He’s so excited for a day off where he doesn’t have to think about work

So he’s ready to go at 5 am. Practically bouncing

But once you get in the car it’s time for ENERGY

You guys pick up breakfast on the way and it's time for some fun music and singing with the  windows down and smiling and laughing with each other

When you get there he swears he isn’t a “one trip bitch” and packs as much stuff into his arms as possible

Runs onto the beach, finds somewhere to sit, and immediately wants to jump in the water

Remind him to put sunscreen on please. He’s pale he will burn

But expect a water fight and a bunch of snacks and he’ll buy you ice cream if you want some

Maybe you guys walk around for a while, go out for dinner, but whatever you’re doing, he’s guaranteed to make it a blast

Honestly he just loves to spend time with you, so a day out with only you on his mind is perfect

ALBUM REVIEW: The Strumbellas — Rattlesnake

The Strumbellas hit the mainstream back in 2017 with their smash hit “Spirits” off of their third studio album, Hope (2016). Prior to that, they had released two brilliant albums, My Father the Hunter (2013) and We Still Move on Dance Floors (2012), which both showcased a group full of brilliant harmony, noticeable charisma, and genius orchestration ability. Since 2017, the band has embarked on a world tour and has only gained a greater fan base. The sextet can be described as alternative country and gothic folk. As crazy as those two genres sound, together, they describe the brilliance of the band’s sound. From the grim ballad “Shovels and Dirt” to the get up on your feet and dance song “Sailing,” the band has created a discography of diverse and excellent material. Now, the band is back with another album, showing the world and their fans that they still have some tricks up their sleeves.

Rattlesnake is the band’s fourth studio album on the label Glassnote. The album is yet another step forward in terms of sound and style for the band. With a killer opening track that sets the tone for the entire album to a brilliant sing-along closer, Rattlesnake is a gorgeous treat for the ears. Two years ago, when I saw The Strumbellas at 9:30 Club, I remember the lead singer, Simon Ward, telling the crowd how his kids would ask why he wrote only sad songs. While that may be true for their older albums, their latest record is full of happy, pump-up songs perfect for a warm summer day.

The record opens with “Salvation,” which might be one of my favorite songs of 2019 so far. Opening with a soft synth leading into a full band jam session, “Salvation” can put anyone in the best of moods in just a couple seconds. The main theme of the song centers around overcoming one’s anxieties and understanding that the past is the past and has made you the person you are today. The second track, “I’ll Wait,” is a beautiful love song with one of my favorite choruses on the album, where the whole band comes together with all voices and instruments at once singing:

“I’ll wait I’ll wait, To be the one To catch you when you fall Always, Always, I’ll be the one To answer when you’re calling.”

While the entire record is pure genius, two other songs that are worth a highlight are “We Were Young” and “All My Life.” “We Were Young” is a beautiful song with a muted but fast strummed guitar played throughout most of the song. It captures the feeling of nostalgia while also looking forward and has a chorus that will bring a happy tear to your eye. “All My Life” is the closing track and finishes off Rattlesnake in the best way possible. The highlight of this song is the chorus, with the long, held-out vocals over the lyrics “All my life I’ll be yours.” It’s a nice sentiment that gives the listener a feeling of love and hope similar to the feeling from “Salvation.”

The Strumbellas have a way with writing and orchestrating beautiful works of music. It shows on their previous albums and it shines on their most recent. One thing even better than listening to The Strumbellas is hearing them live — trust me, their shows are twice as good as their albums, and their albums are pretty damn good.
