Harry Smith - Sing Out! on WBAI with Barbara Dane & Irwin Silber, April 1965

A feisty / folky hour of radio from way back in 1965. I've been immersed in the Harry Smith universe for a couple months now, thanks to John Szwed's remarkable bio Cosmic Scholar, which I followed up quickly with Paolo Igliori's American Magus. Obviously, Smith is fascinating character — and the Anthology of American Folk Music is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Anthology, however, is the main topic of discussion on the Sing Out! show, which Harry seems bemused/amused by; he had put the whole thing together well over a decade before and had definitely moved on to other things. But Smith must've been pleased that as the 1960s kicked into high gear, his collection of oddball vernacular folk was proving to be deeply influential.

While listening to Harry spar (playfully, mostly) with Irwin and Barbara here, I kept trying to think who his voice reminded me of — and then I realized ... it was a guy who knew the Anthology backwards and forwards: Jerry Garcia.

Born on August 21, 1951, Harry Smith is an American television journalist working for NBC News, MSNBC, and CNBC as a senior correspondent. He hosted the CBS News morning programs, The Early Show and its predecessor, CBS This Morning, for seventeen years. In July 2011, Smith left CBS News to become a correspondent for NBC News and the newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams. He has also served as an anchor for MSNBC, conducting daytime live coverage of breaking news and events since first appearing in November 2015.

The Pancakes Family - Bob's Birthday

It's Bob's birthday, and the family are celebrating with bowling. Once upon a time, Bob used to be a great bowler.

Iggy is all legs, Zola takes to it like she was born with a bowling ball in her hand (ouch, poor Eliza).

And Eliza.... Well, she hates anything she can't be the best at.

Bob ran into Harry, who was practicing with his bowling club, the Great Balls of Fire.

Harry: Sure, we'd love you to join us Bob. Honestly, I'm carrying this team at the moment, we need someone with a little experience.

Much later, because it takes 6 hrs to play 3 rounds, Bob finally ages up to an adult. And as he blew out the candles, he wished for a new addition to their family of 4.
