have well and truly rediscovered themselves and they have honestly never sounded better – a truly incredible album.
If You Could Have It All Again by Low Island
Oxford electo-pop outfit Low Island are another band that have defied expectations to get to this point. This, their debut album, was not recorded in a professional music studio – in fact, the vocals were recorded in a bedroom cupboard of all places. The band themselves don’t even have a manager or a record label. In every sense of the word, they are a truly independent band. For a self-financed, self-produced effort, If You Could Have It All Again is a quite remarkable first outing.
From melodic, uplifting opener Hey Man, the record quickly jumps into spoken word electro punk banger What Do You Stand For, featuring acid-drenched synths and a dancefloor-ready groove. Fans of FIFA 21 will recall Don’t Let the Light In, with the glitchy pulse of recent single Who’s Having the Greatest Time also standing out. That said, it’s the smooth, infectious sway of I Do It For You that still pulls me in the most.
Having followed the band since their early EPs, I’ve been rooting for Low Island for a while now and this is one debut album I was highly anticipating this year. Safe to say, my expectations have been met – this is a fantastic, accomplished record, which leaves me eager to see where they go next.
The Greatest Mistake Of My Life by Holding Absence
There was a time when the difficult second album used to be a thing, but listening to the sophomore effort from Welsh rock band Holding Absence this week, I’m really not sure that exists anymore. After a dramatic and impressive self-titled debut two years ago, the band have wasted little time taking things up a notch, with this new album cinematic and masterfully produced from beginning to end.
From standout singalong anthems like Afterlife and In Circles, to the album’s epic seven-minute penultimate track Mourning Song, The Greatest Mistake of My Life shows a band pushing themselves and driving forward with ambition at every opportunity. In a year packed with outstanding rock and metal albums already, this is most definitely another one you can add onto that list. Soaring, impressive and demanding of repeat listens.
We Forgot We Were Dreaming by Saint Raymond
It’s been six long years since Nottingham-born singer-songwriter Callum Burrows, AKA Saint Raymond, released his debut album. However it seems the time away has been well spent as this long-awaited follow-up finds Burrows in fine form, with this album packed to the brim with catchy, glossily produced indie-pop anthems.
From the brilliant title track that opens the record, to the bouncy riffs of Right Way Round, Talk and Solid Gold, to more subdued and heartfelt moments like Only You, this album will have you smiling, singing your heart out and dancing your troubles away.
Flu Game by AJ Tracey
AJ Tracey may have only been three years old when Michael Jordan was winning NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, but that hasn’t stopped him making a record influenced by the legendary icon and his famous 1997 Flu Game. Like many others including myself, grime superstar AJ Tracey spent lockdown watching the brilliant The Last Dance documentary, and this record weirdly works as a fantastic unofficial companion, but also just a great summer rap record.
McCartney III Imagined by Paul McCartney
Even if like me you completely missed Sir Paul McCartney’s 2020 album McCartney III, it’s well worth checking out this reimagining, where he has called on the help of some of his famous musician pals. This is a real who’s who line up of guest features including Beck, Khurangbin, St. Vincent, Blood Orange, Phoebe Bridgers, Damon Albarn, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak and more, making for quite a fascinating mix of sounds and styles.
Moratorium (Broadcasts from The Interruption) by Enter Shikari
And finally on the albums front this week, genre-benders Enter Shikari have released a brilliant compilation of all their lockdown live performances, headlined by an incredible string-tinged acoustic version of The Dreamer’s Hotel and a beautifully stripped-back “At Home” rendition of Live Outside.
Tracks of the Week
Introvert by Little Simz
Wow, wow and wow again. Still fairly fresh off the back of her masterful, Mercury Prize nominated third album Grey Area, this week British rapper Little Simz released the first taste of her next record in the form of this epic and triumphant opening track. At six minutes in length, this majestic and operatic political anthem aims to grab the listener by the collar and shake them awake. Without a doubt, one of the best songs of the year so far, the powerful video for which you can view above.
Smile by Wolf Alice
The second taste of their forthcoming album Blue Weekend, Smile continues Wolf Alice’s pattern for alternating Loud/Soft releases, with this one featuring buzzy guitars, punky vocals and a hypnotic chorus melody.
Beautiful Beaches by James
Although written off the back of the California wildfires that impacted front man Tim Booth’s local community, the lyrics on the band’s latest anthem purposefully offer a dual meaning, giving hope to those dreaming of a post-lockdown getaway and fresh start.
He Said She Said by CHVRCHES
The Scottish trio made their much-anticipated return this week, with Lauren Mayberry also sharing her experiences of sexism on this arena-ready synth-pop banger.
Matty Healy by Georgia Twinn
Georgia Twinn delivers an infectiously catchy break-up anthem, inspired by an ex-boyfriend, who’s most interesting feature was supposedly looking like the 1975 frontman.
Kill It by Vukovi
Underground Scottish rock outfit Vukovi’s new single is so good, they even managed to get KILL IT trending over the weekend of its release. Masterfully produced with big bold riffs and trancey synths, this one just sounds huge.
Can’t Carry On by Gruff Rhys
The latest solo single from the former Super Furry Animals frontman is a stunning, super-melodic tune with an instant chorus you’ll be singing before the track has even finished its first play.
Ceremony by Deftones
One of the highlights off their last album Ohms, the nu-metal rockers have now delivered a cinematic new video directed by horror legend Leigh Whannell. Check it out!
Chasing Birds by Foo Fighters
And finally this week, Dave Grohl and company released a trippy new animated video for this Medicine At Midnight cut to help celebrate 420 in their own unique way. Again, well worth a watch!

Once Upon A Dream (remix) - Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky x Reader
Summary: A Sleeping Beauty/Winter Soldier remix, featuring the reader as a SHIELD agent who might have powers (or just a really finely tuned intuition)
Warnings: None. If you’ve seen and enjoyed the Captain America films, you shouldn’t find anything troubling here.
The third chapter of my Fairy Tale AU for @moonbeambucky’s 5k Writing Challenge! Life seems to be keeping me pretty consistent at publishing a chapter every two weeks, despite my attempts to go faster. That bug I picked up laid me low for longer than I would have liked -- that’s an unfortunate side effect of fibromyalgia, stuff hits me harder and lasts longer than it would for regular people. I promise I am working hard and hopefully will be able to publish more frequently in the near future ❤️
Tumblr media
Chapter 3
Less than 24 hours later, you were rendezvousing at Pentagon City mall with Steve and Natasha, and trying to come up with a plan on the fly. While they headed to the Apple Store in an attempt to decode the contents of the zip drive, you were tasked with finding a getaway car. As you scoured the parking structure for the perfect vehicle, your mind was racing with the events of the last 12 hours – Director Fury was dead, and the three of you were now on the run from the organization you’d once considered your safe haven.
I still can’t believe he’s dead, you thought, shaking your head. Your thoughts kept drifting to those final moments, watching helplessly as the doctors struggled vainly to save him. If you hadn’t seen it with your own eyes, you wouldn’t have believed it. If only I’d gotten in touch with Maria sooner, or been able to really make her understand.
Yet, even as these thoughts floated through your head, the rational part of your mind reminded you that you had contacted her with plenty of time to initiate a contingency plan. You’d definitely done everything you could.
Unfortunately, sometimes that’s still not enough.
You sighed and tried to refocus. You hadn’t even slept well, because of course you hadn’t had one of those nice dreams where you and Bucky cuddled in hammocks on the beach. No, instead you had to dream that you were wandering the dimly-lit hallways of a creepy old building, searching for someone, becoming more and more desperate to find them. You always woke up from those kinds of dreams feeling disoriented and horribly, terribly alone.
Which was definitely not helping things right now.
You finally targeted the perfect truck – a Chevy Silverado Z71 that would be able to handle whatever terrain or road conditions lay before you, all without calling attention to itself or its passengers – and were in the middle of hotwiring it when your phone beeped with a text from Nat.
Hope ur rdy 4 us, company’s here [kissy face]
You chuckled. Of course, even when she was in mortal danger, Nat always had time to send an emoji.
You hurried to finish your task, praying that whoever had been dispatched to bring the three of you in would stay busy inside the mall instead of wandering out here. At the very least, you were confident that your intuition would let you know if you were in immediate danger. Finally, the engine roared to life, and you dove into the driver’s seat.
You pulled up to the 1st floor mall exit, the squeal of the tires echoing throughout the garage, just as your friends came barreling through the door.
“Howdy, Strangers. Need a lift?”
Steve didn’t even react to your pithy greeting; instead, he opened your door, taking you by surprise for once. “Hop in the back, I’ll drive.” When you didn’t move immediately, he clarified, “I know where we’re going and how to get there; we’ll fill you in on the road.” With a nod, you clambered into the backseat, and in minutes you were on 395 headed (roughly) north.
“So…” You leaned forward between the seats and blew a bubble with the gum you’d stolen from Nat’s pocket. When it popped, you prodded, “What’s the plan?”
Nat stretched a leg up on the dashboard and smirked, her eyes on Steve. “We’re taking a little trip down memory lane.”
“What, like Brooklyn? That’s like…” You tried to calculate the distance, but quickly gave up. “…a million hour drive.”
Steve rolled his eyes at both of you, but the split-second twitch of his lips told you he wasn’t really mad about your teasing. “We couldn’t crack the zip drive, but we were able to trace where it came from: Camp Lehigh.”
At the blank look on your face, Nat took pity on you. “New Jersey.”
You sat back with a huff.
“I think I would have preferred Brooklyn.”
Steve shook his head and glanced at you in the rearview mirror. “Me too, to be honest.”
You sagged against the window, watching trees and cars speed past. At least the drive would be somewhat scenic; that’s something, right? You were just about to ask Nat to turn on the radio, hoping to find some good road trip tunes, when she spoke up again.
“I have a question for you, Rogers.” She studied him for a second before quickly adding, “Which you do not have to answer. I feel like if you don't answer it though, you're kind of answering it, you know?”
He cut off her rambling. “What?” His tone, while exasperated, didn’t sound annoyed so much as amused.
“Was that your first kiss since 1945?”
You almost swallowed your gum. “WHAT?!”
Grabbing her arm, you practically yelled in her ear, “Did you kiss Steve???” You turned to the now bright-red super soldier. “Did you kiss Nat?????”
“No! I mean, yes, technically, but – ugh! It was a diversionary tactic!!” Flustered Steve was always your favorite, and you fought to hide your grin.
“Aww come on, no need to be coy. I know you felt something,” Nat cooed flirtatiously, fluttering her eyelashes, and he looked like he might combust. You would have started cracking up if you weren’t so eager to hear more details.
Your grip on Nat’s arm tightened and you shook her a little, and you couldn’t resist adding a little teasing of your own. “All this time we’ve been wondering why he won’t go out with any of the girls we try to set him up with. Now we know, it’s because he’s been sweet on you!”
Steve squawked, turning even redder and clenching the wheel so hard you were afraid he might wrench it off. “It – it’s not like that!! We saw the Strike Team, they were searching the mall for us, and we needed to avoid them so the civilians would be safe….. And then we were about to pass Rumlow on the escalator, and then Natasha here said that public displays of affection make people uncomfortable and…” He trailed off, and the whole thing was so funny, you couldn’t hold your laughter in anymore.
Tumblr media
Camp Lehigh was abandoned and overgrown, and definitely far from welcoming. You tried to squint your eyes and visualize a skinny pre-serum Steve running laps or striving to complete an obstacle course, using pictures and footage you’d seen in the Smithsonian exhibit to help anchor the scene. The image never quite crystallized, though; you always had trouble truly envisioning Steve as that small, scrawny figure in the photos. He’d been such a solid, powerful figure for as long as you’d known him.
Plus, from the minute you entered the camp, your senses had been on high alert, which really didn’t help your imagination either. You were overwhelmed with a really bad feeling, and knew danger was lurking somewhere nearby. You couldn’t identify the source, though, because it didn’t seem to be coming from a specific direction.
Except maybe…down? But that didn’t make any sense.
“What is it?” Nat had been in the middle of announcing that this was a dead end, when suddenly her tone changed. You turned to see Steve stalking towards a bunker, Nat trailing behind him.
“Army regulations forbid storing ammunition within five hundred yards of the barracks. This building is in the wrong place.” Thank goodness Steve knew rules and regulations like the back of his hand, or you might not even have noticed anything was out of place.
He smashed the lock with his handy shield, and the three of you entered the cold, musty building. Shivering, you brought up the rear, severely disliking the way it felt like a mausoleum.
Steve flicked a switch, and ancient fluorescent lights flickered aglow, illuminating an unassuming office space of some sort. Clunky old desks, filing cabinets, and office chairs were arrayed throughout the room; thick dust and cobwebs coated every surface, making it clear that no living being had been in here in a very long time.
And, inevitably, your feeling of impending doom increased.
Glancing around, you spied a large symbol on the wall just as Nat did, and realized that this must have been where SHIELD began, all those years ago. You supposed it made sense; Captain America began here too, and this had been their homebase of sorts. Of course when they came back from overseas, they would have chosen somewhere familiar, somewhere the seeds of SHIELD had already begun to sprout.
You followed your partners into a library or storage room of some sort, where a trio of prominently displayed photographs confirmed your hunch. You recognized all three people from the Smithsonian exhibit; but apparently Nat had never been, because her next question made you cringe.
“Who's the girl?”
You purposely avoided making eye contact with Steve, because you already knew how he must be feeling. This camp, the place where they first met and got to know each other, was already brimming with memories of her – and now her face was on the wall. Young. Vibrant. Fierce. Just the way he probably remembered her. He’d been to see her just yesterday, confronted yet again with the fact that a lifetime had passed him by in the blink of an eye; and he was left with an obsolete snapshot of a moment in time, and an ache for what could have been.
There was a long, awkward pause, and then Steve literally sidestepped the question by striding deeper into the room.
You’d just opened your mouth to whisper a quick-but-vague explanation to Nat, when he pointed to a cobwebbed bookshelf and pondered aloud, “If you're already working in a secret office...” He paused to insert his hand into the space between the bookcases, and then, with surprising ease, slid them apart, revealing a hidden alcove. “…why do you need to hide the elevator?”
A sudden spike of anxiety shot through you, and you knew that only danger waited below. But the feeling was different than the one you usually got when you were about to be physically attacked – and before you could pinpoint what was different about it, the elevator ride had ended and the doors were already opening into a cavernous basement filled with ancient computer relics.

Today we meet another wonderful author friend of mine. I hope you will enjoy getting to know a bit more about her, as I have. All of the authors are providing links to both purchase their books and follow them on social media. Take a moment and explore  by signing up on their sites.
   meet Susan…
Susan writes in the horror, paranormal, suspense, medical genres. Her books are available in Amazon, Amazon KU and many other sites. Here are her links: Website, Schiffer Books, Amazon, Goodreads & Pinterest.
When did you start writing? I began writing freelance articles for blogs and other websites in 2006. More interested in fiction writing, I started working on two novels – a paranormal romance and a medical thriller. As to why I began writing, I started journaling after being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. My writing led me to the Virginia Writers Club, where I found many mentors and help along the way. I have been a member since 2006 and currently serve as 1st Vice President of the State organization.
Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? I love all the nurses in my stories. Being an OR nurse myself, I love to use my experiences in the medical field to twist into something they never saw it coming. The nursing profession is one of honor, and this is my way of giving recognition back to those awesome nurses who work tirelessly each and every day. I must admit some of my nurse peers, who have read my stories, think I am putting on a good front for being a normal person. They had no idea of my twisted imagination and told me they now know not to upset me in the future. Mw ha ha ha!
What were the key challenges you faced when writing this book? For Haunted Charlottesville and Surrounding Counties, my current book, the biggest challenge was getting to all of the sites and getting enough research to make an entry. Some didn’t have a lot of backstory, and some didn’t want to participate in the book. This was fine, I used pieces that were already public knowledge so I didn’t step on any toes. Another challenge was to compile all the information into one book. It took me a while to figure out how to write, denote different chapter headers, caption photographs, assemble an index, and keep track of a large bibliography page. I learned many of these for the first time writing Haunted Charlottesville. I feel much better having had the experience going forward than not. It has made writing the second book of this genre much easier.
What do you hope readers take away from your books? For my fiction stories, I hope they share that shock at the end when I twist everything they thought they knew. Maybe they will also get feelings of familiarity with some of them. For my non-fiction, I want readers to experience my love of travel and seeing new places. I toured Virginia extensively for Haunted Charlottesville and my upcoming book to visit haunted places and learn their history. In two other books, Handbook for the Dead and Paranormal Encounters, I make mention of trips to other counties in Virginia and even other countries. Even if you don’t visit any of the places named, take a ghost tour in whatever city you find yourself visiting. I love learning the history behind the locations and what caused them to be troubled today.
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have? Awesome question.  I have many short stories that are not published with several in the works. One paranormal romance novel – ½ done One medical thriller novel – ½ done One haunted location book – 1 chapter to go as well as compiling all the material and photographs. I tend to work on several things at once because I get bored quite easily. Hence, this why I have so many still in progress. I will be finished with the haunted book by the end of this month, and that will free me up to work on other projects that are pending. I really want to finish the paranormal romance that has a witch, wizard, and maybe even a vampire that showed up – I am not sure from where yet. He is a charming fellow though.
Is anything in your book based on real-life experiences or purely all imagination? Fiction stories – The Sparkling Floor is based somewhat in reality. What nurse hasn’t dreamed of revenge on a disrespectful surgeon? I just fictionalized it up a bit. I Thought You Did is based upon all those Rush week antics colleges put the students through to join a fraternity. My son was in college at the time going through rush week, and this story popped into my head thinking about the different ways to initiate a pledge. Blurred Line is something we have all faced as writers: Writer’s Block. I didn’t plan this one at all, I just wrote as it came out and the story is as you see it. It was nominated for a Bran Stoker Award in 2016. Fun fact: It was the only story I ever wrote that I really didn’t like. Everyone loves this story, but me. Isn’t that weird? Non-fiction books –These are all real and full of the experiences I had at each location. Through investigating and interviewing, I learned a lot of history and the back story on each place. Some of it was quite fascinating, while some was downright heart-breaking.
Favorite Quote –This one has to be from the great and awesome Yoda: Do or Do Not. There is no Try. I do follow this advice daily. I am also convinced of a statement from Jim Rohn: If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you find an excuse. What this says to me is people who have a goal will not let anything interfere with reaching that accomplishment. Those who don’t will make an excuse as to why they can’t reach it. CAN’T is the one four letter word that is not in my vocabulary. I will find a way around all obstacles, if necessary. I want to be a doer, not a tryer. How about you?
A final word from Susan… Thanks to everyone, especially the readers and to Victoria for the opportunity to share my thoughts with you. I hope you are staying safe during these trying times. What better way is there to pass the time than selecting a great story to lose touch with reality, if only for a while. Enjoy the adventure and getaway, you can go explore new places and meet new people from the comfort of your own favorite reading spot. Please feel free to contact me  if you have any questions or concerns. I love to hear from my readers. Please take good care in the meantime and Be Well!
I hope you are finding these interviews as much fun as I am. I love finding out more about the authors I read. There are many more great writers to be included in this series, so stick around. And watch for a special treat…A free short story from me about the legend behind my new series that starts April 25th!
Victoria LK Williams

Changing the Energetic Experience of the Body-- A Yogic Approach to Healing Chronic Pain
Can changing our assumption of the energised measurement of the body assistance ease persistent pain conditions?
In this interview, yoga exercise specialist and physiotherapist Marlysa Sullivan reviews the user interface between new explorations right into the neuroplasticity of pain, and the old scientific research of Tantra Hatha Yoga. The emphasis of Tantra Hatha Yoga exercise lies in developing adjustment and makeover by changing the energetics of the body. Marlysa demonstrates how teaching pupils to interact with, instead than react to, the flow of energy and also feeling in the body can open up the gateway to higher liberty and relief from pain.
Q. Marlysa, you are educated as a physical therapist, yet have now dedicated on your own 100 percent to working as a yoga educator and yoga therapist. What motivated that journey?
Marlysa Sullivan: Well, as a physical therapist, I was constantly actually thinking about a lot more complicated individuals, especially those with chronic pain, like chronic reduced neck and back pain, headaches or fibromyalgia. Yet also though I took a great deal of physical therapy proceeding education as well as was trained by a great deal of wonderful physical therapists, I constantly felt like I was really missing out on a substantial piece of the challenge to be able to truly assist this team of people.
So I began to check out yoga, but it wasn't up until I satisfied Yoganand (Michael Carroll), of Pranakriya Yoga that I felt I had discovered just what I had actually been missing out on. Via studying with him, I learned the psychological as well as psychological energetics of what takes place to us in discomfort. When we could comprehend this multidimensional method to who we are, we could have even more of a transformational healing.
That was my motivation. I started to experience and also comprehend that there was a level of adjustment that we can access from someplace else deep inside. I found out that there was a link between the mind as well as the body, yet also in the energy underneath. He yaps about producing modification by transforming the power. This is an interior experience of change which then permits a change in our thoughts, our feelings, and also our entire physical being. And also it was truly an integrative, reflective method of asana and also Pranayama.
Q. Yoganand comes from the Kripalu Yoga tradition. He has created his own system of yoga.
Marlysa Sullivan: Yes, he calls his style of training Pranakriya yoga exercise, which is based on his analysis and also experiences of Swami Kripalu's work and also teaching. He actually stresses that we have to create a strong technique, a solid witness, a solid container. When we have actually developed a strong sufficient container psychological and body, then we can dive in and also understand our experiences as well as let them alter. When you enjoy what develops inside, then you can permit whatever arises to arise. I could change the way I'm re-acting, to make sure that I could transform the method I'm engaging with physical, psychological, emotional stimulus.
Q. Because you have actually incorporated this into your job, are you still practicing as a physiotherapist, or you completely concentrated on yoga exercise therapy?
Marlysa Sullivan: One hundred percent yoga therapy now. At the exact same time, one of my truly strong enthusiasms is incorporating this into more current biomedical job as well as scientific researches. So when we take a look at the field of chronic discomfort, we're checking out what occurs in the body and also the nerve system. We incorporate with exactly what is being finished with psychology and injury, Tantra Hatha Yoga exercise is this amazing model that we can use to deal with even more persistent conditions. We could utilize the language of the nervous system along with the language of psychology to assist people understand what the ancient yogis were teaching us."
Q. You talk regarding the integration of Tantra, Hatha Yoga, and also the previous scientific searchings for concerning chronic discomfort. So just how do we produce that bridge, at the very least for Western minds, between the void of Tantra Hatha Yoga and also chronic pain?
Marlysa Sullivan: If we take a look at the field of physical treatment and pain science, there are modifications that occur in the nerve system in persistent pain. And also they create usual patterns of bone and joint imbalances. We could look at the language of the worried system as far as the sensitization that takes place in persistent pain as well as the development of musculoskeletal imbalances.
Then, we can likewise use the language of psychology, chatting about understanding just what happens in injury, what occurs to the nervous system, looking at the windows of resistance to experiences, worried system irregularity and also resilience. If we tie those 2 fields together, the philosophy of Tantra Hatha Yoga exercise aids to truly integrate those two. We can utilize methods in Tantra Hatha Yoga to focus extra on that particular physical aspect of sensitization via asana. We can use practices of meditation as well as Pranayama to concentrate much more on the psychological facet. But then, we can also look at this underlying dimension of energy, as well as how that plays a role in exactly what we feel and just how we regard bodily sensations.
Q. As I understand it, there's an altering understanding in the clinical field of chronic pain and exactly what triggers it. Specifically, there's some interesting job being done on the nature of pain as it associates with neuroplasticity. Could you tell us regarding that?
Marlysa Sullivan: Yes, it's very interesting. Researchers are discovering that the nerve system gets animated in chronic discomfort, which indicates that the nerves and also paths are activated a lot more easily. There's much less inhibition of details, so people perceive even more pain as well as they experience more pain.
Over time, there's also changes in our assumption as well as our capability to be familiar with components of our body, to understand where they are in area. There's actual modifications that take place in chronic pain in the mind and nerve system, which lead to better nerves sensitization, and also reduced resistance to sensation, so people get even more quickly overloaded.
So part of exactly what we do through asana and also pranayama is start to deal with enhancing the windows to resistance to feeling, which is mosting likely to transform that sensitization of the nerves. As well as because Tantra Hatha Yoga exercise concentrates on assisting people establish more of a witness recognition in how they view and also react to physical and psychological feelings, it could be a really powerful tool for individuals with persistent pain.
Q. Are you using this in dealing with people with a large range of pain conditions?
Marlysa Sullivan: Yes, I see people with fibromyalgia, rheumatoid joint inflammation, osteo arthritis, persistent lower back pain, disc herniation, migraine headaches as well as chronic neck discomfort. Generally, the people I see have those problems as well as they likewise have some stress and anxiety or depression that they're functioning with.
Q. Can you offer an instance of just how you 'd use this approach to mentor yoga exercise to collaborate with a person with back pain?
Marlysa Sullivan: The physical, the musculoskeletal evaluation as well as the physical piece of their reduced pain in the back certainly is constantly the area to begin. That actually figures out as well as drives which asana I have them do. But after that, the way that I have them do the asana as well as Pranayama techniques and also reflection methods is extra guided to the energetics. For instance, I may desire a person to do a bridge present. Depending on what their hidden power is, you could have them do different variants of bridge pose: you can have them do a rolling bridge or you might have them hold bridge posture with a lot of security. Or you can have them stay in bridge position with a concentrate on the breath. For instance, if you have somebody that tends to tighten up way too much and guard in response to reinforcing, as opposed to focusing on muscle engagement, you could have them concentrate on the breath and also learning to allow go and also release.
Q: Interesting. So do you simply watch your trainees to see exactly what is required as they undergo the method? Or do you have a dialogue visiting exactly what's occurring with them?
Marlysa Sullivan: I generally have a discussion, since there's only so much that you can distinguish looking at a person. To comprehend the internal experience of the person and also just how they're responding as well as responding makes a huge distinction. So I ask straightforward concerns like "what are you noticing," "exactly how are you noticing that," "can you be keeping that?" This aids produce a meditation around it the sensations in the body, and you can then go the next action as well as ask people, "can you be with whatever feeling you're feeling and include breath?" or "can you include a visualization, a word, a picture?" ... So you're including a great deal of the introspective and also pranayama techniques within the asana to transform the energised experience of the asana.
Q. What are a few of the results that you are observing?
Marlysa Sullivan: With my patients with lower neck and back pain and also neck pain and also headaches, I've definitely seen progress. I've seen individuals who were extremely terrified of doing even standing positions actually obtain in tuned to their stamina to the factor where they have the ability to go getaways and do a whole lot of things in their life that they couldn't do before. I've likewise seen individuals start to actually establish even more of a witness to the feelings in their mind as well as body as well as find out to control their anxiety with that. Many individuals additionally start to recognize how their musculoskeletal imbalances are carried out by their ideas. They discover, "Oh, every time I'm at work as well as this happens, I feel this in my psoas," or, "I feel this in my jaw," or, "I feel this below." And once they get to that realization, they can start to transform the mental-emotional patterns that's triggering the physical tightness and also pain.
Marlysa Sullivan, P.T. runs a private yoga exercise therapy method in Atlanta, GA. Her works as a yoga therapist is led by her strong passion for combining the further aspects of yoga exercise and anatomy and also integrating that with clinical trainings regarding body and mind. She routes the Pranakriya Yoga exercise Therapy program with Yoganand Michael Carroll and also teaches this program at studios throughout the country. Sullivan likewise shows the assimilation of yoga exercise right into physical therapy at Mercer College and Georgia State University in addition to the psychology of yoga exercise at the graduate level at West Georgia University.
