Translation Work in Yokai Watch.
One day will come the time for Yokai Watch 4 to finally be localized around the world, for american and European fans to enjoy.
But when translating a game, numerous factors have to be taken into account. Translating places, concepts, and of course... yokai and the different Watchers.
So, while waiting for official names, here are some ideas we had with a friend of mine of names to give to the different human characters of the game !
Don't hesitate to share any of your ideas as well !
(Also this post isn't meant to be taken too seriously, it's not as long and developped as usual so please take it with a grain of salt !)
1/ Akinori : Esteban.
I know Akinori already has Bruno as an english name, but considering the Encanto character bearing the same name... changing it doesn't sound too far-fetched ! Esteban could be a good name for him, as it is also the main character of "The Mysterious Cities of Gold", with a personality greatly matching Akinori's. Moreover, Esteban is traveling in a golden bird, that we could associate to Suzaku.
2/ Haruya and Ganryuu : Alan and Yohann.
Remaining in Shadow Side, Haruya and Ganryuu could get matching names in pronunciation, as to link them in their objective of finding their princess. This is why Alan and Yohann could correspond well to them.
3/ Shin/Itsuki/Tae : Martin/Basil, Alistair and Rose.
And lastly, moving on to Forever Friends, names for Shin, Itsuki and Tae could be interpreted in multiple ways.
Shin's german name Martin sounded quite fitting for him, as this name usually reflects an altruistic person, with a fear of the unknown. His alternative name Basil is linked to Tae's name Rose, in order to hint their future marriage. As for Itsuki, Alistair also reflected a lot of his personality, as it is a name corresponding to an ambitious soul unafraid of danger, and seeking for other's approval. Lastly, Tae's name Rose is a mirror of Shin's, both of them being flowers.
These are all the names for now, don't hesitate to tell me if I should do more !

Tumblr Holy Grail War, Another Start: Wave 3 - Day 4 (Team Saber)
Tumblr media
_CASTER: "Here you go. This should be suitable, yes?"
Musashi: "Ooh. I'm feeling a bit stronger!"
Musashi's been upgraded by Caster! She got... 1 Command Spell, and a new Noble Phantasm!
Musashi is on her last wound! She can only take one more before fading away!
Team Saber has one remaining Command Spell!
Skills:
Heavenly Demonic Thundering Eye (EX) - When fighting in a free-for-all, gain +10% to your final score, and reduce their scores by -5%. If fighting a Servant one-on-one, if the gap between scores is above 20%, inflict 2 wounds.
Fifth Force (A) - Instead of a 3% boost to 1-on-1 confrontations as per 'Saber' restrictions, it's instead raised to 8%. If victory over another Servant during a combat poll is above 50%, the opposing Servant gains two 'wounds' instead of one.
Battle Continuation (EX) - If she loses a confrontation while on her final wound, if there's only a 10% difference between the scores, she can slip out unscathed.
Investigation Skill, Magic Resistance (A): When attacked during 'Investigation', gain +5% defensive boost.
Miyamoto Musashi's Noble Phantasms:
Six Realms Five Rings - The Divine Figure of Kurikara (A) - Nullifies any bonuses the target Servant may have, and inflicts 2 'wounds' rather than just one. The boost is +35% to your combat poll results, rather than the standard 20%
This Noble Phantasm costs 3 Command Spells to trigger.
Ganryuu-jima (EX) - Creates a bounded field that provides a -15% demerit to 'Knight-class, Caster-class, and Extra-class', and a -10% demerit to 'Rider, Assassin and Berserker-class' Servants, while also supplying Saber with a +5% boost during the combat round.
This Noble Phantasm costs 1 Command Spell to trigger.

🐉 for the ask game?
🐉 – If you could only create for one type of au, what would it be?
I haven’t actually written an actual AU but so far I’m thinking of a jidaigeki-ish AU based on this chibi set I did a while ago that references various historical events/legends/fictions in Japan:
Kai and Nya were separated when they were still kids due to a war and he then set on a journey to find her. He eventually finds her, alive and well, and at some point the siblings have a friendly rivalry. Both have developed their own fighting style as well while they were away from each other (parallel to Musashi’s Nitouryuu (dual sword) style and Kojirou’s Ganryuu style including Tsubame Gaeshi).
During this journey, Kai meets Lloyd who tells him that he needs to gather some comrades as soon as possible. After finding Nya, the siblings then joins Lloyd’s journey to find more comrades.
Cole the warrior monk used to rob people’s weapons (he prefers to call it confiscation) due to his disappointment to people abusing weapons to take someone else’s life; until when he met Jay and lost in a match. The latter reminded him that someone would need those to defend themselves (parallel to Benkei and 999 weapons).
Zane worked for a magistracy as a detective, along with PIXAL as his sidekick. He used to despise samurai for the terrible treatment they did to the commoners; until he witnesses the siblings saving a commoner’s life, and he slowly warms up to them. Legend says it that his throw is almost 100% accurate (parallel to Heiji’s coin throw).
I can’t explain the following ones properly but I might give a gist of them.
After everyone is finally gathered, Lloyd explains his reason: to end the war caused by someone who used to follow him and then deceived him: Pythor (parallel to Jiraiya’s arch-nemesis, Orochimaru, who used to be his follower IIRC). Apparently this war caused most of the problems witnessed by them.
Everyone immediately agree to join Lloyd for various reasons: the siblings don’t want anyone else’s happiness to be snatched by the war, Cole and Jay want the weapon abuse to be stopped for once and all, Zane and PIXAL want the difference between classes to be diminished. They didn’t get along at first, but they eventually become a better team thanks to Lloyd’s wise words (kind of referenced from events of Bakumatsu era after seeing dramas that take place in that time setting).
Thanks for the ask!

Fate and Phantasms #39: Sasaki Kojirou
Tumblr media
Today on Fate and Phantasms, we’re building the savior of France himself, Sasaki Kojirou. He may be an assassin, but Sasaki prefers honorable duels, so this build is mostly fighter with a dash of rogue for flavor. His impeccable swordplay makes him a terror in close-range combat.
As always, a spreadsheet for this build can be found here, or you can read the level-by-level breakdown below the cut!
Race and Background
Like many servants, Sasaki Kojirou is a Human, giving him +1 to all stats. In Fate, the man who would become Kojirou very explicitly came from nothing and did not gain fame in his life, but the historical Kojirou founded the Ganryuu school of sword fighting. This would put his background closest to the Mercenary Veteran, with an altered feat regarding knowledge of other sword fighting schools rather than mercenary companies. This gives Sasaki proficiency in Athletics and Persuasion.
Stats
Sasaki’s swordplay is absolute, so he needs his Dexterity as high as possible. He also has a keen eye for detail, so his Wisdom is next. After that is Strength, his power comes from technique, but he can still have conventional power too. Following that is his Constitution, he can camp out in front of a temple for ages so he’s got to be a little tough. He’s a pretty easygoing person, letting others dominate the conversation, so his Charisma is a little low. We’re dumping Intelligence, though. The man who became Sasaki never got an education, and all his focus went into mastering an impossible skill, which for anyone else would have been a terrible life choice.
Levels
1. Rogue 1: We’re starting off the build as a rogue, because they have more skills and saves that we want. Speaking of, you’re proficient in Dexterity and Intelligence saves as well as Acrobatics, Perception, Insight, and Stealth when you start level one. You also have Expertise in two skills, doubling your proficiency bonus in Stealth and Perception. You learn to Sneak Attack, dealing extra damage to creatures you have advantage against or who’re dealing with other people, and Thieves’ Cant, a language that thieves know.
2. Rogue 2: Second level rogues become more nimble with a Cunning Action, letting you use your bonus action to Dash, Disengage, or Hide. This is probably why you can walk away from Saber without causing an attack of opportunity, then immediately jump back into the action when Archer tries to ruin things.
3. Rogue 3: At third level you get your subclass, the Assassin. I know, the assassin class, full of assassins? Wild. When you take the subclass, you get proficiency with the Disguise Kit and Poisoner’s Kit, two things you aren’t going to use, because you like a fair fight. You also learn how to Assassinate, giving you advantage against creatures who haven’t taken a turn yet, and any hit you score on surprised creatures are auto-crits. Even in a duel, killing someone before they can even draw their sword is a pretty good idea.
4. Fighter 1: Speaking of fair fights, let’s make sure you can survive one. First level fighters get a Fighting Style, and we’re dipping into Tasha’s Cauldron to grab Blind Fighting, giving you 10 feet of blindsight. This lets you fight dramatically in the moonlight without being so gauche as to have Darkvision. Fighting someone else without darkvision will also give you straight up advantage, so dramatic moonlight duels are a great thing to invest in. You also gain a Second Wind, a bonus action you can use once per short rest to heal yourself. Finally, fighters can use any weapon they like, so you can pick up the closest thing to a katana that still has finesse, a scimitar.
5. Fighter 2: You gain one use of Action Surge per short rest, giving you an additional action in a single turn. You don’t get another sneak attack, but more chances to use it is never a bad deal.
6. Fighter 3: At third level you become a Samurai, gaining proficiency in History thanks to the grail helping you out. You also have a Fighting Spirit, a bonus action that you can use three times per day, giving you advantage on all attacks that turn and 5 temporary hit points.
7. Fighter 4: With your first ASI you become Mobile, adding 10′ to your movement speed, letting you dash through difficult terrain, and making it harder for enemies you hit to hit back when you run away.
8. Fighter 5: You get an extra attack, so now you can attack twice per turn, or four times with your action surge.
9. Fighter 6: The Alert feat makes you really good at guarding places, and also really good in general, adding a flat 5 to your initiative rolls, preventing you from ever being surprised, and preventing creatures from having advantage on you because you can’t see them. This means if you’re fighting where people have difficulty seeing -the dark of night, a chaotic battlefield, a smoke-filled burning building- you’ll have advantage on your attacks and they’ll have disadvantage. It’s not unfair if you’re just that good.
10. Fighter 7: Seventh level samurai become Elegant Courtiers. This lets you add your wisdom modifier to persuasion checks, and you become proficient in Wisdom saves. You’re a pretty calm guy, and you managed to talk your way out of getting murdered by the seven heroic swordsmen multiple times.
11. Fighter 8: It’s time we started using these Ability Score Improvements for ability scores. Use this one on your Dexterity for more and harder hits.
12. Fighter 9: You become Indomitable, letting you reroll failed saves once per long rest.
13. Fighter 10: You have a Tireless Spirit, so if you start combat with zero fighting spirits remaining, you get one more. Also, your fighting spirit improves at this level, and now gives you 10 temporary hit points.
14. Fighter 11: Your Swallow Reversal gains its third sword with another Extra Attack. Now you can hit people six times per turn if you really want to.
15. Rogue 4: Use your next ASI to round out your Wisdom and Constitution. More wisdom means better saves against illusions and mind control, and more constitution means you’ll survive long enough to enjoy that.
16. Rogue 5: You can now react to make an Uncanny Dodge, halving the damage of an attack that hits you. We’re not sticking around as a rogue long enough for proper evasion, so this and Mobile are the best you’re getting.
17. Fighter 12: Your next ASI maxes out your Dexterity for better hits and better not-getting-hits.
18. Fighter 13: You gain a second use of Indomitable per long rest, because being that cool once per day isn’t enough for you.
19. Fighter 14: Use your last ASI for more Wisdom, because you’ve got to be really in tune with yourself to do the impossible.
20. Fighter 15: With your capstone level, your Fighting Spirit improves once again, now adding 15 temporary hit points to your pool. You also learn how to Rapid Strike, allowing you to split an attack you have advantage on into two attacks once per turn. You should have advantage on almost every attack you make by this point, and even if you don’t, you can just give yourself advantage anyway. The extra attack will also probably have advantage.
Pros: This build is dead simple to fight with: slice the other person until they stop moving. You’re fast enough to close the gap quickly, are hard to hit thanks to your high dex and mobility, and you abuse advantage rules to their absolute limit. If you don’t mind bending your character a bit, ask that nice ninja kid to lend you some of his smoke bombs (or an eversmoking bottle) and become a god on the battlefield.
Cons: This build, like Sasaki himself, only focuses on swordplay. Anything that can fly (ironically) or resists nonmagical damage is going to give you a hard time. Also, using the build to its fullest extent with items like the eversmoking bottle or spells like darkness and fog cloud means there’s going to be a radius around you at all times that the rest of the party can’t function in, which might cause some hurt feelings.
But you’re not here for their feelings, you’re here to use a sword really, really well. Just go out there and be the best you you can b-
Sorry.
Next up: The true Assassin.

The Fighter’s Bond
Gaolang Wongsawat and Saw Paing Yoroizuka
Their conversations could be severe, with words almost too harsh for friends. Yet, this was just the way they functioned.
Spoilers for the later chapters of Kengan Ashura
Upon retrospect, Gaolang’s injuries were not as bad as they could have been. Out of all the damage, his shattered right fist was the worst; knowing the Fang’s strength, it was already miraculous that he was still alive, let alone able to pull himself out of the stadium with minimal help. Especially since the atmosphere within that battlefield turned from a ‘desire for victory’ to a ‘desire for survival’. Despite Kaneda and the nurse’s advice to rest in the sickbay for a while, Gaolang left immediately after his fist was treated. As King Rama’s subject, he needed to report to him as soon as possible to apologise for that defeat.  So he took a direct route there, politely waving away Kaneda’s offer to help. Gaolang didn’t expect to run into anyone, but perhaps he should have; after all, Saw Paing was on the island, too.
“Gaolaaang!! I saw your match! You’re amazing, you know that!? I’m all fired up again!!”
“… So I’ve heard.” He, and everyone else on Ganryuu island. “At least you’re not wallowing in self pity anymore.”
Gaolang had never seen that side of Saw Paing before- so hopeless and miserable. Truthfully, he had suspected something more had happened for the Burmese fighter to lose faith in himself, but he’d felt so sickened at seeing him disheartened that he didn’t care to ask. And he wouldn’t.
“Yeah! And it’s all thanks to you! You gave it your all- just as expected of my rival!!” It’s at this point of their conversations that Gaolang considered wearing ear plugs- but now he had a reason to excuse himself and leave. Or… that’s what his plan was, until Saw Paing’s eyes drifted to his bandaged hand, and his face took on a serious expression.
“Your fist…” He began.
“It’s broken. I’ll be wearing this for a while.”
For Saw Paing to be at a loss of words was rare; before he could say anything, Gaolang sighed. “It’s my problem, not yours.”
“Not my problem? You’re my rival!” Saw Paing stepped forward. He was just barely shorter than Gaolang, yet with the way he was glaring, he seemed to grow taller. “It’s definitely my problem if you won’t be able to fight anymore! How am I going to defeat you otherwise?!”
Any outsider witnessing this conversation might think, ‘that doesn’t sound like a good thing to say to someone who lost their match and shattered their fist- especially not with an expression like that.’ And if they’d heard Gaolang’s outburst just a few hours before, they would probably tell him he’d gone too far.
But his and Saw Paing’s relationship was not a regular friendship. It went deeper than that: a rivalry and camaraderie that only those who’d fought each other could truly understand. Saw Paing’s goal was to beat him, but at the same time, they pulled each other up to improve. Seeing Saw Paing’s sudden disheartenment, solely at a single loss that wasn’t even to him, was an insult.
People could say that they were too harsh with each other, and they would be right. But to the two of them, that harshness was a form of encouragement- a reminder of what they strived for. And hearing Saw Paing say such words meant he finally regained that fiery spirit.
“With your tactics, I’m sure I could beat you without my right hand. You need to work on that if you want to get better… well, I’ve told you that already. But it’s up to you if you want to listen.”
“Like I’d fight you if you weren’t at your best! It doesn’t mean anything unless I beat you when we’re both at our peak condition! So you’d better heal up soon, or we’ll never settle that score, Gaolaaaang!”
Once more, Gaolang sighed. “We’re indoors, Saw Paing, you need to be quieter.” If he didn’t end this conversation now, the bodyguards would probably come to tell them to stop making a ruckus. And besides, he really did need to speak with King Rama. As he walked past Saw Paing, he paused.
“I hope you’ve improved by the next time we fight. An easy fight would be boring.” Gaolang didn’t wait for a reaction- because Saw Paing’s declaration would be loud enough that the whole island would know he accepted the challenge.
