I have been curious to look at a statistical insight into the different Elemental associations people have with the Cardinal Directions. There are 24 different ways that the directions and elements can be grouped together, but tumblr won't allow me to do a poll with 24 options. I could do an individual poll on each element, but I specifically want to look at which pairings of the four elements/directions are the most common, so I'm going to do a Part 1 and a Part 2 for this poll. Together, these will give all the options for how someone might associate the elements and directions together, so if you don't see your particular pairings in this post, then stay tuned for the follow-up poll.

OG ATLA is a diverse show, Netflix ATLA isn't.
In a world where so many people are fixated on skin color and skin tone, it's crazy to me that I haven't seen anyone say anything about this yet. However, I believe most people are thinking it, so I'm going to say it.
ATLA is a show of characters with diverse skin tones. Sokka and Katara are brown-skinned characters.
Whereas, Aang has white skin and Zuko and Azula have very fair almost porcelain like skin. Their skin was supposed to be without blemish, and Zuko even pointed this out in one episode.
When you look at the live-action cast of ATLA, they are all white-washed. They all have very similar skin tones with the exception of Sokka's actor who is very fair-skinned.
Now, I know what you're thinking. OP how could they all be white washed? They are all indigenous or of Asian decent. None of the main characters are white.
Well, you are correct. However, I am going to introduce you to the concept or colorism. It allows for POC characters to still be white washed, under the notion that the European beauty standard is the idea beauty standard. Translation: the lighter (whiter) the skin, the more beautiful the person.
Which is what we see here with the lightning of Sokka and Katara's skin. Now, you might say, that they were appropriately cast as indigenous. Yes, they may have been. However, idenginuous people come in wide range of skin tones. There's light-skin indigenous, brown skin indigenous, dark skin indigenous and everything in between.
Therefore, we cannot pretend that this was the only canonically correct depiction of Sokka and Katara. We certainly cannot pretend that these actors were the best fit for the job, since they both walked their parts and completely missed the motivations and central themes of their characters.
As a kid, I know that it made me as a black woman and a lot of my friends who were brown women (Indian, Asian, North African, and Latino alike) feel seen when they saw Katara. They were able to see themselves in Katara, because Katara looks like them. I felt more seen when I saw Korra, because Korra was darker and starting to approach my skin tone.
That alone should be enough to want to cast the characters correctly. I mean we so often hear people complain about the blackification of once white characters. The most recent example being Halle Balley playing the Little Mermaid. However, it has always been FAR more common, that individuals and roles of color have been played by and adapted by white actors who do not bat an eye.
Yet, that's not enough, because Katara and Sokka's skin tone meant something. It means something and so does Zuko and Azula's skin tones.
For starters, Zuko and Katara have brown skill despite living in a cold climate, in order to protect their skin from the harmful rays or the sun. Wow.... I know shocking right? 😲
Some of you are shaking your head and thinking that doesn't make sense. It's cold in the arctic, why do they need protection from the sun? It's because the sun's rays reflect off of the white snow. Without a sufficient amount of melanin, the sun's rays could burn the skin of the indigenous people who live there. However, with too much melanin, the indigenous people who live there may not absorb enough Vitamin D. Hence, the brown skin.
Secondly (this point is more race-y), Katara and Sokka at this point when the Southen Water Tribe has been demolished by the Fire Nation, are effectively peasants. They are especially peasants when compared to both the Northern Water Tribe and the Fire Nation.
Peasants work outside. Therefore, peasants tend to have darker skin amongst the people in their given region. They have darker skin because they are exposed to the sun more.
Royalty has lighter skin, because they stay inside palaces, they don't do manual labor, and they have servants, so their skin is always protected from the sun. Has anyone ever notice how pale Toph is and the fact that she's the only character in ATLA who has a last name? That's by design people.
The sibling pairing of Sokka and Katara and Zuko and Azula are diametrically opposed in the original show. They are the ultimate dichotomy.
Sokka and Katara:
- wear blue
- are Water Tribe
- are brown skinned
- are peasants
- grew up in tents and igloos
- are kind to each other
Zuko and Azula:
- wear red
- are Fire Nation
- are fair skinned
- are royalty
- grew up in palaces and slept in Alaskan King sized beds
- hate each other.
The sibling pairs are opposed by more than just their nations of origins and the colors of the clothes. They are also opposed by their skin tones in order to reflect their lot in life.
Someone once said that Katara would never marry Zuko because she's too dark. Her skin is not the skin of royalty, and that person was probably right.
However, Sokka and Katara's skin is powerful, because if you read the Kiyoshi novels you'll learn that there's a great lineage in regard to who gets to train the avatar. It's my belief that if Aang met all of his friends before the 100 year war, Azula and Toph would have been the only people deemed worthy to train Aang. The most powerful people in the world are usually associated with the avatar, yet in the OG show, the most disenfranchised people in the world: Sokka and Katara made Aang into a fully realized avatar.

The Evermore Grimoire: The Elements
The Fire Element is represented by the Sun and its light, as well as the stars, deserts, and volcanoes. It’s the element of transformation, and is associated with illumination, health, strength and creativity. It’s always in motion, even when rooted in one spot, Fire is the most active and animated of the Elements. As a contribution to the natural order of the Earth, it keeps forests healthy through cycles of burning and regeneration. However this same power is also dangerous and deadly when unchecked, which is why it commands such respect from those who seek to use it. Fire can be extinguished by any of the other Elements (Earth, Air and Water), but it is also the only one that must have another substance to consume in order to maintain its existence. It is also mesmerising and yet it’s the only element that can’t be touched without harm to the body. While not technically necessary for human survival Fire is certainly integral to a healthy and comfortable existence.

…where shadows dance about stone-washed palates
shooting pearly bullets’ imitated hunger for scars;
an elemental gunslinger and a gossamer princess
brand dusky tales debasing a plethora of stars,
shredding earthly attire
spilled against ballistics chilled pavements
as a vibrant glimmer set not yet to expire,
for in this perspective time bleeds unto a crescent
transformed sacred motion’s
embarked devotion and desire.

Avatar Kyoshi and Avatar Kora. These two will be the tattoos that I’m putting on the back of someone’s calves. The client does have trouble sitting for the tattoo, and that happens in the tattoo world. Sometimes you have to stop the entire tattoo and be like, “maybe we should do this another day.” The body can only take so much punishment. Also that Achilles’ tendon can only take so much punishment, and just look at the bottom of these pieces. Like, ow! I am excited to work on Kora with her duel light source. ❤️

Advice for the signs based on which element dominates your chart 🔥🌍💧💨
i was meditating and recieved great insight into the thought process of some signs through the literal embodiments of their element.
Earth signs: are grounded and practical but they can also easily get stuck literally or mentally in certain thought processes, because just like the earth it takes a lot to get them to actually move or change, like earthquakes or mudslides or even Pangea just over long periods of time, or sometimes it just needs a comet to come in and completely change the way they work or think, they need to remember that they cannot let themselves become stagnant and know that though it takes great effort to change--especially the way they think, they have the hands to mold who they wish to become.
Fire signs: ever changing, growing and always going towards what brings them joy or enlightenment, can feel like they over power a space and are lonely in their growth, but free in their dance to learn the balance between destruction and creation and what it means for them, to keep finding a light or to be their own, they are centered and sure of what they want but their unpredictable way of moving and changing can be jarring to others, while others might fear them because of their self assuredness they need to remember their center of good and come from a place of warmth, you can be your own light, but don't let your self destructiveness take over
Air signs: free flowing, goes where the wind takes them, sometimes not being able to put action into their own lives but other times being lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, but they can get sucked into their own heads lost in thought and unsure of where they're going, Air signs abstract patterns are what keeps them excited but can make them lonely, they need to flow with life while knowing which direction they're going, and to let others into their lives and not let the people they like slip from their grasp from being too carried away with other things, sometimes you need someone to keep you grounded, it's okay to need others
Water signs: can sometimes fall too deep into their emotions, accidently consuming themselves in their own waves or the ripples created by others, can turn themselves into the most fearsome tsunami rather than remembering the calm waters they can have, always absorbing other waters, you need to center your emotions within yourself and remember that you are a creature of growth, ever changing, some days you will feel like a smooth sailing river and other days will feel like thrashing rain, and you need to center yourself and remember that that is okay

I could do a whole essay, probably a whole book, on how the European cultural hegemony eclipsing our own experiences of nature and how much the popular view of nature being essentially European no matter where you're living is at best detaching you from your environment and at worst has caused massive ecological disaster as Europe's descendants try to force a European agriculture and way of life onto ecosystems that were never designed to hold it. But if I might offer just a fraction of that thinking, just a small bit of the inherent conflict in the cultural view of nature overriding actual nature, think of the characterization of Earth in the four elements ensemble: Stable. Passive. Unchanging.
Guys, I live on the Ring of Fire.
Earth is not stable. It is not passive. It will fuck your shit up.

Backgrounds With Class: Izzet Engineer
I'll be honest: Ravnica has always fascinated me. I was a high schooler when the first set came out, and I was immediately consumed creating characters for the setting. Now that we've actually received my long-awaited crossover, I thought it would be nice to write a love letter to the setting in the form of another Backgrounds with Class series. After all: some guilds have natural class choices tied in, from a conceptual standpoint. Boros and Fighter, Izzet and Wizard, Selesnya and Druid. But guilds aren’t class-restricted, and so I wonder what it would look like if you paired every class with every guild background, even the ones that seem at odds, like Izzet and Barbarian, or Gruul and Artificer.  So I thought about it, and this is what I came up with.  Some character concepts for each class, and each Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica background for each class.
Izzet Engineer
The Izzet Engineer Artificer is a study in contradictions.  Temperamentally, he’s the quintessential vedalken- cool, calm, orderly, and precise.  When it comes to the subject of his work, though, he’s exactly the opposite.  His area of expertise is pyrodynamics, and he specializes in demolitions magic.  When asked about the contradiction, he’s as likely to say that destruction should be no less calculated for maximum efficiency than anything else as he is to crack a rare smile and say simply that it needs to be done.
The Izzet Engineer Barbarian was lab security before his accident, mostly internal in case the mephits or weirds break containment somehow.  Turns out that his chemister employer was experimenting with tri-elemental weird fusions, though, and the massive surge of wild magic that resulted contaminated everyone in the lab that didn’t meet an untimely end.  Now the wild magic is in him, too, triggered by the surge of adrenaline brought on by combat.  Accordingly, and in the spirit of testing the results of the accidental experiment, he’s been involved in a lot more field work lately.
The Izzet Engineer Bard is preoccupied with bringing life to the lifeless.  Motion in general has been an interest of his from gobling on the streets to assistant in the lab, and it’s always fascinated him how the world acts around moving things.  Gifted with a keen sense of timing, he claims to be able to keep the rhythm of the universe, and his ability to magically pull that rhythm to reality is his greatest pride and joy.  If you need someone who knows how to get something somewhere sometime, he’s your man.
The Izzet Engineer Cleric has never been a high-concept member of the League, instead focusing on the materials fabrication.  Attached to things they can work with their hands, they’ve made thousands of miles of piping and scaffolding in their career, and have even supplied housing, capacitors, and other more technical equipment for a variety of projects in the League.  Low-key indispensable and firm in their desire to one day be working with guild-trademark alloys like mizzium, their faith draws from the raw confidence that with the proper tools, and the right material, anything is possible.
The Izzet Engineer Druid is an unusual member of the League in that she hates spending time in the lab.  Bound to a fire elemental companion of her own and planning one day to be a one-woman foreman, her real ambition is to serve as one of the guild’s elementarii.  Weirds and their creation have always fascinated her, and her willingness to field-test anything even remotely related to the topic has made her a popular contractor for testing handheld equipment.
The Izzet Engineer Fighter, like his father and older brothers before him, has always been a dab hand with the crossbow.  The family business is support and assistant work for the chemisters of the Izzet League, and he’s always wanted to be a scorchbringer.  The old man says you always need an edge, so to set himself apart, he’s audited engineering courses at the guild workshops and started making new ammunition for his ‘bow- enhancements of energy and matter, making some truly unique shots possible.  His designs have recently caught one of the lesser magisters’ eye, and now he’s on track to become one of the guild’s best combat engineers and troubleshooters.
The Izzet Engineer Monk was caught in an electro-galvanic storm as a youth and hasn’t been the same since.  Infused with raw elemental energy and adopted by the scientists whose work took the lives of his parents, she spent much of her youth brawling and scrapping on the street until she suddenly- explosively- cut loose with a thunderwave.  Her adoptive parents, hearing of the incident, took her into the Laboratory of Storms and Electricity to see if there’s more to the storm’s changes than her perpetually windblown hair and the crackle of ozone that follows her.
The Izzet Engineer Paladin sees herself one day as not just a scorchbringer, not just a security chief on a project, but the champion of the Izzet League.  She’s not much of an inventor herself, but there’s always room for a strong back and a will to fight in the League, clearing abandoned structures for refurbishment and engaging in one of modern Ravnica’s countless small-scale military action.  The day is coming, she can see, that she sprints into battle bearing the latest and greatest of her League’s tech.
The Izzet Engineer Ranger joined the Izzet combine under unusual circumstances.  A kraul and formerly a farmer in the Undercity, she used to deal with all kinds of run-off from the Izzet laboratories above contaminating her food until one day a weird washed down the pipes.  After putting it down, she went to the laboratory to demand they reroute their sewage, and left hired as the official run-off and chemical waste technician under the League's employment, as well as underground security.  Now, she handles the access tunnels and piping for a network of laboratories, growing increasingly interested in wielding a scorchbringer.
The Izzet Engineer Rogue has a dirty job, for the Izzet League.  Officially on the payment records as an outside consultant, she is one of the League’s idea thieves.  When guildless engineers hit on something the League can use but refuse to sell, she seeks them out and makes sure their designs and experimental materials fall into the hands of someone who can use them.  She doesn’t mind the work; the challenge is nice, and although she has enough technical know-how to make modest progress herself, she is much more comfortable cracking locks and dodging security.
The Izzet Engineer Sorcerer is a natural talent at storm summoning, but when a stray bolt fried their clan’s shaman, they fled the Gruul to take up with the other guild that likes lightning.  Among the Izzet, their talent is looked down upon for the more primitive flavor they bring with it, but none can argue with the results.  As-is, they ended up doing the scut work of keeping maintenance tunnels clean and smoothly running, a dull job with a lot of hands-on ground-level know-how involved.
The Izzet Engineer Warlock has had an unorthodox apprenticeship.  Instead of working with and learning from a chemister or blastseeker, she made a deal when she joined the guild to work under a water djinn.  He gave her a disused segment of water-cooling piping, part-time work at two labs, and a promise of an arcane engineer’s manual in the future.  She’s making the best of it so far, helping with her colleagues’ experiments where she can and faking her way through the rest.
The Izzet Engineer Wizard is, predictably, fascinated by conjuration magic.  Themself a weird brought to life by a magister’s experimental elemental summoning, gifted with an unusual spark of intelligence for elemental plasm, it is small wonder their talents tend toward the calling of things- and, eventually, beings.  Crackling with life and lightning, limber as a stream of molten mizzium, they’re as mercurial in interest and focus as any magister of their guild, a role they hope one day to fulfull.

The Evermore Grimoire: The Elements
The Water Element is represented by lakes, streams, rivers, oceans, and rain, and is beneficial in its cleansing, purifying, healing and nourishing qualities. It can exist as a solid form of ice, or as a gas in tiny particles in the air and can take the form of puddles after rain, only to disappear again in the sunshine. Water is often thought of as the most essential of the Elements for sustaining life. Humans, of course, cannot live without it, and the same is true of animals and plant life. Yet it can also be a threat to life when it manifests as stormy seas, riptides, and even severe rainstorms. Water is more powerful when interacting with the other elements, as it can extinguish Fire, flood the Earth, and combine with Air to corrode and dissolve metals. Generally speaking, however, it is one of the more soothing elements. Associated with the Moon, psychic abilities, dreams, and the realm of emotions, Water is a shape-shifter, moving easily throughout the world by following the path of least resistance.
