stop forcing queer people to be charitable to bigots just because they're religious and media stop perpetuating it challenge 2x23

Disney+ has a documentary series on the AFLW and one of the episodes was on pride round. As a queer person who grew up playing a ton of sport (including AFL), I was intrigued and watched it.

A lot of the episode was focused on Haneen Zreika refusing to participate in pride round because apparently wearing rainbow footy clothes is against her religion and how charitable the rest of the team (including members who identify as LGBTQ+) were expected to be towards her. There was no focus on how the LGBTQ+ members of the team felt about having someone refuse to show support for them. It was all basically Haneen Zreika saying "yeah I'll be nice to the girls but I'm not wearing anything rainbow" and complaining that she felt "excluded" (even though she chose to exclude herself).

I'm now rewatching Glee and I'm up to the episode with the God Squad. In the episode, Santana and Brittany are told that their very tame (in comparison to their straight friends, who suck face any time any place with apparently no dissent except from Santana and I guess Principal Figgins) PDAs have been the subject of complaints. Their principal basically tells them to sit down, shut up and suck it up because the complaints were made on religious grounds. It's Valentines Day, so Santana pays the God Squad to give her girlfriend a singing Valentine - and why wouldn't they? Three out of the four of them are her friends, right ... oh wait, there's a new person in the group, and he's a Christian. And to Mercedes' credit, she does bring up that she doesn't want to hurt Santana's feelings. But the conversation is centred around the comfort level of a potentially homophobic person who happens to be religious, as opposed to Sam, Mercedes and Quinn doing something nice for their friends, one of whom was very recently publicly outed and disowned by her religious grandmother.

(and yes, the Christian dude ended up not being homophobic, but it would have been a far better message if the three non-homophobic people in the group had already agreed to give Brittany the singing Valentine then to make Santana sweat it out for days over whether or not her friends value her more than the comfort level of a potential homophobe just because he happens to share their religious beliefs)

TL/DR: queer people shouldn't have to be charitable to people who use religion as a shield to be anti-LGBTQ+
