I didn’t plan to take eight nine months off from work. Especially not after the amazing fall we had last year. Last night, while planning this year’s autumn road trips, I saw the images of the trips, two with Mark, one with Justin, and a couple solo rounds. We had the pumpkin stand here at the house. I even got to meet @KJP, the king of Autumn, and I finally broke down and bought Hocus Pocus on VHS. Autumn was amazing, exactly what I wanted…I have thousands of photos shot to share this year, but then, right as we were making the switch from Thanksgiving to Christmas the tornado hit and I spent the next eight months just lost in rebuilding and the stress of dealing with the mess at home. Social media and work went to the back burner on a stove that didn’t even have electricity most of those months. The derailment left me bitter, but it in the end allowed me to evolve life here at home, the rebuilding allowed for me to make this place my own. Eight months of therapy, of endless @andersoneast on repeat, and way too many hours cleaning things that should have been thrown away twenty years ago somehow left me renewed and with a fresh focus…so cheers to the Autumn to come, because for me it starts now. Howdy! So, since I’m posting pretty frequently again I figured I should introduce myself since not everyone has followed since like 2013. I’m Ben, I’m the voice behind this account. I’m a farm kid from rural Kentucky that has a love of small towns, road trips, old fashioned ways, makers and mom and pops, and slow authentic living. Some friends and I started @folkmagazine in 2011 as a college project and it’s grown from there. You’ll usually find me in my kitchen or garden down here at the farm… a place that’s been in my family since the 1780s or somewhere on the road adventuring with friends and meeting up with people along the way. We started FOLK to share authentic stories, and I think it’s time we get back to that. I took most of the year off after a tornado hit the farm in December, but lately I’ve had a real itch to be more active here and carry on. Some other random stuff: fav movie: steel magnolias (I’m ouiser) and Elizabethtown (I base my love life after being @kirstendunst’s character, which likely isn’t sound advice). Fav music, folk/Americana, fav singers Anderson East & LeAnn Rimes (I’m a 90s kid, four days older than Taylor Swift). Fav places: West Village, my garden, the Hudson Valley, the PNW, and the Pacific Coast. I’m a better cook than most people you know. I drive a lot. Eudora Welty is my favorite author.
