Meet Ruba!

One of the characters I've been thinking about a lot lately is named Ruba, she's my second proper OC with a fleshed out story and personality! She's been a Gun-slinging Bounty Hunter for the past ~20 years since she turned 16, during her rebellious phase, as she didn't want to pick up her Father's Druidic teachings. She taught herself, instead, how to make her own firearms in a homemade workshop when she had spare time. She still owns her first Revolver and Rifle she made, albeit they get modified often. She's snarky and sarcastic, and has made quite a living for herself. She was raised in poverty, and essentially fought her way out tooth and nail to buy a house in the rich district of her hometown for her parents, and now her partner.

I suppose we'll live it at this for now... This is basically her backstory from before the campaign begun! It's one hell of a campaign, and still ongoing (with a hiatus), so there's lots to tell!

Behind the Scenes :)

She was made when I was in high school, during a sick phase of liking Steampunk & Girls dressed in Suits :) I need to redesign her when I learn how to draw, I've got beautiful art from some of my friends as gifts, but they don't exactly encapsulate all of her... outstanding features as I'd always imagined them to be. Nothing too fancy at all, but just that her facemask is made of metal and gears, and could turn into a fox mask inspired by the Japanese Kitsune masks. She's also got one fantasy-magical prosthetic arm that she got from her Arch Nemesis, One Eyed Jack... who the party promptly killed on their first interaction, even though he was supposed to run away and be a recurring villain :)

I love her loads, I have always wished I could roleplay her better in game, but I'm not great at playing characters too dissimilar to myself in personality, and I'm hardly as sarcastic, rude and quick-witted as she. Also her pronouns are she/him :)

Potion Permit isn't flawless (whyyyyyyy does this small town of like 15 need three cops?) but I'm liking it!

A little disappointed the whole incident that causes the town's distrust of chemists was an oopsie daisy that's quickly resolved. I dunno. Seemed a perfect set up for a whole, "the capital didn't give a fuck and you need to learn to distrust the state and work with rural customs while 'science isn't bad, greed is' is learned by the locals."

But I suppose if that was the plot we wouldn't have THREE fucking cops.

Still, if you like grindy games, it has a pretty solid gameplay loop. The character designs are diverse and pretty good! Aside from Rue, who I think could have been made older.

That said, the writing has a lot of poteeeential, but given what other folks here have mentioned, it doesn't go as far as it could.

basically, he gets re-alive'd a few years later with no recollection of anything- all he knows is where he woke up at felt like home, and that something deeply important to him was missing. a kasugi crow was flying overhead and he was like 'fuck it. might as well follow it' and ended up interrupting a hashira meeting :)

so, about a week ago, I participated on a sort of OC takeover on twitter. essentially, rp as your OC as if they're literally using twitter.

A tabloid device—a laptop—manifests in nothingness itself. Time passes, until a large, bloodstained paw draws near. It seems that oblivion has a sole resident, whose form disintegrates into mist, revealing a tall, disheveled figure looming over the laptop. She retrieves the object, wandering off to whatever an "elsewhere" is to the embodiment of "nowhere." All the while, an ominous presence observes her.

The figure, Yuánshǔ, is a fox spirit turned obsolete. Using the laptop's web-camera, she takes a photo and introduces herself to the website known as "Twitter." Unfortunately, her bloodied, disheveled appearance is her primary form in this abyss. Oddly, she cannot muster the energy to shapeshift or use illusions in order to appear tidy. At this point, the fox spirit knows that she is being watched.

Unfortunately, social media doesn't hold her interest for long. One would think that after being alone for so long, she would leap at the chance to finally connect with someone, regardless of whether they were from her native world or not. Not her, it seems. Perhaps she was too tired. She decides revert to her original form and returns to dormancy, hoping to never awaken ever again. But, like always, her wish was never heard. At some point, she suddenly snaps awake, finally catching a glimpse of the ominous presence stalking her. Whether she got to confront them is unknown. It's hard to tell if she's even mad.

The entity observing Yuánshǔ never showed herself. No name was explicitly said by her, and she only revealed bits and pieces about herself and her motives. All that is known is that she is a mage living on as a spirit, and that she dreams of a world of no limits. The only physical evidence of this spectre is her own staff of gnarly wood, its branches resembling talons grasping the breathtaking, yet foreboding eclipse.

Before the phantom mage took her leave, she decided to reveal a glimpse into the sleeping Yuánshǔ's mind. It's noted that the fox spirit rarely dreamt; when she did, it often resembled her memories. Although the original memory took place in her room, the dream took place in a haze instead. The only things that she could recognize were her own body, the couch, and someone sleeping soundly on her lap. Someone very, very dear to her. Eventually, she found herself slowly draping one of her many tails over them. The way the young one's eyes curved up and crinkled its corners filled Yuánshǔ with a warmth she cannot describe.

content warning / note: the last image depicts a dead kid. not terribly graphic—you might not even find it particularly uncomfortable to look at—but I'm doing this just in case.

The dream faded into the abyss, re-emerging after some time. The room she sat in seemed almost as dark as oblivion, and she could barely acknowledge the form of the sofa, the room, or even her own body. She could only focus on the cold, battered corpse of her child.
