Hi hi, I wanted to ask a little question, do you have any tips for someone who is trying to make an au?

Sure ^^

Obviously do something you love. I know that sounds super generic but when you make something and you truely enjoy it it shows through your work. No matter your skill level.

Find that inspiration that sparks so much in your mind that you just have to do it. Be it nature, stories, music, tv, books or even real life events. The world is full of sparks waiting to catch fire.

Make a story you want to read. Make the art you want to see. It doesn’t matter if the stories been told once or a thousand times, yours in unique to you. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

From a technical standpoint, making a AU is a fun experience. Especially if you like world building.

Understanding the world as a whole is one thing, but being able to break it down to as small as the favored snack of the people or the type of offering they give to their patron god is a whole other thing. Every person is different and we all experience people differently.

What I do is have a base story, and them break it down into smaller sections, and them I can drowsy it out as more time goes. Don’t try to do everything at once, go slow, take your time.

Making an au is a labor of love. Trust the process and don’t give up.

Do research, take lots of notes, use sticky notes. Make timelines, make sure to write everything down, even if you think it’s stupid now, it might not be later. I’ve got a book just dedicated to making and writing worlds.

Understand why the characters are doing what they are doing and how it might benefit or harm them in the future. Every character has their own motivation, and that can help or harm others. Cause and effect is really important.

I like to base a lot of my AUs around reality, be it a little manipulated. But for instance Feral is inspired by the forest that surrounds my home, a lot of the places are directly from my backyard, including the wildlife (though we don’t have wolves here, by coyotes). Or Technoid which uses an aerosolized version of piraña solution as a major element. It Thermo which is based off global warming and nuclear winter (surprising difficult to research with out coming across conspiracies). And Under Grand Central is a way of me working through some of my mental health issues.

And most importantly.

People are not alway nice and kind, there are people who will try to push you down. Be cruel and try to hurt you. Just remember that you are more that what you make. People seem to forget that behind our screens there are other people. I’ve had my fair share of people like that. Never let those people push you down. You make what you want. Have fun. Life is to short to be pushed around by someone who at the end of the day doesn’t matter.

You are a person. A unique and special person. And no one can take that away from you.
