[“What I didn’t understand until much later in life was that boys changed their behaviour around me, because they could not sexualise me and that was confusing to them. To be fair, I had the same problem with them. I could not sexualise them even though I knew, as a girl, I was supposed to. But if you are a man, don’t be dispirited. If you manage to make me laugh, and many of you have, at least you know you did it on merit alone.
Once I figured out that the reason I found girls to be much funnier than boys was because I much preferred their company, I realised that I had lots and lots of feelings about girls. And, although it didn’t necessarily lead to erratic behaviour, it was very disorientating. So perhaps what I was feeling was the same thing girls felt around boys. The thought process was as simple as that, and no sooner had I stacked these ideas on top of each other than they clicked very satisfactorily into what I understood as truth. I was gay. It really did dawn on me as matter-of-factly as that. I don’t remember where I was or what I was doing, but I remember the sequence of thoughts very clearly.
And as soon as I had the thoughts, I tried to un-have them. I really did not want to be a paedophile. They sounded like terrible people. Fortunately, my river of ignorance still ran quite deep, so I was able to completely repress my sexuality without too much effort. All I had to do was stop actively participating in life. Thankfully, despite my lack of ladylike qualities, it didn’t take me long to work out that in order to be a “lady” in the world of teenage girl golfing, all I had to do was not be a “slut.” So, given that I was shy, deeply closeted, fat, had selective mutism and undiagnosed autism, I was never going to be caught straying very far from “appropriate” behaviour.”]

To be rendered powerless does not destroy your humanity. Your resilience is your humanity. The only people who lose their humanity are those who believe they have the right to render another human being powerless. They are the weak. To yield and not break, that is incredible strength.

“I always thought I couldn’t sort my life out like a normal person because I was depressed and anxious. But it turns out I was depressed and anxious because I couldn’t sort my life out like a normal person, because I was not a normal person, and I didn’t know it.
“Now, this is not to say I still don’t struggle. Every day is a bit of a struggle, to be honest. But at least now I know what my struggle is, and getting to the starting line of normal is not it.”

No one can fault the Brooklyn Museum’s It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby for attempting to showcase a narrative of Picasso’s legacy that centers feminist artists, but the exhibition has rightly drawn criticism for its lack of critical engagement with the aesthetic contributions of the women artists it brandishes and their tenuous links with Pablo Picasso’s corpus.
But what would a truly critical Picasso exhibition look like?
Using the exhibition as a point of departure, scholar Donna Honarpisheh offers a list of artists whose works are directly linked to Picasso and offer perspectives that are marginalized in the Euro-American art historical canon.

Y'all absolutely need to watch Hannah Gadsby: Something Special. The absolute funniest show I've watched in ages, and it perfectly fits and celebrates the queer and autistic niche. Cannot recommend enough!
Their other specials Nanette and Douglas are amazing too, but Nanette also has some intense moments that you should check the content warnings for. But Something Special is all feel-good joy and perfect for pride month :))

We need to stop romanticising mental illness as a pathway to artistic greatness. Mental illness is not a romance—a ticket to genius—it is excruciatingly isolating. It is a ticket to fucking nowhere.

Vincent van Gough is such a poster boy for "ooooh he was a tortured artist, saw the beauty through his pain" but it's SO TRUE. he suffered JUST LIKE ME but because he was LOVED and BELIEVED IN HIMSELF, he was still able to make ART and i get to SEE IT and love him SO much, I believe in him too. i am supporting him from the future, proving that broken people can make happiness because we're people like everyone else, i'm just a little more motivated to find a reason to live

Opening on June 2… It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby.
Fifty years have passed since the death of artist and cultural icon, Pablo Picasso. He’s a mainstay of the modernist art historical canon and a household name whose artwork sells for record prices, but what does his legacy look like in 2023 through a contemporary lens? A critical lens? A feminist lens?
Using their incisive humor, comedian Hannah Gadsby worked with our curators, Lisa Small and Catherine Morris, to consider Picasso’s work through the aforementioned lenses in It’s Pablo-matic. The exhibition includes nearly 100 works including pieces by Picasso and selections by twentieth- and twenty-first-century feminist artists such as Dindga McCannon, Betty Tompkins, and Kaleta Doolin. Highlighting Gadsby’s voice alongside those of many of the included artists, the exhibition reckons with complex questions around misogyny, creativity, the art-historical canon, and who gets to be a “genius.”
