Spell Ingredient - 'Love Twists'
So today I wanted to share a spell ingredient that I've been using as an alternative to taglocks like hair, nails, etc. when casting a spell towards a specific person. I've had pretty good personal success from this, and they're pretty simple to make.
I also wanted to share because this is one of the first personalised spell ingredients I've ever created, I think part of the success I've had with using them comes from their personal relationship to my beliefs and superstitions.
Where do 'Love Twists' come from?
When I was around six years old, I learned a superstition on the school playground - if you take an apple, and twist the stem whilst reciting the alphabet, the stem will break off on the letter of the first name of your soulmate. It was a simple game that we'd play every few weeks, and this little superstition has followed me throughout my life, and I continued to do this for every apple as a little bit of harmless fun.
Shortly after I started my path, I began to save the stems that broke off on the initial of my SO's name. When he was having issues with job applications, I made a prosperity spell jar and added a love twist as a kind of taglock, and the spell ended up being very effective.
Now, I collect the initials for several people - my parents, my close friends, my brother - and I keep them in case they need a little magical helping hand in the future.
'Love Twists' and Correspondences
I feel that what makes this kind of unconventional taglock unique is that it doesn't carry a neutral energy: because of the unconscious association with love from the original superstition, I think it promotes a positive effect within the spell. It's not only a connection to that person, but a representation of the care you feel for that person, which is informing the spell you cast.
However, I want to note that I wouldn't recommend using a love twist in a love spell. I personally don't really touch love spells because of the long and storied ethical concerns many have, but I think they would be ineffective.
In my practice I've found they work best in directing magic to another person, and not necessarily in turning magic upon yourself. I did two spells a few months apart in an attempt to improve the relationship between myself and a family member, both with a love twist as a taglock, and the spell that had a more profound effect was the one that also included some of my hair.
Because of this, I think there could be a strong directional aspect to using love twists as a taglock, and I've found they work best in directing magic towards someone - I use them to help solve problems in my friends' and family's lives.
*
I hope you guys found this interesting, and I would love to hear if anyone tries using a love twist in their practice. I'm currently trying to really hone my craft in my practice and figure out where I want to take my path, and I really want to engage with the witchblr community instead of just lurking so I'm going to try and be more active.

I've been having a lot of thoughts about magic in Dragon Age:
So mages in Dragon Age seem to have spell books right? Merrill mentions that Anders has a grimoire, Flemeth has one, the mage enemies in Inquisition have them, etc. So it stands to assume that most mages have them (maybe not lifelong apostates like the Hawkes but circle mages for sure, right?)
I think these spell books are a compendium of instructions for many spells that mages CAN learn and cast, not just the ones they already know how to cast.
Like in world leveling up would just equate a mage getting time to memorize new spells so that they could cast them without needing to look at the book (aka the instructions).
I think mages can cast most spells if they have their spell book with the instructions for the casting of the spell available. Obviously some people are going to struggle with certain schools of magic even if they have instructions for it (my warden is hopeless at casting entropy spells).
And then they have a core set of spells that they know well enough that they can cast quickly and easily in things like combat or emergencies (aka the spells on they have on their hot bar from leveling up).
So mage spell books are basically their vast collection of notes from years of apprenticeship and further study as an enchanter (for circle mages) or notes on spell casting that they've figured out themselves or learned from others (for apostates and such).
I also like to imagine that spells aren't as rigid as they are in, say, d&d. Mages can essentially twist reality to their will, which I feel lends a lot of mutability to the magic use. So while there is a template for certain spells in books, everyone is going to cast the spell a little different and each casting will probably be different based on what the mage wants the spell to do.
Like how DA2's cone of cold is a wide swath of ice spikes to impale enemies vs DAO's cone of cold being a concentrated and controlled blast that freezes enemies solid. I think mages can do both of these and more depending on what they want the spell to do/ what they need it for in the moment.
So compared to d&d where a spell like fireball is always going to have a 150 ft range, 20ft radius, do 8d6 damage etc. things are a lot looser. Mages draw on the mutability of the fade and bring it into the real world to cast spells, so it makes sense that spells are inherently mutable.
So the best mages are more like sculptors rather than rules lawyers :3

I'm trying to do my own rewrite that doesn't veer too far from canon, and I'm really struggling with how to handle Tigerstar and Sasha. I think Hawk and Moth being half kittypet contributes to their characters in fun ways, and I can see how Tigerstar would want new heirs after being banished from ThunderClan. But idk why xenophobic Tiger would consort with a kittypet, especially someone he'd see as soft like Sasha, when he could've picked a Shadow or RiverClan cat instead? Any thoughts?
You may find my Political Union Concept very helpful for your Sasha dynamic, but I actually get this particular sentiment a lot. People who come to me feeling like they have to work out a problem, "Why does this xenophobic person consort with this member of an outsider group?"
And I don't understand the confusion. Bigotry isn't a principle. Bigoted people don't avoid talking to minorities like a vegan avoids bacon, like it's a meaningful, noble choice. Xenophobes think minorities are inferior and subhuman and that looks like a lot of different things.
(CW: Talking candidly about bigotry, racism, xenophobia, and violence against minority groups. This includes several real-world examples. I also speak about an abusive relationship in a way that could be triggering.)
Bigots interact abusively with the people they're prejudiced against, which CAN look like the "classic" frothing nazi hurling slurs, segregation, and denial of service, yes, but there's a lot of different ways to be abusive.
It can be Exploitative. It can be labor exploitation, it can be human trafficking. It's very easy to justify doing inhuman acts to someone you don't see as human, and worse... when society agrees and is equally bigoted? It becomes very easy to isolate a member of a minority group to groom them for this exploitation, and not face justice for your misdeeds.
There's a massive power imbalance between a person like Tigerstar, a political figurehead, and Sasha, a member of a minority group unprotected by the society's laws. The potential for abuse, isolation, exploitation... it's unfathomable. Sasha is in a deeply dangerous situation; Tigerstar knows that. That's probably what he wants.
Personhood is a privilege her abuser can revoke. I can't capture how terrifying this situation would be realistically.
I often get the original sentiment in the form of, "Why did Tigerstar work with Scourge when he's a xenophobe? He wouldn't want his help!" and... I think this sort of question that should prompt its speaker to do some more personal education on social justice issues. Racists, colonists, xenophobes, and chauvinists are constantly doing this.
Why do xenophobes eat fruit knowing a migrant probably picked it? Because they don't care. Why do sexists hire women? Because they want the labor. Why does Sammy Racism buy product from Company X when he SEES it is owned by a minority? That's the cheapest company.
Why did Tigerstar work with BloodClan? Because they would give him the forest. He probably didn't even plan on giving them what he bargained for.
The minute that Scourge defied him, and said, "I need to rethink these terms in light of new information," Tigerstar flipped the fuck out and tried to kill him for disobedience. He never respected his personhood, or Firestar's, or Sasha's. Ever. That doesn't mean he was physically incapable of interacting with them without slurs bubbling out of him like he was possessed by the ghost of a racism-themed pokemon.
I know it can be easy to imagine bigots being like this chucklefuck who won't climb rainbow stairs, because they are VERY funny and laughing at them is EXTREMELY satisfying, but most bigots will just Take The Rainbow Stairs.
So ASK yourself, instead, what the xenophobic character actually wants. What they can get from this relationship. Sometimes they do want to eradicate the minority group. Sometimes they want power first and will use the group they're bigoted against to get it. Sometimes they want labor. Sometimes they want bodies. Sometimes they want goods. Sometimes the see those last two as the same thing.
Clear your mind of this idea that prejudice itself is rational, logical, or even that bigots have consistent beliefs. Prejudice is a bias, a slimy bucket of contradictory ideas that slide against each other like worms. Bigots and minorities aren't pop rocks and coke, chemically incapable of being in a space without exploding. Minorities live in bigoted societies next to people who hate them their whole lives, it's not so simple as "Xenophobic character = Says no to disliked group."

Control and the Universal Neutral - Or, How I Make Good Shit Happen
So i’ve mentioned before that I’m really trying to re-examine my practice and build up my beliefs through my own experience, after previously falling into the classic beginner witch pinterest infographic hole.
Because of this, I’ve really tried to delve down to the basics of what I subconsciously believe about the universe and the world around me, and how I interact with it. Which has led me to examining what I call ‘The Universal Neutral’.
What is the ‘Universal Neutral’?
The ‘Universal Neutral’ is the basic balance of the universe, in your mundane life. Bad things happen, good things happen, and these things usually aren’t malicious, but down to luck. Now this isn’t to say that everything that happens is ‘just the universe’ - individual decisions do obviously have an effect on the world we live in, so systemic issues and people generally being shitty aren’t a part of the universal neutral. Rather, the random good or bad things that happen during your day are your specific Universal Neutral.
To give an example, there is someone that I really don’t like in my university, but my Universal Neutral means I very rarely see them around, which is a good thing. A bad thing in my Universal Neutral is that my supermarket clubcard app keeps crashing when I pay for groceries, and so I end up having to pay full price a lot of the time.
Now that I’ve spent time paying attention to patterns in my life and figuring out which good and bad luck components make up my Universal Neutral, I can now manipulate these factors with magic!
I have a rolling protection spell which I use to keep myself away from that person I dislike, using my good luck to my advantage by strengthening it by magic. With my clubcard app, (beyond all the techy stuff i’ve done to try and get the bloody app to work) i have a little good luck charm attached to my phone to offset some of the bad luck.
It might be stating the obvious, but I’ve found it much easier to promote the good luck in my life than try and change the bad luck, probably because in the former I’m following the path of least resistance. However, with bad luck, I’ve been trying to just offset the bad luck, instead of change it entirely. I’ve done this for quite a few different things that just gently improve my day to day life - finding more cute things at the thrift store, improving my chance of finding discounts, more fortuitous meetings with friends in town, an easier time finding articles for my uni essays, and it’s just overall improved my quality of life.
I’ve also found that paying more attention to the patterns in my life, and picking out the good things along with the bad, has really improved my mood and made me a lot more grateful for some of the simpler things in life. As well as this, having more control through magic has made me more confident, and manipulating the universal neutral has been good magical practice in creating small but powerful spells, and watching their effects play out in real time has been very rewarding.
The concept of a Universal Neutral, from a more spiritual perspective, is something I have found very comforting. I’ve seen a lot in spiritual and witchcraft spaces talk of ‘lucky girl syndrome’ and ‘high/low vibrations’ which I find kind of predatory, and I think instead having this idea of a personal Universal Neutral, where day to day luck is balanced with some good and some bad (and an understanding that this doesn’t extend to the actions of other parties against you) a lot more fair, comforting, and (in my opinion) realistic.
I hope this little personal analysis is somewhat interesting to you guys, I would love to hear what you think!!

Less Gone Than You Think
Cerberus carefully sniffed the lifted area, heads baring their teeth as they growled at the stone. Master sighed behind them, their left head looked back. He was pinching the bridge of his nose, Master was mad again. “Do not break anything.” he told Cerberus, whose middle head also looked back at him and both whined, one of their heads still keeping its eyes on the stone and weird thing there. Did master not see it? why- “Am. I. Clear?” Cerbus last head turned to him at the wings and horns and power Master showed them, and they turned to face Master, backing up and whining. He was just trying to show Master something was there! With a sigh, Master turned and walked out of where he told them to stay. Cerberus tried to run and stop him, but Master told them to stay and they couldn’t leave without Master. Cerberus whined, upset that Master hated them.
‘Come now, little one.’ Cerberus turned his heads to look behind him, at what his Master was ignoring, to the woman sitting in the hands of the statue. She jumped down, and he scrambled back, whining for his master to come help. She knelt and held her hand out to him, smiling. He got curious and carefully crept closer, all three heads sniffing the hand offered only to sneeze at the weird smell. She laughed and her hand pet his middle head as he pawed his nose, trying to get it out. The touch made him growl, and she stopped, but then she started petting him again and it felt good. They crept closer and her other hand also pet his left head, his right one continued to try and sniffle her, but she had a smell that he could barely smell. It was weird.
‘It’s alright little one, he’s not angry at you. He’s sad.’ yes! yes, Master smells sad a lot, but he’s always angry too! Cerberus’s tail wags. The Lady laughs and her hand moves to pet his right head. ‘Lucifer won’t be angry forever sweet thing, it’s ok. He’s not mad at you at all, so give him some time.’ Cerberus whines. Master is scary and mean to him! ‘Its hard to believe, but he’s so very nice little one, he just needs time. He’s sad and scared, he’s not ready to open his heart to someone new just yet.’ Cerberus is confused, Master is sad, but he’s scared? Master is strong, why would he be scared? ‘You’re confused by what I mean?’ she asks, and they woof softly at her. She smiles and pets all of them again. ‘Come here, sweet little one, I’ll tell you about Luci’. Cerberus follows her and when she sits at the bottom of the big statue they curl up next to her legs with their heads on them. She pets him and they listen to her tell them about Master. They’re tired and want to hear more, but she’d nice and the pets feel good, Cerberus falls asleep hearing about Master and his brothers and sister. he wonders where Master’s sister is, he doesn’t smell a girl in the House above this place.
-
Lucifer is surprised, when he returns to the Underground Tomb, to find Cerberus asleep, curled around the base of the statue next to Lilith’s empty tomb. Despite all he’s feeling, so many conflicting and negative emotions, he finds himself smiling a bit and kneeling to pet the heads of the dog that rolls into his touch in its sleep. “I don’t mean to be cruel to you, I am sorry.” he whispers to the dog, leaving the large bowl of food nearby for when he wakes before turning to make his exit. He doesn’t see the soul behind him, smiling gently, his dogs’ heads on her lap.
‘He knows, Big Brother.’ she says after him, the demon unable to hear her words. ‘You’ve sacrificed so much for me and my happiness, thank you. Thank you so much Big Brother.’ She whispers to her brothers’ back, her non-physical form not allowing her to shed tears, but for a split second, Lucifer pauses, feeling that there was someone behind him, but it was impossible for anyone to be in there with him. ‘I hope you will find happiness again someday as well, not just you but all of you. I love you too, Luci.’
