one thing i love about birds of prey is how it lets the women be vicious.
in every single fight scene, it's not sexualized, it's not even really done for aesthetics, but it is completely done to emphasize just how dangerous and capable they all are.
obviously it's stylized, because it's fighting for film. it's impossible to have a completely realistic fight scene in a movie (but honestly fuck realism anyway), but it doesn't demean them.
the use of the noise (their voices, breaking bones) when their fighting, on top of the screaming, their facial expressions, all makes the violence, one, much more real than the usual gliding through fight scenes, hair all messy and undone, and two, just reminds you that they are trained killers, and not the eye candy that every guy in the film treats them as.
overall, let women be violent and capable and break both the legs of any guy who decides to be a douchebag.
i love you mullet obi wan kenobi ewan mcgregor. i love you blonde twink phillip morris ewan mcgregor. i love you hopeless romantic christian ewan mcgregor. i love you bearded daddy obi wan kenobi ewan mcgregor. i love you gay murderous roman sionis ewan mcgregor. i love you soft boi christopher robin ewan mcgregor. i love you aggressive french accent lumiere ewan mcgregor. i love you random cowboy at the fair ewan mcgregor. i love you ewan mcgregor.
Forget about the lore, what I wanted to see more of from Madame Web was that week Ben Parker (as portrayed by Adam Scott) spent looking after both his very pregnant sister-in-law AND three random, rambunctious teenage girls.
speaking of birds of prey (and the fantabulous emancipation of one harley quinn) do you have any other movies like that you can recommend? (as in a movie focused on women and clearly written by a woman lol)
p.s u ever think about how great that moment is when harley gives canary a hair band mid fight?? i love that bit so much
I think about that moment all the time!!! That one moment had more to say about solidarity, empathy and empowerment between women than the entirety of Barbie (2023), honestly!!! It's so simple and cool! Also I still maintain that Harley and Dinah were such Girlfriends™ like they were so very gay!
Also, I saw this message the other day and you reminded me that months ago I started a Letterboxd list of girl gang cinema! So I decided to finish it - here it is! Movies very much like BOP !
