360th Anniversary of Bohun's Death
17.02.1664 Ivan Bohun was executed in the Polish military camp
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ivan Bohun (Іван Богун) was a real person, an authentic Ukrainian Cossack hero from the mid-17th century and one of the most important Cossack commanders during the uprising of Bohdan Chmielnicki (Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Богдан Хмельницький), which started in 1648 ('Ukrainian Independence War').
As such, he has many diverse appearances in the Ukrainian culture and in the Polish culture (in literature, folklore, visual arts, music, opera, theater, cinema, etc.). Perhaps, the most famous worldwide (or just Tumblr-wide) of them all is the novel "With Fire and Sword" ("Ogniem i mieczem") by the Polish writer, Henryk Sienkiewicz, from 1883/1884. H. Sienkiewicz changed Bohun's name to Jurko, but described some of his authentic deeds, i.a. the role, he played during the battle of Beresteczko, 1651. The novel itself, as a part of the well-known "Trylogia" (which occupies an important place in the Polish culture), has many adaptations in art, theater, radio and cinema. The most famous of them is the Polish film from 1999, directed by Jerzy Hoffman. So...
Bohun's appearance in that film is not everything, in fact, it is only the tip of the iceberg of Bohun's myth. There is much more to explore and admire.

28. do you collect anything?
used to!
I've been collecting one hryvnia coins since I was in middle school. They're big and heavy and also very pretty. Used to keep them in a small wooden chest like I'm a pirate hiding treasure.
Tumblr media
I also used to collect pretty cards from every Animation Film Festival (or Event) I've been to.
And had two small collections of matches and 6-sided dices.
(used to since my house was destroyed with all of the collections in it)

I found these plastic dinosaur minies and decided to paint them to look like Lucky and Wuerhosaurus from paleo pines & and i will show you all the steps in case you want to do something like this yourself
Tumblr media
This was my firs time painting minie figures and i tried using the same techniques people use for DnD figures so you can just look up those tutorials on youtube.
I found these ugly plastic dinosaurs on at a flee market for like 5 hryvnias and this is how they looked before their makeover:
Tumblr media
First thing i did was wash them with soap and strip off all the spray paint from them using polish remover/acetone, untill they were this weird yellowish plastic color. (Idk if this step was necessary but i wanted to romoves all the dirt & dust so the paint sticks better)
Tumblr media
Then i painted them fully with a dark color. I dont advise using pure black. I used a more dark-ish grey with a bit of blue so the undertone works better.
Tumblr media
By the way here are these mfs near a match (for size comparison ofc).
Next i dry-brushed them with a cream color to bring out the texture and leave the dark color in the creases and shadows. I had to go over with a few coats so that they were not too dark.
Tumblr media
Fore some reason they made these guys all wrinkly instead of scaly but it did help with the texture lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The more i looked at them the more i saw how weird and inaccurate they are. Still cute though)
Tumblr media
And the last steps were to cover them in colorfull washes:
The key is to go slowly, building up the colors layer by layer. I also added a bit of different hues in some places to make the colors less more alive (like a bit of pink on the plates, or some green in certain places idk it just gives more variety to the colors. with out it it the colors look a bit monotonous).
Tumblr media
Also, seriously go play the game!!!! it`s just so cute. Dinosaur designs are cutified but still faithfull to how the animal looked according to science (minus the pastel colors lol) and you just know that it was made by true dinosaur lovers.
They do have a tumblr blog at @paleopinesofficial but i see their content more on tiktok

"After the war, the environment will take centuries to recover."
According to Roman Strelts, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, about 20% of protected areas in Ukraine are under threat of destruction, and about two thousand cases of environmental damage have already been recorded.
Ruslan Hrechanyk, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, says that the military aggression has left no component of the environment intact: air, water, soil, flora and fauna. Engineering infrastructure facilities that help preserve the environment have also been damaged.
"We need one trillion hryvnias to restore the environment. But every day the damage is increasing. The coordination headquarters of the State Inspectorate works 24/7 together with law enforcement agencies to record the damage and make calculations," says Grechanyk.
Oksana Omelchuk, an environmental activist, says that shell explosions lead to pollution of the area and the death of large animals, as they are more likely to activate mines. Fires are also dangerous, as they are difficult to extinguish in the midst of hostilities.
According to the WWF report, the largest areas of forests that have been in the danger zone due to military operations are located in Chernihiv (423.5 thousand hectares), Sumy (287.9 thousand hectares) and Luhansk (205.1 thousand hectares) regions. In Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Kharkiv regions and the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, the hazardous areas reach 126-165 thousand hectares. In total, about 1,849 thousand hectares of forests are in the danger and occupied zone due to military operations.
The Deputy Minister notes that cruise missile attacks, mine explosions and other dangerous objects have caused about 600 fires covering 13 thousand hectares. The environment is also severely affected by the burning of oil products, and harmful chemicals that get into the soil destroy it.
According to Ruslan Hrechanyk, the war has already affected 812 protected areas, the total area of which is almost one million hectares or 20% of the total area of all protected areas in Ukraine. The territories under occupation and those that have been subject to hostilities have suffered the most damage.
Under threat of destruction are 16 Ramsar sites (wetlands of international importance), about 160 areas of the Emerald Network (a network of protected areas created to preserve species that need protection at the European level) and two biosphere reserves. Some national parks are on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe.
Environmental restoration requires a lot of money, so the Ministry of Environment is counting not only on the support of partners but also on compensation for damages from Russia after international courts. Ukraine may become the first country in the world to receive reparations for environmental crimes.

(Kozak) Bandurist (Бандурист), alternatively Blind Man (Сліпий) or Slave (Невольник) by Taras Shevchenko
Iskivtsi, Russian Empire (now Ukraine). 1843. Sepia ink.
Taras Shevchenko, also known as Kobzar (a word for a Ukrainian bard) is one of the most well known and important figures to Ukrainian cultural and linguistic history. Active in the mid 19th century, Shevchenko was a poet, writer, artist, and political figure and is credited with creating the foundation for Ukrainian literature and language in general.
These sepia ink drawings are two of many drawings Shevchenko did of a theme on a blind kobzar playing the Bandura (a Ukrainian folk instrument) in 1843, during his first trip across Ukraine. Three years later, he would write a poem on the topic, the title of which gave these pieces their alternative titles. Here's an excerpt from the poem connected to this scene:
«Отак на улиці під тином
Ще молодий кобзар стояв
І про невольника співав.
За тином слухала Ярина…»
"And so on the street by the fence
Still the young kobzar stood
And sang about a slave
Behind the fence stood Yarina..."
In this scene, Yarina recognized her husband Stepan in the blind musician, and her role is then attributed to the young woman shown in the background of these pictures. Several depictions of the scene, including the first one I show here, also places a young boy in the scene as a guide for the kobzar. His hairstyle is called an oseledets, traditional of a Kozak/Cossack depiction. The original of this first painting, one of the biggest sepia pieces done by Shevchenko, is unfortunately believed to be destroyed in a fire in 1919, but still exists in two photo copies. It was also used as art on the 2005 100 hryvnia bill.
