The funny thing about reading fan translations of manga is that sometimes the translator changes between chapters.

So when there is a character whose gender is ambiguous in the Japanese version it's always a fun little guessing game of 'How will this translator refer to this character?'

Sometimes they just default to he/him cause male is often assumed to be the default.

Sometimes they spice it up & go with she/her.

If they can't decide they'll just use the characters name.

And very very rarely they actually use they/them.
