hello tumblr I’m a frog scientist and I heard you like frogs here so I’m here to share frog content if that’s okay
my first contribution is to inform you all that Carl Linnaeus hated frogs. Like, really hated them:
"These foul and loathsome animals are abhorrent because of their cold body, pale color, cartilaginous skeleton, filthy skin, fierce aspect, calculating eye, offensive smell, harsh voice, squalid habitation, and terrible venom; and so their Creator has not exerted his powers to make more of them." - Carl Linnaeus, Systema Naturae 1758 (Translated from Latin)
idk what went down between Linnaeus and a frog but dude was traumatised
also here is a photo of one of my science frogs, his name is Granny
I want to clarify I don't mean that it looks like it in terms of "it looks like you're aping it" or anything like that, but your art gives off intense vibes similar to Moebius' work. Just the way it's kind of instantly recognizable. And how you somehow convey soooo much form and shape and weight with what seems like the absolute bare minimum amount of light and shading necessary. Hmm you said to send you asks. What's your favorite animal?
Thank you for the kind words!!
Favorite animal is hard- it's a question where my answer drifts a lot over time and if you asked me again a year from now I might say something completely different.
I really like salamanders in general. They're very pretty and they just like to hang out under logs and rocks. Red-backed Salamanders are pretty common where I live and this drawing is based off a photo of one that I took (although the colors are waaaaay off, I was a little rusty with the markers).
Growing up in heavily suburbanized central New Jersey I don't get to see a whole lot of wild megafauna with two exceptions: deer and herons. The Great Blue Heron is a fairly common sight along the Raritan River and its tributaries. I think because there are so few other large animals around, especially birds, it still feels like a treat to see one flying around or wading in the water. They're big and elegant and beautiful.
I've always thought horseshoe crabs are really cool. They bring a real "Cambrian Explosion" vibe to the beach that would be very lacking otherwise.
Anyway, I guess the theme here is "animals that feel out of place in New Jersey but live here nonetheless."
I saw this anole today and it made me feel real happy to be alive on this same earth at this same time where I can see such small lil creatures living their lil lifes. 🥲🥹
