Reading in French slows me down, which is good, but there's always that veil, the absence in me of the complex vibrations that one's own language sets up. Vibrations of the past in the words and expressions, the echoing field of meaning in which one and one's own language can play. And yet the slowness makes it rich in another way.

It’s not lack of communication that ruins relationships and friendship, it’s the lack of comprehension. You can communicate in the most articulate, coherent and eloquent way to a person, but if they can’t comprehend what you’re telling them due to lack of emotional intelligence, then communication is useless. Might as well be speaking a foreign language. Rumi said, “Listen to silence. It has much to say.” Let them understand your silence.

Learn japanese by watching anime with JPN Subtitles! ( . u . )
Today, out of the blue, I remembered a site I had discovered a couple of years ago - AniMelon!
I had been searching for a place to watch anime with japanese subtitles - for if the subs are English, I rely on them too much. However, animelon is run for people who are trying to learn japanese, thus one can freely set what kind of subtitles they want!
I usually have JPN - fontsize roughly 56, and english, on a fontsize of 38, in a somewhat darker shade. However, one may also enable Romaji, or Hiragana / Katakana as well - there's tons of customization options!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I customized my subs so I can read the eng subs if I need them - but they dont stand out / are a bit harder to read, so my brain won't auto-read them, when I'm looking at the JPN subtitles.
The JPN Subtitles help a lot to fill the gaps if something slips my comprehension - plus, thanks to browser extentions I can simply hover over the JPN Subs & with merely a single click anki will create a new vocab card for me. ( . u . )
I figured this site might be helpful for some, so i wanted to share it! Using netflix is an option as well, but since you need a) a Netflix Subscription and b) a VPN to access Japanese Media I feel its ways less accessible than, well, this free option . u . )

Does anyone else enjoy browsing foreign language books even though you can’t read the titles? 📖

Me taking German all the way up to German V in high school after a lifetime of knowing English as my first language: what the FUCK is a direct object???? What does past participle mean??? You mean to tell me there's a whole new conjugation depending on the TENSE???
My teacher: You know, English has the same stuff-
Me, who never understood it in my elementary & middle school English classes either: WHY DO LANGUAGES HAVE SO MANY RULES????? Who invented this shit????? I quit!
[to all the people who have the patience and effort to learn a new language, you are my heroes bc I'm still lost to this day 😭]

4 tips for your fast adoption of any language
1. Learn whole sentences instead of isolated words
our brain stores only useful things and we communicate in sentences, not in words
2. Learn the sentences by heart
superficial browsing through materials doesn't get people anywhere, it is a waste of time
3. Be active
try to translate the stuff from your real life instead of relying on your textbook all the time
4. Have FUN with the language
there are many fun and engaging resources
for students of Chinese there is an amazing site with countless wordplays
take your learning to the next level for a price of 2 coffees: https://herohero.co/chineseffect

Korean Listening Resource Recommendation!
This guy came up on my instagram and his account is perfect for beginners to early intermediate learners!! He's on youtube too:
He makes short videos talking about different topics, but the goal is to just listen and try to understand without translating. He speaks slowly & clearly, and uses visual aids like props & pictures. The caption gives the vocabulary words so you can make notes or look them up (if you really need to).
Many language learners struggle with listening because they get caught up in trying to translate every word they hear. That is overwhelming, not to mention extremely difficult. Unless you're studying to be a simultaneous interpreter, you don't need to worry about translating while listening. Just listen. Let the meaning wash over you. Repeat the videos a few times if you need to! Focus on the overall topic, then try to pick out some new words. What is he pointing to? What word did he use to describe it? Can you write that word? Can you write the whole sentence? Let your brain get used to understanding Korean in Korean!
