The Neverending History of Discrimination
Hi! It's Teddie - let's talk discrimination.
I recently had the opportunity to read Mar Hicks’ “A Feature, Not a Bug” where Hicks discussed the explicitly ingrained role of gender discrimination and privilege in Silicon Valley and technology as a whole. One particular quote stuck out to me:
"[…] gender discrimination is baked in to the structures of high tech economies themselves, a critical part of their focus on concentrating power in the hands of those who already traditionally wield it. Gender discrimination is not a bug—it’s a feature."
Tumblr media
What interested me the most was the way that Hicks’ article describes exactly how gender, sexuality, racial, ethnic, and other discrimination was incorporated into the evolution of modern technology, so that not only does it enforce pre-existing biases and prejudices against marginalized identities, but it also hides it behind a relatable valuation of talent. This connected deeply to a philosophical author George Yancy, who introduced the white gaze into a discussion of embodiment for racialized bodies. In his essay, “Confiscated Bodies,” Yancy literally coins the term white gaze to represent the way that in his, and quoted, experience, white people look and otherwise physically interact with “black bodies”. Interestingly, Yancy discusses the way that black bodies are singled out; objectified, sexualized, “problematized” – just for existing against a backdrop of white “normalcy”. By establishing a social norm of whiteness (this can be similarly extended to ability, beauty, gender, sexuality, and other races), the world, we, have conditioned the “abnormal” (those deviating from our previously established norms) to be something to be seen, confiscated, even owned. Then, even in situations where no one is being explicitly racist (/sexist/ableist/etc – you get it), these ingrained concepts of normalcy are still portrayed and act discriminatorily against these marginalized groups. This is exactly what Hicks is discussing, just on a larger scale; even if this scenario wasn’t intentional, it still allows these misguided norms to persist and exist despite decades of protest.
Tumblr media
What’s more, Hicks perfectly describes another behaviour that Yancy writes about in his text: where this “metanarrative structure of whiteness” a large portion of its power is the fact that each time the white gaze acts, regardless of how intense the act might be, it continually suggests that racism (among all discrimination) is something that is historical, something natural, something not man-made. But this is false – racism is not a historical fact, it majorly came into play when colonizers stole human beings from their homes and treated them like garbage.
Tumblr media
All those arguments that say we’re naturally trained to recognize abnormalities, that ancient civilizations were also racist, that it takes a long time to unlearn racism, are just not true. Sure, we as humans have exceptional pattern recognition, and can isolate things that don’t fit that pattern – but nowhere in that psychology does there exist a natural tendency to point out these differences and shame or discriminate against them. And unfortunately, the sentimentality that some people have for these “historical” acts of discrimination are not only unfounded, but just completely not an excuse…? Just because several generations were raised believing that the colour of your skin determines your worth, that does not mean you have any right to believe that same thing. Be better than them. (Like honestly, they also believed the sun revolved around the earth. But also, people still believe the earth is flat. So do with that what you will.)
Tumblr media
(LMAO)
As Hicks claims, there’s not really any way we can just add more women to the field of technology, or idolize the women that make it far (because this only engenders more discriminatory behaviour by recognizing the outliers, or special cases of success). Unfortunately, we can’t demand these racist, ableist, sexist, “misguided but destructive” technologies and social constructs to collapse, as it would be impossible to undo everything that has already happened and start at the very beginning. But what we can do is see these hidden forms of misogyny, racism, discrimination, and from them learn how we can better understand one another as human beings and stop being “trapped by its negative effects”.

PJO/Harry Potter AU (Fuck JKR this is not in support of her she’s a fuck) where Fem!Harry Potter is Rosalie ‘Sally’ Potter who meets a handsome man by the beach and ends up with a baby.
This of course is Poseidon she meets. She isn’t to shocked, gods being real is known among wizards. However, she didn’t expect to carry a demigod. She’s happy until Molly talks about a suitable orphanage for the baby.
This is when Sally here learns that Demigods cannot be wizards or witches. The godly blood overwhelms the potential for magic. Usually these children are abandoned.
Like hell will she do that.
Sally leaves England where people clamour for her to obey the unwritten rules, to bow to them. She’s followed by Ron, Hermione, Charlie, George, Percy Weasley, Neville, Luna and Oliver Wood. These alone are the people who back her. She takes Teddy with her, after Andromeda shows some prejudice against the werewolf part of Teddy.
Sally Potter names her demigod child Perseus James Potter. Perseus as a way to honour her godfather by using a constellation, while also being a myth she hopes brings good luck.
Of course his nickname becomes Percy, Little Percy or Percy Jr. it’s cute though and she doesn’t mind.
There is no Gabe. There is Grover and Brunner and Yancy but with Percy knowing magic no secrets are hidden. Chiron whispers his worries to Sally about the upcoming summer, yet she isn’t worried.
Until the Minotaur attacks and she is taken to the Underworld.
Then canon becomes very prominent.

"Disabled people have always been among the chief intended targets of all forms of incarceration, representing the largest marginalized population in jails and prisons (and almost one hundred percent of those confined in other locked institutions). Disabled people are disproportionately represented in jail/prison for two main reasons. First, the criminal legal system targets and disadvantages disabled people at every phase of the criminal legal process, and second because carceral institutions are disabling by design (so those who enter jail, prison and other locked institutions without disabilities almost assuredly acquire disabilities while incarcerated).
...There are undeniable similarities, connections and overlays between Black Codes, Indian Removal and Appropriations Acts, Jim Crow, manumission, Public Charge Laws; unsightly beggar ordinances, anti-tramping, anti-solicitation and anti-vagrancy laws; and convict leasing, vendue, sharecropping, peonage, sheltered workshop and modern prison labor systems. The interchangeable and often indistinguishable sites where those targeted by these laws and systems inevitably find themselves — often cyclically — reveals the ease with which powerholders leverage ableism to categorize and (re)distribute marginalized people into and across carceral institutions on the basis of purported health, criminality and vulnerability. Some of these places include: plantations, stockades, privately owned and operated “homes,” and “houses of corrections” (i.e., jails/prisons); poor houses, workhouses, poor farms and homeless “shelters”; asylums, county infirmaries and prison hospitals; reservations, boarding and residential “schools,” orphanages and boot camps, among others. While the stated purposes of these institutions and practices always includes a positive spin (e.g., aid, treatment, cure, rehabilitation, correction, discipline, vocational skills development and proving, etc.), all are carceral regardless of their euphemistic name or stated benevolent rationale or claim. This is the backdrop against which we must understand and challenge eugenics like that proposed by Mayor Adams and other government officials nationwide." (Talila Lewis from an interview with George Yancy at Truthout).
Read this amazing article diving into incarceration and ableism from Talila Lewis who is an incredible activist and scholar.

underrated lightning thief moments I hope stays in the show:
percy’s “learning montage” at camp where he tries different skills with chiron, annabeth, grover, and the cabin eleven kids to see what he’s good at, but the only thing he does successfully is canoeing
a montage of all the field trips percy has messed up in the past, including the cannonball hitting the bus and the “unplanned swim”
the camp half-blood food offerings at dinner
the hacky sac game at the bus stop where grover eats the apple core
percy’s experiences at yancy!! show me the rich delinquents he hates, the beautiful view from his dorm he ends up missing, his illegal candy selling operation
how disgusting gabe leaves percys bedroom while he’s away. Gabe’s lack of hygiene, hoarding, and mess is really emphasized in the book— I want a frustrated Percy coming home and seeing his room filled to the brim with Gabe’s trash so we see how bad his relationship with him is
the entire waterland scene, and Percy talking to the broadcast. it’s not your parents tunnel of love! also annabeth collecting Aphrodite’s scarf as a memory of the trip, since that comes back in later books as a callback!
crusty’s waterbed shop
groovy disco darren
poseidon complimenting sally
percy exploding the toilets and getting everyone wet except himself
dionysus begrudgingly teaching percy how to play pinochle
percy telling the reporters about how he knew that gabe would be so overjoyed to see him, that he’d offer everyone in the city a free appliance to his electronics store
Luke’s Iris message conversation with the trio at the gas station, where annabeth yells at the truck driver and Luke lowkey tries to mess with Percy’s head by implying that she stole the helm of darkness
Chiron as Mr. Bruner, show us the fun class days with the sword fights and chalk!
callbacks to the movies and musicals that I want to see:
poker face being played at the lotus casino
the D.O.A song being played on the radio at the waiting lobby of the Underworld, or maybe Charon offhandedly mentioning at some point that they have all the greats (Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Mozart). Maybe the Josh Groban joke?
this is a pen. a pen.
the good kid theme as a motif for Percy or Luke or both at some point, especially if it plays during their fight
Chris McCarrell as Apollo (or maybe even older Percy that appears in Circe’s mirror), and Logan Lerman as Poseidon
maybe the lightning thief graffiti art in the background, or as the title sequence for one of the episodes (in the same style as the Umbrella Academy where the titles pop up in random places every episode)
Uma Thurman as Medusa again because she ate
Bianca and Nico reference at the casino!
the visualization of their dyslexia with the letters swirling around and flickering from English to Ancient Greek, since I thought that was so cool in the movies. also, in the next season for the Sea of Monsters, a visual representation of Percy seeing the longitude and latitude at sea
George Salazar as a member of the Council of Cloven Elders
reblog with more!! I want to see your ideas!

I love all the helmets and stuff really lets you know what’s going on
Oh noooooo oh boy oh buddy oh wow that hurt
Sorry he’s making Hermes feel so empathetic which is exactly how he is in the books. He’s good!
OOP
Were those the di Angelos? They were brunette and small (still reaching)
Oh so that’s why they mentioned days earlier I see
HIS KEYS?
Are George and Martha on there are they wondering what’s happening

more deconstruction of "normal" as an obfuscating curtain around supremacy & its concomitant oppression more more!! (an interview by george yancy with subini annamma abt DisCrit, the intersection of disability studies & critical race theory)
some excerpts:
"These scholars were naming the ways ableism animated who we center as the “normal,” and how we draw boundaries around that conception of normal, and punish those outside those walls. In schools, we seek out youth we position as “abnormal” and try to cure, segregate or funnel them out of public spaces."
"Those intellectual ancestors, both those who have passed on and those still with us, created a space for DisCrit to recognize that racism and ableism are interdependent, that they depend on and inform each other. That is, if racism is the ideology for situating specific people in subordinated locations, then ableism is how that goal is achieved — by situating the learning, thinking, and behaviors of Black and Brown people as “less than” and “inferior.” Racism and ableism are mutually constitutive because they need each other to survive; whiteness needed to “other” Black and Brown people, and did so through ableism. Both CRT and DS scholars and public intellectuals left space for us to do this work; to seriously consider how racism and ableism inform one another and are normalized, not aberrant in society. DisCrit uses specific tenets to build on this conceptual foundation to name how, in a system of white supremacy, anti-Blackness and settler colonialism, whiteness defines the normal and desired individual; and positions all Black and Brown folks as abnormal."
"I know you’ve engaged in a discussion with the brilliant T.L. Lewis, and they have described how mass incarceration is a disability justice issue. So I’ll focus on how mass incarceration is a racial and disability justice issue because it targets disabled Black and Brown youth specifically. In other words, age does not protect disabled Black and Brown children because they are not imagined as innocent (what Black women and other women of color scholars, such as Jamilia Blake and Thalia González, have named as adultification) and they are also imagined as hyper-strong and aggressive. Instead, disabled Black and Brown kids are targeted and punished because of their disabilities. Moreover, Black and Brown youth are disabled by prison conditions, which cause trauma. Family separation through incarceration — whether in the name of rehabilitation, child welfare or mental health care — are all forms of punishment for perceived deviance. The abuse and neglect in these systems is well documented. We lock up what we are afraid of — if justice is what love looks like in public, then mass incarceration is hate institutionalized. And in the worst cases, our babies die in these hate-filled cages, babies like Cedric “C.J.” Lofton, Loyce Tucker, Cornelius Frederick, Gynnya McMillen, Elord Revolte, Andre Sheffield, Robert Wright, and more unnamed babies. Or they die while being rounded up to be put in these cages like Ma’Khia Bryant, Tamir Rice, Iremamber Skyap, Adam Toledo, and [others]. Mass incarceration is a racial and disability justice issue for Black and Brown disabled youth because it targets and creates disability, all while trying to eradicate their power and resistance."
"Moreover, disabled Black and Brown girls are experiencing higher rates of these negative outcomes than their nondisabled peers. When these disabled Black and Brown girls are abused by the system and their stories become public, their disabilities are often erased. We imagine them as what scholar Michele Goodwin discusses as “too intersectional,” when their disability or queerness is viewed as something to disassociate them from, trying to cleave their identities into something closer to the norm. Yet, this misses the fact that these Black and Brown girls are being punished because of their disabilities, and that disability labels and laws are not protecting them. We must recognize that Black and Brown disabled girls are not broken, our systems are broken. Carceral geographies threaten Black and Brown disabled girls. We must respond by loving Black and Brown girls in their full humanity."
I want to end with what you envision as hope. Like W.E.B. Du Bois, I am not hopeless, but I am unhopeful regarding the racist attitudes, racist practices, racist habits, racist ideologies and racist structures within the U.S. This includes how racism toxically lives intramurally or extramurally, and this includes how racism functions through ableism — or conversely, how ableism functions through racism. This is another way of saying that racism exists within every nook and cranny of U.S. society. I can’t begin to express how angry I feel as I write about racism and other forms of injustice. This anger is not misplaced, and it has its place. You’ve worked as an educator in both youth prisons and public schools. You’ve been able to observe directly how forms of discipline negatively impact girls of color, how they suffer under panoptic surveillance and pathologizing discourses. I can only imagine that they have internalized such racist and pathologizing forms of captivity. How do you find hope in what you do without being seduced by a neoliberal sense of hope that fails or refuses to think critically about systems of racism and pathology? Does anger help?
"For Black and Brown people, our anger is the antithesis of white supremacy and ableism that centralizes docility and compliance masquerading as kindness and civility. I draw from Audre Lorde who wrote about the uses of anger and Brittney Cooper who writes about eloquent rage. Lorde describes the power of our anger when it is focused with precision on the systems that harm us. So, I try to focus my anger on dismantling those systems, like the abolition of youth prisons, and all prisons. I draw from Mariame Kaba who reminds us to practice hope regularly; I practice hope by being in relationship with disabled Black and Brown youth, many of whom are being pushed out of public schools, and/or are currently or formerly incarcerated. I work to support our community as we labor in violent systems. We can create a world that is less violent, more humane, and even joyful. I believe in abolition, so my anger and hope are rooted in the ways I show up, I experiment and fail, and keep showing up to be in community with Black and Brown disabled youth. And those Black and Brown disabled youth are constantly pushing me to be more radical, to develop a clearer abolitionist imaginary. That is hope.
Hope is recognizing how our fights are all connected and cultivating solidarity. The attacks on trans that are so prevalent right now are built on ableism, misogynoir and white supremacy. Therefore, we must be in solidarity with our queer and trans siblings. One study found that 20 percent of youth in detention centers identified as queer and trans: 13 percent of boys and 40 percent of girls. Eighty-five percent of these incarcerated queer and trans girls are girls of color. Trans and queer youth of color often stay longer in family policing systems (known as child welfare) and juvenile incarceration systems, increasing the likelihood of negative impacts of both systems. Queer and trans Black and Brown youth deserve our solidarity and our protection. These same systems are harming Black and Brown disabled kids; our struggles are connected, and liberation means fighting together. Solidarity, the kind where we recognize our common fights and allow our differences in oppressions and experiences to inform our resistance, is what gives me hope.
Also exciting is the work of my contemporary colleagues and earlier career scholars, public intellectuals and activists who are also thinking critically about race and disability while not stopping there, like Jamelia Morgan, Mildred Boveda, Hailey Love, Maggie Beneke, Jenn Phuong, Tami Handy, Adai Teferra, Ericka Weathers, Sami Schalk, Jina B. Kim, Therí Pickens, Liat Ben-Moshe, Kay Ulanday Barrett, Keah Brown, Akiea Gross, D’Arcee Charington Neal, plus a whole host of students who are doing it better than us. They are thinking with less binaries and more interconnected systems. They are more radical and hopeful. And those of us who are developing a sharper analysis because we are listening to them, filling in gaps of our work we missed the first time around. I wanted a theory that centralized the lives of Black and Brown disabled youth, and DisCrit is what grew. DisCrit isn’t the best theory, it’s the one we created when we needed something better. We have always said we want to see it expanded and pushed until its borders break open and something better is born. That’s the beautiful thing about theory, it must continually evolve. As long as we are listening to Audre Lorde and focusing our rage with precision, our theory will evolve to meet us in the moment."

On Cornel West's Method of Expression
[George] Yancy: What shapes your synoptic style of writing? [Cornel] West: Part of it, for me, has to do with a sense of history, which is very important. Anytime you have a sense of history, then you are always talking about the very complex relations of the present to the past and the ways in which futures are embedded in the present. And anytime you talk about history, it usually takes some narrative form, there is some story likeness, and that tends to be easier to follow oftentimes. I think that is probably one factor that shapes my synoptic style of writing. Also, there is a certain kind of openness about one's own self such that people can see that you're being self-critical and they can see how you are complicitous with some of the very things that you talk about. In other words, it's not a matter of simply pointing fingers or calling names, but really showing that you are in the very mess that you are trying to grasp. Moreover, this tends to open people up a little bit. If you're willing to take a risk and become vulnerable, then it tends to open others to take a risk and become vulnerable with regards to listening to what you're saying.

Beatrice Morrow Cannady (January 9, 1890 – August 19, 1974) was a renowned civil rights advocate in early 20th-century Oregon. She was editor of the Advocate, the state's largest African-American newspaper. She was co-founder and vice president of the Portland chapter of the NAACP in 1913, the organization marked the first such branch of the organization formed west of the Mississippi River. She was born in Littig, Texas in 1890. She was the second-oldest daughter of George Morrow and Mary Francis Carter Morrow, farmers who raised their children to value education. She graduated from Wiley College. She married Edward Daniel Cannady (1912-1930). He was the co-founder of The Advocate, one of Portland, first black-owned newspapers. She became associate editor of The Advocate. Her work through the newspaper drew attention to racial violence during the early 1920s and prompted a statement from Governor Ben W. Olcott decrying the actions of the Ku Klux Klan. Acting as the NAACP chapter's secretary, she worked with the group to remove racist, exclusionary language from Oregon's constitution, a mission that succeeded in 1926 and 1927 when the changes were ratified. She led protests against the Ku Klux Klan propaganda film The Birth of a Nation. Her involvement with the Bahá'í Faith can be dated to 1914/1915. She graduated from Northwestern College of Law, making her the first African American woman to graduate from law school in Oregon. She went on to become the first African American woman to practice law in Oregon. She was the first African American woman to run for state representative. She successfully advocated for the passage of civil rights bills by the Oregon state legislature. Her efforts helped integrate public schools in Longview, Washington, and Vernonia, Oregon. She represented Oregon at the 4th annual Pan-African Congress. She had two sons. She married Yancy Jerome Franklin (1931-1936), a typist at The Advocate. She left Oregon and moved to Los Angeles, she married Reuben Taylor. She worked for the Precinct Reporter, a Southern California newspaper that served the African American community. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CnMdQ-7LFsq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wait- Romeo- do any of your ocs have a favorite Markiplier ego. Would they even like markiplier as a concept. Would they hang out with markiplier egos. - Juliet anon
Prob they wouldn't have em as a concept but also ya know it probably wouldn't matter if they did HSVSB
And actually i sorta replied to this sort of question like years ago im sure- but now is been longer so, here's a new updated reply on who would be friends with who:
Gus likes Bing- he's a fun skater dude, he can get just fine. I feel like he'd also like captain mark but mostly bc he thinks he's funny (they wouldn't be friends but gus would respect him) (OH and Illinois, he probably wouldn't be friends but he likes to accompany someone maybe in his adventure just for fun)
Scott's nearest friend could be bim trimmer but it be like "damn this guy is sort of annoying but hey he eats ppl so I'll let it pass" he'd also maybe a weird friend with Wilford where he doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time but hey as long as he points that gun at anyone else he's good (OH AND YANCY HOW COULD I FORGOTTEN ABOUT YANCY- yeah they're sort of friends now too)
Don honestly first thought is Captain Magnum, strong men who r also parent. Congratulations! Uhh Don probably while they think differently i feel like he could have a calm chat with Darkiplier- like i feel like they could play cards for fun
Uhh im putting raymond with maybe yancy but even then ray just wouldn't understand why he would murder anyone but- hey if u need a gang once u get out of jail he's his guy!
And George prob is a bit 🤝 with host, he's not gonna explain why but he likes him.
