When he returns home he’s warned of never returning to the horizon woods for a beast called a nightingale will devour his heart. He finds this utter poppycock and keeps going back and learning about the woods and it’s inhabitants while becoming invested in the witch. he learns the truth when he locates a caged bird deep inside that has a bleeding red heart and the witch gets a bit more violent than he’s ever seen. Marigold tells her that the bird is her teacher’s heart that was wounded and the longer her teacher remains a monster, the harder it’ll be to heal.

While it’s important to be unapologetic of who you are, it’s more important to protect yourself- this doesn’t make you wrong, but the people who make you feel wrong wrong.

deertail was the second cat i drew on here and i love him. he’s wanted to be a medicine cat since he was a kit so he never even attempted to be a warrior. he’s pretty soft-spoken and a little bit awkward, so he comes off as shy, but he’s rly friendly and chill and willing to spend time with just about anyone. he’s also Very Small and he’s basically useless at fighting, he can’t even manage the bare minimum of self defense that he was taught as an apprentice. so he can be pretty jumpy and nervous and prefers not to leave camp alone, even just to gather herbs n stuff. that’s where his apprentice comes in handy!! (jokes on you now its time to talk about other cats too because you got me STARTED)

lynxpaw is pretty young but has the enthusiasm and passion of A THOUSAND SUNS. she and deertail aren’t related, and i guess the concept of older/younger sibling dynamics don’t apply to cats because they’re born in litters, but that’s what their relationship is like. she annoys the everloving fuck out of him and he teases her a lot but they’re very fond of each other. a lot of the other cats in the clan don’t “get it” but it works for them anyway. she got a little extra battle training from some warriors that medicine cat apprentices wouldn’t normally get, because in an emergency self-defense situation she would probably need to fight for the both of them. she gives him a lot of shit about protecting him.

also probably none of the cats in my clan are straight, and it’s not something i thought super hard about for most of them but deertail is definitely gay and he’s like, the cat equivalent of a twink. he has a lowkey crush on owlfeather... he’s the one with the weird eye (i was thinking cataracts or something when i was drawing him, not any kind of Cool Battle Injury, but he’s not actually that old and it doesnt really matter tbh). when he started losing his vision in one eye deertail was trying to help and they got pretty close. owlfeather is half-retired now and is kind of considered an “elder” even though he’s relatively young, so he’s not expected to do a lot of warrior duties and they spend a lot of time together.

also i was thinking that he was born w/o a tail and there’s no cool story behind that but i dont know, maybe he deserves a fun story about losing it
