.
Izjik had lied to him, simple as that. Plenty of others had lied to him, and worse lies at that. But Izjik was supposed to be the one person Sepo could give up his cynical vigil around and just trust. She was a break from all the scheming bastards who made up the world. Not even for an instant had Sepo suspected that she might not be telling the whole truth of her interrogation. That this endless chase hadn't been all his fault.
.
Well, look where that ambition had gotten her. Stranded on a beach in the capital of Fuck-Off Nowhere. Because, of fucking course it had.
It was all that damn siren's fault! That and whatever the hell had been tearing at their boats like a crazed beaver. Tyche took a quiet, peaceful moment to reflect on just how much she hated seafolk. Damn pirates, the lot of then. And the ones who weren't pirates were worse. They'd kill you just for fun.
.
"Hello," Izjik greeted Master Chitlal, trying her best to keep any worry from her voice. "My name is Itla... uh, Itla Taamori, and this is my- my betrothed, Salius Corbrium. It is my sincere hope that you will consider my daughter Nari for your program. She's quite the, uh, the quick study, I can assure you. Totally."
Izjik could feel the sweat sliding down her back. She'd always been a terrible liar, and this was a damn big lie. With their accents, they'd decided it would be easiest to try to pass her and Twenari off as a mother-daughter pair of island foreigners. Hopefully, Master Chitlal would be too polite to ask where exactly in Janaz they were from or why they looked as related as a fish and a bird.
.
With a meaty crunch, the siren stopped, as if he were a machine whose motor had broken. Protruding from between his eyes was a taut, black spear. A gush of blood left his mouth, and that was that.
Eyes blurring with tears, Twenari looked back at Djek. He was breathing hard and bloodied up to his elbows. The shadow whipped back into his hand and after a beat, he fell to his knees and vomited.
Twenari took a step, then another, then joined him on the ground. She just wanted to sleep. Every fiber in her body burned, crying out for rest she couldn't give.
Eyes aching, she forced herself to scan the battlefield for danger. Silver-clad bodies littered the beach. She clawed her earplugs out, listening intently.
.
I'll tag @elsie-writes @katwritesshit @rkmoon @unrepentantcheeseaddict and anyone else who wants in :)

Hang Your Halo • Twenty Six
Tumblr media
Master | Twenty Five | Twenty Seven
Girl, I've always loved you, but something's changed. Blame it on time, the road, or the ride, but it ain't the same. It's a different kind of feeling, not the one I knew. From the sweet on your lips to how your hand in mine fits. Girl, I've always loved you, but I don't love you like I used to. This gets better every time you kiss me like this, it's stronger the longer I'm with you, yeah.  More than every single day before, didn't know I could ever love vou more than I did.  But baby, I do.  I don't love you like I used to.
Love You Like I Used To x Russell Dickerson
Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin x OC Beckham “Halo” Teague
Series Warnings: 18+ ONLY, minors DNI. Eventual sexy times. Brief descriptions of combat. Kidnapping. Mentions of drug and weapons trafficking. Violence. Smut with kinks (spitting, throat grabbing, hair pulling, spanking, soft dom/brat dynamics, so much dirty talk) aplenty.
Beckham
Jake grabs us each a drink and immediately sheds his shirt while dropping into a lounge chair, and I'm 99% sure I have drool leaking out of the corner of my mouth. I pull my flimsy coverup over my head, toss it into onto the deck next to Jake's shirt, then I park myself between his knees and lean back against his chest.
"Are you a beaver with kids? Because DAM DADDY!" I exclaim, anticipating his response. He doesn't disappoint and doubles over in laughter, his arms wrapping around my waist as he buries his face in my shoulder.
"You really are something else! That was a good one, Angel," he compliments me with a kiss on my temple.
"Thank you, thank you! I'll be here all night, tips are always welcome," I tease
With his head tucked into my neck, he mumbles "Oh sweetheart, do I have a tip for you!" I cackle at his obvious innuendo as a shadow falls over us.
"I'm afraid to ask what you're laughing about, so I'm not gonna.  Where is y'all's room?" Nat asks.
"Next to the woman of the weekend, apparently," I reply with an eye roll.
"Ohhhh I bet she just wants you to hear how vocal she is in bed when she's drunk!" Nat whisper shouts.
"That's what I said too!  Awful bitch," I mutter the last part under my breath.  "Speaking of, who the actual fuck can afford this boujee ass shit??  There's something off about them."  I say, mostly to myself.
"Babes, you're letting your distaste for her hitting on your man cloud your judgement.  Let's focus on the mission, ok?"  Nat soothes.  For her to say something definitely means I'm overreacting, so I'll lay off it.
Our eyes land on Kate and Jensen, so we rise from our chair and join them with Nat and Bradley right behind us.  Soon, everyone that is coming has boarded and we set sail, so to speak.  Within a few hours, we've snacked on overpriced hors d'oeuvres and have downed a minimum of 4 fruity cocktails each.  Kate and Jensen have loosened up quite a bit and are being super affectionate with each other.  I find it adorable, then quickly remind myself we're dealing with two menaces to international society.  Karrrrrrrrrie drops by a few times, making sure to rub her hands over Jake, Jensen, and Bradley as much as possible.  God, I hate that woman.  After she walks away to mingle with other overpaid assholes, Kate giggles and spills a lesser known fact about the Jones couple.
"You know they're totally swingers, right?  Like, when we first moved in a few years ago, they invited us over to dinner to 'get to know us better' and then boom!  Between dinner and dessert, Karrie breaks out an NDA!" Kate exclaims.
Jensen chuckles and warns her to keep the volume down before encouraging his wife to continue with her story.  "Jens and I looked at each other, completely confused as to what's going on, and she says 'Our group is both close knit and confidential, so signatures are required before I explain any further' like we have any idea about what's going on!  We refused to sign anything without more information, and they refused to provide it without a signature.  That's when I noticed the setting that included red wine, oysters, dim lighting, and mood music.  I called Jens' phone from my watch and he pretended it was a work emergency!  I swear I've never moved so quick in my life.  It was never confirmed, but I absolutely believe that was an NDA for a swinger club," Kate finishes in hysterics and we all join in on the laughter.
Jake pipes in with a "note to self, never accept a dinner invite where we're the only guests!" and shudders.  Next thing we know, birthday cake is served, happy birthday is sung, and the six of us have found a relatively hidden corner to camp out in until bedtime. The guys talk shop, discussing everything from who they think will take the World Series, to sports cars, to Glock vs Sig Sauer. While the boys animatedly argue over which of the latter is best, the girls talk about all the things, covertly including our sex lives.
The last topic lands us on the current subject of trying to get pregnant. Apparently, there are different positions that are rumored to help with conception, who knew?! Kate, apparently. She eventually opens up about their trouble getting pregnant and reveals they're currently in the midst of fertility testing to find out what's been causing their problems. They've each done multitudes of labs and nothing has been discovered so far. Nat takes this opportunity to slip in some questions about how it could cause some financial problems. "Isn't that super expensive? I've had friends go through IVF and it cost them a small fortune!" A soft look crosses Kate's face. "It definitely can get expensive. We've been so blessed with fantastic insurance from our company and it's been almost completely covered up to this point. The dollar signs attached to future treatments if needed makes me sick, but both mine and Jensen's families have offered to help contribute if we come to that point." She replies, love dripping from her words. The boys rejoin the conversation and it turns from the more somber subject to lighter ones full of laughter.
We finally drop off the passengers that aren't staying the night and tuck into our cabins for the night. Thankfully, Krazy Karrie was shitfaced and Todd had to tote her to bed. Surely she'll be tanked and go straight to sleep tonight. I wash my face, cleansing it from the sea salt and makeup that coated it, then climb into bed with Jake. We talk about our earlier conversations and both agree that Kate and Jensen have a real love for each other despite their current illegal dealings. Since I was laying on my stomach, my (Jake's) shirt had ridden up my back, and the tattoo down my spine peeked out. Jake pushes the shirt up further, revealing the entirety of the words, and traces the letters that are permanently etched into my skin and my soul.
"I've always loved this, you know that? Number one, it's sexy as hell. Number two, knowing the meaning of it makes it beautiful. Your strength has always impressed me. Hell, it intimidated me at first which is why I needled you so much. That and I never outgrew the elementary school ideal of picking on the girl you're crushing on," he says with a boyish grin.
"Your opinion of me is far too high, I'm worried I'm gonna disappoint one day when I break down and shatter," I reply with a sad smile, my eyes fluttering closed as he continues to rub his fingertips up and down my back.
"Angel, you could never disappoint me. We're all human and have our limits, vulnerability is what gives us strength. I promise, I'll hold you while you put yourself back together when you do shatter. You don't need anyone to do it for you, you're far too incredible for that, and I'm just glad I get to be the one next to you for it all. You amaze me every day, tiny." He takes a deep breath, wraps his arms around me, and pulls my chest to his before locking his eyes on mine.
"I love you, Beckham Emory Teague. I'm pretty sure I have since I found you in the locker room that day, but I was too dumb to see it. I think you're it for me."
My breath catches in my chest and my eyes well with tears. I haven't felt this cared for since I lost my parents and raw emotion floods my heart.
"I love you, Jacob Tyler Seresin. Your cocky attitude, your fierce protectiveness of me, and your giant heart that you hide from everyone but me. I think you might be it for me, too."
We seal our declarations with a deep, tender, soul searing kiss as my tears drip onto his chest. I snuggle closer, breathing in the comfort that I can only find with him, and bask in the moment as he plays with my hair until I fall asleep.
I'm half tempted to slide something heavy in front of our door just to make sure Karrie doesn't break in and ruin it for us. I listen close and hear someone vomiting on the other side of the wall. I would have never expected the sound of someone puking to make me as happy as it just did, but here I am.
"Goodnight, cowboy. I love you," I whisper.
"I love you too, goodnight my angel," Jake replies. I'm once again lulled to sleep by the sound of his heartbeat, happily drifting off with a smile on my face.
Twenty Seven
Hi my loves!  We're getting close to the finale of book 1!  I'm super excited for what I have planned and will probably be tying it up with a very tangled bow in the next few chapters 😉.  Leave me any predictions you might have! As always, thanks for reading and loving this as much as I do!

Sharing my thoughts about Micah (spoilers for the whole game basically)
I've been thinking recently about the literary concept of the unreliable narrator and why RDR2's writing is amazing when it comes to Micah. Yes, Arthur witnesses many of Micah's bad deeds, like being an asshole to certain members of the camp and the whole Strawberry massacre. But so much of what Arthur thinks about Micah and even what Micah says to Arthur is unconfirmed. We as the player don't witness it. Such as:
Blackwater: often, gang members bring leads to Arthur, and Arthur is the one who has to make the call whether or not to go for it. Yes, if the information is bad, Arthur does call out the gang member for it, but it usually is Arthur's decision whether or not they go. In the case of Blackwater, Dutch made the decision to go, but we don't know the exact details that Micah brought him about the job, either. Given how Dutch acts later in the game, he may have proceeded even if Micah's information included the money being well-guarded.
Strawberry (the arrest): Lenny is the one who relays the story about Micah's arrest, and he doesn't share all that many details about it. Given that Micah gets arrested with O'Driscolls, who are known to start problems with Arthur all the time in Valentine, it's very likely they did the same with Micah. And, as we know, Micah is awful in a fist fight (couldn't even finish a fight against TB Arthur lol), it would make sense that Micah would go straight for his guns when threatened.
"Dutch said you was a big shadow cast by a tiny tree": is Micah just trying to insult Arthur, or did Dutch really say it? Honestly, I can see Dutch saying that about Arthur.
Blessed are the Peacemakers: Yes, it seems pretty suspicious that Micah would push so hard for peace talks with the O'Driscolls, and then have it go so wrong for poor Arthur. However, we don't witness what happens to Dutch and Micah when they are supposed to meet up with Arthur on the road back. One thing that I find really interesting is the random event where Micah and Dutch apologize to Arthur, their "story" about what happened after is the same. Word for word. But Micah's seems more honest. Makes me wonder whose idea it was not to rescue Arthur, especially since Dutch acts so surprised when Arthur returns.
Jenny Kirk: Did Micah actually sleep with Jenny or was he just trying to rile Arthur up? Arthur is angry, because Lenny was sweet on her, but we never meet Jenny. We have no way of knowing if Jenny liked Lenny back. For all we know, Jenny was just looking for some quick fun with Micah.
Cain: Okay, it's pretty damning that you can catch Micah kicking Cain at one point, but all Micah ever says to Jack is that the dog isn't coming back. Does he truly know, or does he just want Jack to stop shouting?
Betraying the gang: and here is the big one that we only get hearsay for. Milton's words to Arthur honestly make zero sense, but by this point, we are ready to believe it. We hate Micah, so of course Micah betrayed the gang. But if Micah truly was talking to the law, wouldn't they have found Beaver Hollow sooner? While I do think Micah interacted with the Pinkertons at some point, hence Milton knowing Micah's name despite him being a new member, it's unclear how much he actually told them.
tl;dr: Anyway, Micah is super complex, there are many possibilities for his character, and I'm very interested in Micah discourse now.

i only stay up until 2am these days because I lie awake at night thinking about how Adora breaking the sword means she sacrificed everything for a lie and it's probably eating her alive from the inside out bc she loves her gay catgirl but she left her behind when she found the sword and then the sword turned out to be evil and it makes me really sad

Hello! It's a bit late for me, but here is Day 12 of Harringrove April from chrisbitchtree's list! Today's prompt was "baseball" and I think we all saw this one coming. Read yesterday's drabble here.
Billy hates the hospital with its white walls and white floors and beeping machines. He hates how the nurses wake him up every hour to pound on his back to make sure his lungs stay inflated. And how no one will let him talk about what really happened except Dr. Owens and he fucking hates that guy. But at least Max visits and sometimes Steve brings her or comes on his own.
The only problem is that Steve seems hesitant to talk about what actually happened too. He dances around the issue, hemming, and hawing and asking Billy what he thought of the last movie he brought or asking him for book recommendations. Except, Billy knows Steve was there and he’s seen the baseball bat with the nails stuck in it in his trunk.
Steve is on his way right now, probably pulling into the parking lot if the clock is right and Billy is determined to get some answers. Some real answers, not stupid theories from Dr. Owens or strange looks from the nurses. He wants this out in the open and he wants Steve to tell him what the fuck happened to him.
When Steve gets up to his room, he has his Coach bookbag and a water bottle and he’s smiling as he walks into the room. A nurse calls out to say goodbye to him and he grins when he turns to Billy’s bed. “Hey, man, how ya feeling?”
Billy wants to roll his eyes but that will definitely give him a headache. So he settles for waving a hand and leaning back in the bed. “Better than yesterday, I guess,” he mutters. “Take a seat, take a load off.”
Steve rolls his eyes for Billy and drops his bag on the ground. He pulls his usual chair over and sits down, smiling at Billy. “You seem like an eager beaver today, what’s on your mind?”
Billy shrugs, he has been having a good day all things considered. They let him take the feeding tube out for a bit to try some chicken broth on his own earlier and he’s not as tired as he has been. This is partially why he needs to ask Steve about the Shadow right now. “Yeah, good ball game last night,” he begins.
Steve furrows his brow and laughs a little. “I didn’t know you were into baseball.”
Billy shrugs, wishing for a cigarette so he could affect an air of confidence and casualness. “You know, sometimes it’s just nice to watch a game, a real American sport.” He sweeps his gaze over Steve. “You own a baseball bat, don’t you? Kinda hard to play ball with though on account of the nails.”
Steve's face goes carefully blank and his shoulders creep up towards his ears. "Yeah, what about it?"
Billy fixes Steve with a blank look as well, sighing a little bit. “Man, can’t you please tell me what the fuck happened this summer?”
Steve looks to the door like he’s expecting someone to come bursting in at any minute to tell them to stop. That it’s confidential and can’t be discussed without explicit permission. When nothing happens, though, and the world keeps turning, Steve takes a deep breath and shifts forward. He scrapes his chair across the floor so he can get closer to Billy and drops his voice. “What has Owens told you?”
Billy’s eyes light up and he shrugs. “I was a conduit for an inter-dimensional freak show and that girl who pulled me out is a different kind of conduit.”
Steve nods, looking down for a moment. “I don’t know everything, the kids are at the center of it. But basically, there’s another dimension connected to ours and sometimes things get through. Eleven…Jane, the one who pulled you out, she has powers that let her open and close the connections, she calls them gates.” He takes a deep breath and runs his fingers through his hair. “And it’s fucking crazy, but it’s real and we’ve been dealing with it for three years.”
Billy nods, knowing if it hadn’t happened to him directly he never would have believed Steve. But the way he fidgets and the dark circles under his eyes he can never seem to get rid of telling the whole story. “Where does the baseball bat come into it?”
Steve blows out a breath, dragging his fingers through his hair again. “It was Nancy’s first and Jonathan drove nails into it to fight back one of the monsters, the kids called it a Demogorgon. But it’s become a staple because then there were the demodogs and the Mindflayer- that’s what they call the Shadow.”
“How did you get in charge of protecting the kids anyway?”
Steve shakes his head, leaning back. “That’s more Nancy’s job, Dustin just tends to drag me along. Or demands to use my car.” He shrugs and looks at Billy. “You weren’t ever supposed to get mixed up in this.”
Billy scoffs and shakes his head. “No, I don’t think anyone was supposed to get caught up in this and I don’t want to know how it started, but it seems like someone was messing around where they shouldn’t have.” He looks back at Steve and raises his brows. “You should still be able to play baseball with that bat, not fucking…monster ball or whatever.”
Steve laughs a little, folding his hands between his legs and staring at them. “Well, I guess Nancy would be the one playing baseball with it, but yeah. It really puts things into perspective when you have to keep your trunk stocked to fight monsters instead of filling it with the alcohol you don’t want your dad to find.”
They’re quiet for a moment after that, this is more talking than they normally do. Usually, they just watch movies or read books on their own, sitting next to each other. Steve will talk about finding a new job and how the mall coverup is going. Billy will usually sit and listen and not contribute anything. He realizes he must be on the mend if he can have this conversation with Steve.
“Any more questions about our freaky other dimension?” Steve asks, cracking a smile again.
“Nah, think I’m tapped out on the freaky shit for today. You read any good books?”
Steve bends down to dig through his bookbag, holding one out to Billy. “Yeah, I liked this one, it’s science fiction. It’s called The Stars My Destination and I think you would really relate to the main character.”
Billy takes the book and feels his heart settle into place. Steve doesn’t have to protect anyone, but Billy would let him. If he asked.

Fool’s Rush In
Chapter 17
Tumblr media
This is my @wackydrabbles post for week 87. The prompt is bolded. "No offense, but I'm not interested."
Book: TRR
Pairing: Liam x Riley
Warnings: Drake and some language.
*I was in a silly mood and this turned into a dumpster fire lol and it feels very rushed but I was trying to meet the word count. There may be a little bit of plot in this.
Word count: 1999
------------------------
Liam sat on the floor with his back pressed against the mattress; one leg bent upright with the other extended crookedly out in front of him. Half of a bottle of Don Julio dangled loosely from a hand settled on his knee while two shiny gold rings encircled the pinky tip of his other.
In a fit of anger late last night, he searched for and consumed the first bottle of alcohol he came across in the liquor cabinet. He had no intentions of getting hammered or even a little drunk; Liam just needed something to take the edge off the hurt. Not that he for one second believed a word Riley told him before she walked out and boarded a red-eye commercial flight back to the States.
As Liam pondered her abrupt departure in the early hours of the morning, one thing was for sure: He'd never been in love before, but what he felt for Riley was real -- and reciprocated -- that, "no," she spewed from her mouth when asked if she loved him was a lie.
But why? That was the question he just couldn't figure out.
Having racked his brain for hours and with the sun finally coloring in the darkness of his chambers, Liam set aside his drink and lifted himself off the ground. Every thought that consumed him for the last several hours was riddled with putting the pieces together of why she actually left and why she felt she couldn't tell him the truth. Nothing made sense, yet ruminating alone in his room until he figured it out wasn't going to solve anything; the only way to get to the bottom of this was to retrace Riley's steps from the time she left the ball to when he made his way up to join her a little later.
Stumbling to the bathroom -- mostly from exhaustion and perhaps a little drunker than he realized -- Liam stripped off the tuxedo he wore the prior evening and took a quick shower before heading down to the security office.
-----------
Riley's heavily drooping eyelids popped wide open when the plane shook from another vigorous tremor of turbulence. Gripping the armrests on both sides of her seat, she hesitated to peek out the window but was relieved when she saw the billowy waters of the Pacific had transformed into small, mosaic blocks of land covered by a shadow of the nearly setting sun.
When the aircraft settled again, Riley reached into her purse and pulled out her cell phone to check the time, grateful to be landing soon. She planned to go straight home, sink into her bed, and sleep the rest of her life away. Maybe wake up every once in a while to sob again before going back to sleep. Whatever Riley decided to do, she hated Madeleine, she hated Tyler, and she hated telling Liam she didn't love him; the more Riley thought about the stunned look on his face when she said it, the more nauseous her stomach felt.
And the nausea was getting worse.
Riley caught the eye of a nearby stewardess and waved her over; she needed ginger ale, and she needed it fast.
"Can I help you, Miss?"
"I … I need, ginger ale, please." She asked through ragged breaths.
"Let me check and see if we have more." Riley nodded appreciatively.
"Hey. Don't I know you from somewhere?" A relatively large guy in the center seat, whose sweaty arm flab had been lodged in Riley's shoulder since takeoff, asked. Oh shit! Riley cupped a tight hand over her mouth and shook her head vigorously; the last thing she wanted was to be recognized.
Or vomit.
While the stewardess searched the service cart for the requested drink, the gentleman's eyes enlarged. "Wait a minute. Yeah! You're that little gal who married some king, with ..." he snapped his fingers before adding in his thick Texan drawl, "the monkey and hookers and shit. Wow, my fiance wants to have a wedding just like yours." He held his hand out to her. "The names Beaver Calhoun, mayor of Slippery Nip, Texas. I guess you could say we're both royals, huh?"
Riley lowered her hand slightly; she was past the point of ginger ale helping, and this guy was blocking her way out. "Beaver, I need you to move."
He stroked his chin in thought. "Well, I don't know, Queenie. I'm pretty content with my life there in Slippery Nip, Not really lookin' to uproot."
"No!' Riley's strained voice responded forcefully, "move out of the way--" She tried to fight it, but her head flung forward and everything came out with her last word.
Beaver looked down at his shirt and quirked a brow. "That's gonna leave a stain."
=============
On the second floor of a run-down Motel 6, just off the beaten path in Las Vegas, Drake tossed in the last of his clothes and airline tickets in a duffle bag and zipped it. Stepping over to the window, he pulled aside the tattered curtains to check if the airport's shuttle van had arrived yet. Disappointed, he grumbled to himself, "Where the hell are you? I'm ready to get the fuck out of here."
The past week had been intense -- well, frankly, the entire month had been nothing short of shit balls. Five weeks ago, Drake landed in Las Vegas for Liam's bachelor party and won big money at the casino, only to have it all pissed away on some old, decrepit hooker who stole his wallet, cell phone, dick health, and what little joy he had in the world. Liam left with a sexy ass wife, and all Drake got was the false claim of fathering triplets and his scowling face on the front cover of the National Enquirer with Dr. Ethan Ramsey detailing the entire sordid journey from pre-surgical rooster rot to the aftercare.
He made a quick $500 for the story, in which he badly needed the money, considering he couldn't leave Vegas until the paternity test results came back. It was enough for his lodging, a couple cans of Beenie-Weenies and a few boxes of pepperoni Hot Pockets; his stomach felt like oil sludge at this point. But as a joke, Leo had sent a box of Ding-Dongs, so it wasn't all bad.
The rotary phone in his room rang out, and he answered the call from the front desk, which let him know transportation had arrived. Drake grabbed his bag, flicked a cockroach off of it, and exited his room into the enclosed hallway.
After stepping onto the elevator and hitting the down button, another person strolled on in a black leather mini-skirt, white see-through halter top, and a pair of fishnet stockings that he'd recognize anywhere.
"You!" He growled at the chain-smoking hooker, backing her up into the corner. "Do you have any fucking idea what you did to me? And I WANT my wallet and cell phone back, now!" He hovered menacingly over the much smaller woman.
"No offense, but I'm not interested in giving them back to you," Pinquee Kittee sneered before reaching into her bra for mace and spraying him directly in the eyes. The rapid burn gave way to her next act of defense when a screaming, blinded Drake was doubled over by a swift karate kick to his newly transplanted organ. "Hiiiiyah!"
Drake cupped himself in anguish, fell to the floor, and slumped over as the elevator doors opened. Pinquee Kittee grabbed his duffle bag and peeked down the hallway to make sure no one was around before making her getaway.
------------------
Just outside of the palace's security office, Liam knocked on the door several times without an answer. It was rare that the King would personally pay a visit. Usually, he would call Bastien and have the head guard look into any issues. With him gone, this just felt like something Liam needed to do in person.
After several more knocks, Liam reached for the door handle and slowly opened it to let himself inside. The lights were off, with only a few CCTV screens displaying various images of places within and surrounding the palace. Finding the light switch on the wall beside the door, Liam flipped them on, and his mouth fell agape at what he saw.
"What the hell happened in here?" He shouted as his hands shot to his hips, glaring around the room.
On the floor was a maze of beer cans, whiskey bottles, remnants of silly string, a five-gallon bucket of butter next to a slip-n-slide, a voodoo doll with Liam's face on it, and half-a-dozen guards passed out.
A furious Liam made his way through, kicking the feet of guardsmen as he stepped along. "Get up! All of you!"
One-by-one, they slowly roused until they realized it was the King in their presence, then they jumped to their feet at attention.
"Would someone like to explain what the actual fuck happened in here?" Liam wasn't one to swear in front of his staff, but there was no way he could hold back after walking in on this scene. His glowering eyes shifted with expectancy from one man to the next, waiting for an answer, until someone finally called out, "We threw Rogers a going away party for his last night on the job, Your Majesty."
"And you thought having a wild party while you were ON DUTY to protect 400 members of the nobility for a major event was the time to do that?
The guard shook his head. "Not at all, Sir. I admit we weren't as attentive as we should have been last night ..." he pointed behind Liam, "but Prince Leo came by and suggested we kick it up a notch."
Liam turned around and caught Leo slithering along the edge of the wall toward the door. "Leo!"
The Prince stopped dead in his tracks, then flickered his eyes and jolted his body as if he were just waking up. Leo looked at Liam, acting surprised to see him. "Liam? Is that you? H-How did I get in here?"
Liam rolled his eyes. "Knock it off, Leo."
"What?” Leo shrugged innocently. “You know what I think happened. I must have been sleepwalking again. You know how I get when I watch The Duchess before bed." He cocked his head introspectively at his brother. “And you do look like the Duke from that movie, you handsome devil you?” He grinned impishly.
Liam stared blankly at his older brother for a few seconds, then turned around to face the others gathered around. "Who's in charge here?"
When one of the men raised a hand, the King stepped up to him and explained, "Alright, I need you to pull up security footage from last night. I want to review everything from the moment I stepped outside the ballroom to meet the Queen around 9:30, and where she went after I went back into the ballroom."
If this were any other day, Liam would have fired every one of them on the spot and sent Leo to Antarctica, but he only had one concern: Finding out what happened to Riley.
As the guard typed in his computer to pull up footage from last night, Leo stepped up to Liam, who was hovering over the guard's shoulder with anticipation. "What's going on?"
Never taking his eyes off the screen, he responded. "Riley went back to Las Vegas last night."
"Wh-Why? What happened?"
Liam let out a breath. "That's what I'm trying to find out."
Leo remained silent before giving his little brother's shoulder a reassuring squeeze and watching with him.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary as different camera footages were switched to follow Riley walking from the main staircase, through several passages, and finally ending with the corridor outside of his quarters.
"Stop!" Liam leaned in closer as the guard paused the video; his entire body tensed up at what he saw.
"Is that ..." Leo scrunched up his face in disgust.
"Madeleine."

<Chapter 9 | Chapter 11>
(There’s probably a lot of errors, but I just translated real quick because there’s been ages since I updated.)
—-
C H A P T E R   T E N
They walked through the snow that lazily melted. Their footprints showed the path they passed through towards the frozen river. Of course, no one could erase the footprints so the maximum they could do was to speed up the pace so they wouldn't get caught.
“Come on, humans! While we are young!’ yelled Mr. Beaver, who went ahead to show them the way.
“If he rushes us again...” Peter said, bending so Lucy could jump on his back. “I'll make him into a very cute hat.”
Susan let out a quiet laugh.
“Quick! Come on!” cried the Beaver, a few meters in front of others.
“He's getting bossy!” said Lucy.
“No!” cried Mrs. Beaver. ”Look behind you! It's her!”
They looked and saw a few meters away, a carriage that glided easily through the snow. Lucy jumped off Peter's back and they all ran.
“Run!” cried Mr. Beaver.
They heard the reindeer hooves getting closer and closer and knew it wasn’t a good thing. They ran across the snowy field and came to the edge of a forest, where they spotted a small cave between the roots of a tree. They saw the snow fall slightly to his feet only when they saw a big fat shadow walk close to the rock where they were hidden behind. They could see the person's shadow reflected in a snowy dune in front of them. They saw the shadow moving away, almost giving up.
They looked at the dune curiously while the beaver sniffed the air in a desperate manner.
“It seems...” whispered Lucy. “That it’s gone.”
“I better go see it.” said Peter, about to come out of hiding.
“You will not serve Narnia dead.” said the Beaver, turning to the opening.
“And neither do you, old man.” said Mrs. Beaver.
“Thank you darling.”
That being said, the Beaver got out of hide, sniffing and crawling to find out if they were gone or not. There were moments of tension between those present. Suddenly, the beaver appears on the edge of the rock, causing Lucy to cry out.
“Get out! Get out!” said the Beaver. “I hope you’ve been nice, because you have a visitor!” And then left.
They came out of hiding, a little afraid. In front of them was a fat man with a white beard. He wore a wine red cloak over ordinary red.
The man laughed.
“Merry Christmas, sir.” said Lucy, approaching.
“For sure, Lucy.” He said, his voice hoarse. “Ever since you arrived.”
“ Look, I can take a lot of things since I arrived...” Susan said to Peter. “But this!”
“We thought you were the Witch!” interrupted Peter, addressing the man.
“I'm sorry, sorry for the bad way, but I must say that I've been driving one of these for longer than the Witch.” He said, referring to the carriage.
“I thought there was no Christmas in Narnia.” said Susan, also approaching him.
“No.” the man replied. “Not for a long time. But the hope you have brought, Your Majesties... it begins to weaken the Witch' power. However, I dare say you might need these.”
He turned and took a big red bag from the sled .
“Gifts!” said Lucy, excited.
The man opened the bag, revealing boxes, teddy bears and many other things. He took out a small dagger sheath and a flask with a dark liquid.
“The juice of the fire flower.” he said, showing them the vial. “A single drop heals any wound.”
He handed the vial carefully to Lucy, who studied it carefully.
“Although I hope you never use it...” he said, handing her the red scabbard that contained a small dagger.
“Thank you, sir, but...” said Lucy. “I wouldn't be able to not be afraid.”
“I bet you would.” he replied. “But battles are ugly fights.”
Lucy nodded and walked away. The man picked up a basket of arrows with an ornate bow.
“Susan.” and called her and Susan approached. “Trust this bow. It will almost never go wrong.”
Susan took the bow.
“But didn't you say that battles are ugly fights?” she asked.
He laughed.
“Although I have no trouble expressing myself...” he said, showing her a small white trumpet. “blow this, and wherever you are the help will come.”
“Thanks.” she said.
The man turned and took a sheath from a large sword.
“Peter.”
The boy approached, afraid.
“The time to use this may be close.” said the man, handing him a sword and a shield.
Peter drew his sword and they all could see that there was something written on the blade.
“Thank you sir.” said Peter analysing it.
“They're guns, not toys. Use it well and wisely. Now I need to go. Winter is the almost at the end...” he said, turning to the big bag into the sleigh. “and everything accumulates when you disappear for a hundred years.”
He turned to everyone and said, before getting on the sled.
“Long live Aslam! And Merry Christmas!”
And he was gone, while everyone shouted different farewells.
“I said he was real!” said Lucy, turning to Susan.
“He said that winter...” said Pedro. “it's almost over.” and turned concerned to the girls and the beavers. “Didn't you notice?!”
When the girls looked at him confused, he continued.
“No more ice.”
~ * ~
Y/N ran like never before. She heard the howling of the wolves behind her. She could almost be sure that they would surround her from the front too, but didn't have much time left. She could try a spell, but that would only slow them down a bit. She could fight, but there were too many and they would surely defeat her. She needed a more complete plan. Then, while running through the forest, trying to lose them, she finally looked at the trees. Of course! The trees! She could hide in the trees for a while, until she was sure the wolves were far away.
Then, without warning, she brought up an extensive wall of ice in the snow between her and the wolves. And while they were thinking about how to overcome the obstacle, she quickly climbed a tree, a little further away. She used a spell to hide her scent and make it seem like she continued running. When the wolves came around the ice wall, they moved on without noticing Y/N's location. When she was sure that the howls were gone in the distance, she descended from the tree and continued her walk towards the frozen river. She knew that there would be the best way to go towards the Stone Table. She just didn't think she would see a shocking scene before that.
Several meters ahead of her, near the frozen waterfall, was the three Pevensie with the beavers, surrounded by the wolves that chased her on both sides. And their voices were propagated to her.
“Go while you can.” said the wolf, approaching them and forcing them to join closer to the liquid water. “and your sister goes with you.”
“Stop, Peter!” shouted Susan above the noise of the ice breaking. “Better do what he says!”
“Smart girl.” said the wolf.
“Don't believe him!” shouted the beaver, struggling. “Kill him! Kill him now!”
Y/N looked around uneasily. She knew that Maugrin was lying, but wouldn’t be able to reach them time. She would be caught by the wolves before that. But she needed to do something to help them. Next to her there wasn’t much she could use, but then she returned her gaze to the discussion the just a few meters away from the frozen waterfall. The waterfall!
“Oh, please, that war isn’t yours!” Said the wolf, getting closer. “My queen just wants the good of your family and they disappear.”
“Look, just because a man in red handed you a sword, you can’t pretend you’re a hero!” Susana said. “Put it down!”
“No , Peter!” cried the beaver. “Narnia needs you! Kill him while you still have a chance!”
Y/N quickly gathered the snow that was on the banks of the river and transformed it into an bow of ice. She also made some arrows of ice and aimed right at the waterfall, at its weakest point. Ice and snow were her specialty, so even from afar, she could make out the weakest part that had been frozen. She lauched five arrows in that point, which went unnoticed by all.
“How will it be, Son of Adam?” asked the wolf, near Peter's sword. “I won’t wait forever. Neither will the river!”
Y/N threw her bow and arrow in the floor, and it quickly returned to snow. She concentrated on the crack she had made in the waterfall. Melting the ice was far more difficult than forming it, but she always did it anyway. This time, however, instead of helping, the adrenaline was holding her back. Then she gave up trying to melt the ice, she needed to think about something else. And fast.
Lucy looked at the waterfall. It was collapsing.
“Oh no!” She murmured to herself and then shouted. “Peter!”
Y/N then had an idea. She stared at the frozen waterfall, that was starting to crack, and the extended her hands in front of her.
Peter looked desperately for the next safe thing to do.
“Hold on to me!” He shouted.
With a sudden movement, Y/N pulled her arms away, and the waterfall came down.

[Don't Starve/DST tips for beginner players]
1. CHARACTER CHOOSING
The character you play plays a big role in the game, as they're not just for aesthetic, each character has ups and downs and as a beginner you should choose the most neutral characters before you get a handle of the game. In singleplayer Don't Starve you can only unlock new characters with XP, but in DST you have all of them available to you, so choose wisely. Here's a small guide on each character:
Wilson: he's the starting character, so naturally he's the most neutral one. He doesn't really have pros or cons, he just grows a pretty cool beard.
Willow: the firestarter. She's my main so I have a lot to say. Willow is a good character, although her sanity is low she's very useful. In regular Don't Starve she spawns with a lighter, but in Don't Starve together she spawns with a lighter and Bernie, her bear. Willow's sanity goes up if she picks flowers, like normal players, but she also gets more sanity when she's around fire or when she burns things, so when her sanity is low you might want to leave base or not walk around forests because she can start a fire. The sanity gain with fire improves during the day. She's also really useful because in DST when she's insane she can put Bernie on the floor and he'll become a huge bear and fight monsters for her. This is all amazing but as I said she loves fire, so she hates cold, and winter is especially hard for her. She can freeze quicker and it's really annoying and it's hard to do anything that involves not being around warm fire, so if you're a new player I don't really recommend playing Willow at first because winter is already hard as it is. This being said, during summer she's also more resistant to heat strokes than other characters, and she also doesn't take fire damage unlike other characters.
Wolfgang: Wolfgang has great stats and he's really strong, but you have to be constantly feeding him or else he'll get weak. Also he's 'afraid of monsters', which means his sanity drains quicker than other characters when he's around hostile mobs.
Wendy: Wendy is someone I recommend to new players, because although her stats aren't the best, and although she doesn't hit very hard, she comes with Abigail. Abigail is her dead sister that you can spawn from the flower Wendy carries, and Abigail is useful because she can fight for you. Most mobs in Don't Starve use close range and with Abigail you can use long range which is very useful. Just make sure you don't get hit because Wendy's HP isn't the best.
WX78: it's a bit of a shit character if you ask me. Definitely don't play this one. When he gets hit by lighting he gets charged up and can be a light source + walk faster, but he only eats gears (which are hard to get on their own) and he gets rusty if it rains, I honestly don't like him.
Wickerbottom: I don't have much experience on her, she's really smart and she comes with an extra crafting tab that allows her to craft books which she can use to spawn stuff. It's useful but I don't have much insight on her.
Woodie: I play him a lot in DST, and he's really great overall. He comes with an axe (Lucy) that is infinite (it doesn't wear out like other axes) and he can chop trees down really quickly. However during full moon he can turn into a Goose (runs fast), into a Moose (attacks with force) or into a Beaver (can chop trees faster and without an axe), but when he comes back to being Woodie he will be hungry (hunger will be at 0) so you have to make sure you have food around.
Wes: garbage.
Maxwell: He can create shadows to fight for him, chop for him, etc... But for every shadow he permanently looses HP (which means that, for example, if his HP sits at 150 max, when he makes a shadow the max will be 120HP). It's useful but you have to be careful not to take any damage, and as a new player that might be hard.
Wigfrid: She's a great fighter, and she's able to craft a helmet (best protection in the game I believe, at least from the regular ones) and a spear which are exclusive to her. However she only eats meat and it can be a little hard for new players as carrots and berries are the easiest food to get.
Webber: he's recently had a rework so he has a couple new things. Webber is a spider, and he can now make them passive, wake them up, and put them to sleep, which is great to farm/harvest stuff. Webber isn't attacked by spiders like other players, but since pigmen are afraid of spiders they will hit Webber as well. Not a terrible character to start with either!
Warly: Warly comes with his own special crockpot and he is a great cook, which means that your hunger heals better when you eat something he made. The downside is that he can't eat anything he didn't make in his crockpot, which can make it a little hard.
Wormwood: I recently bought Hamlet (which is how you get this playable character or DST) and man, my thoughts are divided. He's a good character as he can plant seeds without needing to make crops, however he's extremely flammable (he can't stand too close to a fire), he looses sanity every time he chops a tree or picks a flower ('cause he's a plant and he doesn't like hurting his friends). Something really annoying about him is that he doesn't heal by eating food like other characters, he only heals with the spider glands or with manure (shit). So he's not an ideal character to start with. He does grow a cool flower on his head during spring though.
Winona: She's a really badass character and I really like her. She's a builder, so she can build things other characters can't (like catapults) so she's really effective when it comes to defending the base and helping out against mobs like hounds. However she does lose sanity any time she crafts anything, so it can be a little hard to deal with her.
Wortox: I don't know much about him, but he can teleport and he can also heal players with his magic. If you ask me he's a little overpowered for the game.
Wurt: I don't know much about him and I've never had anyone play him, all I know is that he doesn't get attacked by merman since he's one of them.
Walter: he's a little scout boy that comes with a slingshot and a dog. The dog can grow big and Walter can ride him which is good for fleeing, but after riding for a while the dog will throw him off.
Sorry for not having much on the last 3 but they're fairly recent compared to others and I haven't seen much of them or played them.
Most times during DST people choose characters that help others, so you can help each other and get the most out of the game.
2. SANITY
Sanity plays a big part in this game. You lose sanity by being in the dark, or by fighting mobs. Some characters have special ways of losing sanity, for example, Wormwood loses sanity by picking flowers or chopping trees. How do you fix your sanity? For all characters (except Wormwood) you can get sanity by picking flowers. With 12 flowers you can make a garland in the hat tab and it will slowly restore your sanity. You can also pick green mushrooms and cook them for more sanity. Just like some characters lose sanity in a 'special' way, some characters gain sanity in a special way as well, such as Woodie when he chops trees and Willow when she's near fire or when she sets anything on fire.
If you let your sanity go down you will start seeing shadows, those shadows become real if it goes down enough, and said shadows will start attacking you, which isn't great because they're a lot, so watch out for that.
3. SURVIVING WINTER
Winter is hands down my least favourite season because Im a Willow main :)
What happens during winter? It starts to snow, so players can freeze, deerclops might appear, crops stop growing. The biggest issue with the winter is that food is hard to find. Crops and berries don't grow anymore so what do you do? First of all you will need to find a clockwork before winter. What are clockworks? They're metal mobs that drop gears when you kill them. You need gears to make a fridge, so you can store a lot of food for winter. If you store food in a normal chest it will rot quickly, but in a fridge they last a long time. You should also build a crockpot which is fairly easy, and in a crockpot you can make better food, you can also take nearly rotten food and make it good by cooking it, and you can use 1 stick or 1 monster meat to make good food, as you can't normally eat monster meat 'cause it drains sanity and HP.
What can you do for the cold? You need to find beefalo, and with the shears (which you can craft in the tools) you shave the beefalo, so you can make a winter hat. That hat will help with the cold. You can also make earmuffs, by catching 2 live bunnies and sticks, but the hat isn't hard to make and it's better. MAKE SURE YOU CARRY ENOUGH TO MAKE A FIRE AT ALL TIMES. In case of emergency if you get cold and start dying you need to have something to warm you up. You should also make a thermal stone. It doesn't take a lot and it keeps you warm. (You use the thermal stone by setting it down near the fire and letting it geete warm)
You should also make bird and rabbit traps to get meat during the winter.
Beware of the deerclops, if it appears try to lure it away from your base because it can destroy everything you built. If you want to fight it, make sure you fight it away from your base, but if you don't you can also lure him somewhere else and then run away. The Deerclops will de-spawn after winter is over.
Try not to make your base near the sea 'cause penguins will spawn and they're very fucking annoying + they can destroy your shit.
4. SURVIVING SUMMER
Summer is also very fucking annoying but much less than winter.
What do you need?
Some crops survive, but some of them die, so getting food isn't as annoying to get, but it's still scarce, so you should also try to get as much food as you can during spring time.
You should get ice during winter from the glaciers, and also more gears. Some crops/trees/grass might start to burn during summer, and with gears and ice you can make an ice-fligomatic. The ice flingomatic will throw ice to things when they start burning and will extinguish the fire, so when you come back to your base it's not all in flames.
During the summer you can't stand near fire or you'll die of heatsroke. Remember Nitre? That yellow shit you leave behind after mining rocks because you need inventory space? Yeah you'll need those to build an endothermic fire. It lights up your nights and keeps you cold, however you can't cook in it.
The thermal stone from winter also works during the summer.
Keeping a bunch of ice from winter in your fridge also works. If you eat the ice it will make you colder.
RANDOM TIPS
1. Don't hit pigmen/beefalo when there's many around you. They will gather up and kill you.
2. DO NOT try to kill penguins. They might be easy to kill but not so much when they all gather around and kill you.
3. Always keep armor+spear on you in case hounds start to come and you're not at base.
4. Don't steal tall birds' eggs (blue with white dots). The tall bird is very strong and aggressive and it will follow you for the egg and try to kill you.
5. Don't eat the mushrooms unless 100% necessary. Mushrooms always have a side effect, like they might give you sanity but take HP.
6. You can use mushrooms and monster meat (which you shouldn't eat by themselves) and cook something in a crockpot, thus turning something inedible into something edible.
7. When it rains, more during the Spring than anything else, it might start raining frogs, it's not a bug, that happens. Try to get away from base so they don't swarm there, as they're very annoying.
8. ALWAYS build a lightning rod, during a storm the lightning can hit something and set it on fire, and you don't want your stuff being burned. The lightning rod collects the lightning and protects your base.

This is all I can remember, I am more than happy to answer any questions anyone might have! @atinystray here it is!!

Yes, you fucking dumbass bitch Jensen kisses the people he hates so passionately. Why are you all so mentally handicapped? Or have your brains tied up fat from eating pork?
https://tr.pinterest.com/pin/371265563035467006/
What does pork have to do with anything, you word-salad spewing delusional fuckwit?  I hope someday you actually grow up into a real person instead of a shadow-dwelling creepy fetishizing troll and get to find out what “passionately” actually means and looks like.  With your personality, it’s gonna be a reallllll long shot anybody will ever want to help you with that, but hey, miracles do happen.
By your standards, going by similar videos and images that aren’t photo-shopped:  Jensen also wants to bone Jim Beaver, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Rob Benedict, and Jared.  Meanwhile it would be Misha and Jared that are definitely fucking because there are way way more legit pictures of those two kissing than anybody doing it with Jensen, not even counting the egregious gag reel make out.  But you don’t get off to any of that, so you pretend it doesn’t exist because it shows how absolutely pathetic what you’re fapping to is in context.

A thousand time stronger
Here is the famous Narnia imagine! I had this idea when I watched The Prince Caspian and, as some of you asked me to post it... It’s finally there!
If you have some Narnia requests, don’t hesitate to send them (and if it’s angsty then thank you so much because who doesn’t like some angst?)
Anyway, enjoy!

Our story takes place in a world none of us know. It was a fantastical world, a world most of children would want to visit, or would have wanted to visit during its brightest period. Now, Narnia was nothing more than the shadow of what it used to be, an apparently lifeless world invaded by heartless people. Its Golden Age had ended so many years before, its happy days disappeared in a blow of wind in the same time as the most loved Kings and Queens Narnia ever knew.
Still unaware of what their beloved Narnia had become, in fact, still unaware they even were in Narnia, five kids were playing in the clear water of the sea after a unique experience with Magic. The oldest was Peter, it was a kind boy who wanted nothing more than to protect his siblings, even though he could be a bit strict with them, or some of them to be more precise. The oldest girl was Susan, she was soft and had the irritating habit to talk like their mother. Then came Edmund and Y/N, the twins of the family. During their childhood, they couldn’t have been more different - Edmund was as mocking and vicious as Y/N was introvert and unsure of herself. However, they were now like the two sides of a coin, they knew each other perfectly and were inseparable. The youngest was Lucy, a little girl with a big heart and a contagious smile. Together, they had reigned on Narnia during fifteen years, known as Peter the Magnificent, Susan the Gentle, Edmund the Just, Y/N the Brave and Lucy the Valiant, before being thrown again in the house of Professor Kirke.
After a year of dreaming of it, and even if our heroes didn’t know it yet, they were back at Narnia. But if they hadn’t changed a lot - they were only a bit taller and the girls’ hair were longer - their beloved land wasn’t the same. In fact, it was so different that they didn’t recognized the beach they had contemplated during fifteen years.
“Where do you think we are?” finally asked Edmund with his hand above his eyes to protect himself from the burning sun.
“I thought you were more intelligent than that, Ed.” laughed Y/N. “Where do you think we can possibly be?”
“It’s Narnia, you silly.” replied Peter.
“I didn’t remember these ruins…” muttered Edmund.
And indeed, when they looked up, his siblings saw ruins at the top of the cliff in front of them. It was the first witness of the past splendor of the place, only a few stones carrying the wealth of their history. All intrigued by this mystery, they ventured in the woods that led to the old castle and, enjoying the shadow provided by the trees that were definitely calm, they began to explore. Suddenly, and as usual in these situations in which her elders lacked of imagination, Lucy understood where they were. She placed her siblings in front of the little piles of rocks that had once been thrones.
“Imagine columns, and a roof made of glass.” she said. “This is Cair Paravel!”
The joy had been quite short, because this realization was accompanied by another one, much more worrying and even sad.
“It can’t have been that long.” murmured Y/N.
“It can, remember the time isn’t the same in here.” replied Susan.
“You know what it means?” If her smile was contagious, Lucy’s tears were too. “All our friends… Mr Tumnus, Mr and Mrs Beaver… They are gone.”
After a few minutes of silence, the time for the Pevensies to process these news, these decided to continue their exploration. Now that they knew where they were, it was much easier to get their bearings.
“Oh, I didn’t remember this corridor!” said Lucy as she walked between two stone lines.
“Look, this is the orchard!” exclaimed Edmund.
“Come here!” shouted Peter. “Remember this door?”
“The Treasure Room?” asked Susan. “I hope it’s intact!”
And intact it was, with all the treasures they remembered and the ones they had forgotten. At the end of the room aligned five massive trunks. Lucy precipitately opened hers to find her dagger and her Cordial. She also showed Susan a dress she had worn when she was an adult. She was amazed at the size. After the most adult answer Susan could have given her (“That’s because you were taller!”), Edmund and Y/N exchanged an amused look and opened theirs in the same movement. The first thing Y/N saw in her trunk was her sword. She grabbed it, not fearing a second the rust, and drew it. The blade was still as perfect as the last time she had seen it, with all the engravings retracing all the battles she had won alongside Edmund, Peter and sometimes Lucy. A nostalgic sigh escaped her lips when she gently passed her thumb on the oldest engraving. Battle of Beruna. She could remember it as perfectly as if it had happened the day before, the blood rushing in her head, the adrenaline when the two sides had met, the sickening fear when Edmund had been injured, the anger and desire of revenge she had felt just after. It had marked the beginning of the happiest era of her life, for sure.
During the following hours, all the Pevensie siblings began to feel more like the Kings and Queens they had been, and less like the children that had just left England. And with that, the tensions between Y/N and Peter became more and more present. For a long time, Peter had been really hard with the twins, always reprimanding them as soon as he had the occasion. Susan was also like this. Things had changed with Edmund after the Battle of Beruna, when he had been hurt and Peter had thought he would lose him. Since this day, he had been less on his nerves with him, and slightly less with Y/N too, but it was nothing comparable. When they had come back in England and left for school, they hadn’t seen each other a lot and it hadn’t been a problem. But as they were walking in the woods to find Prince Caspian, Y/N was feeling like she would scream just to get this out of her. The way Peter was giving orders around, the way he was holding his head a bit higher than needed, it was really irritating and not really respectful for Trumpkin the dwarf.
The little group finally reached the camp where Caspian was with the Old Narnians. After the presentations, Y/N decided to explore the surroundings and left Edmund and Peter to their council to follow Lucy and Susan. Together, they wandered between fauns, dwarfs and all types of animals. They were sharpening blades or chatting, but it gave the girls all sort of memories.
“What three girls like you are doing here?”
It was a little faun, apparently really young.
“We’re just walking around.” said Lucy.
“Oh, Lucy, look!” exclaimed Y/N, who hadn’t really paid attention to the faun. “Are they mice?”
Indeed, twelve mice were proudly walking toward the mound.
“Lucy?” repeated the faun. “Are you… Are you the Queens? Queen Lucy, Queen Susan and Queen Y/N?”
“Absolutely.” approved Y/N.
The little faun’s eyes became round, and he didn’t lose a second before rushing to the first friend of his he saw, exclaiming with big moves the Old Kings and Queens were here. Soon, a crowd formed around the girls and Y/N, who hated all this royal attention, managed to escape and joined Edmund, Peter and Caspian in the mound.
The ambience was way more tensed in there, and soon, Y/N learned that the actual king, Miraz, was Caspian’s uncle and an usurpator. His army was here, ready to defeat Caspian’s and kill his nephew. They knew Aslan was the only one that could offer them a victory, but they needed time.
“A duel.” finally proposed Peter. “A duel that will end with the death of one of us. Either Miraz or me.”
No one found a better idea and an order was immediately written. Peter handed it to Edmund, and Y/N followed him outside. The twins joined the camp of the enemy and the crowd of Telmarine soldiers opened in front of them. They glared at the two Narnians and whispered on their passage.
“Are they the famous twins? The ones deemed to be invincible if they fight together?”
“I had never seen a girl with a sword…”
“They don’t seem that dangerous.”
“You kidding?”
To be fair, seeing them walking that calmly in the middle of the enemies, shining in their armours perfectly polished, was simply impressive. Edmund was slightly in front of Y/N, one of his hands holding the parchment and the other firmly gripping his belt. Y/N had grabbed casually the guard of her sword. Their faces matched with a determined look visible only in times of war, and the only thing that disturbed the calmness they had imposed themselves was the nervous habit Y/N had always had: her jaw clenched compulsively.
Edmund and Y/N didn’t answer the whispers around them, they only straightened a bit their back and kept walking at a steady pace toward the tent in the middle of the camp. The fabric was richly embroidered with gold thread, which didn’t leave a doubt about the comfort Miraz used to live in. The twins eventually reached the entrance of the tent and the two guards in front of them stepped aside after an order coming from Miraz himself.
After all she had heard about him, Y/N had imagined a terrible man, intimidating with a royal stature which would have helped him keeping the throne of Narnia despite him not being legitime. But in fact, he looked like an usurpator in her opinion. Each of his features showed how perfidious and contemptuous he was. Even Peter didn’t lift his head that high - Miraz seemed to be an arrogant man.
After the usual presentations, which caused the nobles around Miraz to look at Edmund and Y/N both in amusement and disbelief, the discussion eventually came to the duel. Miraz listened to Edmund as he read the order while Y/N watched carefully at each person present in the tent. None of them inspired her trust and she had the unpleasant impression that no matter which arrangement was adopted, it wouldn’t be respected by the Telmarines.
After a sign of the usurpator, Edmund and Y/N left the tent to let him the time to think about his decision.
“Tell me again, why do we think they’ll respect our engagement?” asked Y/N.
“I know.” replied Edmund. “I don’t trust them either. But we need time, we need to keep them busy until-”
“Until Aslan is ready to help us, I know.”
A silence followed, during which both imagined how bad things could go if they were betrayed. Of course, none of them would have said it out loud, and that for two reasons. The first was that they didn’t need words to communicate. One look, one gesture was enough for them to understand the other. The second reason was that they were too worried and didn’t want to worry more the other. It had always been kinda like this, but this overprotectiveness had reached its peaks during their first time in Narnia, when Edmund had left alone to find the White Witch. Y/N knew something was wrong, and she knew her twin wouldn’t have let her alone like this without a good reason. She had defended him in front of Peter and Susan, Lucy being too kind and too young to blame him, and it was from this moment that her relation with Peter had become worse. When Edmund had finally been rescued, when he had seen by himself how worried Y/N had been, he had sworn he would do anything for her not to be worried anymore. When she had seen how distraught her dear Ed was, Y/N had sworn the same thing. Of course, they had forgotten they could read each other like an open book, and they just lost the habit to formulate their fears with words.
Maybe seeing the twins silent had given the Telmarines the courage to approach, fact is that they began to laugh just under their nose.
“I’ve always said that a lady with something cutting in the hands is the most stupid thing that can happen.”
The soldier who had said that was a tall man with a mocking grin. Apparently proud of his intervention, he elbowed the man next to him who laughed. The Pevensies couldn’t know that, but the second man had a painful memory of his wife threatening him with a knife while she was slicing the meat for the diner and tripping at his feet, cutting his arm in passage.
“Or the most dangerous.” replicated Edmund, who was particularly proud of his sister.
“Is it true that you’re two of the best swordsmen of your time?” asked a young soldier. He seemed more impressed than the others.
“Maybe you can show us!” It was the first soldier. Y/N rolled her eyes and Edmund shook his head.
“No offense boy, but I really would like to see your sister in action.”
Maybe he had heard enough stories to know Y/N was easy to provoke, fact is that the solder touched the reckless part of her and despite Edmund muttering it wasn’t a good idea, Y/N got up and drew her sword.
“You want to see me fight?” she asked. “Fine. Attack me.”
The three men were less proud now that a crowd was forming around them.
“Come on Y/N, don’t play with them and do it quick, we don’t have all day!” shouted Edmund.
No sooner said than done, in only a few movements no one saw precisely, except Edmund who had seen her fight a thousand times, Y/N had won the fight. The three soldiers were on the ground with their mouths wide open. Edmund snickered and shook his head when his twin complained about how easy it had been. However, his attitude changed immediately when one of the soldiers, the one who had provoked Y/N, got up silently and readied to attack her by behind. One look at his brother warned her and she turned around at the speed of light to grab the collar of his chainmail and position his own sword under his chin.
“Don’t ever do that again.” she hissed.
The soldier was simply terrified, and that was understandable: he had in front of him Y/N Pevensie, a dangerous girl whose reputation had traveled the ages, who was known by every Narnian like the most skilled swordswoman of history, and who formed with Edmund (who was now standing behind her) an invincible duo. Y/N eventually let go of him and tiptoed to watch him in the eyes.
“If I were you, I would pray to not cross me during a battle, or else you’re dead.”
And she gave him her back to sit back on the tree stump she was initially on. The crowd quickly dispersed, and no one noticed the humiliated soldier rushing in the tent. Roughly five minutes later, Miraz got out and walked directly toward Edmund and Y/N who stood up even though they didn’t respect this man at all.
“Does it amuse you to play with my soldiers?”
This question full of contempt was for Y/N, and the girl felt her blood boiling. She could practically feel Edmund’s warning radiating behind her and, at the cost of a great effort, she relaxed.
“Your soldiers wanted to see me fight.” she replied. “I couldn’t deny them this honour.”
This was maybe her biggest flaw. Y/N, in the very same way as Edmund, was someone very sarcastic and was simply unable to measure when sarcasm was allowed and when it wasn’t. Useless to precise right now, it absolutely wasn’t.
“I don’t think they’ve all had the opportunity to see you,” began Miraz, “and I didn’t have either. I accept the duel against your brother with the condition that you fight against twenty of my best soldiers. If you win, the duel will take place. If you lose, your brothers, sisters and Caspian will die. If you don’t accept, my army will attack yours when the Sun will be at its zenith. Now, if you need me, I’ll be in my tent.”
And Miraz left, persuaded he had found the way to get rid of all of his enemies. A long silence took place between Edmund and Y/N, the first one fearing his sister’s decision and the latter regretting bitterly her behavior. Unconsciously, they had both glanced at the Sun, but they knew it was still early in the morning. Now, all that they had to do was take a decision, and Y/N was on the verge of accepting, after all she was the responsible of this situation, but Edmund took the lead.
“We go back to our camp. Peter will decide what to do.”
“The decision is already taken.” groaned Y/N.
She wasn’t angry at Edmund, of course. She was mentally scolding herself for having been so pretentious and, even though she would never admit it, she was pretty afraid too.
“There’s no way you’ll fight them, Y/N.” said Edmund. “I won’t let you.”
And he left at a quick pace, obliging Y/N to follow him. They gained back their camp in a total silence, where they found Peter and Caspian discussing strategies with Trumpkin and Cornelius. When he saw his siblings’ expressions, both matching in a mix of fear and anger, Peter immediately understood something had gone wrong.
“Where are Susan and Lucy?” asked Y/N.
“Gone.” replied Peter. “What happened? He didn’t accept?”
Edmund glared at Y/N, and even though Peter knew it wasn’t actual anger, it still was so unusual that he began to imagine the worst things that could happen. Above all, Edmund seemed decided to let his twin talk on her own.
“No! He accepted… Well, kinda.” muttered Y/N.
“Kinda? Tell me what happened.” Now, Peter was beginning to worry too.
“He’ll fight with you if I beat his twenty best soldiers in a round.”
She had talked so low that Peter wasn’t sure he had heard correctly. Y/N explained how it had happened, how the three soldiers had provoked her and how she had effortlessly beaten them. Then she added in a small voice that all of their lives were on her. At this point, Peter was pacing and, if Y/N had had the same connexion with him that she had with Edmund, she would have seen he wasn’t angry either but worried sick. But she didn’t know, and the shame made her keep her head down.
“You won’t let her fight, right?” asked Edmund.
Peter stayed silent, trying his best to imagine how things could go if they were attacked a few hours later. Of course he didn’t want to let his little sister fight, but he had a big responsibility on him and feelings couldn’t be good.
“You can’t forbid me.”
Y/N had gained her courage back and was decided to assume her mistake. There was no way everyone would be thrown in a battle lost in advance if she could prevent it. And at this moment, she was sure she could beat these soldiers and she wasn’t worried for her siblings’ life, along with Caspian’s one.
“Everyone, out.” said Peter with his autoritary voice.
Everyone left, the last being Edmund who refused to let this decision be taken without him and had to be dragged by Caspian.
“Peter I swear you better take the good decision!” he screamed just before disappearing after a particularly violent push from Caspian.
A long silence took place in the mound. Peter was still pacing and Y/N, waiting not so patiently for his decision. After a few minutes, Peter felt observed and he glanced at his sister.
“Don’t look at me like this Y/N. You won’t fight.”
“You can’t-”
“Yes I can!” shouted Peter. “And if I really need to use this argument; then I’ll do it: I am the High King and you have to obey me.”
It was all he shouldn’t have said, because it put Y/N in such an anger that she rushed toward him and stopped a few centimeters only from him.
“You may have been the High King,” she hissed, “but I have been a Queen. I have never let anyone give me orders and I won’t start today. Whether Ed likes it or not, whether you like it or not, I will fight. I made a mistake and I have to make up for it, that’s all.”
“And if you’re killed?” Peter was getting crazy. How could he make her understand how much he wanted her to be safe?
“Then I hope you’ll be smart enough to not be killed on the spot.” For a split second, her voice shook and Y/N prayed for Peter not to have heard it. But he had, and it had made his heart sting. “But it doesn’t matter. I won’t lose.”
“You can’t know that!” he exclaimed. “You see, you’re not mature enough to be involved in all of this! You never think, you-”
“It’s not a question of maturity Peter! I do not have the choice, it’s different. Don’t think one second I’ll let you die…” she added with a lowest voice.
“And you don’t have to die either. If we let him attack-”
“That’s exactly what we wanted to avoid! If we let Miraz attack, then we’re dead. All of us. You said it yourself. We can’t count on Aslan, that’s why we need to gain time. And this time, I’ll gain it for you.”
With that, Y/N left without waiting for his answer. The fact is that Peter knew she was right, but he wasn’t ready to let her risk her life. He had always been especially hard on her, but he loved her with every fiber of his heart. If only he could have taken her place, he would have done it without any hesitation, but Miraz had been clear. If Y/N didn’t fight, they were attacked. However, he gained back his senses soon enough to yell “You stay on the camp!” just before murmuring “That’s an order you better follow.”
Of course, Y/N didn’t have any intention to follow this order, not this one after all the ones she had ignored and especially coming from Peter. She was looking for a horse when Edmund grabbed her arm.
“Can I know where you think you’re going?”
“Looking for you.” she lied. “Peter wants to talk to you.”
She had always been unable to lie to Edmund, and the latter saw perfectly through it. He narrowed his eyes, probably ready to tie her in order to keep her safe when, by an exceptional coincidence, Peter’s voice echoed. He was calling for Edmund. The boy reluctantly let go of Y/N’s arm and gave her his back. She knew he would take apart the first faun or minotaur he would see to tell him to watch her, which was why she didn’t have a lot of time. She innocently walked toward the nearest horse and, when she was just next to the animal, she jumped on its back. Unfortunately, Edmund had seen her and immediately shouted her name.
That didn’t stop Y/N and she exhorted her horse to go faster. If all her blood hadn’t rushed in her head blocking every sound around her, she would have heard him screaming her name with a desperation he had never shown or even felt. All she could think was that she had to fight, even if she had to lose her life. It was for her siblings, who she loved more than anything. It was for Caspian, who had proven to be an excellent prince and friend. It was for Narnia, which was her second home.
Y/N reached the enemies’ camp way faster than the first time. She rushed in Miraz’ tent, pushing aside the two guards at its entrance in passing, and only stopped when she was in front of the wooden table. She extended an arm, her eyes fixing the usurpator.
“My brother agreed.”
And they shook hands at the very moment Edmund entered the tent, hit by a wave of pure terror when he couldn’t help but think it could be one of the last times he saw her alive.
The grass under her body was soft, as it had always been in Narnia. It was way more comfortable than the grass of our world, and it gave Y/N the feeling she was lying on a cloud. She was far enough from the camp to only hear the lapping of water that flowed lazily somewhere on her right. She was used of the woods, used of listening carefully each noise, and she immediately heard the steps that came closer and closer to her. She didn’t try to hide, though, because she knew it was Edmund and she wanted nothing more than to see him.
“You should eat something.”
She didn’t answer, not because she wasn’t hungry but because the restraint in his voice was something she had never heard, and for the very first time, she couldn’t understand if Edmund was angry or not.
“Y/N, the meat is cooling down.”
“I’m not hungry.” she said with the most calm voice she could.
“You should-”
“I told you no, Ed!”
Y/N had shouted and immediately regretted it. Edmund sighed and stepped closer. Until then, he had waited standing a few meters away. He let himself fall on the ground and laid just next to Y/N.
“Are you afraid?” he finally asked. Y/N could feel his eyes on her.
“No…” she lied. “Not for me, anyway.” It was a bit more true.
“I am.” Saying Y/N was surprised would be an understatement, and she looked at her twin in disbelief to meet his teary eyes. “I’m afraid to lose you and... and so is Peter.”
“It won’t be the first time I risk my life.”
“It’s different, Y/N.”
She didn’t find anything to reply, and Edmund stayed silent. He had closed his eyes too, and his thought were monopolized by only one thought, or more precisely, one memory: the day, so many years before, when he had been rescued from the Witch’s camp.
Edmund was walking next to Aslan. He had been afraid of the big Lion, afraid that he would think he was the worst traitor he had ever met, and the worst was that Edmund thought he would have been right. The sun was getting down, and illuminated all the camp in a delicate golden colour. Aslan was silent, and all of sudden, a kind of purr could be heard; it was like if it came right from his heart.
“Tell me what you are fearing, Son of Adam.”
Edmund didn’t know what to answer and stayed silent. He feared so much things that he didn’t know which one the Lion wanted to hear, plus, he didn’t want to be seen as a coward.
“Your brother and your sisters won’t blame you forever, don’t worry.” At this moment, Edmund knew Aslan had guessed his worst fear. “You should go and see them.”
Indeed, Y/N, Peter, Susan and Lucy were waiting for him in front of a big tent. Edmund slowly approached them, not completely reassured by the Lion’s words, but Y/N didn’t wait and ran toward him. She threw her arms around him and tightened him almost painfully. She was muttering something under her breath, something only Edmund could have heard if only he wasn’t murmuring himself.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…”
When, after what felt like hours, the twins eventually pulled apart, their eyes met and Edmund’s heart broke a bit when he saw the tears in Y/N’s eyes. At this instant, he swore to himself he would always protect her, whatever the cost.
And protect her he had always tried his best to do. Y/N had become his absolute priority, he wanted to make up for all the tears she had shed because of him. That’s why he had always stayed by her side, in parties and during battles, he had always been there for her and had never really shared his own worries, wanting to take care of Y/N’s first.
The problem was that Y/N had done the exact same thing. From this day when he had finally come back, when she had seen the desperation and infinite shame in his eyes, she had understood Edmund wouldn’t be truly happy until he would finally be able to understand it wasn’t completely his fault, and that no one would hate him for that. She had made a point to always show him she was here no matter what. She had done everything to hide her own problems, considering Edmund’s ones were way more important.
That’s why, without even knowing it, they had developed a silent language between them, one that would reveal each of their fears, each of their wounds, a language that reversed all the efforts they had made to erase themselves.
They stayed silent like this during a quite long time, maybe an hour, and only moved when the sound of a horn echoed. Two short sounds followed by a longer one. It was time.
Y/N found herself like paralyzed, unable to make any move, not even when Edmund got up. He gently grabbed her hand and that helped her getting out of her trance. She got up.
“You still have time to refuse.” he murmured.
“You know I won’t.”
Edmund wanted to roll his eyes but he decided against it, not wanting to do anything that could possibly upset Y/N.
“Yeah, I know. Foolish hope, when you hold us… Come on,” he said while passing an arm around her shoulders, “I will help you to get ready. You will let me help you right?”
“Of course.”
Since the moment she had hurriedly left the camp to go to Miraz’s, Y/N hadn’t seen Peter once. Edmund led her in her tent and helped her putting on her armor, which she had taken off before hiding in the woods. Then he grabbed her sword and give it to her.
“Don’t wanna force you to be violent,” he said with his famous smirk, “but I hope you’ll slice them all.”
He was only pretending to not be terrified, of course.
Outside, both camps were reunited around a square delimited by ropes. To get there, Edmund and Y/N crossed the crowd of old Narnians who solemnly stepped aside on their passage. By now, they all knew what kind of agreement had been done, and they all thought Y/N couldn’t possibly win this.
Peter was waiting for them next to the improvised arena. His jaw was clenched and his arms crossed, but his nervous steps as he paced along the rope showed how worried he was. The twins finally joined him, and Y/N found herself regretting bitterly Lucy and Susan’s absence. She didn’t feel that confident anymore, and she would have wanted to tell them goodbye. On the other hand, if she lost, her sisters would be far enough to hide.
“Ed,” she murmured. Edmund immediately turned his head to look at her. “Can you send someone warn Lucy and Susan?”
Edmund’s jaw clenched and he looked away. After a second, Y/N understood it was because asking him that was like admitting she would lose.
“Please Ed, I just want to be sure they are safe.”
He finally nodded weakly, and both his and Y/N’s gazes followed Peter’s one. Their elder was looking at the twenty men aligned in front of them, most of them tall and broad. Miraz was slowly walking in front of them, giving his back to the Narnians and probably giving his soldiers advices or orders. The usurpator had put on his shiniest armor for the occasion. Suddenly, Peter placed himself in front of Y/N and grabbed her shoulders.
“Listen to me.” He was whispering so that Y/N and Edmund, who had moved closer, were the only one that heard what he was saying. “Miraz thinks brutal strength will be enough to beat you, but you have the advantage of the speed. The best you can do is tiring them until they get slow enough for you to attack without being touched. Okay?”
Y/N nodded and put all her bravery in this small movement. However, all her courage was certainly not a lot as she began to slightly shake. She had a bad feeling about this, something she felt on her blood and her bones. Peter, when he saw how distraught his little sister was, did something he had never done before: he engulfed her in a strong embrace, a bone-crushing hug quite uncomfortable with the armors but oh so warming in their hearts. Y/N wrapped her arms around her brother and tightened him as firmly as she could and, even though none of them said anything, they knew something was definitely different between them. If Susan had been here, she would have smiled tenderly, savouring the first demonstration of love Peter and Y/N had shown to each other in years.
Peter eventually let go of her and softly ruffled her hair.
“You can do that Y/N. I believe in you.”
Then Peter took a few steps backwards and Edmund practically jumped at her neck. He almost choked her to death, but she didn’t say anything because these signs of affection were rare with Edmund and she wanted to enjoy it as long as she could. She expected to see the same look as in the forest, but the determination burning in his eyes almost burnt her too and she felt as ready as she could ever be.
“You can win Y/N.” said Edmund. “You’re the best, you can beat them all without any difficulty.”
Y/N nodded, more firmly this time, and entered the arena. The encouragements of her brothers echoed in her ears, and she felt like she could move mountains.
The first man took a step forward. The fight began.
Y/N was whirling like a dancer, her gestures full of grace as she stroke powerful blows. Her sword shone under the sun, along with her polished armor, her black hair flying around her and forming an aura. Everyone, Narnian or Telmarine, understood Y/N’s reputation in the stories: it seemed like it wasn’t a girl in front of them, but a demon.
The first five guys were beaten rather quickly. Y/N hadn’t been seriously injured, except after the third soldier had hit her head violently; she had staggered a bit but had gained back her senses soon enough to send his head flying. She did as Peter had said: her strategy was to provoke them, forcing them to attack while she just jumped out of their league. However, this strategy had two flaws: first, it was hard for her too, and the fifth soldier had understood. From this point, she didn’t have any other choice than to always take the first attack, and the fights became more fierce and violent than before. The seventh soldier brought her her first serious injury, a long cut at the base of the neck.
When his sword had cut her flesh, Edmund’s heart had almost stopped. YN had taken a few steps back, just the time to evaluate the damages, before jumping on him with a renewed vigour. He had sighed, thanking Aslan she was still alive, and glanced at Peter’s pale face. A scream in the crowd had made him focus again on the fight to see his twin killing the seventh soldier.
Y/N had thought maybe she had a chance. The first soldiers hadn’t been too hard to beat, and she had truly hoped she could get through this. But this hope had vanished a long time ago: the more injuries she got, the closer she saw her death. Her body was aching, every fiber was protesting against her movements. Her muscles were burning, her head was painful both because of the blows and the sun. She was sweating so much that she had to grip her sword harder to not let it fall. Her lungs seemed to be unable to continue bringing air in her body, and after a desperate assault during which she pierced her enemy’s stomach, she fell on her knees and noticed absentmindedly a dagger hidden in his belt.
The fourteenth soldier had already taken a step forward, but in spite of killing her on the spot, he offered her a helpful hand.
“You need some time?”
“Five minutes.” she whispered.
The soldier nodded and helped her getting up. Immediately, she felt two pairs of arms behind her, and when she turned around she met Edmund and Peter’s worried faces. Without losing a second, they half dragged her to their side of the arena and sat her on bench that had been brought here for her. Peter examined her head, constantly rambling about how great she had been and how she could win, while Edmund cleaned the cut of her neck without a word. She noticed his hands were slightly shaking and for a second she felt bad.
“Let me alone, please.” she murmured.
Peter stopped, glanced worriedly at her and left. Edmund hadn’t made a move, yet Y/N had grabbed his wrist to make sure he would stay.
“I wasn’t going to let you.” he said.
“I know.”
They stayed silent a few seconds during which both of them tried to find something to say.
“Ed, I wanted to tell you in case I…” Finishing this sentence was too hard.
“In case you nothing Y/N. You can do it, I know you can.” Edmund looked like he was trying to convince himself. “You won’t die, you hear me? I told you Y/N, I can’t lose you.”
And he hugged her tighter than before, and she hugged him weaker than before because her strength was missing.
“I’m sorry…”
It came in a broken breath, a weak and pathetic sound that yet broke Edmund’s heart. All of sudden, and for the very first time, he was crying, bitter tears rolling on his cheeks as his twin, his second half, gave up on her shell and showed how terrified she was.
“Don’t do that… Don’t do that Y/N, I don’t want…”
“Ed, I need to tell you-”
“No!” he exclaimed. “Why don’t you tell Peter? Why don’t you want to see him? Why do I have to be the only one to hear your apologies? Why do I have to be the only one you say farewell to?”
Y/N wiped a tear from her face. Now, it was clear: the both of them knew she would lose and die.
“Because it will be easier for him that way.” she replied in a whisper.
“And me? Did you- did you think about me? Why don’t you make it easier for me too?”
“I don’t know how to do that, Ed!” cried out Y/N. “But I can’t… Without you, I just- I can’t do that, Ed! If you don’t help me, I won’t be able to go back there and to fight; if you-”
She had stopped so brutally because Edmund had hugged her once more, one last desperate embrace to show her how much he loved her and why she couldn’t possibly lose.
“I love you Y/N.” He murmured in her hair. “You have to come victorious, you don’t have the choice, okay? Promise me.”
“I promise.”
And she got up, a new strength in her, something that felt like desperation but that gave her the impression she could swim beyond the biggest ocean and climb the highest mountain. She walked toward the last seven soldiers but after only a few steps, she vivaciously turned around and ran directly toward Peter. She jumped on him, making him stumble a bit before gaining back his balance and holding tightly his little sister.
“I’m sorry Peter,” she murmured, “so sorry… Please, if I lose, please, don’t let yourself get killed. Protect Ed, Lucy and Susan, and Caspian, and Narnia, Peter, please…”
“Of course Y/N, of course.” he replied. “But you have to promise me you’ll do your best to win, promise you’ll fight like the lioness you are.”
Y/N smiled and nodded.
“Peter, I…” She had never said it to him, but she needed him to know. If she couldn’t keep her promise, Peter had to hear it at least once. “I love you, big brother.”
And Peter, with the heart heavier than it had ever been, kissed lightly her hair.
“I love you too, little sister.”
Y/N eventually let go of Peter, exchanged a last glance with Edmund, and gained back her place in the middle of the arena. The last seven soldiers were in front of her, all of them looking more impressive than the others. The girl had the terrible impression to be in one of these apocalyptic scenes you can see in the movies. She was facing her enemy, all alone and looking so insignifiant, surrounded by thirteen lifeless bodies, her steps in blood rivers printed on the ground.
She was ready to attack as soon as the signal would be given, but she certainly didn’t expect Miraz to slowly walk toward her. He lifted an hand, probably to say that Peter and Edmund had to stay where they were, and murmured something in Y/N’s ear.
“Each of these soldiers are stronger than the first thirteen reunited. Good luck, dear Queen.”
He left with a little smile, placed himself between his big chair and the wooden table he had put his helmet, sword and shield on, and gave the signal.
Y/N had hoped Miraz had just tried to discourage her, but it was clear that he was right. The soldiers were way stronger, each of their blows hitting like a rock with the speed of light. Y/N was running on empty, her breathing became more and more rapid and her moves slower and slower. The weight on her heart, knowing that Peter and Edmund hoped she would get out of this alive, was almost too much for her to bear.
However, against all odds for Miraz and the Telmarines, like they had expected for Edmund, Peter and the Narnians, Y/N fought incredibly well. She had turned her desperation into a force and, like each person that doesn’t have anything to lose, she had become simply dangerous. She took risks, she got hurt, but she killed several soldiers. One, two, three, four. Only three left. The victory had never been closer and, for the first time since the beginning, she seriously considered the thought that she could win.
She should have known. The last three soldiers walked simultaneously toward her, drawing their sword in the same movement, two of them stepping aside to surround her. Of course, it was Miraz’s order. If by miracle, she beats seventeen of you, you three, you fight together against her. She can’t win, understood?
The true fight began. From the corner of the eye, she saw the first man attempting to hit her. She dodged and attacked another. A sword touched her leg, another her arm. She dived to the ground. Rolled, jumped. She fell, bled, screamed, attacked. One hit her straight in the jaw, and she fell backward. She rolled and striked a body. Two swords threatened to finish her. Her eyes fell on the hidden dagger. No time to think. She grabbed the dagger, threw it on a man’s face, pierced the other’s body, rolled to dodge the last.
It took all her strength to get up and look at the man in front of her. Her knees were shaking, threatening to give up on her at every moment. She was giving her back to her family, and she couldn’t see their broken expression.
Because Edmund knew when she was exhausted. He knew when Y/N couldn’t move anymore, and he knew she felt like that at this very moment. Peter still hoped she would find the energy to kill the last one, he hoped she could get him by surprise if she attacked quickly enough. Both screamed when she fell back on her knees while letting go of her sword, and when she looked down, as if she was accepting her fate. As if she was ready to die.
“Y/N!” screamed Peter.
“No! Y/N, NO!”
Edmund tried to join his twin to protect her, but Peter had grabbed him, himself being held by Caspian. They didn’t notice Y/N slightly jumping when she heard them. The sword of the Telmarine seemed to fell on her in slow motion, and Peter and Edmund saw it hit her back. At the same moment, the soldier fell backward, Y/N on the top of him.
The following seconds seemed to last hours, everyone looking in disbelief at the two immobile bodies. Then, slowly, very slowly, her groans covered by the cheers of the Narnians, Y/N got up. Her chainmail had protected her, and in a desperate attempt, she had jumped on the solder to tackle him on the ground, her arm extended and her sword ready to kill.
Peter and Edmund rushed toward her. Y/N turned around and fell in Edmund’s arms.
“You did it! Y/N you did it!” Edmund had never felt so relieved in his life. “You scared me, don’t ever do anything like this anymore!”
“I can’t promise…” she smiled weakly. “Wait, I’ve got something to do.”
Y/N dragged her exhausted body toward a soldier. She ripped the dagger from his bloodied face and walked slowly and solemnly to Miraz. With a thud, she planted the dagger in the wooden table, and the weapon shook a bit. A puddle of blood was forming around it, soaking Miraz’s weapons. He seemed infuriated and looked up to Y/N as if he could kill her on the spot.
“Peter is a thousand time stronger than me.” She said with the most royal voice she had ever used. “If you want to stand a chance against my brother, I hope for you you’re a thousand time stronger than all these soldiers.”
And she left without adding anything, stumbling toward her brothers. Edmund wrapped an arm around her waist, Peter around her shoulders, and they slowly joined the mound under the Narnians’ cheerings.

cloudtail’s daughter: hollyleaf
alright, continuing my long running deluge of words, we move on to hollyleaf.
ah, hollyleaf. canon did you dirty. luckily, given your lifespan, i can do whatever i want with you. as long as you end up in starclan. also i haven't read squirrelflight's hope so i don't know the deal with that.
right. but as far as i'm concerned, i get to do whatever i want to do with her, and that means i'm...less making tweaks to her character and more giving us more of her, and smoothing out her character arc, because it's all a mess, you don't need me to tell you that.
alright, as per usual, warnings/disclaimers/we: this is for my cloudtail's daughter au. this goes pretty off the rails from canon, so i suspect it'll be coherent, but i still think either the main au explanation or the dovewing post is a better place to start.
2.5k words, 10min read. the least organized of all of these (no section headers).
right so i'm not really sure where to begin with hollyleaf, but i think the best place is the earliest one yet: roughly the fire scene. because hollyleaf is breaking one of my cardinal rules: don't mess with what came before, and so it's best we start there, i think.
right, so hollyleaf, as we know, takes the news about her parentage badly. and i'm not taking that away, mostly, but she doesn't devolve quite so quickly. because i just. don't like it.
hollyleaf is smart, she's loyal, it's a reasonable decision for her to fall of the rails as such, but i just really don't like it. i want hollyleaf to fall apart and come back together. i want her to have to deal with the consequences of her actions. and in this essay i will.. no but i'm getting ahead of myself, we'll do all that. first things first, though, hollyleaf keeps herself together, until she realizes ashfur isn't going to let this stay secret.
so she kills him.
and the truth comes out pretty fast. like no one is 100% sure but everybody knows.
and that? that is what really cracks hollyleaf.
right so remember in my worldbuilding post when i said something-something-i-don't-care-about-hollyleaf's-story? yeah turns out that was a fucking lie.
because i realized that i couldn't really make this work unless i knew why hollyleaf came back because well it's kind of a big deal. so i had to figure it out, and i was hyper proud of myself for realizing she could save dovepaw from the tunnels, and then i was like "well people have a lot of questions for her," to the point where one of the chapters in fading echoes is titled "questions" and it's just straight up people questioning what happened to her.
so. she still goes into the tunnels. and she meets fallen leaves. and they hit it off, probably a little faster. (tbh i'm still not interested in writing this, just what happens).
and she chills walright, continuing my long running deluge of words, we move on to hollyleaf.

so you know everything is fine until a thunderclan apprentice stumbles into the tunnels, hurt and scared, unable to protect herself.
hollyleaf and fallen leaves protect dovepaw, a flood happens, i haven't worked out the details and i'm fairly tired ATM, so please forgive my handwaving.
so yeah, dovepaw is with them for three days.
hollyleaf basically gets caught by cinderheart when they're going back, so she's like "well guess now i gotta see my family" and cinderheart is like "yeah u idiot we all miss u n i love u but i am dating ur brother now" and hollyleaf is like "fair enough i have a ghost boyfriend" and they're all good
everyone has a hell of a lot of questions for hollyleaf. i have a whole chapter dedicated to it. here are some of them, and some of the answers.
brambleclaw: why didn't you tell me? (no, he hasn't learned from squirrelflight how unhelpful this question is) hollyleaf: because you're the deputy and there's no guarantee you wouldn't out me, considering you were still disowning me
dovepaw: yo so there was another cat with you wasn't there? hollyleaf: ohhh yeah i have a ghost boyfriend sorry forgot to tell you that
squirrelflight: do you still hate me? hollyleaf: mom i'm so sorry i love you so much
and then hollyleaf is home. i mean jayfeather won't talk to her but that's a few books from now, when they have ghost partners, okay?
but before that, she has to go do beavers, and she never gets a real proper chance to make up with everyone
(don't worry, she'll get the chance before she dies.)
right so dovepaw has her beaver stuff and hollyleaf tags along because Nine Is A Holy Number
really, i just need a narrator on the beaver quest, and for reasons i've mentioned but will explain in a moment, it can't be cinderheart.
so i have this symbolism going where dove/ivy start and end the series (what, i'm big on structural symbolism. i put thought into everything. especially since i'm limited in these books with what/how i accomplish, so the things that are entirely mine, like who narrates what, is carefully thought out). anyway that's because they have turning points in their relationship in the first and last book. they fall apart at the midpoint of growing shadows, and they aren't fully repaired ever, but they get closest at about the midpoint of the last hope. that's a symbolic thing, that they've come back to where they've started, but not quite. can't go back, even if you regret.
regret is a big theme in this series. ivy and dove are a pair in part because they're bound by all of these regrets that keeps stacking up.
now, the natural choice for a narrator of the beavers would be cinderheart. she's a substitude lionblaze as far as this book is concerned. however, cinderheart needs to be the main narrator when she takes dovepaw to the tribe. she just does. so we could do two cinderheart books in a row, but then where do we put lionblaze? he's not really a major character in the second arc, he basically does nothing. i guess we could have him deal with sol, but cinderheart's arc is supposed to be she learns how to solve problems in different ways, and that's why she's able to tackle sol. so, like, fine, what if we make cinderheart and lionblaze arc one narrators, and have sol be a background thing? i mean, if i did it for the dark forest, i could definitely do it for this.
so that does create one problem: regret doesn't bind cinderheart to lionblaze. regret is a theme through cinderpelt and cinderheart. lionblaze is a sexy lamp. he doesn't mean anything, he's just a love interest to challenge cinderheart. so. it feels bad to me to artifiically pair them together and imply they have a dynamic like that.
and the larger problem is what it does to hollyleaf and jayfeather.
see, hollyleaf and jayfeather have this aborted forgiveness arc, that plagues jayfeather. i'm going to write a jayfeather super edition so help me god, but that's for another time. anyway, hollyleaf is trying to make up with everyone, but jayfeather won't let her.
and he's never going to get the chance to make amends, because she dies in the last book.
but anyway, if we make hollyleaf and jayfeather the exclusive narrators of books 4 and 5, we imply their character arc happens. there. and that's...not what happens.
it's aborted. they're decoupled, desynched. they have a moment of synchrony, where they have this shared experience, but it's not enough. hollyleaf is in jayfeather's past, and he's tryign so hard to move forward. it's all ~very symbolic.~
right. back to the present day, hollyleaf has to go to do the beavers mostly because i said so, but also because i'm cautious about drawing false parallels. i think it was cinderheart's essay where i said this is the only part of it i have control over (was it earlier in this essay i've worked on this for like 3 days) and so i want to do it right. but also, she's going to be a good narrator, becuase she's covering a lot of ground, and i think hollyleaf is pretty interesting.
so hollyleaf, my dear, terrified of breaking the code, hollyleaf, watches dovepaw and tigerheart get...close.
and this is. well, hollyleaf has seen what happened when people date illegal options. and it's not good.
so she spends most of the book just kinda panicking, waiting for the moment this goes south.
beavers happen, it's the same as the books, i'm super uninterested in that plotline to the point of memery. hollyleaf is fine, everything is fine, dovepaw is sad now because cats died, everything is fine.
so i mentioned at some point or the other that dovepaw begins sleeping on top of tigerheart. dovepaw, at this point, is fully grown, but she's on the smaller side. she's a standard to small cat. tigerheart is a tigerstar clone, and tigerstar has some maine coon genes or something because he's massive. so uhh you know she probably could literally sleep on top of him but it's not quite that, it's more she's curled up and he's kind of curled up around her, but not as a concious thing. it's similar to when u accidentally wake up cuddling someone bc u shared a bed and that's that. but less awkward.
anyway hollyleaf is like "cinderheart cinderheart we should do something this is a problem," but if u remember from cinderheart, cinderheart is also being nagged by cinderpelt about this.
so cinderheart doesn't want to hear it and hollyleaf is pretty much "whelp guess i'll just die" and by die i mean quietly glare at tigerheart and shower dovepaw in love and affection.
anyway yeah after that hollyleaf does nothing for like two books.
or one book? i guess beavers is book two anyway look she misses her gf but cinderheart is in the mountains and then she's like "oh wait i have a ghost bf i should talk to"
so hollyleaf spends more and more time in the tunnels. this book actually takes place at about the same time as distant whispers. there's not 100% overlap, but it's close.
right so jayfeather (i swear i wrote dovefeather this is the problem with having 3 linked aus god) follows hollyleaf into the tunnels and he has his whole time travel sequence/half of it i still haven't decided what i'm doing with it.
and hollyleaf and fallen leaves have good ole interpersonal drama, where they're trying to be a thing but hollyleaf belongs in thunderclan and yes, this means that hollyleaf is the character who gets the singular book, because jayfeather is extremely isolated from the main plot. in fact, the only reason i keep the time travel plot is because canon. not that i don't like that it exists but for it to have been executed well it needs to be less disjoint. which is why i think i'm breaking A Rule so i can put it all in oots so it's more logical. but that's a different rant.
anyway, there's a quasi-religious conflict where hollyleaf is like "just go to starclan" and fallen leaves is like "my whole problem is how i can't do that"
uh yeah idrk exactly what happens it is once again 3am so uhhh yeah ghost cats she considers leaving thunderclan bc jayfeather won't talk to her lionblaze is away she's still mad at leafpool and squilf is in an abusive relationship and hollyleaf is still pretty young, y'know? that's a lot.
firestar is like "grand daughter i love you dearly but can u maybe uh can u maybe make up your god damn mind"
anyway so hollyleaf and fallen leaves have a bit of a fight, he's like, "i'm keeping u back," she's like "ur not" but she knows he is, etc etc it's very sad and dramatic
so they kind of break up? it's a lil complicated but basically they're not talking to each other for a while, they're on the cat equivalent of "taking a break" ig
alright, so then book 5 happens, and it's jayfeather and cinderheart prepping for the great battle. idk. hollyleaf chills w lionblaze in BGCH and makes friends with ivypool. it's chill. i mean, it's not, but it is.
book six, hollyleaf is the only one to stay in thunderclan. she's kinda j chilling til the battle. and then. and then. oh this is the good part.
she sacrifices her self for ivypool.
yeah. okay, this is super disjoint, so i'm going with it. hollyleaf? done.

Jump the Fence Part Two: Ghost Out Of His Grave
chapter one: ghost in your house
summary: Benrey and Gordon adapt to living together. Some days are better than others.
notes: series title from “jump the fence” by mother mother. this part and the chapters within it are named after “ghosting” by mother mother. this chpater may seem familiar! i technically posted it before but i’m reuploading since it’s now part of a series.
AO3 link
It’s early when Gordon wakes up. Or late, depending on how you look at it. The sky outside is dark, with a faint glow that means the sun is about to rise. When he looks at his alarm clock it reads just past 6:30
If he really wanted, he could go back to sleep. But Benrey was acting weird last night, and Gordon was a little... concerned. Benrey had only been living with Gordon for a few days but he had gotten a decent idea of what they were like. Last night, he’d been all...jumpy, distracted, quiet. He’d barely spoken to Gordon, hadn’t eaten, didn’t even seem interested in the Mario game he was playing. Gordon had watched him fail the same stage 4 times in a row.
He’s not worried about them. It’s just, when your roommate is some kind of eldritch horror, you gotta pay attention when they seem off.
Gordon stumbles out of his room with eyes still bleary, glasses clutched in one hand, and almost walks straight into Benrey. “You’re up early,” he says, rubbing his eyes until his vision comes into focus. Benrey looks slightly dazed, standing in the middle of the living room with...hold on.
“Is that my backpack?”
“Uhhhhhhhh. Nope.”
“Don’t fuckin lie to me, man, that’s mine. What’re you doing with it?”
Benrey just keeps staring. Their pupils are huge in the dim lighting, round like a cats. They have the same weird glow, too. Gordon squints his eyes at them, folding his arms. Finally, they say, “I was just gonna leave.”
Oh, goddamnit. “Dude, it’s 6 am. Where exactly are you planning on going?”
“Uh. Y’know. Out.”
“I don’t know, actually,” Gordon says. He’s trying his best to keep his tone even, but he can’t help the bit of anger that slips out. What the fuck is Benrey playing at here?
Benrey sings a bubble of pale gray sweet voice, followed by an assortment of clear. Fuck, Gordon wishes he knew what that meant. He’ll have to ask Tommy later. Benrey is still quiet otherwise, and Gordon sighs. “Benrey,” he says, gentler. “What’s going on?”
Benrey huffs, looking away and adjusting his hat. “’m sick of waiting,” they mumble, barely intelligible.
“W - Waiting for what?”
The perpetual shadow over his eyes seems to get darker, somehow. “Y’know,” they say again, and this time Gordon explodes.
“I don’t! I don’t know fucking anything because you won’t talk to me! All you do is sit around playing video games and being fucking cryptic and now you’re trying to sneak out at 6 in the goddamn morning!”  His fists have found their way into his hair, gripping tightly.
More of those clear bubbles slip out, then black to a dark red. “I’m n - I’m not supposed to be here,” Benrey says, voice flat. “I’m - you killed me.”
Gordon winces at the reminder. “Yeah, well, you got my arm chopped off, so -”
“‘m not mad,” they add quickly. “‘s just how things had to go. But, uh, I’m not…” he trails off, making an obnoxious lip smacking noise. “I don’t have my passport for this area.”
Gordon sighs. “Since when do you care?”
“Mmb,” Benrey says. “Uhhhh.” More of the red bubbles. “Why’re you so mad about this?”
“Why am I mad about you trying to leave in the middle of the night?”
“Yeah. I thought you, uh, hated me and everything.”
“I -” Gordon sighs, rubbing his temples. Yelling’s not gonna help here, if he wants to understand what the hell is happening. He forces his voice to sound calm, or at least as calm as he can manage. Deep breaths, he thinks, his new mantra when dealing with Benrey. “It’s more complicated than that, man.” Honestly, he doesn’t hate Benrey as much as he used to. He doesn’t like him, but…he’s not the worst roommate, and he’s a lot less antagonistic now. He’s followed all of Gordon’s rules and been almost a non-presence in the house.  “I mean, we’ve never even talked about…everything.”
“I got your arm chopped off,” Benrey says.
“Yeah, and I’m still pissed about that. But you haven’t done anything like that here.”
“Sooo can I go now?”
“What? No!” God, he’s exhausting to talk to. “Why do you wanna leave?”
He smacks his lips again, looking at the floor. “‘s easier than waiting to get kicked out,” they say.
Gordon rubs his temples again. “I’m not gonna kick you out -”
Benrey looks up at him, eyes narrowed. “You - I - you’re the, the main character. I’m the uh…the bad guy. Duh,” and then he starts humming what Gordon thinks is supposed to be Bad Guy by Billie Eilish. “Right? You beat me. Kill the bad guy, win the game. But now, uh…shit’s all fuck. Bad guy respawned.” He shoots Gordon a wry, tired smile. “So, game’s not over, right? Game, uh….new stage. But you, you’re still the good guy. Fucking, little plumber man Mario. Princess is in another castle, gotta beat Bowser again. Just cause it’s a new stage doesn’t mean Mario and Bowser are gonna be bros. Right?”
He’s about to yell at Benrey for not making any sense when it clicks. “Are - do you think I’m gonna try to kill you again?”
Benrey shrugs, looking away, pulling his hat down over his face.
“Benrey,” Gordon says, trying his best to sound gentle. “I’m not - I only killed you cause you were trying to kill me! I said I wasn’t gonna try to kill you again!”
“I wasn’t actually gonna do it,” Benrey mutters. He shoves his hands in his pockets, hunching over.
“Then why the hell were you shooting at me!” Gordon yells, nearly hitting himself with his wild gesturing.
Benrey lets out a snort, almost a laugh but too…tired. Almost sad, if that’s an emotion Benrey can actually feel. “Game’s gotta have a villain,” he says.
“Stop being fucking cryptic and just say what you mean for once,” Gordon demands. “You were trying to kill me. You got my arm cut off. Why?”
Benrey sighs. “Game’s gotta have a villain,” he repeats. “Doesn’t matter if...if Bowser wants to fuckin, uh, become a chef or something. He’s gotta kidnap the princess. Even if he spends the whole game hanging out with Mario, he’s still…he’s still the bad guy.”
It’s not really any more comprehensible, but, well, that's Benrey. Gordon doesn’t think it’s physically possible for him to be straightforward. The meaning is clear enough, anyway.
“”So you...didn’t wanna be the villain?”
They shrug, trying so hard to seem casual and uncaring, but their expression gives it away. There’s a glint in their eyes, a spark that’s usually missing.
“So then what was with everything else? If you didnt wanna be the villain why were you such an asshole the whole time?”
“Thought it’d be easier.” Their shoulders tense up, eyes softening. Maybe sad is an emotion Benrey feels. Maybe Gordon’s been wrong all this time. “Be hard to kill someone you like, right? You’d do something stupid.”
“So, what, you got my arm cut off so I’d be mad at you? I was pissed before that.”
“I didn’t think they were gonna fuck you up that bad. And it wasn’t - it wasn’t s’pposed to be real.” Yellow eyes dart around, looking at anything but Gordon.
“The fuck does that mean?”
“It was just a game. It wasn’t real. You’re just, you were just some dude playing a video game, right? When Mario gets punched it’s like, whatever. The guy playing doesn’t care. If he gets punched enough though maybe he’ll just like...give up. Bowser gets to, uh, release the princess and go fuck around. I didn’t...'s supposed to just be a game over when Mario gets beat up. Load save.”
“And what about the boss shit at the end? Where you were, y’know, trying to kill me?”
A flicker of emotion flashes over Benrey’s face, before he goes back to his usual deadpan stare. “Uhhhhhh. Bow -”
Gordon shakes his head, “No, no more of that fucking Mario metaphor. Just - can you just talk like a normal person for five minutes?”
“Nah.”
Gordon wants to tear his hair out. He pinches his nose, taking a deep breath, and then another, until he feels like he can speak without trying to beat the shit out of Benrey. “Just. Answer the question. Why did you try to kill me?”
“I don’t remember?”
“Are you fucking with me right now?”
“No!” Benrey says, something close to offense in his voice, like he's actually hurt Gordon doesn’t believe him, but then he drops right back into that tired tone he usually has. “It was all...fuzzy. TV static, but like, in my head? And nothing, uh, nothing was like….real. I just….” he shrugs, picking at his nails. “‘I’m just vibing, bro.” Gordon takes another deep breath, cleaning his fists and preparing to say something, but Benrey presses on. “I tried to turn back. Before we went in, I told you, we had to go back. You didn’t listen.”
“Of course I didn’t listen!” He throws his arms up in the air in sheer exasperation. “You’d been saying nothing but bullshit up until then! How do I know this isn’t more bullshit, huh? How do I know you’re not just - trying to get me to let my guard down, so you can actually kill me?”
Benrey makes a low noise, accompanied by a handful of brownish-blue bubbles. “‘m not,” he mutters. “I didn’t - I don’t wanna be bad.” The shadow over his eyes is black now, the yellow of his eyes unsettlingly dim.
“Then why not fucking say something?”
“Couldn’t.”
Gordon raises an eyebrow. “And why’s that?”
“It’s like - uh -” They smack their lips again. “Like a fucking, uh, dam. The thing beavers make. Beaver can’t get through.”
At least he’s dropped the Mario metaphor. “Okay. So. Let me recap. You…didn’t want to be the villain, you were trying to get me to...quit? And when that didn’t work, you intentionally pissed me off so I’d kill you at the end ‘cause you couldn’t actually say what was going on.”
“Basically, yeah.”
Well, fuck. When Gordon says it out loud like that it’s…actually kinda sad.
No. No! He’s not gonna start feeling bad for fucking Benrey of all people. Gordon balls his fists, pushing down every stupidly sympathetic emotion he’s having. “Okay. Let’s backtrack a bit. Why are you telling me all this?”
Benrey shrugs. “Got tired of waiting for you to kill me.”
“I already said, I’m not -”
Benrey glitches. His face disappears for a second, replaced by a cracked and decayed skull, and then suddenly he’s normal again. A shriek tears its way out of Gordon as he backs away from them, almost slamming into the wall. For a second he’s back in Xen, watching Benrey’s massive form glitch and deform, and then he shakes his head and reminds himself that he’s in his apartment and Benrey is at least the size of a human being. “What the hell was that?”
“How come you don’t believe me but I’m supposed to believe you? Huh? Gordon got trust issues? Gordon skeptic man?”
“I think I’ve got more than enough reasons to have fucking trust issues, man!” He’s still pressed against the wall, hands curling into fists.
“But Benrey’s gotta trust you. Benrey’s not allowed to be scared.”
“Are you saying you’re fucking afraid of me?”
Benrey’s Sweet Voice is high pitched and vaguely dark, like a bubble made of shadows. Gordon can’t translate, but it feels like a yes.
“You know what? I think I’m okay with that.” Gordon peels himself off the wall, stepping closer to Benrey, holding out his prosthetic hand. “Now you get how I felt the entire fucking time we were in Black Mesa.”
The bubbles get darker, a deep, almost dripping black. “‘m sorry,” Benrey mumbles.
Gordon blinks. “What?”
They repeat themself, louder this time. “I’m sorry. For. Uh. Everything?”
The only thing Gordon can think to say is, “What the fuck?”
“I’m tryna be nice!” Benrey says. He’s pouting. Like a little kid or some shit. “It’s called an apology, bro.”
“I know what a fucking apology is! I just wasn’t expecting one from you, of all people!”
“I don’t wanna be bad,” Benrey says quietly. “Can I go now?”
“What?” Fuck, with everything else they’ve been...arguing about, Gordon forgot this whole thing started because Benrey was trying to leave. “No!”
Benrey opens his mouth, looking like he’s about to say something, but all that comes out is Sweet Voice. A lot of Sweet Voice. Black to red, gray to clear, dripping black, translucent dark, swirling around him until Gordon can’t even see Benrey under all the bubbles. When they fade...Benrey’s still standing there, and he’s crying.
Gordon’s never seen him cry before.
“I don’t wanna be bad,” Benrey says again. “This was supposed to be my chance to be not bad.” They scrub at their eyes, turning away from Gordon. “This - this is sucks.”
Fuck.
He doesn’t want to feel bad. He doesn’t want to feel sympathetic. Benrey spent the entire time they were in Black Mesa trying to fuck with Gordon, and a few tears don’t erase that.
But.
“I believe you,” Gordon says. Benrey turns back around.
“Wha?”
“I believe you,” Gordon says again. “That you didn’t wanna...do everything that you did.” He pauses, closing his eyes for a second. “And - I’m sorry too.”
Benrey stares. Does not blink. Continues to not blink as the silence drags on, until Gordon feels like he has to say something else.
“I kinda...assumed you were a piece of shit from the beginning. Didn’t really give you a chance, I guess. So. I’m sorry for all of that, and for the whole, killing you thing.”
“You don’t gotta apologize for that,” Benrey mumbles. He’s still not blinking, eyes wide. “Uh. Thanks.”
“And - if you really wanna leave…” Gordon sighs. He still doesn’t trust Benrey, not in the way he trusts Tommy and Dr. Coomer and even Bubby. But. “I’m not gonna stop you.”
“If I stay are you gonna…be less mad? Less Gordon Angy Momence?”
“I’ll - I’ll try.”
“I, uh. I think I’ll stay.”
“I’m gonna -” Fuck, he’d been planning on getting up before this. He’d been all ready to start his day. Yeah, fuck that. “I’m gonna go back to sleep.”
“Gordon sleepman,” Benrey says, nodding his head. He taps his fingers together. “Hey,” he says, holding his hands up. “You wanna. Uh. Hug?”
He’s not even gonna try to understand what’s happening now. “You know what? Sure.” He steps forward and lets Benrey wrap his arms around him, and after a moment, wraps his around them. It’s…not entirely unpleasant. Benrey is a good bit shorter than Gordon, so with them leaning in against his chest he ends up with his head perched on theirs, hat scratching his chin a bit. Benrey’s arms are thick and strong, and the way he’s holding Gordon should be terrifying but somehow it’s not.
He steps back after a minute, scrubbing at his face again. “Cool. Uh. Poggers,” Benrey says, and Gordon rolls his eyes but he’s smiling a little despite himself.
“Good - well, it’s not night anymore, but. You get the idea. I’m gonna go pass out.”
“Cool,” Benrey says again.
Gordon stumbles back into his room, collapsing into bed. It’s the most peaceful sleep he’s had since before Black Mesa.
sweet voice translations:
gray to clear: i shouldn’t be here
black to red: i should be dead
dirty blue: i don’t wanna hurt you
dark like the shade: i’m afraid
black and tarry: i’m sorry
