A firestorm starting on Twitter about the reports that West Virginia University (a major R1 university on the east coast) will be cutting programs— including the entire World Languages program. You wouldn’t even be able to take a Spanish class at WVU.
The president Gordon Gee is not liked, and has a bad reputation when it comes to leading universities. I really hope this doesn’t come to fruition, but it paints a bleak picture for the humanities + higher ed in general

Today is day four of the strike at American University. We have still not heard a word from the administration, and it looks like they are trying to hold firm until the end of the strike. The union is already talking about extending into next week.
We've made good on our promise to not go down without a fight, but I'm tired.
I'm burnt out.
And I know others are too, because it really feels like this is just beginning.
If you would like to help support AU Staff members who have gone over a year without a contract, check out the AU staff union linktree. There's a go fund me for the strike fund, which helps pay for food, sunscreen, water, and other supplies as well as $50 a day of strike pay for affected workers.
While $50 is more than nothing, it isn't exactly all that I'm losing. So if you'd like to help me specifically, you can drop me a couple bucks to my PayPal here. Every little bit helps.
Sylvia Burwell, AUs president, makes more than my annual salary every two weeks. In one of the most expensive cities in America, most staff can barely afford to live near the university and commute from far just to come to work. Inflation is high, and the university denied us our raises this year as a union busting tactic, to force us to settle a contract, while the rest of the university all got a bump.
The AUs slogan is Change Can't Wait -- so why should we?

Really wondering if postsecondary education mainly serves the needs of industry by freeing employers of the need to invest in the fundamental training of workers whose job skills come prepackaged so as to make them more readily fungible. It does this while also incentivizing employee compliance with entry level requirements for behaviour, hours, and remuneration because we know how disposable and financially insecure we are.

quick personal/school update:
Y'all. I've officially formed my Dissertation Committee (with some absolute rock stars) AND I just sent my chair the draft of my first 3 chapters (the dissertation proposal)!!!
With any luck, I'll be a doctoral candidate in just over a month!
I still have tons to continue working on in the meantime, but I had to share the good news with someone. :)

[edit] The more the Democrats in the state enhance rights and the fundaments of well-being as with the above legislation, the more the Republicans are forced into an untenable politics of ‘no’.
No, you shouldn’t have affordable education.  No, you shouldn’t be free to choose what to do about a pregnancy.  No, if you’re LGBT you shouldn’t have equal rights.  No, the state shouldn’t stop the mining companies from polluting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.  Etc.
The more the Dems push ahead on these and other issues, the higher the malignant social harm of the right is brought into relief.
How the Republicans escape this straightjacket at the national level is well known: whip up campaigns born of misinformation and bigotry and a few Bible-pounding moral panics, and the Republican base will cheer you on as you cut their Social Security, dirty their air, and cut taxes for the rich.
Political campaigns that appeal to ignorance seem to have duller teeth in MN than elsewhere.  Whatever the case, we should be grateful that legislators here are mostly moving ahead without hindrance from the QAnon, Jesus hates drag queens, Trump won in 2020, scary black people live in Minneapolis crowd.

"The Last Walk"
The latest in my digital self-portraits and landscape series’. It depicts me walking in my doctoral regalia in the day of commencement. The walk (and plants/building in the background) was a familiar and wheelchair accessible route from the nearest parking garage to my office/classroom building.

This essay has me hooting and hollering. It’s so sad that students who are passionate and talented in the humanities are being failed by colleges that are being scrapped and sold for parts by administrators.

Y'allllllllllllll. I've submitted my doctoral portfolio for dissertation chair matching! In 6 weeks, I'll know who my dissertation chair is and in 8 weeks, my research kicks into high gear!
I kinda can't believe this milestone is already here. For a multitude of reasons. Alas, I have a new course starting up today, so I don't have time to dwell
