Working on my degree proposal and for all I am hard on myself for my (slightly higher than average, but still fairly average) GPA, mostly because I worry about it hurting my chances at grad school, I feel like it still says something that I actually do have straight As in my history of science classes in particular. If nothing else, I'm more than a little proud of myself for that

pro-tip #1: don't go to grad school
pro-tip #2: if you absolutely categorically must go to grad school, i am begging you to write better personal statements. no one cares about your great uncle carl who died of emphysema when you were 2.5 & how that inspired a lifelong crusade to rid the world of lung ailments. i could throw a stick and find someone who had a family member die of cancer when they were young, or whose mother inspired a love of literature, or whose grandad showed them the wonders of nature, or whatever. absolutely none of that shows that you will be capable of graduate level work.
your personal statement is essentially a sales pitch that you are the correct fit for that university, that you will finish your degree in the allotted time, publish in fancy places, and cover them in glory for outreach. you need to demonstrate your research interests are a good fit for a particular advisor (or advisors) and that particular program. (& you need to have those potential advisors on lock ahead of time.) you want to show that you are capable of carrying out & completing independent research. (all of this is looser for a master's degree, and if you don't have the necessary experience, consider getting a master's first.) an opening anecdote is fine, but it should jump into the meat of your experiences & research interests pretty early on. and you need to be SPECIFIC about your research. you don't need to have a proposal for chapter one of your dissertation, but you should have a couple detailed research questions that could turn into papers.
you can also use your personal statement to address deficiencies in your gpa/gre/etc, or you can talk one of your letter writers into covering that topic if possible. if you've been out of school for a while, you need to demonstrate that you are ready to be in an academic mindset.
i have read so many bad application essays while sitting on admissions committees, please have mercy on me.

y'know how they say an academic writing sample can be something like an undergrad thesis or journal article? but if a journal article has many authors, how do they know which part you contributed to? or do they just want the part of the article you wrote for the sample? sadly i don't have the option to do an undergrad thesis, so i won't have something that was purely/mostly my own to give...

If you need me I will be wandering off into the swamp never to be heard from again. Occasionally on warm nights I will be heard mumbling in the forest about soft matter physics.
