The Complexity of Motherhood
The Complexity of Motherhood By Leah Ongiri
Tumblr media
On Mother’s Day, let us mark how beautiful and complex it can be to mother and be mothered: To those who have mothered, we thank you. To those who rejoice in the work, the role, the presence of mothering and mothers, we celebrate with you. To those who are in the thick of parenting children of any age, we appreciate you. To those who experience loss through infertility, abortion, miscarriage, adoption or running away, we mourn with you. To those who have lost their mothers, we grieve with you. To those who have endured abuse at the hands of their mothers, we acknowledge you. To those who experience pain at the marking of this day, we witness you. To those who are single moms, grandmoms, stepmoms, foster moms, adoptive moms, mentor moms and spiritual moms, we need you. And to those who are pregnant with new life, both expected and surprising, we anticipate with you. May we reflect with gratitude on the wide spectrum of mothering that happens in our lives and in our communities.

There are days
where
I would prefer to die
where
the pain is almost deadly
(but never it is).
Today
I would prefer to die.
My heart
aches
as never before
and I have a kind of certainty
that the only cure could be you
(but you are not here anymore).

(Esp) Sin abuelas no hay paraiso. Queda con tus colegas, saca tu silla, la calle es de quien la habita.
(Eng) Without grandmothers there is no paradise. Stay with your colleagues, take your chair (to the street), the street belongs to those who inhabit it.

Goodbyes are painful...
She was a cool & fun woman. But due to the responsibilities imposed on her shoulders even before she could show her cool self out to the world, she was married and had to kids and then she got so busy with kids that she forgot that she had a life of her own.
Due to her motherly actions, people around also didn't realised that she needed a break and had to live for herself. She spent her whole life caring about others and feeding others before herself but inspite of all this, the only thing that she couldn't earn was respect. She was so good towards others that people took her emotions and her actions for granted.
Once her kids got married and had their own kids, she might have thought that she might find her happiness and respect from her grandkids. Well, she was right about it but unfortunately not for long. Once the grandkids started growing up in a different kind of lifestyle, they felt that old woman is too old and uncool for them; when in reality she was way more cooler than the kids' parents.
It's all because of the way she grew up and the things her parents taught her- to think about her husband, kids and in laws before herself and dedicate her entire life in selflessly taking care of them without thinking about herself; she had to hide her ownself in order to be a good wife, a good mother, a good daughter in law and a good grandmother.
In the process of taking care of others, she got so attached to the people who came along and loved all of them unconditionally that she totally forgot that there might be a life without them. She had spent so much of her life taking care of others that she never really knew how to live when no one's there and it's only her in her little world.
When it actually happened, when people started getting detached from her, she felt lost. She was clueless of what to do. That cool and fun woman actually started growing old. But the sad part was even after she dedicated her entire life thinking about others and selflessly taking care of others, there was no one around when she needed a shoulder to lean on.
She lost hope of living anymore in this world. But her luck was so bad that rather than setting her soul free from this stressful life, god turned out to be the demon. He showed no mercy and just caused her more pain. He started taking her memory away from her.
All the people she cared for her were being vanished from her memory. In a way it was also good because atleast she won't remember anything and anyone and she won't regret taking care of the people who turned out to be traitors.
But it's sad to see her go through so heartbreaking to see her go through so much pain and see her struggle to do the basic things. I hope she's granted a painless death and she's set free from the pain the cruel world caused her.
If I want to wish anything for her then I'd probably wish her that in whatever family she is born in her next life; I just hope she has a peaceful life and gets all the love and respect she deserved which this world couldn't provide her and I hope she finally show the world her cool & fun self. Her innocence and pure soul was too good for this cruel and selfish world.

HAPPY
The truth is, I'm happy with my life. I'm happy being alone and I've overcome everything in the past. I think my grandmother's death made me more dependent. I would have always liked to have a partner at that time who would support me like no one else could. Aside from that, I'm surrounded by wonderful people, even my last two exes are now my friends. I really appreciate it, they know me well and I have a special affection for them. They are people I can always talk to about anything. Just like my friends who suffer if things go wrong for me, they try to do everything possible to make me feel better. I think I'm very happy.

Well Done:
When my grandma insisted on me pronouncing religious words while giving me money as if for this pious behaviour, I resisted the temptation of money and simply congratulated her on the holiday. I was amicable and stern at the same time.
Even the farther condemn, shame and lecturing on how to be a righteous Russian orthodox hasn’t left any sense of guilt or shame. It made me sad to see how rigid belief made her so brittle that she gives me the power over her own emotions. I feel pity but still I don’t have to bend over and stop being myself. Too many times in childhood I was subdued to losing myself for their comfort. I have a right to be myself!
To better:
I couldn’t bring myself to properly talk out this situation with mom. She went in full silent treatment mode. It made uneasy, but still I worried more about being open.
Delights:
Coffee and watching “The Office” with mom in the morning.
Some episodes of “The Good Fight”
At the grandma’s I found Remarque’s books, got excited, asked mom if she read them and then she told me that this only bit I liked in grandma’s apartment was my dad’s purchase no one read. It is not so, but it felt like he bought them for me 😭 I was so touched.

I'm aware about grief isn't linear. But I would wish that doesn't hit like this. I would like that pain would had a warning sign before just punch me on face.
