On Hyuuga and Izuki

I was writing out the answer for this ask when I soon realized it's going in the direction of an analysis rather than my opinion, so I present this short HyuuIzu friendship essay.

As I previously said, the bond between Hyuuga and Izuki was kind of overshadowed by other pairings but it has always been there throughout the series. The two share a long history. After the basketball club was formed, Hyuuga looks closer to Kiyoshi but that doesn't mean he stopped being Izuki's long time friend. Their interactions, despite not having much screen time, show how they care and understand each other.

The Seirin team formation flashback probably holds most of those. Throughout this flashback, Izuki was always thinking about Hyuuga and was the one who described to others what sort of person Hyuuga was. Both in here and in the present story, many Hyuuga moments are followed by Izuki's reaction, like this:

Izuki cares by silently watching from behind. He never urged Hyuuga to join the basketball team, but showed great disappointment when Kiyoshi said he failed to convince Hyuuga. He saw Hyuuga growing closer to Kiyoshi every day and fondly watched over their blooming friendship.

He tries to get Hyuuga opportunities to be with Riko

Anyway it's written on the Kuroko no Basuke Wiki that Izuki followed Hyuuga to Seirin but I can't find any official source for that information so if you know please tell me.

Hyuuga doesn't show his concern as much as Izuki, but he's there when Izuki needs support. More than anyone on the team, he understands Izuki and the amount of effort he poured into basketball, therefore he has complete trust in Izuki's abilities.

From what's shown in Q242, it seems they often chat about TV shows and things of that sort together.

Since Izuki and Hyuuga go way back, they usually have a good grasp of what the other is thinking:

The long amount of time they spent together made Izuki's perfect pass in the Winter Cup Finals happen - the pass starting off a chain of events that ultimately led to their championship. It could only be accomplished because it was Izuki who passed the ball and Hyuuga who received it.

Conclusion: There's a lot about HyuuIzu that was expressed through fairly minor details. The way you have to pay closer attention to notice how close they truly are is what I like about this pairing.

okay so since it’s izuki’s birthday let’s... analyse his character songs and what they say about him! i’ve been wanting to do this post for awhile, and what better day than today?

(shut up, i am not obsessed)

(okay maybe i’m a little obsessed but i mean LOOK AT HIM)

first up is kitakore which you can listen to here!! kitakore is really just a fun hammy song with tons of puns (literally. every line is a pun. it can feel like a punch to the gut. kitakore!). BUT there are still a couple of impactful lines!

Uzagararete mo yamerarenai (English: Even if I get on your nerves, I can’t stop)

i honestly think that this line attests to izuki being neurodivergent in some way. as the amazing Timb @natureismynature​ expanded on in her fic (which you can read here), izuki’s puns could be a form of verbal stimming that helps calm him down. it’s one of my favourite headcanons that he’s autistic and/or ADHD (the latter being projection, tbh), because yay for neurodivergent characters~

kitakore is sung with a quick tempo and a peppy beat, which adds to the whole relaxed vibe of the song. this is something you could sit and listen to while chilling on the beach, or while scrolling through memes on your phone. it also showcases the VA’s ability to bring out the light edge that’s ever-present in dear izuki’s voice!! nojima’s voice is strong and clear throughout, never faltering as he rattles off pun after pun in time with the music. really perfect for izuki and his love of dajare!

next we have tatta hitotsu no hibi which you can listen to here and. oh. this song really hits you in the meow meow after the playful 2010s boy band sound of kitakore. GOD it just says so much about the kind of person izuki is???

izuki’s eyes see too much, sometimes. but if he didn’t have them, he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the rest - even with how much he practices - and that HURTS. 

Hagayusa ha tokidoki / mawari mo makikonde Atarashii chikara wo umidasu (English: There were times I got everyone else caught up in my impatience As I tried to invent new strength in myself)

he’s constantly trying to find something, anything, just to stay on the others’ level. and sometimes he pushes too hard and goes too far but... to him, in the end, all that matters is flying to the top with seirin. he doesn’t want to be a burden - in izuki’s eyes, to be a burden to seirin is the worst imaginable thing.

this. just... the sheer fucking wisdom of this...??? keep in mind this kid is literally 17. but these lines so highlight the aspects of izuki’s personality that i love most - his unerring resilience and his ability to look towards the future without wanting to be stuck in the past or present - something i struggle a LOT with. izuki’s always got his head raised, never down, and that’s gorgeous.

tatta hitotsu is very different from kitakore in terms of sound, tempo and range. it’s sung at a lower, softer tone, and is much slower. the background music, while itself soothing and beautiful, truly only serves to accentuate the VA’s voice as he guides you through izuki’s character. the song is smooth, and its more sober tone is perfect for the wisdom izuki’s dropping! nojima’s voice is low but firm; he effortlessly dances across every note, stringing together something that’s heartfelt and gorgeous. the lower pitch really brings out what izuki’s like when he gets serious - calm, but firm and unwavering.

last but not least, challenger spirit (the hyuuizu duet), which you can listen to here!! i love this song so much because tbh it reminds me of everything i love about hyuuizu. 

Dual: Oretachi ha chousensha datte / nando demo omoishirou Sonotabi tsuyoku natte kita kara (English: We are the challengers / Let’s never forget that Remembering that fact has helped us grow stronger)

both of them are always pushing each other. they remind each other what it is that they’ve come this far. they have a unique connection, and don’t need to say half the things that others would have to, in order to understand each other!

H: Kuyashisa nara norikoeta / senpai no iji darou I: Shimeshita ijou ni kurai tsuite kureta yo na (English: H: Our regrets? We’ve overcome them / That’s our will as senpai I: They’ve exceeded our expectations and risen to the challenge)

Yume mitaku tookatta yo na Demo naze ka shinjirareta n da Kono chiimu de miru mirai wo Okujou de chikatta mirai wo (English: Dual: Just like a dream, it seemed so distant But somehow, we could believe In the future we see with this team In the future we swore on the roof)

here we see how they both are consistently on the same wavelength. that’s why that final pass happened so perfectly - because it was hyuuga, who izuki had known for so long, loved for so long (read that however you want). because it was hyuuga, and their effortless chemistry made it possible. perhaps i’m overreaching, but... i love them so much.

coming to the song itself - it has a strong beat, but also melodic. like the perfect blend of kitakore and tatta hitotsu! the drum work in the background is truly fantastic. re: the singing, the gentleness within hosoya’s voice jumps out here, whereas nojima dominates the duet. nojima’s voice comes out firmer and stronger, and hosoya is more melodic and goes with the flow. i think their voices blend beautifully - the juxtaposition of izuki’s clear, powerful voice with hyuuga’s gentler, smoother one is just perfect! it also embodies their friendship: though hyuuga seems to be the overpowering presence, they share equal parts, and there are areas where izuki takes charge as seen in this song.

(okay maybe i’m reading too much into it but can you blame me i love them)

IZUKI HOURS #3

I'm in a shipping mood today~ so I'll be critiquing all Izuki ships I have seen! I'll list out pros and cons of each. This might get long lmao.

HyuuIzu - the top Izuki ship on Ao3! (Good job, me 😂) It holds a special place in my heart, I have shipped them since June 2017 (I'm a late entrant to KuroBasu xD). In fact, tomorrow is the three year anniversary of the day I got into KnB and fell in love with them!!  Pros: captain x vice captain, childhood friends, know each other very well, opposites but actually kinda similar, opposites attract, really cute tgt, SO MUCH ANGST WRINGER, fluff too though... tbh sooooo much potential for literally everything. Just perfection. (wdym I'm biased shut the fuck up) Cons: kinda one-sided as Izuki gives more for Hyuuga than Hyuuga does for him.

TakaIzu - a fun ship!! I really see them as friends more but I love the dynamic authors bring about. Pros: really fun, lots of crack AND angst material, cool concept, idioms, PUNPPORTUNITIES. Cons: crackshipping, no real canon basis, a little too similar imo?

KiyoIzu - cute asf!! Kiyoshi's super supportive of Izuki and finds his puns funny, an automatic point in my book. Pros: fluuuuffff!!! so so so much fluff. Perfect for AUs. Complement each other on and off court. Cons: Kiyoshi's loving nature may be too much for the more private Izuki.

IzuRiko - awww just awesome shit!! Riko’s badass nature matches perfectly with Izuki’s more relaxed personality. + they’re just super cute.  Pros: Izuki knows her well and knows to let her lead. Riko knows what works best for Izuki and will bring out the best in him. Fluff/angst potential, 100%. Cons: Riko’s kind of bossy and snaps at Izuki’s puns. Also, Izuki’s privateness might be too much for Riko, who’s also not so open.

HimuIzu - lol this is really more of me and @kibashinosss‘s interactions, so I’m using our stuff, Seb! lots and lots of angst, some fluff and TONS OF HORRIBLE FLIRTING. It’s hilarious in concept bc theyre so different lmao Pros: funny as fuck, crack/fluff/angst perfection (esp angst though), pretty boysssss Cons: Himuro needs someone more open and Izuki needs someone less pushy.

MayuZuki - lmao I’ve seen a lot of fem!Izu with Mayu and I gotta say... eeeeehhh. Still, it’s cute in concept and the few IzuMayu fics I did read were amazing. Pros: crack ship king, lots of potential, can go literally anywhere Cons: kinda bland really, also Mayu’s very selfish and Izuki’s very withdrawn so... kinda difficult to work.

There may be a part 2 if I think of more ships!! Thanks for putting up with me guys lmao

omgomg are you new in the fandom?? I'm so glad that to this day knb is still gaining fans with all the shounen sports manga popping around (which I am not complaining)tbh, I entered the fandom quite late, like 2013 because back then I was just phasing out of my geeky kpop fangirl state (which I still check out these days and have reverted back to the anime geek fandom) and wowwy wowww it was a mess with all the knb fanarts, fanfictions, translated doujinshis, it was heaven imo👼The most popular ships you would probably know, like KagaKuro, AoKuro, AkaKuro but my favorite is KiKuro, which is quite a popular ship!! (which I still adore to this day.) I also liked other small ships like KagaHimu, HyuuIzu, MidoAka and basically everyonexKuroko (not gonna lie.)I mostly follow the manga because 25eps of watching the same thing was intimidating and boring to me, but you shouldn't miss it! I probably liked the hype in the anime just as much as the manga😂 I remember watching season 2 on my friend's laptop in school with another friend and we were basically wow-ing the whole time even though I knew the plotline already lol Reminder, I still have to finish the rest of the season even though I read the ending already:sThe fandom was so active, like everytime you typed in a tag search, there'll always be new stuff to check out, and scanslation groups (bless them) will have something new rolling in which makes life easier. Though knb fandom is active, I don't think it was as in-your-face as yoi which I quite appreciate. I think everyone was respectful of their ships so I don't remember there having any fights between ships or fandoms. Well I do remember when Haikyuu popped up people started bad-mouthing knb for their teenage-drama filled plotline but it was nothing big I guess?Hopefully you can still check out most of the knb works from my tumblr though, I remember I reblogged A LOT so most probably it might still be there.
