Coming soon: a lovely stone #herbspiral. We just need a bit more soil to fill up the beds and in the herbs go. (Soil held up by stones arranged in a spiral with pit of herbs stacked on top) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-vq17PAgDz/?igshid=18elp0qfs4iuh

Here is the herb garden detail for a permaculture design I helped a student create in the Women's Permaculture Guild online Permaculture Design Course. It is called patch mapping when we take a small area of a design, blow it up, and fill in the details. This type of mapping can be particularly helpful for large properties or small areas that need to be designed and viewed in depth. I teach my students how to create maps like this in the course, and I create designs like this for my clients. Want to know more about becoming my student or having me design an herb garden like this for you? Herb Spiral and row crop design for a permaculture farm in Barbados. This design is still in the works, but we think it's shaping up to be an incredible project! This has been an amazing opportunity to expand our knowledge about edible, medicinal, nitrogen fixing, erosion reducing, native, and pollinator friendly plants in the Caribbean. I hope to use this acquired knowledge to help others working and farming in tropical areas of the world! More info on this project coming soon. Stay posted! . . . . . #permaculturedesign #permaculture #permaculturewomen #herbspiral #permaculturefarm #permacultureplants #permaculturedesigner #3ddesign #permacultureillustrator #permacultureproject #tropicalgarden #virtualdesign #farmdesign #growyourown #edibleplants #herbgarden #herbgardens #herbgardenlove #designideas #landscapedesignideas #herbgardening #onlinelandscapedesigns #growfood #pollinator #nativeplants #nitrogenfixer #ediblegarden #ediblelandscape #edibleflowers https://www.instagram.com/p/B1d5mYDDg3z/?igshid=14hut52cl78j1

This weekend I’ve done a lot of work in my garden. One of the main projects is my herb spiral. The first picture below is the sample that I was going by.
This is a work in progress. I would have made it larger, but I ran out of bricks. Except for a few transplants from my raised beds (bee balm and yellow wood sorrel), everything is from seeds.

The seeds that I planted in the spiral are Alaskan mixed colors nasturtium, Dukat dill, pollinator herb mixture, large leaf Italian basil, plain Italian parsley, long island mammoth dill, garden sorrel, summer savory, Calendula Officinalis pacific beauty blend, dreadlocks amaranth, other of thyme and common sage. The pictures are below.

Bed 2 & 3:
I built an arched trellis between beds 2 and three for the squash plants to grow up from bed 2. Currently, I have used fence stakes and plastic chicken fencing/bird netting and PVC tubing. This is also a work in progress when I can get some cattle panels, I will replace the netting. Eventually, all of the beds will be getting these trellis arches.
Bed 4:
I also planted various squash including acorn, butternut, Hubbard.
Bed 5:
Cantaloupes; and various onions.
I dug up a mulberry from my dwarf tree area as it’s not doing well, put it in a pot and planted a new elderberry plant that I bought last month. I just need to trellis it.
I potted 4 each of avocado pits, comfrey roots and paw-paw seeds.
New Plants
As soon as I prepare the location, I will seed some new plants. I’ve never grown these and don’t know if we’ll like them or how well they will grow here in South Carolina.
My new experiments are:
Malabar Spinach (Basella Rubra), is a perennial vine with fleshy leaves with berries.

Mouse Melon aka Mexican Sour Gherkin, and Cucamelon. It is a vine grown for its edible fruit. Fruits are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a tinge of sourness. I have a few seed packets for this plant.
