For a few reasons, I wasn't going to grow tomatoes this year.
Then I added some compost to a few beds to help refresh them.
Apparently there were many tomato seeds in that compost.
Now I am growing around 200 tomato plants, but not all will survive.
Let the tomato Hunger Games begin!!!

October!
A very fine month. May I offer you apples, grapes, and pumpkins?

Heh. In 2008 K suffered - as only a frustrated toddler can - ALL SUMMER because she was determined to pick the apples (green! unripe! sour!). It was a great relief to everybody when it was finally time to pick them. Red and sweet, etc. A always enjoyed piking them, but he never got as unnervingly intense about it as she did.
Next summer I want to plant tons of pumpkins, squash, and gourds. Possibly down at home farm, because there haven't been any planted there for at least 5 years, and there won't be any accumulation of squash bugs or vine borers.

This isn't even half of the potato crop from the garden. And just like that I suddenly have a huge glut problem.
Am beginning to regret not planning this out better.....
This photo does illustrate the importance of the home vegetable grower though. About 60% of this crop would not meet commercial standards and would be thrown away. The home grower uses everything. Zero food miles, zero waste and maximum value from water inputs.

- The first rose is a Freida Kahlo, from mother's day last year. It's small, quiet, powerful, and is so lovely. The second one is a Pope John Paul II. It's loud, ornate, its scent is as gaudy and tarty as an Anglican Rite 1 ordination, and I'm glad it's part of our new tradition that for mothers day we add a rose bush. Thankfully we have space and it wasn't a jackson-perkins(if you know, you know).
-(Cue the backing track) THIS IS THE DAWNING OF THE AGE OF ASPARAGUS, THE AGE OF ASPARAGUUUUUUUSSS... 24 plants so far, and it's year 2, and I'm excited for year 3 when we actually get to eat them.
- H made smoked meatloaf and eclairs for mothers day because the local restaurants were full of crappy people and she made what sounded good to her. Buggy and I ate our delicious little portions(he eats more than I do, which is funny to me).
- A few shots from my moms place. I took my saw up there and felled a few trees and cut branches galore. On the hottest day of the year. Because my mom makes the dumbest plans when it comes to doing....(Gestures hands wildly around)... most stuff. I mean this is the same person who took 5 years to get off of a prepaid cellphone. Not because of economics(not judging anybody who does this, I did it too) but because eventhough I could quantify how she could save money, it had to be her idea... top it off with a nice helping of my ex-wife showing up and spewing out Tucker Carlson talking points, and it was quite a day. Mind you, I love doing stuff for my mom and she's beyond appreciative but I call my ex 'she who must not be named' for a reason(oddly enough, she's a TERF too!!!).
- And that last picture? Half of the reason my life is so sweet. I'm a very lucky person that I have these two... and for that matter, all of you. Many blessings and much love y'all!

I'm so happy with my strawberry plant. Not only did it survive winter, I have a better yield and larger strawberries than last year. I also want to try and grow blueberries in a pot. I'm hoping to eliminate the need for the supermarket for my fruit and vegetables despite having a small yard.
