I know I only got and read Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir cuz a few people I follow were raving about the book, but that was genuinely one of the most fun stories I’ve read in a long while, even if I was sort of confused with the names of all the people in the first third of the novel.

Honestly, genuinely fun read. The main character’s voice is strong, the place and magics are well-established and feel good, and the harrowing nature of the problems and mysteries they encounter are balanced really well with the interpersonal drama.

Good stuff, recommended.

so here's the sequence;

daytime, some future that's literally now but with this new tech biker rides up alongside a tesla, gets in front of them. crackly static over the helmet intercom "alright, clear" and a device pops out of the back fender of the motorcycle. it's just two little semi-curved lights, like mini-headlights, that strobe immediately but with some colors thrown in. the tesla swerves for a moment and then seems to calm, and returns to the center of the lane. the lights stop flashing and instead we see a little spinning device almost pinned onto the bike as an afterthought - with a small antennae. the bike moves forward and the tesla follows smoothly behind, maintaining distance.

the motorcycle goes off the interstate and down some surface streets, with the tesla essentially "in tow"

crackly over-helmet intercom "bag 'em" at a stop sign with industrial warehouses around, the bike stops, and the person adjusts their gloves. meanwhile some folks come out of nowhere and the tesla doors all open on their own - the would-be driver is bundled out and away, someone sweeps the inside and out with a sensor and someone else sits in the passenger seat and sticks a cord into a port. the screens and lights all reboot - and the motorcyclist rides away, the tesla no longer follows it.
