"Those are mostly capos," Travis keeps his voice low as he points to the table nearby, keeping the glass in hand to hide his gesture, "I think…" he cranes around, "I might be the only soldier here…"

"Really?" You raise your brows but quickly resume your neutral preen.

You're intimidated as it is. You don't know much about Travis' business, and this is your first time seeing it from the inside. However, it doesn't seem to be anything more than an overly fancy dinner party.

"Oh, and that's Loki," he darts his eyes sharply to a slender man strutting at the other end of the room. He has a short liquor glass in hand and stops to lean on close to a blond man along the head table, "the boss's brother. The one he's chatting up right now." Travis leans in, "Thor…" he explains, "hon," he puts his hand on yours, "try not to stare. Lot of guys in here don't appreciate it."

"Sorry, I…" your eyes catch the pair of blue irises at the near table. The ones set into the chiseled face of that man proclaimed boss, Thor. Your lips part in surprise before you quickly avert your gaze. "I'm just nervous."

"Yeah, uh, well, try not to look like it," he reproaches. "Maybe…maybe I shoulda come alone."

You try not to frown. He does that. When you go out to dinner, if you don't keep a smile pasted on, suddenly the night is spoiled. Or even at home when you're having a quiet night in, you can ruin the night with one wrong word.

"I'll keep my eyes to myself," you promise, "okay?"

"Right," he nods past you and greets another man as he passes by. "Make sure you do. And if someone says hi, don't be so shy. I don't need you getting on the wrong side of these guys." He grabs his glass and takes a gulp, "this could be my in."

"Got it," you pinch the stem of your champagne flute and draw it closer but don't drink. Better not, sobriety will keep you out of trouble.

Travis ends up at another table, enthralled in conversation with a pair of greasy haired gangsters in patterned velvet jackets. You stare at the table, trying not to attract any unwanted attention. Dinner is over and dessert has mostly gone untouched. You're just waiting for the end.

Thinking of the drive back, you should try to hit the bathroom before that. You peek around cautiously and stand, hugging your clutch to your side as you carefully sidle out from between the table and chair. You keep your head down and make your way to the wall, following it to the short hallway that leads to a set of restrooms.

Inside, you take your time, relieved at the moment of privacy. As you wash your hands, you watch your reflection. You look tired even through your makeup.

You grab your purse and go back out. You hold back a yawn as you get to the end of the hallway and you stop to search the room, making sure Travis is where you left him. You take a step, nearly tripping as a deep voice rumbles from closeby.

You think of ignoring it, assuming they're speaking to someone else, but then you remember what Travis said. You turn and look around.

The blond man, the one with the burly shoulders that threaten the seams of his tailored jacket, grins at you. His fingers are woven together and his elbows rest on the table. He winks at you as you peer around in confusion, expecting someone else to be closeby. It's only you.

"You," he separates his hand and points in your direction, "I do not know you."

You open and close your mouth. You step closer as you swallow and find a smile through your nerves. You grip your purse tight and pronounce your name.

"I'm with Travis. Er, Mallory. My boyfriend. Uh, sir."

His eyes twinkle with amusement, "Thor," he introduces, "sir? Please, none of that is needed. Not for a pretty woman like you."

"S-thank you, Th-Thor," you sound utterly stupid as you try to keep your calm. If Travis saw you talking to this man, you know it would be bad. He wouldn't want you messing up his prospects.

"Sit," his invitation is more a demand.

You can't refuse. What little you know of this business suggests he is even more dangerous than Travis. You go around the table as Thor stands and pulls out the empty chair next to him. You sit and make yourself breathe.

"Boyfriend?" He resumes his seat, angling to face you, "not husband?"

"Not yet," you say.

"And why would he wait?" He wonders as you wilt against his handsome gaze.

"I'm sure he'll propose soon," you shrug, "dinner was great."

"Ah, it was delicious," he sits back, "though my company was not so pleasing." He bends his arm against the table, "not like you."

"I… thank you. That's very, uh, flattering."

"It's the truth. I'm afraid I was probably poor company myself. Being as distracted as I was," his eyes cling to you, "wondering who this beautiful stranger is."

You look away. He's charming, if not a touch cheesy. You don't know how to handle it.

"There you are," Travis saves you from your conundrum. "I was just thinking we should–" he stops and clears his throat, "sir," he stands at the end of the table, "hi, er, I didn't see you there," it's obvious his surprise is fake, "Travis Mallory, I work with Haakonson."

"Ah, yes, he is a reliable capo," Thor shifts and puts his hand on the back of your chair, "I was only just having a discussion with your… girlfriend."

"Oh? That's…great," Travis is less than convincing.

"Yes, I was just agreeing with her that it's really too bad you haven't proposed," Thor asserts and your eyes widen. "A girl like her should have a ring on her finger."

"Yea, sir, I agree, I, um, I was… trying to surprise her–"

"Ah, so you have a ring? Diamond? I think a teardrop becomes this one but she might do well with a princess cut," Thor proclaims as he takes your hand, drawing a wince from you. "She should be adorned in gold and gems."

"Sir, I know, I've been working on it–"

"Ah, ah," Thor keeps his hand on yours, "I don't like excuses. And she shouldn't settle for them."

Thor raises your hand and kisses your knuckles. You can only let him. Your scalp spatters with heat as you nearly combust between the two men.

"She deserves a throne… look at her, a queen."

"Sir, thank you. She is. I take care of her–"

"Do you?" Thor accuses, "how do you take care of her?"

You don't dare tug your hand away despite the urge to do just that. You sit frozen as his hand crushes yours. You slowly turn your head to glance at Travis, his cheek twitching in agitation.

"I…" he swallows and tries to wet his dry mouth. He can't yell this man into submission and he knows it.

"Let me give her the throne she deserves," Thor snickers and leans over. His nose tickles your ear and he lowers his voice to a whisper, "come, kitten, sit in my lap."

He sits back and you gape at him, shocked by his suggestion. No, it's an order. You blink and look at Travis again. Thor hits the table with his large hand, the plates and cutlery clattering.

"You don't need his permission," he pulls on your arm, "you need only my word."

"S-sorry," you slide forward in the seat and stand stiffly.

Thor releases your hand and shoves his chair back, running his large hands over his thighs. You step in front of him and he frames your hips, pulling you down before you can think to refuse. You fall into his lap, bracing his forearm to keep your balance.

"Now that is where a woman like her belongs," Thor leans into you and rests his chin on your shoulder, "with a king, not a peasant."

You look at Travis, horror pumping in your veins, a fear reflected in his drawn face. Thor brushes a hand up your stomach and turns his head to nuzzle your neck. The tickle of his beard makes you moan.

Thor lifts his head at last, his arm hooked around you as he clings to your tightly, "what a wonderful gift you brought me, soldier."

Travis does not move. He just stares, blinking as his fingers twiddle at his side. Your lip trembles. What do you do?

"You are dismissed," Thor enunciates harshly.

Travis bites down, jaw clenching tightly, and he murmurs, "yes, boss."

His sole scuffs as he drags his foot back. You watch him in disbelief. He's just leaving you there.

"You see, kitten," Thor reaches to pet your head, "he is not good enough for you. You deserve more than a coward."

Starburst by dracoangelic and GingerD - Stardew Valley, Shane/Farmer - Literally the best fanfic I've ever read!!! The author's OC is one of the main characters and is so well done! The world is expanded in the best way. The ending is perfect. I can't say enough!!!

Dresden by hedera_helix - attack on Titan, Eruri - Historical/WW2 AU - The 2nd best fanfic I've ever read and the best historical au. The setting fits so well with the characters. The grief of the war and of being queer during that time period. There's so much here

Victor Effing Nikiforov by shysweetthing - Yuri on Ice, Victuuri - My favorite YOI fic and the best oneshot! It's cute, funny and has a great plot twist!! Love

This is Not a Courtship by midnightsnapdragon - MDZS, Xicheng, unfinished - WOW this is a recent fic but there's so much sexual/emotional tension that builds up so gradually and is SO well done

Beneath Your Bones by cloudsmachinations - Thor Series, Thorki - I'm surprised it's taken a thorki fic this long to show up on my list but like I said many tough decisions were made. This fic is SO GOOD. I won't call it a soulmate au, because it's not, it's a host? au I guess but so well done. LOVE and my favorite thorki fic

Beside the Dancing Sea by lily_winterwood - Yuri on Ice, Victuuri, selkie au - wow my favorite mermaid/selkie fic of all time and a yoi classic, unfortunately it seems it got deleted from ao3 and is in the process of being uploaded again

On My Love by RikoJasmine - Yuri on Ice, Victuuri, unfinished - there's not many unfinished fics that made the list but - this one deserves to be here. A "back in time" AU that's famous in the YOI fandom. It's SO SWEET and definitely worth the read.

Unwritten by kaizuka - Yuri on Ice, Victuuri, Soulmate AU - my favorite soulmate AU of all time and a YOI classic. I'm pretty sure it was the first yoi fic I ever read. It's so good, sweet and fits perfectly with the series

Stormbreaker by ladylapislazuli - Thor Series, Thorki, unfinished - another "back in time" AU, Wow where do I begin, this fic is so well written and famous in the thorki fandom, the last and most recent chapter is my favorite, it hits so many emotions, shows so much character growth, Thor faces a lot of feelings about his family, unfinished but the feelings it expresses are worth the read

Until My Feet Bleed and My Heart Aches by Reiya - Yuri on Ice, Victuuri, Enemies to Lovers AU - I think this is the single most well known yoi fic and for good reason, a slow burn enemies to lovers Victuuri AU, it's just so good

Not in Peace and Not in War by justrae2010 - Yuri on Ice, Victuuri, Historical/War AU - my 2nd favorite historical AU ever. The first chapter was originally written as a stand alone for a big bang and the writing in that alone is amazing!!

Animals by stereobone - Attack on Titan, Eruri, Prison AU - my favorite prison AU of all time, it fits so well with eruri and the burn is slow

The act of just being here by Euphorion - SVSSS, Bingqiu - a post canon fic, WOW I LOVE this fic, Shen Yuan having more character growth and letting himself love more, it's perfect, the writing is amazing!

What Gangsters Do by tristinai - Detroit Become Human, Reed900, gangster AU - this is a oneshot that's part of a larger series, however this particular fic is SO WELL Done, Nines goes from hating Gavin to loving him within a few paragraphs and just wow, that's writing goals right there

Just in it for the game by grim_lupine - Thor Series, Thorki, fake relationship AU - I LOVE this fic, it's hilarious, a post Ragnarok fic that's funny and sweet

A Matter of Cats by cato_universe - Detroit Become Human, Reed900 - this is a Nines centric fic and I LOVE it, such a comfort read, libraries, cats, and love

Inching closer to the modern-day side of my Marvel fanfic's plot

So being a person who wears glasses all the time and has to deal with regular people's often-weird ideas about "not being able to see well," I've got three low-vision/glasses-wearing characters in my Marvel fanfic "The Lightning-Axe," and their powers will never really compensate for their physical eyesight.

Ulupong: Has glasses. A pagan Filipino merfolk prince who also shapeshifts into a cobra (hence his very appropriate name). Besides being a merman who can live and breathe underwater, his only INDIVIDUAL powers are "shapeshifting into a spitting cobra, with the subsequent abilities of 'being the second-most notorious snake in the Philippines'" and "being immune to a LOT of, if not all, poisons." Tends to be a melee fighter because THE BRO CANNOT SEE PAST TEN FEET, do you expect him to be an archer??? It also seems that cobras don't have heat/infrared vision, so this worked out especially great for me!

Sootz': Normal Mayan guy, was born premature and now needs glasses. His powers are "being nice to bats and trying to remove the stigma around them," which helps a LOT in the Otherworld when they end up fighting the Filipino sun-spirit called Araw and Camazotz the bat-god has to end the daytime so their ship can get the fuck away from him.

Araw: The one-eyed primordial Sun of the Tagalogs, implied to be a God-Tier mutant like Kukulkan / Namor. He has fuck-all to do with the Filipino flag as a colonial invention, and he would burn it to ash if he saw one. He lost one eye in a duel with Bathala, and in the story, ancient Tagalogs used to view the mortal world's sun as his other eye and he can't go back to the mortal world proper, or else he'll return to full strength and burn the world just by existing. His powers: Turning into a giant flaming eagle, being immune to most cold temperatures, being immune to most hot temperatures, healing most burn-wounds (but only those caused by FIRE, so ice burns and magical "burns" like the Infinity Gauntlet are out of his jurisdiction) metaphorically "seeing" the multiverse and knowing how a lot of things turned or will-turn out, and not giving a fuck what anyone says about him.

WHO can beat the Tagalog Sun, though? Usually proper deities and very powerful superheroes. The key thing is that he loses his fire-powers at night, so then he "just" becomes a hot immortal Pinoy seer. If you want to beat Araw with water, you need to basically flood the place, or trap him underwater at sunset with some gangster-style cement shoes. (Obviously, he won't drown--but it's gonna take him the night to regain his fire-powers, and by then you've had at least several hours to Run The Fuck Away From Him! He'll still have to LOOK FOR YOU!)

Once the group manages to beat him and he feels extreme remorse over attempting to kidnap Ulupong's girlfriend Lawin and trying to burn off Ulupong's leg, they find out the Sun is a very good ally and he happens to have a history with the Norse gods (in that he got banned from Asgard when Loki and Thor were about three years old).

Unfortunately I made a stupid decision by deciding to worldbuild Talokan's origins, so I've still got about five hundred years of colonization to slog through before we actually MEET these guys!

marvel AU concept where the Avengers are not a set group in a traditional sense; there's no specific team line up and they don't have a particular headquarters, but they follow the logic of Marvel Ultimate Alliance's team compositions in that LITERALLY any superhero who has agreed to join the alliance (and a few villains, and some outlying cases) are considered part of the team and join up for missions whenever they are available or things are big enough to need a lot of people

Fantastic Four; X-Men; Champions; Defenders; all the independent heroes, they can all be Avengers if they're available.

A few changes that might result:

The actual group dynamics are significantly different compared to what is generally expected. Everyone is pretty much likely to be friendly with each other on some level but its not the same as normal variations of the Avengers. There's also no defined leader; there's a few CHARACTERS that are seen as leaders and tend to attract attention, but they're not in a formal role. Black Panther, Storm, Captain America/Nomad, anyone who is conventionally a leader of their own groups (Miss Marvel, Cyclops, Mister Fantastic, and so on) would qualify.

Accordingly, while they would probably have a found family dynamic its less of a specific group and more of a very fluid, dynamic shift for people who drift in and out as circumstances warrant.

The Avengers rarely form over what might be called regular threats; they don't usually show up to deal with gangsters, robberies, supervillains that are usually one-on-one, or any sort of conventional crime. This isn't to say that they don't CARE because of course they do. But the Avengers form over much larger threats and they're unlikely to be called up when the Shocker hits up a bank, though they MIGHT be called together to talk the Hulk down from one of his bad brain day moments.

There is much less of plot herding; characters tending to have enclosed stories where it feels like genuinely important problems are ignored by characters that DON'T normally deal with those things. For example, the real reason the Avengers don't deal with threats to mutantkind is that this is an X-Men specific thing and would be too complicated to figure out between different writers. Here, everyone deals with threats to mutants; Iron Man, for example, has a giant autonomous mecha laser floating around in space to shoot down Sentinels whenever they pop up. (It's an AI. In its free time it writes treatises on the fundamental horror of humanity's capacity to be cruel to itself and its probably about two and a half hours from becoming a superhero in its own right, or a lawyer.)

There's a LOT more of casual friendships outside of the conventional teams, and as a result, characters develop in ways outside their normal comfort zones and the status quo is quite different; for instance, if you presume that Hulk (a constant outsider constantly melting down) is at least on a casual basis with the X-Men (a team of outsiders, freaks and outcasts whose internal politics and conflicts are so extreme that it makes actual soap operas look restrained), he is going to have people who understand and can bond with him in a way he normally doesn't get. It's similar to how Beast was, as an Avenger, much more of a comedic character rather than the super genius, which gives the air that surrounded by other smart people he let his fur down, so to speak.

Thor and the other Norse god characters map to Norse mythology very specifically. This isn't strictly related but goes without saying.

Hear me out…

Bring back the hulk alter ego as gray hulk/Joe fixit. The savage hulk persona is sort of like an infant, pure emotion but in the body of a monster. In Thor: Ragnarok he acts like a toddler since he’s been in his hulk form for two straight years, essentially as mentally developed as a toddler that age

So he lets banner take over in endgame to have “the best of both worlds,” but maybe hulk is still developing since his body is still physically present while banner is in control. So the whole time, hulk grows into a cunning conniving bastard who wants to take back control and it becomes a literal power struggle between the two personas again. In the comics, gray hulk becomes a gangster in Las Vegas so he could be part of some kind of vigilante crime syndicate or something idk. Banner blacks out and wakes up panicking to undo the damage hulk is doing again, but this time it’s pre planned methodical trouble instead of actual property damage

It would be a fun chance to introduce wolverine as the antagonist hunting hulk down for department h, low key doing detective work and following whatever weird criminal activity hulk is up to as Bruce tries to undo it and evade being captured

They could even include Jen for a cool buddy team up

Also Ty Burrell was set up as green hair Fabio scientist, Doc Samson and this would also be the perfect time to bring him back as Bruce’s sort of therapist. I’d even take a cameo in She-Hulk, I’d just like to see this play out

REBOOT: She isn't Thor's sister she's not half Asgardian and she has a new origin.An angel named "Aldrifael" was cast out of Heaven for constantly interfering with humanity. She tried to prevent the Crusades, she tried to stop the witch hunts and she even tried to save Joan of Arc from burning. Going against laws of the heavens she refused to answer for her "transgressions" a high angel Freyja killed Aldrifael's body, and her soul was cast out into the void to never resurrect in Heaven. After an untold measure of time drifting through reality, her soul found its way to Earth first crash landing into Central Park then disappearing in a spark of light. Finding her way, she merged into the body of a super model called "Ania Ambers" and the two became one being. Creating "Angela".

To describe Ania before merging with the angel, she was model who was slowly beginning to see her career as pointless, and it had no meaning. When waking up naked next to her boyfriend Ethan she looks into the mirror and finds herself beefier with abs (kind of like spider-man) and feels not just surprised but somehow great. Until she starts sensing and hearing things. And in an incident, she gets mugged by a gang and their leader starts behaving hysterically and more psychotic even scaring the gangsters, he begins to morph and turn into a demonic monster. And in a panic, she bursts into flames (unknowingly) and fights and kills the demon.

And to avoid the Mary-sue trope. Ania hears a voice in her head telling and training her how to control her powers and to have trust and faith in The Ribbons. And it's not two beings in one body kind of story. The Angel and Ania are completely one being their souls synchronized the angel loves who she loves, she is the angel, and the angel is her. And at some point Aniaand the Angel do talk to one another in the psychic realm. 

And even though they're one being Aldrifael can't share her memoires of Heaven. Because in her words: "If I were to show you just a glimpse of Heaven. You will be consumed with obsession and would do anything to go there."

Lastly as for Thor. No longer brother and sister. But that doesn't mean she can't be friends with Thor and tease flirt with him.

Ray Stevenson 1964-2023

May 2023 has been particularly cruel. I lost my brother unexpectedly near the start of the month and I’m pretty fucked up still.

Last week, Andy Rourke passed. The Smiths quite literally created the songs that saved my life and Rourke's basslines still beat through my veins. (Like Mark Hollis’ lyrics still rattle in my head, and Andy Fletcher's death punctured my balloon of youth. - what a cruel year!)

Ray Stevenson trending on Twitter yesterday sparked two competing thoughts: 

1. Fuck, please don’t be something racist or gross.

2. Fuck, please don’t be dead.

So, at least it wasn’t racist or gross. Fuck!

Like many people, I first discovered this talented actor in HBO’s Rome. Tutus Pullo is one of my favorite character archetypes, the happy go lucky brute with a bit of brains and steadfast loyalty.

The next time I saw him was in the role of Issak Sirko in Dexter. The character checked every single box for me. Hot, well-dressed, silver fox, extremely competent, burning the world to avenge his murdered boyfriend, completely at ease with ultraviolence.

The turning point in my Ray Stevenson journey came in summer of 2020. Pandemic lockdown, peaceful protest turned smash-and-grab riots in my city, and shit financials, 2020 was grim. On the high seas, I found a fluffy summertime show called Reef Break starring a ton of people I’d never heard of and Ray Stevenson. This was the perfect bit of mindless tv to ease me through the grim and, my goodness, he was spectacular in it as Jake Elliot. Older, thicker, and full on gray bear!

Ray Stevenson became my 2020 pandemic project: track down everything in which he’s appeared. This was an easy enough task because my dude was a damned fine actor. 

Aside from Pullo and Sirko, other standout roles, for me, include the kind Gigolo opposite Helena Bonham Carter in The Theory of Flight,  gangster, Danny Green in Kill the Irishman, Gruner, the creature fucker in Cold Skin, and Blackbeard in Black Sails.  

He was also great in cameo roles. The Other Guys is a fun flick and he lands each of his scenes. I legit teared up when Volstagg died in Thor: Ragnarok. G.I. Joe Retaliation was not a great film (when, oh when will we get Xamot and Tomax on the big scream!?), but Stevenson as Firefly was...fire!

So, I now I have a hard drive full of *almost* everything. The plan was to make a Ray Stevenson vid at some point. I guess I have a new 2023 project.

Idk what else to answer that won’t make me sound like a broken record, so I’ll point out one thing I hate about fan-dom in general: overhyping writers/directors and then melting down when they inevitably don’t meet their expectations. 

It happened with Wh*don, it happened with the Russos, it happened with Taika. First Wh*don was THE guy who actually cared for all the characters, the bonafide nerd who could do the superhero genre justice; by the time aou came out he was just another fake feminist with a hate boner for jocks, so people welcomed the Russos because tws did so well (plus, it didn’t help that all those rumors/allegations about Wh*don resurfaced). But then they inevitably couldn’t meet all the absurd expectations fandom put on them, so people reasoned that they were always shitty directors, and that tws was just a stroke of luck. Lather, rinse repeat with Taika, the guy who finally got Thor right, until Love and Thunder came out. And then people were all well, actually, the first two Thor movies were always the best ones imho...

Like, the truth is that all these movies have good and bad elements and directors are just people who uh, probably had only a little say in how they had to leave things in order for the next project to make sense, and as such, you shouldn’t idealise them or tear down everything they made just because your internet bubble worked out how the next movie should go.

Hm, I don’t really like mafia AUs in general, for obvious reasons, but I especially don't get how Steve, the guy who doesn't like bullies, would be okay with a partner who's basically just a big bully. Or him being the gangster. Then again, I get that there's the whole Hollywood filter to the idea, so🤷‍♀️ I accept its not for me.

I also find that soulmate AUs can get a bit boring for me if there are no stakes. Like if you hate each other/have tried to kill each other? Yes please! But if it's two virtual strangers who suddenly fall in love because of a couple of conveniently placed words, then meh. I don't hate it, but I would probably scroll past.

Lol I'm too old to be ashamed of liking fictional stuff 😂 Idk, I came out of BP2 really really liking Namor/Shuri, which probably the more pearl-clutching fringes of the fandom finds problematique since he killed her mom and destroyed her country. And also almost killed her as well. But!! I love an obsessive villain who thinks their opponent is the only actually worthy opponent ever. Also, they’re hot.

I guess another ""guilty"" pleasure, is genderbent/cisswap aus, which I blame rageprufrock’s works for (here and here). One, I love to think about how different Steve getting the serum would’ve gone; two, I love to think about how different her life would’ve been in the future. Also, she’d be hot.

Yeah, I know we basically get that with the Peggy!Cap What if, but I love Steve so 🤷‍♀️(also I’ve had a huge crush on Blake Lively for ages so it gives me a chance to imagine her as fem!Steve).
