Fluent Freshman - Part 07

The thing about Nicky knowing that FF knows Russian and therefore understands every single excruciatingly sweet, ear-reddingly spicy, or shockingly mundane thing that Andrew and Neil say to one another is that he is objectively the 3rd worst person to know this secret.

First place is, of course, Andrew Minyard the man who has now asked him about his family 3 times in the last week and a half. FF doesn’t really care if Andrew goes after the majority of his ‘family’ since it’s just his step brothers and step dad but Andrew might go after his Grandma too so he just says “We don’t talk” every time it comes up and deletes his entire chat history with his grandma that way Andrew won’t know how close they are. If that means that Andrew thinks that no one would look for him if he happened to disappear into a shallow grave FF doesn’t know. He’s already doomed so the least he can do is save his gran.

Second place is, of course, Captain Neil. Captain has mentioned quite a few times that a lot of people stay with friends or people they’re close with over Thanksgiving break. It’s meaner than Captain Neil usually would be off of the Court reminding FF that he has friends but none close enough who would want to spend a holiday with him. He plans to go see his Gran for Thanksgiving and she plans to feed him a truly ridiculous amount of food. It’s the same plan he’s had pretty much every year since he was 13.

Third place is Nicky Hemmick. Nicky is a very nice guy who got him a paperboy to hyperventilate into a couple times and would absolutely never intentionally OUT somebody and compromise their safety! Nicky’s talked with FF about some of his background so FF has full confidence that it’s never going to be something that Nicky intentionally outs to anyone. But there are two main reasons why Nicky is the third worst person to find out about this secret.

The first reason is that Nicky Hemmick just unabashedly loves gossip. FF has heard that with the graduation of the girls the previous year had gone Allison Reynolds who had multiple running bets on multiple teammates and a whole cache of gossip. Now Nicky has access to the ultimate accidental gossip magnet in the man who no one notices, who knows any language the Foxes speak and is too awkward to get up and leave when they start talking.

Nicky will never tell another soul his secret but he also HAS to know what Neil and Andrew are saying to one another and when Nicky lies to cover for him the charge is one free conversation translation.

He’s absolutely hooked on getting translations the since the first time he had asked what Andrew and Neil are hissing at one another one morning practice.

FF translated it awkwardly feeling like a creep and like he’s invading their privacy but Nicky had helped him eat the four slavic letter flashcards he had made up to help a friend study the language when Captain Neil and Andrew had come back early from a weekend alone in Columbia.

Nicky had even assured him afterwards that the ink was probably non-toxic and given him floss so he could get the flashcard wedged between his molars out.

So….

“Andrew’s mad that Captain Neil skipped breakfast because they’re working to make him eat something for every meal. Captain Neil’s mad because Andrew’s the one that kept him in bed so long that he didn’t have time to make anything.”

Nicky squeals in delight

The second reason, which is just compounded by the first, is the fact that Nicky had promised not to tell another Soul. However Nicky Hemmick, the romantic that he is, believes that he and his Fiancé Erik share one soul since they are soulmates. Therefore Nicky Hemmic had barely even registered FF’s tears of gratitude before he was calling Erik to tell him about FF.

The sheer number of close calls that have happened because Nicky HAS to tell Erik about something Andrew and Neil said to one another or something someone else is saying is the reason FF started getting ulcers.

Watching Nicky talk to Erik about him knowing Russian is like watching a member of the three stooges walk through a construction site blindfolded. FF nearly kills himself stopping Nicky from outing him numerous times and at the end Nicky’s smiling, unscathed and unaware of the sheer number of close calls he had sauntered through.

FF can’t wait to go home and bury his face in his grandma’s lap, stress eat two apple pies, and tell her about how he thinks he might just become an electrician or a plumber or an underwater welder because one of his language professors wants him to come and speak to a lower level class (a gen-ed with over a hundred people in it) about the usefulness of LATIN for all their majors since they can parse the meaning via root word and he had panicked and said ’Sure’.

The thing about being the only person on the team that knows that FF speaks Russian and is riddled with social anxiety is that it’s absolutely hilarious most of the time.

Every once in a while he has to step in to help the guy.

So sometimes he’ll eat flashcards. Sometimes he’ll distract his cousin with a salacious comment so FF can escape a dangerous conversation with his drunk friend. Sometimes he pushes FF to go talk to Abby about his tummy troubles. Sometimes he’ll hand over one of the brown paper bags he keeps in his backpack nowadays so FF can wheeze into it and sometimes he’ll assure his cousin that FF’s passing out after he offered to teach him how to use a knife was probably because of his stomach ulcers not because FF is terrified of Andrew stabbing him.

Nicky is the only member of the Foxes that FF regularly seeks out on his own to hang out with and Nicky just loves how hard Andrew and Neil are trying not to be jealous about it.

“I want to ask Smith if he wants to come spend Thanksgiving Break with us.” Andrew says out of the blue a week before the aforementioned break when it’s just Aaron, Neil, Nicky and himself in Nicky’s dorm room.

Nicky thinks about FF talking about going back to his hometown in Washington State and how he waxed poetic about spending Thanksgiving Break with his Grandma and how he was going to eat his weight in pie and Macaroni and Cheese.

“He’s planning on going and seeing his grandma. He won’t shut up about it.” Nicky says still glad that FF has a family member like his grandma.

Everyone else in the room look at him.

“He won’t shut up about it?” Aaron asks with an eyebrow raised. Aaron likes FF just fine and appreciates how FF has helped Katelyn start to grasp the fundamentals of the German language so quickly so she can understand what’s being said. “So what he said it twice?” He continues.

Nicky remembers FF’s ability for catastrophizing every conversation with the Foxes into one where it comes out that he speaks Russian and Andrew stabs him. As far as the other Foxes are concerned he’s a man of few words.

“He’s been talking about it all month. If I hear about his grandma’s apple pie recipe one more time I might demand he sneak a slice back for me through TSA.” Nicky loves stoking the flames, especially when the fire is harmless. He watches Aaron shrug and the skin around both Neil and Andrew’s mouths tightens. “You can ask him, the worst he can say is No.” Nicky shrugs.

Nicky is there when Andrew does ask him and he can see the prolonged internal scream of terror on the utterly blank face (or maybe he just imagines it.) and in a way Nicky is a little sad when FF shakes his head and says “No, I have plans with my Grandma.” In an utterly blank voice that means he has functionally blue-screened before turning and walking towards the nearest door so he can reboot in solitude.

“The offer stands if you change your mind.” Neil says and Nicky is impressed with the seemingly very casual thumbs up FF gives as he power walks away.

A little less than a week later Nicky finds Andrew next to FF and FF looking down at a cancelled flight notification after coming in from a truly monumental storm.

Andrew offers Thanksgiving in Columbia again.

Nicky tries to stop it from happening he can see that FF is a little lost in his disappointment over not being able to see his grandma and not thinking clearly but before he can snap him out of it.

“Sure.”

SWANFLIGHT

Prerequisite Traits

Appearance: White fur, and large in stature.

Personality and/or Behavior: Graceful, aggressive, and loyal.

Additional Traits

Like their namesake, a cat that qualifies for Swanflight is massive. (Quite literally, although exceptions are sometimes made for Swan- cats with average sizes and large personalities.) With that size comes an aggressive nature, which manifests as either territoriality, suspicion of outsiders, or protectiveness of their kits. These cats are generally regarded as fearless in the face of arguments or combat, and they have a tendency to attack first, ask questions later. It takes considerable effort from their mentors to train this behavior out of them (or at the least, teach them how to rein it in). Cats with this name are usually the first to take the initiative on tasks, like volunteering for patrols. They also have a steadfast, unwavering devotion to their mates. While this isn’t unusual in a society that’s primarily monogamous, Swanflight cats are the most demonstrative of their relationship. A Swan- cat that qualifies for -flight tends to overlap with -claw and -flower. In ThunderClan especially, Swanflight can be interchangeable with -face, since combat prowess and large statures are the ideal beauty standard. Conversely, Swanflight is virtually nonexistent in ShadowClan, since white fur and tallness are rare in this territory. It’s nearly a guarantee that a ShadowClan cat with that name is either an outsider, or of mixed heritage.

MOUSESTEP

Prerequisite Traits

Appearance: Brown fur, and small in stature.

Personality and/or Behavior: Inquisitive, cautious, and easily startled.

Additional Traits

Mousestep cats have a curious nature that’s at odds with their flightiness. It has little to do with cowardice—rather, they possess an innate sense of danger, and excellent self-preservation instincts. Coupled with their above average speed and reflexes, they demonstrate an aptitude for scouting, and will sometimes qualify for -leg or -shade. They’re highly flexible cats, comfortable in a wide range of habitats which they can acclimate to with little hassle. Their dietary choices are often a reflection of their adaptability—they’re not, as a rule, picky eaters, and they have adventurous appetites. Although all of the Clans have a preference for nocturnal activity, a Mousestep cat epitomizes this. Their eyes are somewhat photosensitive, and they’re averse to bright lights. A high-pitched voice can sometimes be enough to override one of the other prerequisite -step traits, due to its heavy association with mice in folklore.

SHEEPSTEP

Prerequisite Traits

Appearance: [1] Pure white fur, [2] pitch-black fur, or [3] patched black-and-white fur.

Personality and/or Behavior: Polite, obedient, and quick to flee.

Additional Traits

Generally speaking, these cats are very in tune with their Clans, and have a great awareness of internal schisms. That perception, however, seldom translates to an ability to soothe them over. Sheepstep cats are actually conflict-avoidant, and their sensitivity to in-group tension makes them nervous. These cats are most at ease in groups that are stable or tightly-knit (like WindClan). They have a strong inclination to follow authority figures, particularly those that are stalwart or charismatic. It’s been said that when a leader is having a hard time choosing a deputy, a Sheepstep cat is consulted for their input, since they can reliably vet candidates. If a situation becomes extremely dangerous, these cats will typically be the first to either flee or call for a retreat. Although it’s not a requirement for this suffix, a Sheepstep cat is likely to have thick or dense fur that can handle being wet. Statistically, RiverClan is the most likely to produce a Sheepstep, for several reasons: of all the Clans, they tend to have the most white in their fur, with white patching being highly prevalent; their proximity to the pasture makes sheep a common sight, and thus a recurring prefix for kittens; and lastly, their waterproof double-coat is extremely similar to a sheep’s wool.

LIGHTNINGFALL

Prerequisite Traits

Appearance: [1] Pure white fur, or [2] yellow fur.

Personality and/or Behavior: Impulsive, intense, and fast.

Additional Traits

It’s a common stereotype that Lightningfall cats are dramatic, although it would be more accurate to say that they stand out in some manner. It’s their sudden tendency to go from unnoticed, to the center of attention, that is their hallmark. Like the abruptness of a lightning strike, which arrives without ceremony, and illuminates everything in its fleeting presence. Their actions are largely unpredictable, save to those who know how to read and recognize them. That being said, they’re not capricious or fickle cats, although to an observer it might seem that way. There’s a recurring misconception that Lightningfall cats qualify for -storm, even though they lack the characteristic turbulence and emotional mood swings. What defines them is their ability to command the undivided attention of a crowd, using a single action or a mere word, without any warning.

MINNOWLEAP

Prerequisite Traits

Appearance: Short and slender, with one of the following pelt colors: [1] light gray tabby, [2] silver tabby, or [3] light brown tabby.

Personality and/or Behavior: Cooperative, sociable, and intuitive.

Additional Traits

Their stature compliments their reflexes and speed (the latter of which is better suited to sprinting or short bursts, rather than endurance running). Much like a Starlingflight cat, a Minnowleap excels in synchronizing their movements with those of the cats around them, making them highly effective at teamwork. They also enjoy being immersed in busy or large crowds, and thrive on the liveliness that they so easily navigate. Minnowleap cats are nearly always part of their Clan’s Gathering party, since their presence helps reduce tension on waking nights. (And because they’re good at picking up on subtle cues, and accurately gauging the other Clans’ overall mood—be it amiable or aggressive.) They tend to have excellent recognition skills—whether olfactory or visual—which makes them useful diplomats and liaisons. (Or spies, once they’ve familiarized themselves with an enemy’s territory, and learn how to get around it undetected.) It’s best not to underestimate these cats, or be fooled by their size.

If Twig evolved would Opal start transforming into a mini charizard? Would they go for their first flight together, Ark ready to catch them?

This really depends on her age! As an infant, Opal sticks to first-stage evolutions exclusively. To her itty bitty baby subconscious, that's the number-one way to get people to ensure she's safe and cared for. You gotta maximize the adorable baby elements and all that good stuff. Add in the fact that most people only evolve for the first time in their mid-teens at the extreme earliest, and she's only going to begin to venture into other evolutionary stages when she's at that age where toddlers want to copy their parents doing household chores— and even then, it'd be more like a slightly reddish charmander than an actual charmeleon sitting on the kitchen floor while smacking a serving spoon against a mixing bowl as Ark and Twig are making dinner.

However, when she's older, despite being more comfortable with taking the appearance of first-stage evolutions and a handful of second-stage evolutions, she would take more of an interest in charizards once Twig evolves again. It'd be a fun bonding thing for them— Opal would understand way more about flying than Twig would by then, and she'd think that it's hilarious that her mom doesn't know the basics of flight and she's able to teach her something for once instead of the other way around! It's super fun for Opal. She loves it, and she's a good teacher.

Smash cut to Twig launching herself backwards into a tree because Opal said the wind was totally perfect to fully open her wings into.

She's a good teacher :)

I'm wondering how you cope with trauma and relationships? When past experience tells you to run from what might be a good thing and your flight/fight response is activated and wants to run or self sabotage. How do you cope? Looking for any advice as I am in this situation

You are asking the hard questions. The answer is that I am just not coping very well with that.

I don't think self-sabotage is a real thing, if I feel uncomfortable around someone, I get away, and that's that. If I don't feel happy and relaxed, there's nothing to be gained there. If someone activates my fight/flight response, I usually just fawn and tell them anything they wanna hear until I can safely leave their presence and then I never talk to them again, for safety.

I don't feel guilty for putting distance between myself and other people, if my instincts tell me I would feel better alone, I go forward alone. It's not like a person needs to be a perfect friend, to always know what to do, to react to everything perfectly. We're all learning and figuring it out. I think it's okay to break things if I continually get upset, if I feel no empathy from them, if I feel exploited, neglected, offended or annoyed, and it's repetition of those feelings, I figure I don't want this and move on.

I don't have a lot of social contact with people as a result of this, and I feel calmer for that. When I do talk to people, it's by my choice, and it's people I know will not upset me or make me feel on edge. It's going to be pleasant conversations, predictable reactions, laughter and fun, and these people will have decent understanding of who I am, and won't make me feel like I'm in danger. There's not a lot of them, but they're all I want in my life. I value stability more than having people in my life who give me a lot of ups and downs, drama, anxiety, or trigger traumatic responses in me (even if they trigger them accidentally, I just decide it's not a good fit and move on).

I don't think we can get far by ignoring our instincts or forcing ourselves to stay around someone just because we feel like we should, or like we owe them. If we start feeling bad and upset, even if they didn't mean to make us feel that way, it's still the reality of the situation. If those people insist it's *our* fault that we're upset and triggered, that means they don't care they're making someone absolutely miserable with their presence, and they demand for those symptoms to be hidden, rather than resolved.

If you had a more of a specific question, you can ask again, this is very broad and general answer, but you were asking it in a very broad and general way! If someone has a better reply or tricks on how to not get triggered by people all the time, please do add it in the comments or replies. I don't wanna deal with triggers at all so I just avoid anyone who triggers anything bad in me.
