Ineffable Touch AU
I have shared my AU idea a couple of times and every time I had gotten a good reaction from people, so I thought I would share it here and seen if anyone likes it in case they run into it.
It all came to me when thinking back on how Crowley walking into consecrated ground burned, and how Holy Water affects demons. My mind started wondering what reaction would hellish stuff have on Angels, such as Aziraphale, and that’s when everything started to get a bit fucked up.
So in the early stages of this AU development I had decided that if, for example, Holy Water happened to fall on your hand (you as a Demon) it’s not like it was death for certain, but it acted like the most corrosive product to ever exist, it would just corrode to bone and continue spreading up the arm until it got to the important parts, aka internal organs and, of course, soul. So the only way to avoid it would be to chop off the infected bit, and you’d have to be rather quick about it.
So that’s on the Holy Water, now what does Hellfire do? We never really got to see it in action, so it gives me more room to wonder and you know, I feel like there would be some type of dynamic? I honestly feel like Hellfire would be way worse than Holy Water. Why this reasoning for the fact that Demons are the “bad folk”, so you know, even though Holy Water is extremely painful, it is over in less than a minute, now Hellfire. You could burn for days, it would kill your soul slowly, an Angel condemned for such a fate is a very dreadful situation, it would be worse than the outcome of a Demon, so it festers, and you die slowly, and excruciatingly.
With this in mind lets go back to the consecrated grounds example: Whereas Crowley would feel a burning sensation, if Aziraphale came into contact with hellish stuff, he wouldn’t entirely realize it. It would contaminate him in the same way a disease does, in short, it would fester, and if he doesn’t notice, it would get really bad until he realized what was causing it.
Developing further into that is the crucial part of whatever this is trying to be in my head. You see, Aziraphale is an Angel, Crowley is a Demon, but they have been interacting with each other in human vessels. Apart from that scene in the garden of Eden where Aziraphale puts his wing over Crowley, they never really touch each other at any point where they are not in human vessels. So the reason why they don’t have a very explicit reaction to the opposition (like Holy water and Hellfire) is because the human vessels would act as a shield. If you go back, when they are going to war, they are going to use human vessels, so it makes me wonder that not even them are fully aware on how dangerous interacting with each other in their true forms with no type of vessel would actually be, it’s just standard procedure.
So getting to the heart of the AU, Aziraphale and Crowley get closer, and closer, and even closer, and at first, everything is great, and they couldn’t be happier. But then weird things start to happen. They have touched more in those last couple of months than they have for their entire lives, Crowley stars to low-key burn everywhere, at first he doesn’t make much of it, but it slowly starts getting unbearable; everywhere Aziraphale touches just burns. Aziraphale doesn’t seem to feel anything, until he just starts getting what would resemble a fever, and delirium, and he just starts going crazy in a way. It hurts, but not in the same way as Crowley, it’s not physical, it’s something else, he is tired, he is sick, and he start losing his vision, because it’s festering his soul.
Crowley and Aziraphale have been ‘fraternizing’ for 6000 years and in that time they never noticed that they were dangerous to each other. So in light of that fact I do believe it has to take a few months for the symptoms to start showing up, and these months they have to be touching a lot. So if they still take a bit longer to let down their walls after the almostpocalypse, it’s going to take even longer. But this doesn’t necessarily mean they know what’s causing those symptoms.
Crowley is definitely the one who realizes first, because his symptoms come quicker and are pretty easy to detect, now if he figures out in a couple of weeks or months depends on how much in denial he is about it, and something tells me he would be in denial. The thing is, when the symptoms start on Crowley, it’s very faint. I imagine it would be like when you are lying down to take a sunbath but you forget to put sunscreen on, and it slowly starts getting very hot over your skin and burning, the difference is that it would be where Aziraphale touched. And at first it wouldn’t be right after Aziraphale touched him, it would be like a flare up if that makes sense, like, they have been touching for months and Crowley slowly starts to realize that like, his skin on his chest feels kinda sore and he hasn’t got any idea why. Because like I said, the human vessels work like a type of shield, so what does it is not the casual touching, it’s the prolonged one, the emotional one, the one where they are pouring their souls out to each other, so it happens slowly.
Aziraphale might realize that his very soul is falling ill because I imagine Angels and Demons don’t get sick, but like with Crowley, depending on how much denial he has, he won’t know why. And because on Aziraphale it eats and festers at his core, I do believe he starts descending into madness even before they realize what is happening. The thing is, if one of them is going to click on what is happening it’s going to be Crowley, because both of them won’t even think of it at the beginning as an option because they are finally happy, and Aziraphale’s symptoms are very hard to tie to the cause, so it will have to be Crowley figuring it out.
