Stop Personifying Game Studios
Stop Personifying Game Studios - This morning I talk about the problem where gamers keep treating studios as though they were the equivalent of their favorite authors.
This morning’s blog post is admittedly going to be a bit of a wild ride. It is a topic that I have been kicking around in my skull for a few weeks now. I hope to do it even half the justice it deserves. Lately, I have been on this binge of consuming the Old Man’s War series by John Scalzi. I’ve been listening to these in Audiobook form while playing Path of Exile, and I love this so much. While I…

Wow~ There is a lot of FE hate on Nintendo of America's latest Tweet about 3 Hopes O~O;
I had heard that the Nintendo community was getting really angry at FE3H, Fire Emblem in general, and Xenoblade, for getting new games and a dedicated Nintendo Direct this morning. But wow... I don't get it. Can't people just ignore the game announcements they're not interested in? It's not like the ability of hosting these games on the Switch, is going to take away the chances for other games to get onto the platform. Multiple 3rd party developers can work on games for the same platform, at the same time. Is this why someone posted a reminder that all these different games are developed by 3rd party developers, and not all being created by Nintendo? Nintendo isn't the single entity whose development resources are being taken up by Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, and whatever other games people were hoping for. The most "dividing of a singular limited resource" going on, is the exact time taken to promote one game, over another. But even if Nintendo promoting one game at one specific time does take that exact time and place away from marketing another hypothetical game, it still doesn't take away Nintendo's ability to talk about both. They have Directs about multiple games all the time. They have multiple Directs centering on one game at a time. I can't believe there are this many people treating Nintendo as a "zero sum game", where if one game gets made, then another one isn't. Ridiculous.
The Tweet with horrible comments (but also some FE-supportive comments):
The posts countering the toxicity:

Looking at just the banner images, which game is marketed to which demographic? Together it becomes more obvious, apart you'd probably have no idea.
Note I'm not saying these games are only for specific people, I'm pointing out that marketing itself has decided who the demographic is that makes the studios money. Can you spot the correct one?
I'll wait for GamerGate2 to start lol

Larian Studios in 2029: As always we continue to improve the romance experience in Baldur’s Gate 3! See below for some of the changes coming with Patch #43:
— You now have the ability to argue about your tax returns with your spouse
— Fixed an issue where the game would freeze while you & your partner were shopping at the IKEA in Baldur’s Gate
— If you opted to have children, you must now pass a DC 30 check in order to have the energy to stay awake past 9:45 pm
— If partnered with Gale and living in Waterdeep, you can now discuss whose family you will be spending next Waukeentide with (*note, not an option with a Dark Urge character)

Me: "hey game developers, especially AAA ones, are getting laid off en-mass and it's awful for our industry"
Gamer: "well I only play INDIE games and the problem with AAA games is they are creatively bankrupt"
Me, slamming my fists on the table like a baby: "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THIS IS ABOUT A BUSINESS PROBLEM PERPETUATED BY CAPITALISM NOT A STATEMENT ON CREATIVE DECISION MAKING"

It will forever make me sad that most if not all game studios outsource their accounting.
Like, I get it, I'm not saying they shouldn't because someone somewhere found it's better to hire a firm for that, but damn it sucks that I'll likely never get to join on to a studio because I can do accounting. I'm not a CPA so I can't (and honestly wouldn't want to) join an accounting firm. I work for the accounting department in a real estate management company.
I can't code, I can't design, I CERTAINLY can't do PR/HR/Anything in the field, and I don't have the focus for QA. But damn it I can balance books, keep financials looking (legitimacy not the weird "fudging" (read- Fraud)) great, and let the team focus on the important front end stuff while I work on the back end stuff.
This isn't a critique against game industry, or against studios. I'm in a different industry, and I love what it, but sometimes I look at smaller game companies and thing "man, I'd love to say I helped make that a reality"
