[ID: Natsume Yuujinchou fanart. Matoba is crouching on the ground next to a cat and dangling a toy to try and get its attention. The cat is contently licking its paw and ignores him. End ID]

The conflicting characterizations in fandom over Gojo is actually insane because a lot of his behaviors aren’t implicit or off-screen behaviors. Gege is not misrepresenting or assassinating his character. Gojo has always always been that way—some ppl were just very comfortable viewing him from a fanon perspective.
Everyone shitting their pants over this is crazy mostly because 1) this is NANAMI’s perspective on Gojo. He and Gojo aren’t exactly tight and don’t meet eye to eye 100% of the time. 2) HAIBARA agreeing in the next panel is because the Gojo he knew when he was ALIVE was basically EXACTLY like that. He didn’t care about protecting people. When Geto would bring up that jujutsu is for protecting the weak he ragged on him.
Obviously this isn’t 100% true. Gojo is quite literally pouting throughout this entire scene and looks upset. I think a lot of the disappointment comes from the fact that his death feels abrupt and unsatisfactory. Maybe people are looking for a death scene where he is simply honored and not ragged on by others. This is another complaint entirely and I can understand being disappointed in this regard. But to watch people describe this as “character assassination” is odd, because if anything, this is all IN character.
