"Oh, sweet summer child, don't you know you're dancing for the snake?"
Thinking about Howard being dismissive and ignorant father. And how maybe Tony turned to Obie, someone he thought could comfort him and guide him on how to make his father notice him, love him. While Obadiah Stane only saw this golden goose he could manipulate for himself.
Thinking about a teenage Tony being handed a glass of whiskey by Obie, because he'll have to once he walks with the big leagues otherwise it'll be rude and "look Tony, that's what Howard did too".
Thinking about how Obie would have shrugged and told Tony ", love is cheap kiddo, just throw in some money and booze and that's it".
Thinking about Howard Stark and how he could've saved Tony a lifetime of misery, if he'd just told his son he loved him.

I had one last science fair before being transported to the future. We were all in a line, all the nerdy kids who worked hard on their projects.
I was somewhere near the middle which was perfect for me, everyone was looking at mine and was intimidated as they shouldve been. It was a perfect model of my dad’s hover car idea it even floated!
Would’ve been an easy win for me, another metal and my face back in the paper. Like it always would be. However- dad was the one judging. That’s probably why half the kids even signed up.
He was going down the line oooing ahing at everything. Giving people helpful advice and all compliments. He seemed to be in a great mood so I was feeling confident.
The kid before me had made a machine that turned on 2 light bulbs at a time. I didn’t find it too impressive but it must’ve taken the kid months so it was impressive to him. He told dad he followed the cute kids guide books Stark Industries put out. That particular build was the “challenge” at the back of the book.
Dad loved it. He was so happy with it. No complaints.
I thought I’d blow this out of the park.
Dad walked over to mine and I happily showed it off. Criticism started flowing from his mouth before I even described it.
“Paint is chipped.” “That’s made out of wood. Cars are metal.” “Are you trying to steal my concept? You’re smart enough to know that’s copyright.” “Why not just make the real thing?”
“You’re a Stark you’re better than this”
“I’m disappointed.”
……
I didn’t even get a sentence out…
The kid next to me won…
I got 9th place.
My face was in the paper- as it always would be
“Is Howard Stark’s son really a prodigy or a phony?!”
…Beaten by that brat.

One thing I hate so much about 911 is the LACK OF APOLOGIES.
Bobby shoves Buck against the wall in s1 & it’s written off as acceptable bc Buck is being nosy, like being annoying is a good excuse to put your hands on an employee.
Buck apologized for the lawsuit & not being around in s3, but Bobby never apologized for holding him back (& lying about it) & Eddie never apologized for screaming at him in the grocery store.
Chim assaulted Buck in his apartment before going after Maddie, and it was never addressed. (Also, does anyone remember if Chim apologized for keeping the Daniel secret from Buck but not the bomber in that one episode? I genuinely can’t remember, I haven’t watched the first seasons in like, a year.)
Also, does Maddie ever apologize for telling their parents about Buck being in therapy? I know they fought about it, but it was also tied in with the Daniel secret (which was fucked but they talked about that) and I can’t remember, but that was kind of shitty, too.
Buck maybe purposefully gets rough with Eddie and definitely hurts his ankle during the game. Sure, we see him feeling bad about it & Maddie scolding him, but no actual apology to his best friend, not even a mention of one.
Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, & idk man, people are flawed, and I know that these characters aren’t perfect, but part of that is apologizing & making amends when you’re wrong. So much stuff is just glanced over to keep the story moving, and I get it but I’m not a huge fan of it. They all have this great, family bond, but how sustainable is that when you’re not owning up to your mistakes and making it right when you hurt someone?

So, good dad Howard
Steve telling Bucky Howard likes them, so they are good to date Tony.
Howard calls Tony into his office
Tony, 20 something: yeah dad?
Howard: those Brooklyn boys, you like them?
Tony: *turns red* kind of yes
Howard: they are on thin ice, one tear on your face, they won't see the light of day
Tony: *huffs hugging him* I'll be fine
Howard: *grumbles* men are scary Tony, one bad wave, you come home
Tony: mom told you about the tide and wave thing?
Howard: kind of kid
Steve and Bucky sees a howard glaring out the window:
Tumblr media
Steve: is howard okay?
Tony: *waves grinning* he is suspicious of you both, I'm his only kid you know?
Bucky: *squints at steve*

i see the “army vet bucky” modern au alternatives for the winter soldier trauma and raise you “life-altering motorcycle accident survivor turned (recovered) painkiller addict bucky”. i think this might be too niche but there’s so many parallels psychologically wrt: the lack of choice inherent in the neurobiology of drug addiction particularly in ppl who started off just taking what was prescribed to them for their pain in like the 90s/early 2000s (when pharma execs Lied about the neurological impacts). the way you kind of lose all that time despite still living it and having the memories, how sometimes the memories feel like they belong to a different person once you get sober. how it separates you from everyone else in your life who Didn’t suffer like that. it’s Compelling. imo.

Rewatching IM2 and nope, Howard calling Tony his greatest creation still gives me the creeps.
It speaks of ownership and entitlement. Not parental love. And worse is that these are the only words of encouragement Tony gets from his father.

Do you take Howard’s age and upbringing into consideration when you criticise him? I feel like most people are missing the point. He wasnt an involved father but neither was my dad and many fathers. It’s unfortunate but it’s the truth. A Father’s role consisted of providing and protecting their families and Howard did just that. His abuse was negligence and most fathers are guilty of that especially older generations. Howard is conservative in a traditional sense as we saw him call out for Maria to pick Tony. Does that mean he hates Tony or wanted to inflict pain? No. Just different times, I bet all of the superheroes had terrible fathers. Tony should understand/know how patriarchal society is.
ah so we should excuse Howard of child neglect and abuse bec he's from a different time and apparently fathers don't provide emotional support, either?
a father is supposed to do more than provide monetary support or protection. clearly he didn't protect him TOO much considering he was BFFs with Obiadiah Stane lol
howard doesnt get to clap himself on the back for the bare minimum he provided OR for anything Tony does with his life. he did the absolute bare minimum of keeping him fed, clothed and sheltered
babe idc if Howard wasn't intentionally harming Tony. Trauma was the impact of his shitty parenting, sorry. Tony seems perfectly capable of providing the emotional care and support and love with Morgan from the little screen time we see of them. I'm not going to give Howard a pass bec "patriarchy"

Scintillation, Chapter 4
a little late. Blame the holidays.
Title: Scintillation, Chapter 4
Fandom: MCU
Pairings: Tony Stark/James “Bucky” Barnes, Erik Killmonger/T’Challa, one-sided Steve Rogers/James “Bucky” Barnes
Fic summary:
Everything changed for Tony Stark in a cave in Afghanistan.  For years he’s been dealing with the fallout of the shrapnel imbedded in his chest—both physical and mental—in his own ways. He’s got an arc reactor in his chest and demons that stalk him in his mind as he becomes Iron Man and eventually an accepted part of the Avengers during the attack on New York City.
All he has to do is keep giving people what they want.  That’s the lesson learned.
Die, resurrect, live as much as you can. Wash, rinse, repeat.  He thought he’d known why he was the way he was… but he and everyone else missed one tiny little detail caused by his repetitive brushes with death.
Or, a guide coming online as he almost dies yet again at the hand of a friend shatters the controls put upon the Winter Soldier and sends Sentinel James Buchanan Barnes fully online and into a feral rage in the middle of Siberia.
Steve’s lucky T’Challa’s there to rescue him from his best friend gone feral.
Tags/warnings: MCU canon levels of violence. Howard Stark’s A++parenting, panic attacks, PTSD, unhealthy coping mechanisms, Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt, will eventually have bonding sex (and other explicit sex acts for enjoyment—no rape), issues of consent with Sentinel bonding with a guide to save their life, Sentinel/Guides are known, spirit animals, Discussions of racism (T’Challa, Erik and Tony have some talking to do), interrelationship and partner violence mentioned, Discussion of child neglect (Tony and Erik) and poverty (Erik, Steve, Bucky), Not Kind to Steve Rogers (eventually he gets better), other tags to be added later—will warn at top of chapter if not listed here although I feel like Erik is his own kind of warning.
Tumblr media
Wakanda, 2016
Erik can only watch as his Guide cradles Tony. James is in his hold but the White Wolf isn't fighting him, every sense locked on his Guide who is in distress, mechanical hand held outstretched towards Tony.
"What'chu do to set Tony off?" Erik softly asks James, not expecting an answer as he can feel the tremble of a zone in James's muscles where they're pressed together. Barnes is stuck deep, body frozen in a high state of alert as his senses over-tuned on the distressed Guide.
"I called him mine," James's whisper is so faint that if Erik hadn't had his senses dialed up, he would have missed it as it's subvocal, and neither Guide acknowledges the sound confirming Erik's assumptions and his own chest does something funny at the heartbreak in the other sentinel's tone "It's my fault."
"Nah, bruh," Erik dismisses firmly. "This isn't you that's set him off. He would have blasted you comatose if it was. This is internal."
James whimpers and weakly makes a lunge for Tony that Erik aborts, having to lift James off his feet. He's so disorganized in the zone that James doesn't fight Erik; he just strains against his hold.

Just imagine a kid Tony with wings. Born with them and they've only grown as he's grown. It's an extremely rare genetic that was basically bred out in these later generations.
So rare that Howard bounces between wanting to cut them off to give his son a normal life and to study his son, to watch him grow with them.
Howard being a single father, even with Jarvis and Ana's help is still confused on what to do with his son. He's thankful Peggy decides to step in and take charge.
She gets him to keep Tony's wings, talks him out of experimenting on his son, letting him be a normal boy, and not hiding them. If anyone has anything to argue against it in ways of a 'normal' child, they have to go through her and Ana.
She's already seen what Ana can do in middle of a grocery store with a loaf of bread after a stranger commented on baby Tony's little black wings.
Her respect for Ana just grows everyday.
Auntie Peggy who cherishes Tony and helps his wings grow, helps him grow into them. Auntie Peggy whose there for every tantrum and tears and loves Tony with all her heart.
Jarvis is the one to put Tony on a baby leash and let him practice flying in the play room. That's only put to a stop when Tony accidentally breaks the ceiling light.
They have to find new places to hide the sweets because top of the fridge doesn't work with the likes of Tony.
When Howard dies, under mysterious circumstances, Auntie Peggy steps in to raise her godson as her own. Not that she's ever loved him any less.
And maybe with time and the right questions, Tony can get answers to the mysterious scars along Peggy's back that look just like where his wings are.
