Sunday Morning
8:00 AM
On a Sunday
Philadelphia, PA
Usually, he would wake up to the smell of coffee around this time and reluctantly get out of bed after a few minutes of failing to fall back asleep. But it seemed someone was slacking this morning.
Dennis grumbled as he rolled onto his side facing the edge of his bed and swung his legs over, stretching as he got to his feet. He really wasn’t looking forward to having to start this morning’s pot of coffee from scratch himself but it seemed Mac was out of commission. It was only when he stepped out of his room that he realized why.
There on the couch were Mac and Charlie. Charlie was flat on his back, head cocked to the side as it laid on a mashed up pillow, arms around Mac’s shoulders with a hand in his hair. Mac was laid on his stomach on top of him, head comfortably on his chest, hand under Charlie’s shirt from where he has presumably been delicately thumbing a top surgery scar while they both fell asleep the night before.
They were both still out cold and yet Dennis almost wanted to call them tender, despite being dead asleep. It was certainly an improvement from where they had started the night, at least. They had an argument over something stupid and it blew up bigger than it needed to be for such a small thing. What they were mad at each other for, Dennis couldn’t remember for the life of his as his head swam a little trying to recall everything.
He was damn near asleep himself when he heard them crashing in, not saying a word but he assumed they were glaring at each other a hundred times over in their aggressive silence. There had been a loud thump which was the sound of Charlie’s body sinking into the couch, Dennis knowing that it would have been louder if it were Mac because of his extra mass. Moments --- no, minutes --- later, the sound of Mac’s door opening from where it had been shut was heard but there came no sound of it closing.
Mac had probably opened it but left it ajar when he came back over to the couch. Probably apologized for whatever he said, in spite of being stubborn about such things any other time of day, and waited fro Charlie to cave in and forgive him. That was probably the point where they were still a bit mad at each other in the back of their minds but it was an opportune time to let it lie and physically lie together.
In the end, no matter how it all actually went down, Dennis knew the pair would always come running back to each other. Charlie took solace in Mac when they were younger and he just wanted out. Mac found comfort in Charlie always being there for him and supporting him, no matter his ideas, sexuality, body type, or literally any other differing factor. They always had each other no matter what and it was, dare he say, wholesome.
Deciding he had spent enough time staring a them, Dennis just sighed for a moment. Once he came back to reality, he noticed the soft trill of rain outside, too light to perturb the sleeping forms in the living room. He predicted they’d still be a sleep just a little while longer so he was going to let them have it and not wake them just yet.
He retrieved the sheet off Mac’s bed, tossing it over them on his way to the kitchen, and finally got started on that coffee.
