When a storm surge swept dozens of wild horses and cattle from the coast of North Carolina, no one expected there to be survivors. Then hoofprints appeared in the sand. Issue no. 132 — “True Grit,” by J.B. MacKinnon — is now live at The Atavist.
The shifting, amphibious nature of Cedar Island was never more apparent than on the morning of September 6, 2019. Under the whirling violence of Hurricane Dorian, maps lost all meaning. The Pamlico and Core Sounds joined to become a single, angry body of water, shrinking Cedar Island to a fraction of its acreage. It was no longer separated from the mainland by the thin blue line of the Thorofare, but by nearly six miles of ocean.
Most of the 250 or so people living on the island were safe, their homes built on a strip of not-very-high high ground precisely to weather the wrath of hurricanes. The wild horses—49 in all—were in much deeper trouble.
There were also some cows. The cows did not have names.
Our latest feature, "True Grit," is a remarkable story about the unexpected survivors of Hurricane Dorian. Read it today!

“There is no such thing as a truly wild cow. While Cedar Island’s cattle range more or less freely, the technical term for them is feral—they are the descendants of escapees from domestication. The island’s mustangs are feral, too, but while visitors often come to Cedar Island solely in hopes of seeing the Banker horses, as the area’s herds are known, next to no one makes a special trip to photograph the “sea cows.”
The cows are striking to look at, though. While they vary in color, many have a bleached-blonde coat, blending in with the pale sand and the glare of the sun on Cedar Island’s hammerhead northern cape, where both cattle and horses roam. Tourists are happy to see the cows, just not as happy as they are to see the horses. Here and across America, a mustang—mane flowing, hooves pounding the earth—is an embodiment of beauty and freedom. Cows are not.
For Cedar Islanders, the cows are part of what makes their home distinctive, a fond and familiar part of the community and its history. In fact, the cattle have been on the island far longer than the mustangs, who were transferred from the more famous Shackleford Banks herd three decades ago. But the relationship people on the island have with horses is different than the one they have with cows, in much the same way it is for people nearly everywhere.”
This month, our sister site @atavist is featuring J.B. MacKinnon's remarkable, heartwarming story about the Cedar Island cows who survived Hurricane Dorian. Read an excerpt here.

Hurricane Dorian is Coming! Better Go Buy Wine
Growing up in Florida means growing up with hurricanes. Other states have Snow Days for missing school, we have Hurricane Days. I can’t count the number of times the first day of school was cancelled due to an impending storm. My son is only four, but we are about to go through his third hurricane experience! We live on a barrier island on the Atlantic coast of Florida so when a hurricane is…

Waving at Grief: Hurricane Dorian Three Years Later
Waving at Grief: Hurricane Dorian Three Years Later
I live on Churchill Drive. An unassuming name in an unassuming neighborhood. I live on a hill that some 10YS Family has jokingly deemed Mount Freeport. They call it that because it protected my family’s home during Hurricane Dorian. They call it Mount Freeport because, standing on it, you can look out for miles and see just how devastated and simply unlucky some families were.  I once heard a…

Midlife Family Meeting Aging Parent Disaster Plan
MidLife Sibling Meeting Needed for Global Warming A midlife sibling meeting needs to be convened after the catastrophic global warming nightmare of Hurricane Dora unleashed on Maui, where 1000 people were missing, many probably older residents who could not get out quickly, creating a midlife sibling nightmare.  The identified dead are all elders. Scores more victims will be identified in the…

Highlights From My Bells Hells Playlist
So I have a Bells Hells playlist that has some really perfect songs if I do say so myself, and I want to talk about my choices! So here's some of my favorites. (Here is the full playlist btw, with songs ranging from word-for-word-perfect to Just The Right Vibes Idk Man)
Rule #2 - Moonlight by Fish in A Birdcage For Orym :) About a person on the moon singing to their lover on Earth. "All I want is to come home to you." Is this song about Will or about Dorian? I think it's even better because it works for both. There are lines that are for Will and lines that are for Dorian and it's all mixed up and full of longing and in light of recent confessions? Just perfectly heartbreaking. "Finally broke down / Houston, please come in / There's someone that I need to talk to / Honey, how've you been? / I miss you, my dear / There's something that I have to say" "It's good to hear your voice / I'll tell you what the world looks like from up here / there's hurricanes / and blizzards too / please stay safe and warm 'til I get to you"
Control by Halsey For Laudna. This one is very straightforward. "And all the kids cried out please stop you're scaring me / I can't help this awful energy / Goddamn right you should be scared of me / Who is in control?" The rest works pretty well too, there's more lines that feel Very Delilah, it just works.
Allies or Enemies by The Crane Wives For the whole party! I happened to get into this song right when the whole "powder keg" conversation happened, and it's only gotten more relevant. "Are we allies or enemies? This will be the death of me." It's great it's perfect it's them. "What happens now? / Do we have another go / Do we bow out / And take our seperate roads / I'll admit I've had my doubts / But I want to be let in not out" "Remember when I could tell you not to smile when you were mad / And you would always crack / And we'd both be laughing in the end? / Now you're not so quick to forget"
Moving in Place by Shauna Dean Cokeland This song is so Ashton. It's about using drugs as a teenager and feeling stagnated, blaming things on other people, drowning in daydreams where you're awesome, spending time with a group of friends you really care about.... It works quite well. (I also really recommend this song if you have ADHD/use music to stim, it's got really great overlapping vocals and kinda scratchy sound--this is the song I put on when my brain is eating itself and no other music can get through to it. It's great.) "Take me to the far side of the beach / Before it falls into the ocean / Before you notice I'm eroding / I know you don't wanna be lonely / I know 'cause I would feel the same thing" I'm having trouble picking out specific quotes because they're all really wordy and long, but trust me it works and it's a great song.
Soap by The Oh Hellos Ashton! I especially like this for Ashton and Orym (platonic or romantic both are good) but it also works for Ashton and the Hells—and once again, this song hits even harder after the shard incident. As far as picking specific lines I just want to quote like the whole song, but I'll exercise some restraint. "I've heard since I was younger / That oil and water don't mix / They're polar opposites / With a molecular rift you can't fix / But I swear with all your burnt bridges / You can leech what's caustic and find / A rudimentary lye / Some kind of miraculous bind" "Oh, no / I think I'm not quite ready / To let you circle the drain / All the things we've broken / Can be puzzled together again / All your sums and your pieces / Are enough to clean up all / The messes you've made" "I think that you're worth keeping around. I think that you're worth holding onto." "I've heard if I were tougher / Then maybe I'd make it alive / I've got a tender side / I'll need a harder shell to survive / But if seeing is believing / I don't know I've seen a thing grow / Without an open coat / Not without a softness showing / I know maybe you're not quite ready / To loosen your hold / On the safety blanket you've been keeping around your shoulders / But your sums and your pieces / Are enough to make you whole / You gotta let go" "It's gonna hurt like hell / but we're gonna be well / I'll give you my best shot" Oops I basically just quoted the whole song. But look how perfect it is!!
The Leaving of Liverpool (folk song; I like this version by The High Kings) This one's for Dorian! Specifically, for Dorian leaving :( It's an old folk song about going away from home and leaving your love behind. It's not as character specific or detail heavy, but it just feels so right for Dorian having to leaving Orym and Fearne in Jrusar. "So fare thee well my own true love, and when I return united we will be. It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me, but my darling, when I think of thee." My mom and I go to a Celtic Christmas concert every year, and one of the last songs is always this one. Everybody knows it, and they invite us all to join in the chorus. It's a beautiful moment, and I'm so grateful to Brian O'Donovan, the host, who passed away this year. He brought so much joy and gave so many people a piece of their home to enjoy here. He will be missed.
Canary in a Coal Mine by The Crane Wives If the title didn't clue you in, this one's for FCG! It's not just because of the mine, though, it all works really well. This song is about the 'canary', who puts so much into a relationship, doing everything to keep their partner happy and support them, but fears that when they need help themself their partner will abandon them. "Feed me promises, keep my heart well / I'll sing you songs until the darkness does recede / But if in the end I lose my voice / Will you forget about your love for me?" "Let the dirt hang heavy in your chest / Drag me deeper down the long, dark ground / Know that all my love will your breath / I will save you when your lights go out"
Bonus: A Convocation of Fauns (A Faunvocation If You Will) by the Oh Hellos Fearne. The title says it all. (It's just instrumental lol)

What Pride had Wrought Pt. 7
Cutting Through the Enemy
What Pride had Wrought Masterpost Previous: Base Camp
The PC begins to head to the battle.
Party comments:
Iron Bull: Now that’s a view. Gets your blood going.
Vivienne: Corypheus’s soldiers appear to be on the defensive.
Cassandra: Listen to how close the fighting’s gotten! It will be worse ahead.
Sera: Come on, let’s go plug some arseholes!
Sera: This place is rubbish. What are we doing?
Varric: One last push, and we can lick our wounds. I wonder if Corypheus will show.
Dorian: I hope your right about this temple, Morrigan. I could use a building or two. Morrigan: Do the woods discomfort you, Pavus? Dorian: It’s mostly the people trying to cut our heads off that manage that.
Morrigan: Do you see the magic crackling? Something more powerful than the red templars stirs.
A soldier points them ahead.
Soldier: Emperor Gaspard and his bodyguard are just down the hill, Inquisitor. They wish to join you for the last push. Soldier: Marquise Briala and her bodyguard are just down the hill, Inquisitor. They wish to join you for the last push. Soldier: Empress Celene’s general is just down the hill, Inquisitor. He wishes to join you for the final push.
They continue down the path to help Orlesian soldiers fight.
Choice dependent dialogue:
Gaspard rules [1]
Briala and Gaspard rule [2]
Celene/Public truce [3]
1 - Gaspard rules:
The PC joins Gaspard against the red templars.
Gaspard: For Val Royeaux! Hyah! Gaspard: Hah! Well met! Gaspard: Come, you scoundrels! Put your backs into it! Gaspard: To the Maker with them!
After the battle: Gaspard: Well fought, your worship! Let’s hope there’s more where they came from! Go find this temple your aides were on about. We’ll hold position. [4]
2 - Briala and Gaspard rule:
The PC joins Briala against the red templars.
Briala: Fight on Inquisitor! Orlais will turn the tide! Briala: For the Dales! Briala: Steady aim! Watch for the rear guards! Briala: Your time has come!
After the battle: Briala: We’ll hold position while you find your way to this temple. Briala (Dalish PC): Good luck, my friend. May you truly be the Maker’s chosen. Briala (non-Dalish PC): Best of luck, Herald of Andraste. [4]
3 - Celene rules/Public truce:
Orlesian General: Hail the Inquisitor! Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Celene, stands with you! Orlesian General: Glory to Andraste and the Inquisition! Glory to Orlais! Orlesian General: The beasts are flanking to the east. We’ll hold! We will hold! [4]
4 - Scene continues.
*They continue forward, fighting through more red templars and some Wardens as they proceed through the river past the great waterfall.
PC: Those were Grey Wardens. They must be the last of those enslaved at Adamant.
Party comments:
Blackwall (???): Poor bastards. Corypheus has them dying by the dozen.
Blackwall: We’ll remember the men they were. And we’ll avenge them.
Cassandra: If they were forced to obey him, death will be a blessing.
Iron Bull: That, or you got another set of Wardens pissed at you somehow.
Morrigan: A most inglorious end. Still, if these puppet-Wardens show no mercy, neither can we.
The party continues, helping Inquisition soldiers along the way.
Soldier 1: For Haven, and the Divine! Soldier 1: The monsters are running, Your Worship.
Soldier 2: They fall. The red templars fall! Soldier 2: For the Inquisition!
Soldier 3: It’s the Inquisitor! Soldier 3: For the Herald!
Soldier 4: We’ve readied the way. Soldier 4: At your command Herald.
The party continues to the red templar forward camp.
Morrigan: There, ahead. An entire camp of red templars.
Party comments:
Cassandra: Watch out. They’ve posted archers on the wall.
Iron Bull: Watch yourself. Arches on the wall.
Blackwall: Look sharp. They’ve got archers on the wall.
As they fight, strange elves join the fray.
Party comments:
Iron Bull: Katara bas! They fight like a hurricane!
Blackwall: These elves are damned fast!
Vivienne: Who are these elves!
Cassandra: Elves! But where did they come from?
Dorian: Are those elves? Where did they come from?
Varric: Who are these guys?
Cole: These elves want us dead! Iron Bull: We noticed!
The fight ends.
Choice dependent dialogue:
Dalish PC [5]
non-Dalish PC [6]
5 - Dalish PC PC: Who were those elves? They didn’t look Dalish.
Party comments:
Solas: It seems this Temple of Mythal is not deserted after all.
Varric: Yeah. Dalish are a lot more chatty.
Blackwall: they’re no friends to the templars, that’s for sure.
Vivienne: No, not at all.
Sera: Least the bastards killed those red templars.
Iron Bull: Whoever they are, they don’t like the res templars any better than we do.
Cassandra: They fought unlike any Dalish I have ever seen. [7]
6 - non-Dalish PC PC: Were we just attacked by elves?
Party comments:
Solas: It seems this Temple of Mythal is not deserted after all.
Varric: Uh-huh. But they don’t look like any elves I’ve ever seen.
Cassandra: They do not look like Dalish or city elves.
Sera: Not for long, we weren’t!
Blackwall: Strange looking ones, too. At least they hate red templars.
Vivienne: Did you feel that aura? Everything they wore dripped with magic.
Dorian: Elves wielding strange magic, at that. Could you feel it? [7]
7 - Scene continues.
Morrigan: Perhaps these creatures are the reason few return from the Arbor Wilds.
They continue on, helping more soldiers.
Soldier 5: We’re pushing them back, Your Worship. Soldier 5: Always ready, Inquisitor. Soldier 5: Ready at your command.
Soldier 6: We’re ready to serve, my [lord/lady] Soldier 6: We’re honored, Inquisitor. Soldier 6: We stand with you, Your Worship.
As they continue, they come across more allies as they fight red templar behemoths at the ruined archways.
Choice dependent dialogue:
Sided templars, Barris died [8]
Sided templars, Barris lived [9]
Sided mages [10]
8 - Sided templars, Barris died: Fletcher: (templars conscripted): Templars of the Inquisition! The Herald of Andraste fights with us! Fletcher: (templars allied): We fight to reclaim our honor! For the Order! Fletcher: Keep at them!
After the battle: Fletcher: We’ll break the red templars, Your Worship. I can feel the battle turning. With you here, the Maker favors us. [11]
9 - Sided templars, Barris lived Barris: (templars conscripted): At your command, Herald! The Inquisition’s templars are ready! Barris: (templars allied): Inquisitor! The Templar Order won’t rest until these bastard fall! Barris: For the Herald of Andraste!
After the battle: Barris: We’ll mop up any remaining red templars, Inquisitor. Andraste mark me: we’ll avenge every good knight who died in Therinfal. [11]
10 - Sided mages Fiona: We’ll hold these monster, Inquisitor! The free mages stand with the light! Fiona: inquisitor! The Circle of Magi stands with you! Fiona: Holds fast! Fiona: Quickly! One of them weakens!
After the battle: Fiona: Your scouts say more red templars are on their way. We’ll guard against them. Andraste guide you, for I’ve heard Corypheus is ahead. [11]
11 - Scene continues.
Leliana fights in some ruins along the way.
Leliana: Good hunting, Inquisitor! We’re keeping them at bay! Follow the river to the temple!
They find Cullen fighting at the temple gates.
Cullen: Press on, Inquisitor! Cullen: the Inquisition will not yield!
After the battle, the party presses on.
PC: That must be the Temple of Mythal.
Party comments:
Vivienne: Prepare yourself, my dear. It’s likely Corypheus will make an appearance. PC: I’d count on it. Be ready.
Varric: We haven’t seen Corypheus yet. bet that’s about to change. PC: I’d count on it. Be ready.
Blackwall: If we find Corypheus anywhere, it’ll be there. PC: I’d count on it. Be ready.
Cole: In front of us. Rage burning red. So close to what he wants, what he was, what he will be. PC: Corypheus.
Dorian: Any chance Corypheus will finally grace us with his presence? PC: I’d count on it. Be ready.

Apparently Ron DeSantis feels that science is "woke" and therefore needs to be suppressed.
Ron DeSantis has been accused of a “catastrophic” approach to the climate crisis after he launched his campaign for US president by saying he rejects the “politicization of the weather” and questioning whether hurricanes hitting his home state of Florida have been worsened by climate change.
DeSantis, the Republican Florida governor who announced his bid for the White House via a glitch-heavy Twitter stream on Wednesday, has previously dismissed concerns about global heating as “leftwing stuff” and he expanded upon this theme during a Fox News interview following his campaign launch.
“People tried to say when we had [Hurricane] Ian that it was because of climate change but if you look at the first 60 years from 1900 to 1960 we had more major hurricanes hit Florida than the 60 years since then,” DeSantis told his interlocutor, the former Republican congressman Trey Gowdy.
“This is something that is a fact of life in the Sunshine state. I’ve always rejected the politicization of the weather.”
DeSantis is telling Floridians, "Don't believe your lyin' eyes – or your wet feet for that matter."
Environmental groups have also taken aim at DeSantis over a record on climate they say is no better than Donald Trump’s, his rival for the Republican presidential nomination.
While governor, DeSantis has adopted bills banning Florida’s cities from adopting 100% clean energy goals and barred the state’s pension fund from making investment decisions that consider the climate crisis due to what he called a corporate attempt to “impose an ideological agendaon the American people”. He has also attacked the US military for being “woke” for warning about the national security risks posed by climate impacts.
DeSantis is a ruthlessly ambitious putz who is fixated on accumulating power at all costs.
Warm seas act like jet fuel to tropical cyclones. The temperature of the North Atlantic has unmistakably increased over the past hundred years.

Maybe DeSantis will try to blame "woke thermometers".
The problem for Florida is not so much the number of hurricanes but the intensity of hurricanes.
Category 5 storms making landfall in the US used to be rare. But two (Hurricane Michael, Hurricane Ian) have hit Florida in just the past five years.
Maybe DeSantis cut his high school physics class to watch far right porn. So he may have missed the lesson about warmer air being able to hold larger amounts of moisture.
Tumblr media
While wind speed gets the most media attention, it's moisture in the form of rain and storm surge which kills the most people in hurricanes.
We all remember how Trump tried to use a Sharpie to modify a map showing the path of Hurricane Dorian. DeSantis would probably burn the map and close down the National Hurricane Center for being "woke".
DeSantis as president of the US would be a danger to the planet.
