Book Reviews with Quara

Since I keep talking about audiobooks, now I want to do a sort of mini book review of the books I've read since starting to "seriously" pick up reading again last year. Also I just like typing about things. I'm skipping Fire Season by Philip Connors and Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams because I've spoken about them already. Keep in mind I am not super-super critical of reading material; generally if I enjoyed it I'm giving 5 stars. If I disliked it though I get a lot more critical because then I want to start analyzing what didn't work for me. Now go forth and learn about what my reading taste is when I'm not reading/writing angsty mcyt fanfic!

Books I loved, aka 5 stars:

Cold Storage by David Koepp

This was the first book I checked out from Libby and it was a banger. I am still trying to replicate that high tbh. When I gave my mom access to my library card in Libby (her rural library has nothing and my city library has everything) I made her check it out too. The narration on the audiobook is fantastic. My mom raved about the narration and basically says she doesn't want to check anything out that wasn't as good--regularly her reviews to me are "good narrator, not as good as that Cold Storage book" lmao. You may know David Koepp as the guy who wrote the Jurassic Park screenplay. This is his first novel.

It's about a mutated fungus that is a sci-fi version of the very real Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which is more commonly known as the zombie-ant fungus. In this book, a version of Cordyceps can infect all lifeforms, including humans, and has been locked away deep in a former US military vault that has since been sold and converted into an underground storage facility. The plot follows two unlikely protags who work in the storage facility, as well as the two retired military people who are the only ones to have seen the fungi in action, as they try to prevent it from being released into the world. It's funny, horrifying, and gory.

They are making a movie of this book. The release date is tentatively 2024, but I worry about it because I have heard so little news on it. They did do filming though. I have high hopes because they cast Joe Keery as a main character, which I think is perfect casting for the guy in question. I have low hopes because they cast Liam Neeson, a white man, as a character who was originally Hispanic and (as I just noticed while writing this) changed the character's name to be more white. Ugh. Who is Robert Quinn and what did you do with Roberto Diaz???????

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

What if you got kidnapped and woke up in a parallel world where everybody knew who you were, but they think you're someone else? What if you're just a quantum physics professor, but this other version of you is a successful theoretical researcher? What if your wife never married you in this universe, and your son was never born? How do you get back home? This book is constantly pulling out interesting new questions, twists, and places to explore. Also I liked that while it does feature romance pretty prominently, it's about a guy who just really loves his wife of 15 years and wants to see her again. I just like it when men love their wives.

Also, a fair amount of Goodreads reviews poke fun at this author for having way too much fun hitting the enter key on his keyboard, but since I listened to the audiobook I never had to deal with any annoying formatting choices lol

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

I feel like we all know about this one already, tbh. If you don't, heavy tw for child abuse and eating disorders. Tread carefully. It's worth it though if you are confident you won't get triggered. If you haven't read it I recommend the audiobook specifically because Jennette narrates it herself and that gives the book so much extra. It was a 6 hour audiobook and I was gripped by it all day.

Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister

BACKWARDS TIMELOOP BABEYY!!! This one was great. It's about a Mom who witnesses her teenage son kill a man. Every day she wakes up in the past again until she can solve why this happened, the mystery leading up to it that entangles her family, and try to prevent it. First she ways up the day before, then two days, then three, then a two weeks, then a few months, then a few years--until her son hasn't even been born yet. I enjoyed it. Also a plus for British accent narrator (can you tell I'm American....)

A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong

This one was fun. I checked it out because it was longish and I had to drive like 8 hrs roundtrip for a work trip, so I listened to this the entire way. It's about a (Canadian) woman named Mallory who was a police detective in the modern day, who gets attacked while out for a jog in Edinburgh, Scotland. The attacker strangles her and she goes unconscious. When she wakes up, however, she finds herself in someone else's body--in the Victorian era. She's now a 19 year old housemaid, and has to adapt as quickly as possible to avoid suspicion. She quickly finds out that she works for a man named Dr. Duncan Gray, who is a medical examiner. And there's a person who's been murdered in a very similar way to how Mallory herself was attacked. And she's quickly finding out that the person who's body she's in was not well-liked.

My favorite part about this one is the emphasis it has on early forensics in Victorian Scotland. Dr. Gray is a fantastic character and it is so interesting to see him doing his lil cutting-edge forensics research (which Mallory, being educated in modern times, wants desperately to help him with.) Also the narrator, while being Canadian, does Scottish accents for all the Scottish characters. I'm not the best person to ask as someone who isn't Scottish but I thought the accents sounded pretty good lol

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

My mom recommended this one to me. It's also a lot of fun. The title is, mostly, accurate. Ernest Cunningham (protag) is a writer, who mostly creates how-to books for mystery novelists he sells on Amazon. No, he doesn't write mysteries, he just writes the how-to books. But he's very well-versed in the "rules" of how to write a classic mystery! He promises that, as the narrator of this story, he will always be an entirely reliable narrator. The book itself is obviously fiction but within the narrative of the book, it is being told like a nonfiction account of something that the main character is writing down. This book is sort of a bottle mystery--strange murders while everyone is snowed in at a ski resort during a family reunion, anyone? The main character is funny and breaks the fourth wall often. I am convinced that there is a separate audiobook specific version since the narration within the book references it being an audiobook. The main character will be like "so, you probably realize this isn't the real killer, since we still have 4 hours of the book left to listen to" lol. I almost want to check out a print copy of this to see if the text is different.

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

First one on the list that I didn't listen to as an audiobook. Honestly, I probably read this book in 4 hours flat. Three of those hours just dead-focused while on a plane (with the book's hold expiring as soon as I landed and took my phone off airplane mode.)

I don't really know how to explain this one. I don't think I understood what it was about until I actually got like 4 chapters in and then I couldn't stop. It's just off-the wall ridiculous. There are talking cats. There are dolphins that want to unionize. There is a volcano lair. There are explosions and assasination attempts. There is a reasonably bleakly accurate capitalist picture of what "villainy" means in our world. There is a poor main character in over his head as he learns he's inherited all this from an uncle he never saw. This book is like...satire comedy. Comedy and outlandish but you're also depressed about billionaires a little while reading it.

Books I thought were Okay (3-4 stars but actually I gave both these 4 stars I think)

The Poisoner's Ring by Kelley Armstrong

The second book to the book I mentioned above. Honestly, I remember very well what the first book was about (i typed the summary by memory) but I have trouble remembering specifics about this one. It's a bit too long as well, at 14 hours. I don't have anything bad to say about it, I just didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first one.

But honestly I do remember it was still a good time. I just really like Dr Gray as a character and the setting, early forensic science focus, etc. These books are also setting up to be an EXTREME slow burn romance between Gray and Mallory, which I don't mind. (Literally by book 2 the most we have is that she thinks he's attractive, so at this rate it will take us 3 more books to get anywhere lol.) I will be checking out the 3rd book when it is released this spring.

Someone Else's Shoes by Jojo Moines

Also a book that suffered from being too long. It's a 12 hour audiobook but I think that it could have been 8 or 9 hours and gotten the same point across. My mom recommended this to me. It's narrated by Daisy Ridley, who does a good job. I enjoyed it, but I also started to feel like I really wanted it to be done?

Also unsure how to describe this one. Slightly-contrived-but-cute plot about how a bag switch up in a gym connects two women's stories. One is a, frankly quite annoying, American woman who married rich but has now been completely cut off from her money (and even passport) by her ex-husband who's cheating on her with a younger woman. One is a British woman with low self-esteem and a bad job who is struggling to keep her family afloat while her husband suffers from severe depression. I think my favorite was a side character named Jasmine who brought light to every scene imo.

Books I disliked (2 stars but after writing this review I almost want to make it 1 star)

Aurora by David Koepp

David I really believed in you after Cold Storage. But imo, this book isn't it. It throws away every interesting part of its apocalypse-level plot to focus on the characters. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love a good character-focused plot, except I never connected with anyone in the book. I just kind of didn't enjoy any of them. This is a story that is supposed to be about a solar flare taking out all electricity and communications for most of the world. And it only covers like a few days after the disaster AND THEN TIME SKIPS LIKE 8 MONTHS UNTIL EVERYTHING IS HAPPILY SOLVED NEIGHBORHOOD UTOPIA STYLE. I'm sorry????? Assuming I can believe that this little suburban Illinois cul-de-sac has managed to set up subsistence farming in a few months and is living perfectly happily, why would you....not show me how that happened.....

Also the "everything fits together" character moment at the end felt unearned. I was like yeah, okay, I guess this slots together. But the author didn't earn that moment for me. Instead of connecting with the characters and the plot and getting invested I felt like I was just being....told that everything worked out?? Or told that this was an important moment instead of actually Feeling the moment? It's hard to explain but I was like ok great thanks let's all go home now.

Sigh. I just can't get over the whole "throwing away the most interesting part of your setting" part. Again. Why would you spend a significant time setting up the science and how much of a disaster the solar flare is and then not show any of the characters figuring out how to survive it long-term....?

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

This book has such a high rating. It's very popular right now. It took me like 12 weeks of waiting for my hold to come up, and that's with the library having 7 copies.

It is, supposedly, about a smart octopus named Marcellus who helps an elderly lady solve the mystery of her son's disappearance at sea when he was a teenager.

In practice, it is about one minute at a time of Marcellus (the best part of the book) and extended sections of characters that I don't care about at all. I assume all the pieces of the story were supposed to come together later, but I was just highly bored. I was so bored that I DNF'd at 25% when my hold was up. I do not care enough to wait weeks to check it out again. Based on the one star reviews I read, the characters I didn't like did not develop into better people later and remained similarly annoying. Now, I don't need characters to be good people of course. But I do expect to be interested in them. I still don't know how the son's disappearance factors in because I felt like I heard barely anything about the supposed main character woman.

I feel vindicated because my coworker also checked out the book and told me a few weeks ago that she was at 50% and there still wasn't anything happening in the plot. I will ask her tomorrow if she finished it or not and if it ever got better.

Write an entire book for Marcellus the octopus and I'll check it out...

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn

This book had so much potential. It's about a group of four women who were formerly assasins but are now retiring at 60. To celebrate retirement, they go on a cruise and then realize that they're the new targets for assasination, presumably because they know too much about the organization that used to employ them.

In execution....very meh. I actually had a Libby glitch on this one, where I think I missed about 1.5 hrs of narration total because the book skipped twice. I have no concept of which parts I missed. What I do know is that, the book was already so cobbled together before the first skip that I didn't realize I had missed anything until the end. Like sure, parts didn't make sense, but I was ready to accept that it was just Like That since the rest of the book was like that. After reading a bunch of reviews of this book I am convinced that there is NO way that all of its flaws can be explained by me missing a small part. After all, I did listen to 8.5 hours of it still.

The characters never felt their age to me. I felt like they either acted like they were 80 or 90, or like they were 20. It just seemed odd to me. The characters also felt very 2D, like the author wrote down three traits per person and called it good. There's a younger woman who appears to know the main character and conveniently helps the group, but I literally never figured out where their relationship originated or how they knew each other. Maybe I missed that too. By the end of the book I still didn't know who anyone was and couldn't remember which person was the main character. The plot jumped around to new locations constantly and often with little transition--this happened even on the parts where I definitely didn't get a skipping glitch. The main villain was a guy I literally had barely heard anything of til that point, although perhaps he came up in the 1.5 hrs I missed. They described the same painting in excruciating detail THREE separate times. It was...too feminist? Feminist in a contrived way where I have to be reminded every 5 minutes the characters are women? Like, I know, I am reading a story about women. Please don't mention it several times a chapter. There are ethical and moral considerations about their profession and chosen organization that never really get given the weight required. There was a love interest for the main character that I hadn't heard of once until he was introduced like an hour from the end--maybe I missed more about him in the parts I skipped? Unknown.

Any books that disappointed you? okay idk if i would 100% call this ~disappointed~ because they were both definitely still 5 star reads for me, but both kelly barnhill new releases this year didn't quite live up to my VERY high expectations for them -- i just love her other stuff so so so so so much and i did love both of these as well, but they honestly felt just a tad underbaked!! ogress and the orphans was a little too heavy-handed in places imho and i think she normally is really a master of a more subtle metaphor, and when women were dragons was soooo fantastic in the first like 5/6 and then the last bit just kind of felt like a summary of what she wanted to write??? idk this is definitely mean for two books that again, i did still rate five stars. they just weren't her best imho.

Also, I highly suggest getting a kindle!! You’ll save sooo much money in the long run! Plus you get 2-3 months of kindle unlimited. Which has over a million books on it. And then it’s $10 a month if you choose to keep it up! And you can download Libby on your phone. Which is linked to your local library card and you can rent books straight to your kindle for free!! I’ve had mine for like 2 weeks and have read like 5-6 books already lmao I read so much faster on it. And I take it everywhere so I can always ready! Perfect for trips too so you only have one device vs several books! I’m sounding like an ad now hahahdbdbbsbkakkks but I’m seriously obsessed

What's your favorite game to play with Kaiba? Do you two enjoy videogames or tabletop games more? (And does he tend to get way to into card games, even things like Uno?)

HAHAHAHAHAHA oh man. So games are a huge part of our relationship just in general, and it’s honestly hard to pick a favorite?? Personally I like video games best because we can play those while curled up on the couch together. The number of days you’ll catch us each with our laptops out while leaning on opposite ends of the couch and just playing on Duel Links or Master Duel instead of playing with physical cards specifically because that way allowed some physical contact that doesn’t work with Duel Disks or even playing on a tabletop; it’s a really common thing. 😂

Master Duel of course just came out in January and we’ve been playing it like mad ever since, but I our favorite game to play together, by hours logged, that doesn’t also require additional players is—believe it or not—Stardew Valley. We each have more hours logged on that silly farming game than any other in our library. Seto loves to mod it and basically do his best to turn the caves into a recreation of DOOM and then absolutely power through them. I am SO GLAD that game is cooperative, he is a force of nature when it comes to SDV combat. Personally I tend to take all the raw materials he digs up doing this and make them into products to sell and cultivate friendships with the townsfolk, maybe make dialogue/story mods. :P

The game that’s stood the test of time and which we’ve played the longest and spent the most on is, of course, the yugioh TCG, and yes, he’s still every bit as fierce a competitor in that game now as he ever was. Yes, he gets way too competitive in card games in general—he runs some extremely aggressive decks for Magic as well as yugioh and generally dislikes losing. The funny thing is, though, he doesn’t hate losing as much as he thinks he does—he hates losing when he feels he didn’t get the chance to test his own strategies in the match. As long as the game lasts a few turns, and especially if he gains the upper hand before having the balance of power reversed on him, he’s a much more gracious loser than he once was. 😂

Sadly, yugioh is not a game that often allows your opponent many turns to turn the tide of the duel these days. 😂 He gets really into just about any game that has a strong strategy or psychological element, though, not just card games. You should see him playing Civ 6, or poker, or even Among Us. He tends to stay more relaxed in games of chance where you can’t really trick your opponent, like Yahtzee.

Uno is actually a funny one. We played it a lot when we were younger, particularly around the time we first started dating, but don’t play it a ton anymore. Someone else asked about this recently and I remembered that he always insisted on only winning on blue cards, so he actually lost at Uno more than other games, and I was never sure of why—he’d change the subject if I brought it up. Broke the game out just the other night and he’s not doing it anymore; he won on a red card for our last round that night. 😂 Asked him again and he got all blushy and said he used to do that because he didn’t want to be as competitive with me anymore once we started dating. That didn’t last long and nowadays the competition is a big part of how we have fun together as a couple so he doesn’t hold back now. I wasn’t sure whether to kiss him for being adorable or call him a dumbass for holding back lmao. Both. I did both.

How to (Kinda) Recreate Cards in 3D - Happy Lovely Everyday

MMJ's new look is inspired by the postal service! Alas, only Airi (and Len, but Sekai said girls aren't allowed to wear pants) got the 3D model. Not to worry though, there are outfits and accessories similar to those that appear in the cards! Analysis after the break.

First and foremost, we need to analyze the costumeless cards. This is to see what they have in common with Airi's costume - Messenger of Love - and its recolors. We'll have Haruka model that.

(side note, MR5 totally gives me cruella de vil vibes lmao)

It looks like for accuracy purposes, the new Airi needs to be MR3.

Matching things: 1. They all have a mailbag. 2. They all have stamps on their outfit. 3. They have plaid on their bottom and torso. 4. They all have brown gloves. 5. They all have the same necktie(?).

Now onto the differences. 1. Minori and Haruka have black cuffs at the end of their sleeves with white frills at the end. Shizuku simply has white sleeves. 2. Their socks are varying lengths. 3. Haruka has a beret, Shizuku has a cap, and Minori has a hairclip of sorts tied to her braid. 4. Minori's outfit is blue, Haruka's is red, and Shizuku's is green.

Unfortunately for us, the accessory from Airi's costume doesn't match any of the costumeless girls'. Also unfortunately, there's no real red variant, and the green variant by and large isn't quite the right shade. Not much we can do about the costume itself, but there's always alternatives in the accessory department!

Our alternative for Haruka and Shizuku is Airi's Colorful Festival costume, Memorial Heart Coordination. The red variant is perfect for Haruka, and the green variant might be the best option for Shizuku. Unfortunately, this will require MR5. Oof, those chords. These are honestly the best we'll get though.

As for Minori, there's no exact match for her accessory (obviously), but there are many alternatives that fit the vibe!

Well, here it is - a lengthy explanation of each card in my mdzs major arcana deck and what I meant to convey/what i would have changed in retrospect/what alternatives i considered! It’s a bit messy and my typing style is lazy but hopefully it will be an interesting read to some of you :)

And so you don’t say I didn’t warn you - jiang cheng’s section (11 justice) is absurdly long lmao

0 the fool I elaborated on this in the post itself but yeah basically jin ling is kind of representative of all the damage and trauma caused by the past, and there’s a kind of danger there of him falling victim to the same vices as the older characters and repeating the same mistakes and perpetuating the cycle of war and misery (the cycle that we already see with how the jin sect became the new wen sect, and later with how jgy became the new wwx) and he has a lot of room to grow! He grows so much over the course of the novel, comes to realise the complexities of the past and gets a harsh life lesson in how nothing is as black and white as it seems. But ill save talking about his progress for the end, for now whats important is that he has room to grow and also a dog. I don’t really have a justification for the sun, i mostly just thought it looked sick? It made its way to the next card as well, where it makes a bit more sense, but then i realised it was a dumb motif to include 1 the magician I still very much like wwx for the role, and that illustration would have probably had him raising a corpse on his left and pointing threateningly to the sun on his right. I considered including the table as well, with some mdzs relevant items replacing the card suits. Anyway, like i said wwx got a few cards to himself already so i went with the alternative wq design, since i think she fits the card as well. Both she and wwx are highly skilled people, extremely driven once they set their mind to something. The card to me symbolises the creative mind as well as a general drive for action, which fits them both - wwx was famously a prolific inventor, and wq came up with a previously unheard of surgery, after all. This card strays pretty far from the rider-waite deck design, largely because i was still figuring out how i wanted to approach this series, but you can still see the influence. 2 the high priestess I was actually going to skip this card at first because I couldn’t think of a fitting character, but once i considered a qings character post death, it all fit pretty well. She was already a highly intuitive person in life, and in sharing her memories with wwx she is, in a way, relaying a kind of secret knowledge. Anyway she’s one of my fav characters so im glad i got a chance to include her. The coffins could be interpreted to be xxc and sl or xxc and xy 3 the empress Theres other mother figures in mdzs who got to be mothers for a longer time, but jyl definitely embodies the positive aspects of this card the best. She’s nurturing, kind, emotionally supportive, she already mothered wwx and jc quite a bit when she was young. Plus i liked that the rw card had both water and flowers, making an easy lotus connection. In retrospect the stars look kind of out of place and i should have replaced them with something more relevant... Also, i should have had her hold a lotus seed pod instead of a flower, haha 4 the emperor Like i said I considered jc for the role but hoching bullied me into admitting that nmj was better… they’re both more of an inverted emperor than an upright one but then again theres hardly any character in mdzs who would fit upright emperor so. Jgs was also considered but he’s even uglier than nmj so i couldn’t bear to draw him 5 the hierophant It was pointed out to me that lqr would have fit this card better and the truth if that statement haunts me to this day. Unfortunately I have no space in my brain for lqr so lxc got the role instead. My main reason was his role during the wen destruction of gusu lan, when he ran away with the contents of the library - this is why there’s bookshelves behind him. The keys, take, from the rider-waite deck, are meant to represent the gusu pendants that allow you to enter 6 the lovers Im sure many people would have chosen wangxian here but I uhh don’t really care abt wangxian personally? And also their love story is so convoluted that jyl and jzx seem idyllic by comparison lol. Also i didnt really have an idea for who to put in the angel’s place for wangxian… mme jin certainly did not get these two together in the end but undeniably she and mme yu did initially give them a chance to fall for each other so. Thats something i guess. Anyway the trees became their sects’ flowers and the mountain became the burial grounds - an omen of their tragic fate, basically 7 the chariot There might have been other characters who fit this card better but i couldn’t really think of another card for lwj and i thought it would be weird to not include him… anyway i don’t really care for current timeline lwj BUT i do like that he was clearly influenced by wwx to walk his own path in life based on his moral convictions rather than follow his sect’s rules blindly. The chariot is to me a card of self control, self determination and focused action, so it seemed fitting. The composition felt kind of empty without the actual chariot so i padded it out with the guqin, the cloud recess in the bg (it doesn’t look great but i tried to replicate the drama design….) and the bunnies which conveniently fit the colour scheme of the sphinxes in the rider-waite design 8 strength Like i said before, my interpretation of this card is more… morally ambiguous than the quote unquote official meaning, so i thought about manipulative or duplicitous characters more than kind characters whose strength is expressed through gentleness (though i did consider jyl briefly for the latter interpretation). As such, i considered both jgy and nhs, but ended up going with jgy largely because i couldn’t pass up the opportunity to put the nie sect’s beast as the lion. 9 the hermit My thoughts immediately went to bssr lol. It may be an overly literal interpretation but whatever, i like it just fine. And i like that i managed to echo the rider-waite silhouette in the mountain and the tree (and even in bssr herself) 10 wheel of fortune God i love the parallels between these 2… this card to me is about how you cant trust your current situation, good or bad, to last forever, and these 2 embody that perfectly imo. Wwx went from son of a well off servant and a powerful cultivator, to street rat orphan, to adopted son of sect leader jiang, to double orphan, to MIA, to terrifying but admired warrior, to terrifying and despised traitor, to dead, to, at the very end, suddenly respected and trusted again. The dishonesty and cheapness of whatever the public’s current opinion of him is is portrayed beautifully as far as im concerned. And jgy of course claws his way up to power only to instantaneously become public enemy number one, to the point that he’s probably blamed for stuff there’s no reason to believe he had a hand in. Wei wuxian’s silent astonishment at how quickly the cultivation world turns against jgy and towards him again is a delicious moment of thematic resonance. 11 justice I settled on this card for jc after he got booted from the emperor seat but i do think it fits, in a somewhat convoluted way. I turned both the sword and the scales into visual representations of the golden core transfer (can you tell im obsessed with it). According to biddy tarot, the justice card is partly about searching for the truth, and the scene where jc finds out about the transfer is of course a big deal. I was also very influenced by the reversed meaning again - which is about being reluctant or unwilling to face or accept the consequences of your actions. I feel on an intuitive level that this fits jc but I’m not sure how well i can explain it - it’s something about how he’s a little too comfortable scapegoating wwx for things that were also, if much less so, influenced by his actions, and also something about the way he keeps wwx at an arm’s length emotionally but still leans on him and accepts his support when he really needs it, and somewhat hypocritically expects wwx to put the needs of him and the jiang sect before the needs of others. And also something about the core exchange is the consequence and proof of wwx’s deep - terrifyingly deep, even - love and care for him, which is something jc doesn’t seem to let himself acknowledge. Maybe even something about how you could argue that the way all of the jiangs acted around wwx - jfm’s favouritism that left him with the feeling of a debt he needs to repay, mme yus insistence that he be a servant more than a brother to jc, prepared to give his life for jc, and jc’s own unwillingness - or inability, he was a child after all - to clearly acknowledge wwx as an equal to himself, enabling wwx’s self sacrificial and protective tendencies - that all of this was what caused wwx’s complete and unquestioning willingness to do whatever it took to protect jc, and therefore paved the way to the golden core transfer. And i don’t mean this to be scapegoating jc - especially considering how young he was when this all went down, it wouldn’t be fair to expect this level of emotional perceptiveness, awareness and maturity of him - but i think adult jc has to grapple with the fact that the chain of cause and effect was not as simple as wwx fucking everyone’s lives up to be a martyr, and that both jc and his parents had a role in that story as well. I don’t even necessarily think this is something that jc only realised in the current timeline - i think it’s something he felt on some level this whole time, and it probably led to a lot of feelings of guilt - but the suibian reveal definitely puts it in sharp focus, and i think he’s now better equipped to handle this introspection than he was as a recently orphaned, traumatised teenager, lol. ANYWAY the window with the fabric is both a nod to the rider-waite design and a reference to the destruction of lanling - i actually did some basic ass research for this, and it seems that in ancient china fabric would indeed be hanged in a window if the normally used paper was damaged. The design of the window, as well as the very idea to use it to imply the reconstruction of lanling, was taken from this great piece of jc angst by my pal moroll1! Oh yeah also the covered window kind of works as a denial of forgiveness for jc because it’s like a halo but covered up... Also I completely forgot to put a blindfold over his eyes which would be perfectttt because blind justice and the core exchange......... ok moving on 12 the hanged man I always have issues with this card because i cant find a satisfactory summary of what it’s really about. Best i can tell it symbolises a need to hit pause, surrender or let go of something… ive also seen it tied to sacrifice? So mo xuanyu doesn’t fit perfectly, but sacrifice is definitely there in a surface level reading kind of way, and the idea that you have to surrender or let go in order to achieve your goal does fit the whole deal of getting revenge but giving up your life in exchange and not being there to see it 13 death This is probably one of my favourite cards, definitely not because I have huge issues with change or anything…. I see this card as signalling the necessity of change or putting an end to something / leaving something in the past in order to start anew? At first i considered putting past wwx, mxy and current wwx here as a kind of transformation and one cycle flowing into the next... But firstly, I’d already used mxy in the very previous card, so putting him in again would feel like overkill, and secondly, the longer I thought about it the less convinced I was that this would even fit with the card’s meaning? Because coming back from the dead doesn’t like... trigger an internal transformation within wwx or anything? Anyway, fun fact: the design I ended up going with was actually originally intended for judgement! I thought I was being very clever with the whole “figure plays an instrument and the dead rise” parallel, but apparently I’d just completely forgotten that the judgement card had a completely different composition... Truly I was boo boo the fool... But yeah anyway at the end of the day I figured the design would kind of work for death as well, with Wen Ning and the theme of transformation, (since in his case coming back as a fierce corpse does actually mark a certain transformation in behaviour) and Wei Wuxian’s protection of the Wen people essentially signifying an attempt to break the cycle of oppression if that makes any sense? Like, wwx is trying to revolutionise the way the world works a bit, if you catch my drift 14 temperance The centrist card! Again this is probably going off track from the “official” interpretation, but to me this card has a certain “don’t commit fully; do everything in moderation; don’t take either side” flavour to it that i personally find infuriating irl and that i very much assign to lxc. It’s entirely possible that I’m misinterpreting his character because i didn’t really pay him (and the 3zun in general) much mind while reading, but hell, I’m allowed to pick favourites and choose who i want to interpret deeply vs shallowly. Again, i wish id chosen lqr for hierophant because its so annoying for a character i don’t care about to get two cards…. But oh well 15 the devil My alternative idea for this was jgy as the devil and lxc plus nmj as the figures, but since all three had been featured already (multiple times, even!) i figured I’d go with xy instead, especially since he’s among my faves lol. I think the devil signifies something along the lines of unhealthy attachment, obsession or addiction, which isn’t 100% accurate in the case of xxc and a-qing, but if i stretch it a bit to cover toxic relationships in general, and especially manipulation or negative influence, i don’t think it’s half bad. My main struggle here was to choose who amongst the xxc/sl/aq trio to choose for the human figures. 16 the tower Arguably jin zixuans death and the following massacre of nightless city were the final and most direct reason for the siege of burial mounds, and the tiger seal is good shorthand for wwx’s loss of control over his powers, which led to the deaths of jzx and jyl. When reimagining major arcana i like to feature some kind of building in this card (spoilers for a possible future project but in my rose of versailles major arcana set the tower is bastille) and even if it’s not a tower, the image of wwx looming over the gathered crowd from atop a rooftop is so good i couldn’t resist 17 the star Struggled with this one - considered both jin ling and lsz for it, as symbolising a hope for the future, but that was kind of covered by the world so it wouldn’t make sense to include here as well... As usual when I struggle with interpreting a card (as opposed to understanding it but struggling with matching a character to it, like with death or moon) I went to biddy tarot and read all the details about its meaning. What i got was that this card signifies an incoming period of introspection and inner peace following a time of turmoil, as well as a general moving on into a new, better phase of one’s life or finding new meaning and purpose. The figure also suggests someone vulnerable, but possessing a keen sense of intuition as well as a good degree of practicality and common sense. Given all those, I settled for mianmian because IM LOVE HER..... I also kind of see her as a prelude to the “just one person is enough” theme present in tgcf!! And i think her decision to abandon her sect because she saw the toxicity and corruption in it is a very inspiring action - even if it didn’t make a large visible impact, i think the appearance of her and her idyllic family at the very end of the novel - paralleling and mirroring wangxian - implies that at the end of the day, it was a meaningful one 18 the moon Another card i ALWAYS fuxking struggle with - this time less because i can’t grasp its meaning and more because I can never find a character that fits it well. I usually get fixated on the “dreams and subconscious” part, but if i lean more on the “disguise, deceit, anxiety and fear” part, i eventually figured the whole yi city arc wouldn’t be a bad fit. I say the entire arc because it really does encompass all those themes if you include both the past and the present - xue yang’s disguise, his tricks with the villagers, a-qing’s lies and even xxc’s reluctance to talk about his past as well as xue yang pretending to be xxc all fit the disguise and deceit angle, and the general mystery and creepiness of the current timeline yi city work well with the anxiety and fear - the mist, the slow uncovering of the past, even a-qing being revealed to be an ally after scaring the shit out of the protags. I definitely struggled with including all the elements and characters, and even moreso with making them vaguely fit the rider-waite composition, but i think it ended up okay ish. OH and i completely forgot to draw mist swirling around them :( 19 the sun I was considering mianmian’s family for this one, but since I used her for star, I ended up with wwx and his parents instead. Once again I’m reinterpreting the card a bit - normally I think it symbolises incoming times of pure happiness and abundance, as well as a connection with the inner child, but I gave it more of a nostalgic or sentimental twist - wwx looking back at the brief glimpse of his happy childhood. 20 judgement another card that i struggle to interpret a bit... Here i actually used the tgcf tarot zine as a reference! In it judgement is summarised as “rebirth, following duty, absolution” SO i figured that nhs, mxy and wwx all together would fit pretty neatly... wwx achieving (public) absolution through clearing his own name after being reborn, and nhs sort of calling on wwx to expose jgy’s crimes... It’s a bit messy but not bad I think! 21 the world This ties very closely to my read on mdzs as a story - which is that it’s, at the end of the day, largely about cycles, and about how hard it is to break them, but how we gotta keep trying and have hope anyway. Or maybe more precisely, that the people directly involved with and influenced by the trauma of the past might not be able to get over said trauma and that the hope for healing from it will be shouldered by the new generation. Or something like that… Basically what i mean is that jc and wwx and lwj and lxc and nhs and jgy and all these people who were in the thick of the sunshot campaign and the siege are so profoundly affected by it that it genuinely feels by the end of the story like there is little hope for them to ever truly overcome that trauma and build a better future without repeating the same old mistakes - but there is a glimmer of hope in the new generation, specifically in jl and lsz. And it’s a bit paradoxical, because they have also been directly impacted by the past tragedies - lsz having his entire clan wiped out after wwx failed to protect them, jl losing both his parents to wwx’s mistakes - but despite that loss, and despite coming from arguably the two opposing sides of the past conflicts, they are both, in the end, capable of moving past that tragedy, of recognising the complicated nature of those conflicts (jl’s moment of clarity at the end is both heartbreaking and hopeful) and forging friendships between clans in the process. I honestly think that the extra where jl is struggling to assert his authority as sect leader, to treat his subjects well and to cooperate with other sects in a truly amicable way is the single hopeful ending note for the larger themes of the novel - it allows us to imagine that maybe these kids can learn from the mistakes of their elders rather than getting sucked in by resentment at those mistakes, and actually build a brighter future for the cultivation world. And sidenote, this is also why i have a soft spot for jin ling and lan sizhui as a ship... speaking of which their poses were directly referenced from the lovers card ehehe

Looking back, I’d like to add some symbol of jin ling’s trauma so that it mirrors baby wen yuan in the tree stump... maybe his father’s sword?

1. as a kid, i was very good at maths. when i was 6, i used to solve mathematical tasks on the 3rd grade level of elementary school without a problem. and i always enjoyed the thrill of having a complicated mathematical task and all the steps you had to take in order to get a correct result. it was just neat to me. unfortunately, as i grew older, this just didn't stick with me that much. i am definitely much more into arts and language now, but i still very much appreciate mathematics.

2. my favorite board game is called dixit. it's such an interesting game with beautifully illustrated cards. the point is to confuse other players by telling a short story based around one of the cards you have in your hand. others are supposed to choose one of their own cards that mostly resembles your story. and once everyone makes their choice, all the players are supposed to judge whose card is the most relevant to your story. you also have to try convince other players why is your card the best one. it's so fun and engaging, i highly recommend it.

3. i used to write short stories for my classmates in middle school. it started with me writing a story for my best friend and then my other friends saw it and asked me to write one to them as well. everyone was always a protagonist in their own story and i used to intertwine their crushes and personal interests and hobbies into each story. at one point it started being exhausting because everyone asked for their story lmao, but i still remember very much enjoying coming up with those stories and listening to their reactions afterwards was always worth it.

4. this one is a bit funny....but whenever i visit my relatives or my friends i always have to check out their little libraries lmao. i just really enjoy seeing what kind of books people own and what is their reading taste like....it's just a thing i do, i guess.

i wish to learn ice-skating. i still haven't learned.....i really enjoy looking at talented people competing at ice-dancing and that sort of thing. especially tessa and scott. they're mesmerizing.

keeping this one within my own country and culture (otherwise this would take forever lmfao) i would absolutely love to go back to serbia during its nemanjić dynasty. specifically around 1217 when the serbian kingdom was proclaimed, which led to the establishment of the serbian orthodox church in 1219. imagine witnessing that. not to mention meeting such incredible and important people from our history, saint sava as a biggest example.🤍

dylan was a football player in high school, believe it or not. he was rather good at it too, which is sort of jarring considering his pacifistic nature. however, he DID land on someone incorrectly at some point during his senior year, and broke their wrist. he quickly abandoned the sport altogether because of how guilty he felt.

touched on this briefly but dylan really… loves indiana jones lmao. like, it’s quite ironic given his absolutely inability to be a badass, and lack of suaveness. however, he admires indy’s lust for adventure. he also was obsessed with the mummy as a kid. both of these were incredible sources in his very irrational decision to sudden anthropology. however, he does really love and admire anthropology. his favorite ethnography is the spirit catches you and you fall down, which makes him cry like a little bitch every time he even thinks about it.

he’s the second oldest, but he is also baby. he is SUCH a big momma’s boy. he misses his mom so much. he writes to her often, and of course calls her even more. despite being six-foot tall, he still goes home and rests his head on his mother's lap, falls asleep as she runs her fingers through his hair. he often tries to find native english plants and flowers to press, and mail back to his mother in the form of bookmarks. has nEVER STEPPED ON A CRACK IN HIS LIFE, BABY.

just leaves a shit ton of notes in books in the library. some are riddles, some are poetry, some are commentary on the book, some are doodles. just depends on how he’s feeling for that book. he doesn’t tell anyone he does it, but he’s waiting for someone to connect the dots with his handwriting and writing style.

speaking of plants, his room is basically a big greenhouse. he has so many plants, and takes serious care of them all. he has a little humidifier in his space for them, marks down when he waters what plants, and has a label maker to label them all with a name. they are all named after shakespeare characters.

dyl is a doodler, so much so that he contributes to the school paper as a cartoonist. his cartoons are usually just random thoughts he has, but sometimes they get political and he works marxism into them. (this man loves marx.)

I HAZ A CAT

It’s been 84 years -- actually 8 since I’ve had a pet and 2/3rds of my life since I’ve had a cat -- but I am now in possession of one petite, green-eyed, rabbit-furred female tabby (the one I met last week), formally named Katerina but known as Squeaky because of her mews.

She is shy and easily spooked by movement and/or noises (ex. every time someone comes home and unlocks the front door she becomes an instant streak of lightning to her “den” under the bed), but she warms up pretty quickly again after getting scared. She does not currently jump onto beds, climb into laps, curl up next to you or seek to be picked up, but if you hold your hand down or sit on the floor, she will endlessly head-butt your palm and/or rub her chin against your knuckles, arch her back end to the sky as you run your hand down her body while she moves forward, and then turn around to repeat the process until she is satisfied and wanders away.

She may also flop down and roll from side to side, exposing her incredibly fluffy tummy fur, and purr luxuriously while you stroke said fluffy tummy. It’s not even a trap, she loves it. MY DREAM!!

(Also today she was hanging out in her cat tree next to me on the computer, and when I stood up to pet her there she went CRAZY with affection, purring and rolling and then putting her paws on my chest to stick her face in mine and rub her head and chin all over. She also has decided that sitting on top of my computer tower under the desk is a fabulous perch, whether it’s on or not and whether I’m there or not.)

So anyway, now if I’m not updating it’s probably because I’m very distracted by my Cat, whom I brought home 3 days ago and yet am just now getting around to telling you about.

(I don’t have pictures yet because I suck at taking them, but maybe someday! She has a really cute black smudge mark on the bridge of her nose and her most common pose so far is lying on the floor with one leg stretched out in front of her.)

Should you change your name when you get married? NOT IF IT’S DURING A PANDEMIC.

As I am finding out, Social Security offices are closed, so you have to mail in your application to get a card with your new name. Which means mailing documents.

To prove your identity, you basically have to provide your passport or driver’s license (there are some other documents technically accepted, but I don’t have them or they don’t include the required info). And I don’t have a passport.

When I asked how long it would take to get my documents back, they said SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS.

Why would anyone think anyone is fine just...not having their driver’s license for TWO. MONTHS???

QUESTION

Has it ever been a rich-person thing to like...build your own library? Not the standard library inside a house, but an actual freestanding building that’s just rows and rows of shelves expressly to hold books? I feel like if I had enough money and land, I would build an outbuilding or two just for this purpose.

I just find it hard to imagine a house, even one with a lot of rooms, ever having enough wall space to hold all the books a person might want to own, while a room filled with aisles of shelves inside a home feels...not aesthetically pleasing, even though it’s amazing in a space designed for that purpose.

Despite being a totally indoor cat, our poor kitty has managed to get very sick -- sneezing 5-10 times in a row several times a day, eye discharge, seems to have a very stuffed up nose and a bit of trouble breathing through it. She didn’t greet me this morning, staying in her paper bag den for hours instead, and didn’t even react to catnip, which is unsettling (though she’s still eating okay, and happily accepted Treats).

She’s been like this for a couple of days and Google tells me that indoor cats can in fact catch colds and that they might go away on their own after 4-5 days, but she seems SO miserable that I feel like I should make a vet appointment now. But also IDK. Any cat owners want to weigh in?

disclaimer I don’t write hc or stories or prompts for any fandom but this has been on my mIND for several months and i just gotta gET IT oUT-

these hcs are based on the movies and not the book mostly

pat’s mom is vietnamese and was an immigrant, his dad is reg yt

his dad actually served in the military during the vietnam war and was stationed there. he eventually met pat’s mom and they had a relationship

long story short, his dad brought pat’s mom to america before american troops left saigon

they married in america and lived in a few bases while pat’s mom got her green card and learned english over time

pat’s dad is originally from maine but not derry, eventually the couple moved to derry after his dad became ex military

pat’s mom became fluent in english at this point but she had an accent which people in town made fun of her for

also were at times racist against her

but dad put a stop to that when he was around or when she brought it up to him

they do like the small town life, prefer it better than being in the big cities or on a military base for sure

soon pat was born and pat’s mom became a stay at home mom most of his childhood, only when he was in middle school to high school did she get a part time job at the library

dad works as a clerk at an office

NOW FOR THEIR PERSONALITIESS

pat’s dad is more calm and laid back although friendly, is a more open minded individual, can actually speak vietnamese!, he doesn’t speak about his military time except if it has something to do with his wife like a memory or smth

pat’s mom is the more extroverted one but not wildly so ambivert maybe?

is DEF the one that will say her opinion if she disagrees with something tho whereas dad will let it pass but she doesn’t express it in an aggressive way (kinda like “i dont agree with that because such and such”)

has no problem chastising pat on chores i.e. washing dishes, laundry, cleaning his room/the house in general lol its kinda funny to see her telling him to do something and he does it with a scowl on his face every time

there are times where she is a bit hard on him, it’s mostly due to how she was raised since in viet culture, a lot of pressure is put on first born sons esp

she does feel bad at times for that though and lays off for awhile

this is also due to avery’s death

since avery died and pat is now their only son, both mom and dad let pat get away with ALOT OF STUFF more than he should esp when it comes to school problems they just feel guilty

and yep u guessed it he takes advantage of that we’re not surprised here

but they are loving parents much to pat’s annoyance lol

pat’s mom conceals her viet accent in public tho, due to comments ppl in town have made about it

but at home she doesn’t care to keep it up

she tried to teach pat viet, still hoping he becomes fluent at some point lmao but thats a pipe dream and she kinda knows it loool

she talked to pat in viet when he was a baby, and to this day he understands what she says in viet but he just responds in english (cant write viet either)

its cuz he’s lazy and doesn’t see a point in learning it its for the culture u bastard omfg

VERY RARELY he will reply ONE WORD to his mom in viet (like she asked to pass her the salt or some shit and he says “yeah here” or smth) and she smiles every time he rolls his eyes

if she has trouble understanding something, his dad will translate in vietnamese for her

yes she makes viet food including pho but she has to replace trad ingredients for whatever replacement she can find at the store

pat’s mom was originally catholic, his dad wasn’t but they all go to church together so pat was raised catholic (i think it mentions in the book that he is but idk and am too lazy to look it up again ealfvneakv)

he’s baptized, received first communion and is confirmed and yes there are pictures of it in his house lmaooo but he’d rather die then talk about it so not even the bowers gang know about it

his parents love him obv cuz they good parents

he’s rather annoyed by their existence and its not overly friendly nor overly mean to them

they’re just kinda... there.. at times to him

like roommates lol its sad but they dont realize his true feelings obv

however he doesn’t like it when ppl in town make racist comments about his mom or his dad being married to her and death glares at any person that makes a comment

its more along the lines of “i can cause my parents discomfort but not YOU” type of thing tho dsvdjfvfj he’s not a noble person

has def punched henry for this reason so henry doesn’t say shit anymore

both his parents try to blend viet and american culture in their household

they like the other bowers gang bois and are very nice to them, they give them advice when needed, they usually leave the bois alone tho if they are hanging out at pat’s place while they’re there

the bois like them and are cool with them

they also tell the story of how they met and left vietnam together and got married every anniversary to pat and he feels like his soul is being ripped out of his skin every time alskvnarlab he doesn’t care AT ALL

this kinda turned into more about pat’s mom than anything lol but i hope i did good its been 6 yrs since i made hc about something lmao

Day 1523: kindle came and I set it up, I’m trying to set up the app Libby so I can rent digital versions of books through my local library for the kindle, but I had to get a library card which I have to wait for in the mail. Not too upset about it, I looked and it seems like there’s about 8k books on the app available for kindle, which if I can read those for free from the library I’ll be very happy about. It has all the popular Amazon books I was looking at too, but the wait list is very long as of now (14 weeks-over 6 months for some lmao). I saw some other websites you can get free/cheap books from, so tomorrow I’ll look more into that. I’m just excited to start reading again. I already read the two physical books I bought and they were good.

ever been camping? yes , twice for school ! it’s not literal in-the-woods. i mean, it was in the woods but it was a camping facilities with a community hall and kitchens and bathrooms. it was really fun.

do you take vitamins? yes.

do you regularly attend a place of worship? it’s been hard due to covid but my family and i watch mass online !

do you have a tan? i don’t really tan.

what do you think of when you hear an Australian accent? as an australian, i have no idea. i hear it everyday when i go out lmao. but when i think of australian i think of chris hemsworth.

time you normally get up? school days is around 6:30–7am while on weekends/holidays it’s around 7:30–8:30am.

describe your kitchen at the moment. um, pretty cluttered. we have chocolate muffins that i bought from costco today hehe!

do you play cards? oh my gooodddd god, i used to play cards 24/7 with my friends in primary school but now i have forgotten !

what colour is your car? i don’t have a car yet but one car is light gold, and the other is light blue, and the other other is silver & gold/yellow.

can you change a tire? nope.

your favourite state? well, in australia i’d say victoria (not at the moment though) and in america, probably new york !

favourite job you’ve had? i've only had one job that i’m still doing right now and it’s working for this pop up that sells freshly homemade and baked cakes and pies and it is so. good.
