Want to build your own Piano Coat Rack?

I put together some plans for the Piano Coat Rack so that if anyone else wants to try to make one they have a starting point. I ended up putting them on itch.io for free since tumblr doesn't really like PDFs or zip files. The plans are free for non-commercial use. I also have a section describing some of the process to hopefully make it fairly easy to replicate.

I put these plans together in FreeCad, so along with a PDF version of the technical drawings there are also full 3D models that you can use to get a better understanding of how it goes together. If you notice any oddities or mistakes or have any question please just me up!

Also if you make one please tag me, I would love to see it!

Another workbench drawer fitted out. It’s incredible how many tools you can fit into a relatively small space. I had a very large tool cabinet that was pretty much filled over the past 20 years….thinning down the herd, putting the “go-to” tools at arms reach. It’s been a fun process and will hopefully inspire you to do something similar in your own work space. Maybe not n workbench drawers, but tool cabinets, cheers or wall shelves. Cooking spoon in spalted birch, with some simple chip carving in the handle.

This gorgeous coloration of decaying wood caused by various fungi is called spalting, and even though it structurally weakens a piece of wood, one can still make strong and usable objects out of it.

I love working with spalted wood because of all the surprises it holds in itself, which are slowly getting revealed to me with each cut I take. It is so easy to get lost in the process and so hard to know when to stop and call it done. I love it.

Put together a simple box to act as gift wrap for the piano coatrack. I had tried making a cardboard box but that felt like it was too simple. Also as this is a wedding gift I'm thinking they could use this as a memories box and stamped their names on the top after I took my pictures. This was made in an evening with some random pine boards, nails, and a bit of hide glue.

There’s something very satisfying about having your most used hand tools at arms reach. Safely stored, ready to work. This week I’ve been fitting out the drawers in my workbench, French fitting planes and building sliding trays that will hold chisels, spokeshaves and rasps. First post here! Welcome to this wood carving and wood loving journey of mine. We’re gonna start in medias res.

This week I’ve tried to make some wooden jewelry, or wooden bangles to be more precise. I mostly carve spoons and kitchen utensils so trying out new forms like this is a nice surprise for my skills and imagination every once in a while.

These are now roughly shaped and put away to dry. Once they’ve been dried they’re ready for final shaping and finishing cuts with a very sharp blade. I love the patterns of spalting in this particular piece of birch I’ve worked with. It makes for a lovely contrast between light and dark areas and adds some texture and depth.
