''Could I have some more ah-gua, per fah-for-eh?'' Owen Wilson asks the waitress in a restaurant just off Piazza di Spagna in Rome. His Italian is 100 percent Texas tourist; you almost hear President Bush speaking Spanish. ''I don't know why they can't make the Italian food at home taste like here,'' Wilson says, eyeballing a piece of tuna in his salad. ''Go into any dive, and it's the best Italian food you ever had.''
As the wonder rises in his flat, twangy voice, it's hard to imagine anything more charmingly American than Owen Wilson in Rome. He flops down at a cafe table with all the formality of a guy about to pop open a Bud. Certainly the shaggy blond hair, baseball cap and blue jeans do their part. Or maybe it's because he's bowlegged: he always looks as if he has just jumped off a horse. ''Can you imagine how I felt, coming here from Dallas?'' says Wilson, 35. ''I mean, it's so beautiful!'' The actor, who co-stars in ''Starsky & Hutch'' opposite Ben Stiller, has been in Rome for the last five months working on ''The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.'' Directed by his best friend and college roommate, Wes Anderson, it tells of a father-son conflict between Bill Murray's Jacques Cousteau-like man of the sea and Wilson's airplane pilot. When Wilson talks of living among the wonders of Rome, he speaks elliptically, stymied, like a suburban guy who has landed on a dazzling new planet. ''After being in Rome, flying into Dallas/Fort Worth and driving by the Dairy Queens and the 7-Elevens . . . it's sort of . . . Europeans must find . . . here they are with all this beauty . . . the churches with the Caravaggio paintings . . . it's so . . . different.''
Movie stars in Rome have long enjoyed the affections of a city that loves celebrity. But Wilson reverses that equation: he has thrown his arms open to Rome. ''It's not like I'm Bruce Willis,'' he says with a sheepish grin. ''He probably has a hard time going outside.'' But Wilson is everywhere: watching American football at an Irish pub near Piazza Navona, buying cheese at an outdoor market, zooming past the Vespas on his bicycle. ''I tear around Piazza del Popolo and then go down to the Colosseum, and I ride around that, and then I hit that place -- what is it? The Circus Maximus.'' You might think Wilson -- the handsome brother of the handsome actors Luke and Andrew, and Sheryl Crow's ex -- was on his junior year abroad.
But Wilson is no wide-eyed hick. Writers have called him a ''big-popcorn movie star'' and ''bankable headliner.'' He is an actor who has it all: down-home folksiness and art-house weight, megaplex sex appeal and a deep sense of complex characters. His peculiarly deadpan delivery (he sounds like an old-time character actor playing a boozy cowboy) and versatile presence on screen (he can be ironic and naïve) have made for a charmed career. ''Bottle Rocket,'' his first film, a crime caper written with Anderson, who also directed, was screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 1993. ''It's kind of incredible,'' he says, a toothpick twirling in his teeth. ''Wes and I were friends in school; we'd go see two movies a night. Wes worked in the projection booth, so we went for free. And here we are at Cinecittà, where Scorsese filmed. It's good, man.'' The two continued to work together on scripts for ''Rushmore'' and ''The Royal Tenenbaums,'' which received an Oscar nomination for best screenplay in 2001.
Wilson's first major roles, in ''Shanghai Noon'' and ''Zoolander,'' showed his finesse with action and comedy. In ''Behind Enemy Lines,'' his portrayal of a military pilot shot down in Bosnia and on the run revealed an equal gift for drama. Now, with his character in ''The Life Aquatic,'' he has another chance to broaden the goofy screen persona that isn't far from his real self. ''This character is a lot less of me. He's very innocent and sweet-natured. A lot of characters I've played are rife with insecurities. But he seems happy.''
With three new films in the works, he could be dizzier than a rodeo pony. (He has roles as a villain in ''The Wendell Baker Story,'' written with Luke, who co-stars and co-directs with Andrew, and a romantic lead in ''Wedding Crashers.'') But as our lunch ends, he kicks back with one foot on a stool and talks of leaving Rome. ''I think the thing I'll miss most is the feeling I have here -- feeling really relaxed and just kinda riding around on my bike, seeing stuff.'' After a polite ''Thank you, and see yuh,'' he zooms off on his bicycle, so deeply American that the grandeur of Rome seems to shrivel in his wake. You imagine for a moment that you are on some college quad, not before a palazzo made of stones dragged from the Colosseum.
Ah-ree-ve-der-chi, man.

So, Do You Remember the 80s ‘Jazz Revival’?
Prodded by my memories of Rip, Rig & Panic, (the group, not the Roland Kirk number), I’m taken back to the UK ‘Jazz Revival’ of (roughly) the 1985-1990 vintage. For a brief period, in London at least, jazz music experienced its very own Retromania, and seemed to as cool/hot and hip/hep as it imagined itself to have been back in the ur-bebop and hard bop days. Much has been written about the ultimately conservative nature of this revival, with its memorialising of ‘sharp men in even smarter Italian suits’ (anyone remember The Tommy Chase Quartet?) and the Blue Note, ‘instant classic’ photo artistry of Francis Wolff, but which ultimately served to the disadvantage of the more experimental and ‘risky’. (It’s easy to lay the blame at the feet of Wynton Marsalis, but the seeds were always there for absolutism, from the very start, with influential USA critics like Albert Murray and Stanley Crouch, early neo-cons who increasingly decried the avant garde and post-Free Jazz experimentalism.) For me, this era coincided with my own reintroduction to jazz music, a process which began around 1981, and represented a return, this time permanent, to a music that I had first explored in the early/mid-70s, but which had been sidelined by punk and post-punk from 1976-1981. Bands like Rip, Rig & Panic served as a gateway back to jazz (and beyond), and the New Musical Express (NME) helped me in this, through such writers as Richard Cook, Andy Gill and Graham Lock. So this ‘revival’ was at once both personally-experienced and externally-informed.
There are a few literary signifiers that help to sum up these times, times which, in retrospect, seem to have been somewhat of a triumph of style over substance? (The 80s also arguably marked a significant lessening in quality in rock and reggae music, and we still await a definitive account of this entire troubled decade.) Have a look at the development of The Wire typography, once it became a monthly rather than a quarterly publication (i.e.from 1984 onward): The Face pointed the way forward, an alternative to the ‘inkies’ of the NME, Melody Maker and Sounds, and The Wire in turn fully bought into the aim of  more stylish presentational values, with the increased involvement of designers and ‘creatives’, as what clothes the musicians wore seemed to become as important as what they played. The Wire remained both a pleasure to read (featuring, despite everything, mostly more ‘left field’ jazz players, with even free improvisers also in evidence), and also to look at (the front covers were events in themselves, as they still remain). The bubble, however, had burst by 1990, and the covers began to feature the likes of Michael Jackson, Van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, a reflection of the decreasing influence of ‘pure’ jazz, and an inexorable move towards what ‘hip’ young people were actually listening to, once they found out that Art Blakey and Max Roach were not, in actual fact, “great to dance to”. Electronic dance music soon became the default option of the tragically hip, an option which The Wire was soon to take up, especially after Drum and Bass / ’Jungle’ upped the avant stakes. (Main’s Hydra-Calm, from what I remember, won its 1992 ‘Album of the Year’, for an example of the magazine’s ‘new direction’).
In 1986, three of the older older NME writer ‘purists’, Roy Carr, Brian Case and Fred Dellar, put out ‘The Hip: Hipsters, Jazz and The Beat Generation’, which was a self-explanatory coffee table book, and exactly suited the whole ‘jazz revival’ shtick, “Hip has shifted more shades than any other philosophy throughout history”, proclaimed the back cover, rather vaguely, but which at least demonstrated that the authors didn’t take it all entirely seriously, unlike Robin Tomens. The latter published (only one printing, I must assume, in 2000?) his ‘Points of Departure: Essays on Modern Jazz’, a rather ambitious title for what was essentially a collection of what would now be called blogs, trying to demonstrate how hip and jazz-anointed he was (he doesn’t cover free improv, however). Although the book is often cringeworthy, in its attempts to glorify its author’s second-hand insights into various examples of the post-WW2 jazz modernists (mostly American), I have always had a sneaking fondness for it, as it in many ways mirrors my own tentative paths of discovery in the same time-period (1982-1988), alluding to a shared gaucheness, as we both tried to negotiate the various entries into the music, at points at which it all seemed insurmountable. His accounts of shopping in Ray’s Jazz Shop and Mole Jazz are priceless, and his reflections are basically those of a fan first, writer second, a position to which I can completely relate.
I’m no-one to talk: I sent in my own list to The Wire of ‘10 albums that I am currently listening to’, a regular spot in the magazine at the time (to show off my listening tastes, basically and embarrassingly, in retrospect), and which appeared in a 1986 edition of the magazine, from what I can recall (it soon, very correctly, ditched the whole daft concept). It seems that I wanted my own ‘brilliant corner’, however tiny and naff (to use a very 80s word), in the ‘revival’! What put me off, eventually, was the almost inevitably cosy, ‘closed shop’ mentality that most cliques and ‘scenes’ tend to engender (and which Tomens, for one, appeared to love), but which quickly prove to be so transient and gone-so-soon.
We can now, thankfully, postulate another ‘revival’, one centered on Cafe Oto since its opening in 2008/9, one that appears not to seek validation in places like The Wag Club. (Oto’s various presentations usually transcend ‘jazz’, or, at the very least, transmutes it, and transmutation should be something that jazz has always welcomed?) With more musicians of colour and more female improvisers, this updated ‘scene with no name’ seemed built to last, at least until Covid-19 put it all on hold (at least in the area of live, in-person performance). One of the positives of the 80s scene was the clearly increased involvement of women and black musicians: this was undoubtedly an incremental and undoubted fact by 2020, exemplified, for me at least, in the line-up, at Oto in 2018, of a group led by Louis Moholo, and featuring Jason Yarde, Shabaka Hutchings, Alexander Hawkins and John Edwards. No women in this band though...Doh!! ( If I remember correctly,I think they called themselves ‘Five Blokes’!)

2017, In Review
Tumblr media
If I am being honest, the #1 thing I will remember about 2017 is the one thing I want to forget about it: the rage and the hatred — specifically, my rage and my hatred. It had an intensity I’d never previously experienced, and hope never to again. But, of course, it is incorrect to place this emotion in the past. My anger has only slightly dissipated, and continues to burn every damn day. That said, it hasn’t just been a corrosive force, but a teaching tool as well, demonstrating that hatred born, suddenly and intensely, of a particular target and singular focus, can easily spread outwards, and will sooner or later turn back in on its source. Which is where I find myself now, exhausted and no better off.
I write this as a pre-amble to my list of favorite music/art because that is this year’s context - because this time around, the culture I admired, was inspired by and engaged with had to serve a (slightly?) different purpose. Or, maybe, a more intense one. There's always the question of how much a critical ear is guided by personal circumstances, and how much by social influence; it is a partner to the artistic process, always has and always will be. (One reason I continually dismiss the recurrent “end of criticism” jeremiads, because the doomsayers are merely writing obituaries for a particular process of thought or distribution system, rather than the art of the crit itself.)
But once I found some semblance of sea legs to ride through the current epoch — “some semblance,” because I believe not a single living creature shall escape The Now unaffected — I recognized a need for another critical way of looking at how/what we create, and at the purpose behind which we creatively consume. A way of seeing and hearing that not only anticipates the narrative but also lays groundwork for its next chapter. This is, of course, an imperfect measure, because culture doesn’t move in predictable directions, and almost any 20-20 prophet is likely to either be a speculator or a fool. Often, but not always.
Yet, if there was one underlying principle that guided me in 2017, it is to try and understand of what will come after the anger and the hate. Some of the answers were aspirational, some of them were reflexive, and others filled in important parts of the backstory that were missed because I was too busy paying attention to the shiny expensive things in the store window. Maybe it’s just an exercise of trying to steer the anger towards a more useful place.

Victories boost morale and increase your self esteem. Defeat is where the real life lessons are. A loss will make you re-evaluate your current path and build a better one. Defeat keeps you on your toes and stops you from getting comfortable. Your opponent did you a favor. Don’t get mad. 10 Wonderful Moments From World Of Coffee Budapest
For three days in mid-June, the World of Coffee Budapest 2017 filled and fueled the Hungexpo fair center. Coffeemeisters and coffeelings from around the world united, celebrating the drink in ways old and new, traditional and millennial, literal and sartorial. Here are 10 of my very favorite highlights from a memorable event.
Starsky & Hutch
You may recognize the Loveramics Egg as the official cup of the World Latte Art Championship, though this year marked the brand’s first on the expo floor. Debuted was the brand’s new Starsky & Hutch series, evoking a “mid-century design” and “American diner-style,” according to sales manager Jenny Cheung. Like their eponymous plainclothes detectives, the cups appear pretty ordinary, albeit colorful and with a body “so thick and strong,” as per Cheung, they can take on high-pressure situations (like direct AeroPressing, microwaves, dishwashers, and who knows, perhaps bashing an escaping crook over the head).
etzMAX
“Your caw, caw, caw-ffee can still be good!” Etzinger’s crow logo seemed to be calling. The Liechtenstein-based burr manufacturer (say that three times fast) premiered a prototype of its on-demand grinder designed specifically with short-staffed restaurants in mind. “We wanted to reduce it all to the essentials and make it as small as possible, as simple as possible, so even if you’re not a barista you can get a good shot,” said Andrea Schoech, who works for the company and is married to its founder, Christian Etzinger (also the engineer behind Baratza’s Sette burr technology). Expect the etzMAX—with its 32-millimeter conical burrs, digital control panel, and removable 1000-gram hopper—to be available by yearend.
Black Sheep
No need to clutch your pearls: that pristine white Giesen W1 was not vandalized. The graffito is part of recent rebranding by Black Sheep, one of at least 16 Hungarian micro-roasters represented at the World of Coffee. Black Sheep senior roaster Gábor Tóth explained that his Debrecen-based business recently updated its “old-fashioned” logo to coincide with the opening of a second cafe and roastery. The venue will house the little lamb of a Giesen along with a similarly customized black W15, helping fulfill a corporate mission to provide “a bridge between the new wave of fruity coffees and the classic, darker roasts.”
Prêt-à-pour-over
New Zealand’s Nara Lee may not have won the 2017 World Brewers Cup—that honor went to Chad Wang of Taiwan—but the contestant still wore a fitting crown. Off the competition floor, her copper dripper-turned-cocktail hat glistened in the Hungarian sun. See the beaded wiring details captured on camera and proudly shared by Lee’s home cafe, Black and Gold Coffee/Eatery in Auckland.
Brewista Artisan
If Punky Brewster bought a kettle, surely it would be this rainbow Brewista Artisan. The limited-edition 600-milliliter gooseneck brewer with variable temperature is already available in most of Asia and will follow in August for Europe and the US. Other new hues include rose gold, flash black, and pearl white. And speaking of pale pleasures, Brewista’s potentially game-changing NutraMilk nut milk machine will be launched in October, said Carolyn Chen, marketing director at parent company Smartco.
Ironheart
Comandante’s C40 Ironheart first showed off its silvery tattooed cylinder this past spring in Seattle. But in Budapest, the Munich manufacturers started selling their handmade manual grinder with a carbon steel burr set. It is ideal for fine-grinding Turkish coffee (while leaving Comandante’s C40 nitro blade for espresso). As company co-founder Raphael Braune noted: “Carbon steel has a 66 Rockwell hardness, so that’s basically like a Japanese sword.”
Ethiopian Women in Coffee
In a separate building, out of earshot from competition roars and arena anthem interludes, the World of Coffee gave space to slower-paced, more intimate gatherings. In this spirit, 10 representatives of the Ethiopian Women in Coffee association held two cuppings of 28 washed and natural coffees. The event was sponsored by SheTrades, an initiative “providing market competitiveness training and services to benefit women in coffee,” as host Andrew Hetzel of Coffee Strategies put it. I personally attended this event, a highlight within my list of highlights from the show—if you get a chance to check out this programming at upcoming coffee events worldwide, do it.
Coffee Socks
Uri Wollner’s main job is running Cophi cafe in Warsaw, but his side-hosiery-hustle gained some traction in Budapest. “You get up in the morning, put your feet down, you see this,” he said of the coffeehouse quips and barista flair stitched onto his Coffee Socks. “Start the day positive and remember what you’re here to do, which is spreading love.” Your opinion on a barista’s goodwill ambassador role notwithstanding, you can design your own socks and order 100 to be produced on a six-yarn “old-school machine” in Lodz, Poland’s historical textile town, where Wollner has family roots.
BOB Coffee Lab
The BOB Coffee Lab stand presaged the same-named cafe and roastery due to open this summer in Bucharest. Behind it are Romanian triple Coffee in Good Spirits champion Paul Ungureanu, 2016 World Coffee Roasting champion Alexandru Niculae, and two other co-founders. But what about Bob, you ask? “Bob is a man who one day woke up as a dog,” offered Ungureanu, referring to their corporate mascot: a Kafka-reading shaggy canine.
