Internet's down at work AGAIN so I'm making the best possible use of my time by posting this first sentence ask game! Many thanks to the lovely @athelise for the tag--go check out her work!
Also, girl, I am an shamelessly including WIPs and am humbling requesting you do one with your WIPs, I wanna see! 👀
Here we go, limited to Nardo fandom and in reverse chronological order:
"How do I keep letting you talk me into these things, Ino?" Sakura moaned, struggling to wriggle into an almost too-tight little black dress. (Untitled, MadaSaku longfic WIP, unposted)
The minute hand of the clock on the wall seemed to melt, bleeding into the space where the number six should have been. (Next of Kin, ItaSaku longfic)
"Ino, stop pulling," Sakura groaned, wrenching her wrist from the other girl's grip. (Like Pears in Summer, ItaSaku one shot)
"This is unnatural," Sakura announced with all the certainty of a doctor proclaiming a diagnosis—and none of the professional detachment. (Maniac, KakaSaku one shot)
The cemetery is strikingly beautiful. (Liminality, ItaSaku one shot + unpublished WIP sequel)
The first time Kakashi ever saw Sakura naked she was covered in blood. (Under the Sun, KakaSaku one shot)
"A toast to the Hokage!" (Spaces Between Stars, ItaSaku & KakaSaku longfic, unfinished)
Tick, tock. Tick, tock. (Clockwork, KakaSaku one shot)
"So? Any plans to celebrate the anniversary of Sasuke's triumphant return to the village?" Ino asked, snatching the last dumpling from the plate before Sakura's chopsticks had a chance. (Even a Blind Pig, KakSaku one shot)
It started with a cigarette, and he watched her childhood evaporate like smoke. (Slow Burn, AsuIno one shot)
Read 'em here
Evidently, I enjoy clock-related symbolism and Ino being pushy. This probably sums up everything you need to know about me up as a person ^^;
Tagging @nightowl27-writer @fm-white @tsume-inuzuka @lilyoftheshadow @nagia-pronounced-neijia and anyone else who wants to play! Any fandom, any pairing, original work, whatever, hit me with it :D

Do you have any recs for kakasaku multichapter fics? For context your Ballad of the Hound and Spider is in my top 3 of all time 😇 so this kind of grown up portrayal would be fantastic! ~🥒✨
I'm so glad you enjoy Ballad so much! Off the top of my head, two of my favorite canon-verse kakasaku fics are Identity Crisis and Better Man. I'm also obsessed with Konoha Files if you're looking for a modern AU. Those are all great places to start if you're looking for longer kksk fics.
I also highly recommend checking out @ksficrec as a great resource for finding new kakasaku stories! Hope this helps! :)

Wait, YOU’RE Spoiled Sweet? I had no clue… you have to know, I must’ve read House Calls 3-4 times over this summer, because I remembered one day how much I loved the interactions between Sakura and the ninken in “some fic” I read ages ago. And I went looking and found House Calls again.
It’s both my KakaSaku comfort fic and the sole reason I started writing again after 8 years. It brought me joy again as both a reader and writer. And for that… thank you. So much.
I’m going to read your original writing tonight. And congratulations on making that leap!
Girl. I've been following you for forever? How did you not know?! LMAO This is the funniest thing and I love it.
Regardless, I'm so glad you still enjoy reading House Calls! And not gonna lie got a little teary to read that you started writing again because of it. I love it that HC did that for you.
Also thanks so much for taking a look at my original stuff!

I'm new to tumblr, I can't understand how there are so many kakasaku's here, I'm someone who doesn't care much about age differences if there are two adults but kakashi has literally been sakura sensei since she was 12 it's either pedophilia or grooming and I saw some comments that they were very touchy during the war arc, but he is also with naruto during the series and I don't see anyone shipping them
People ship Kakan*ru as well, trust me. There’s someone out there who ship’s every single sensei/student pairing you can think of. And i mean that unfortunatly.
I don’t really get it either but all i can really say is block on sight and move on. There’s no point in starting arguments or trying to talk to them, and god forbid you tell them you don’t want to interact with that content (i got harassed to heck and back for that)
Block, move on and enjoy the stuff you actually like. Also use filter’s. If you don’t know how it’s very easy. Go to settings- general settings- fillters- and just add the ship name (or any variation that might exist that you can think of)
As for the war, ya. They like to turn Kakashi into a predatory creep. That isn’t welcome on this blog so i can assure you that you will not find it here ever
Also, side note: if you ever mention the ship or talk about it in any way i highly recommend putting a * in place of one of the letters or breaking the name up with a /. This prevents it from ending up in the ship tag where people will get mad at you for putting hate in the tag, even though you personally didn’t it’s just that tumblr’s tagging system is a whole ass mess

heyyyy i was wondering if you will be updating Threefold? i really enjoyed your work so I just thought that it wouldn’t hurt to message you about it
i realize it’s been a while since you’ve worked on that fic but i was really hooked on the way you wrote sasuke because there aren’t a lot of fics that thresh out his soft/caring side the way it was done in yours 🥰🥰🥰
Wow, no idea how long this sat here UHHH
I actually started a TobiSaku back in January and completely stalled! Plus the KakaSaku from a few years ago...
I would like to say I've been on a writing block, but I started writing a lil' something for scum villain so it's more like my brain is not vibing with Other Things right now, meaning the Naruto stuff is just... there.
Threefold suffers from a common problem, which is that I usually know the start and end, but never plan properly for the middle. Does that mean I'll never touch it again? Not sure. I did really like that Sasuke too, but I'm not super passionate about writing Sasuke, sorry if that spoilers anything.
I have a serious ItaSaku I'd like to find the energy to revise. A good portion of it needs a rewrite before I can continue with it. That fic probably takes precedent over any potential Threefold updates, since it will likely take a LOT of energy to rewrite.
This is not a satisfactory answer, sorry!! The short answer is: maybe? I liked that I took a Danzou coup and made it into silly domesticity fluff. That IS very much my brand.
Maybe one day?? ¯\_(u_u)_/¯

In the Darkest of Places - KakaSaku
Someone wrote an awesome KakaSaku recently and I absolutely adored it and it inspired me to write this, but I can’t for the life of me remember the name of it or who wrote it?? (Maybe @raendown or @mouseymightymarvellous???)
In the Darkest of Places KakaSaku
Kakashi had been watching her all night.
Like a moth to a flame, his gaze drew to her, falling away only to be pulled back again some minutes later. As her ex-teacher, it had long since become habit for him to keep an eye on Sakura. She had been the only female and the one with the most to lose, and in a way he was more protective of her than the others, even if she had become the most successful. Sakura was equal parts strong and beautiful and intelligent. She drew every gaze when she walked into a room but even the bravest of admirers refrained from approaching her when her teammates were attached to her hip.
But not tonight. Tonight she was alone.
Kakashi had witnessed her arrive some hours ago, but Naruto and Sai continued to remain absent as she sank lower and lower in her stool as alcohol took her in its unforgiving grip. The chatter of his companions felt on deaf ears every time he diverted his attention to observe her across the bar, eyeing each shot she consumed. The longer he watched, the more concerned he became.
Something was a little off, something a little wrong. Sakura never came alone and she never drank herself onto the floor.
And so Kakashi continued to watch over her from afar, silently chasing away any admirer that entertained the thought of approaching with a warning glare and a promise of regret should his unspoken order be defied. Sakura needed company, but not to share a bed with. And as the night wore on and the shot glasses continued to drain, Kakashi knew he was going to have to be the one to fill that role tonight.
The bar was nearly empty by the time Genma and Anko finally left Kakashi alone at the table. His gaze never wavered from the kunoichi still hunched over the bar who had drank her weight in liquor and had slipped so low her cheek pressed to the countertop. She didn’t show any signs of moving any time soon.
It was only once Sakura continued to remain oblivious to the bartender’s pointed stare that Kakashi finally pushed himself to his feet and quietly approached her. He was mildly surprised to find her still conscious as she traced the scratches in the counter’s surface with her nail absently. Her finger stilled as she noticed his presence and she peered at him without lifting her head. “‘kashi.”
He could hear every drink she had consumed in that single syllable but he merely smiled at her under his mask as he placed a hand to her back. “It’s about time we get you home, yeah?”
Sakura hummed and her gaze fell back to her finger as she resumed tracing patterns in the old wood. For a long moment, he was certain she wasn’t going to move and he briefly considered the potential consequences of just hoisting her over his shoulder when she sighed heavily and straightened on the stool.
Her pale, pink locks cascaded over one shoulder in a mess of hair that brought attention to the slender column of her neck and the strength of her shoulders, but it was her eyes he was drawn to. They were red-rimmed, but from exhaustion or alcohol he didn’t know, and the energy that normally brightened her forest-green eyes was dull and lackluster as if the spirit had been stolen from her.
“Am I a good shinobi?” she suddenly asked.
Kakashi cocked his head curiously. “What?”
“I asked if I am a good shinobi?” Sakura repeated slowly.
She gestured with her hands, briefly taking them off the counter of the bar and it was only Kakashi’s years of training that allowed him to react fast enough to steady her before she slipped backwards off her stool. Sakura quickly placed her palms on the counter again but his hand still lingered on her waist, not entirely trusting her to remain upright on her own.
“Of course you’re a good shinobi,” he told her. “One of the better ones, in fact.”
Sakura nodded slowly. “Good. Because apparently I am not a very good medic  and it’s good to know that at least I have something to fall back on.”
Her words slurred together but she spoke slow enough that Kakashi could make out her words, and his brow furrowed in confusion. “Why aren’t you a good medic?”
“Because medics are supposed to save people,” she said sharply, like he should have already known the answer. But then her voice softened as her shoulders slumped dejectedly. “And I don’t.”
Understanding washed over him like fog dissipating in the sun and sympathy curled in his chest as he rested a comforting hand on her back. “You can’t save everyone, Sakura,” he reasoned quietly as her gaze fell to the dirty counter. “It’s just a fact of life. But you are still a great medic. Sometimes you’ll save a patient and sometimes you’ll lose one. I know it’s hard but you have to keep trying-.”
“Four,” she said, holding up four fingers towards him.
Kakashi frowned before he shook his head, not understanding. “Four?”
“You said ‘sometimes you’ll save a patient and sometimes you’ll lose one’,” she explained. “I didn’t lose a patient. I lost four, back-to-back.” She lifted her gaze from the counter to meet his gaze, the dare evident in her haunted eyes. “So tell me again that I’m still a great medic.”
Kakashi released a silent but heavy sigh as he finally understood the weight of her burden. But before he could say anything to lessen her grief, the bartender slid a piece of paper towards them. “The tab,” he explained simply.
It took a great deal of self-control for Kakashi to not shoot him a scathing look and he said nothing as he pulled a small stack of yen from his pocket and left it on the counter.
Sakura missed the entire exchange as she rested her eyes on her palms but she picked her head up again as Kakashi placed a hand to back again. “You are a great medic,” he repeated firmly.
She shot him a ghost of a smile but it breathed some life back into her emerald eyes and she followed his silent gesture to stand before she allowed him to lead her from the bar, his arm wrapped securely around her waist as he supported most of her weight. She stumbled a few times as they traveled down the dirt path away from the downtown district of Konoha but Kakashi caught her every time, ensuring she remained tucked safely against his side.
“Can I stay with you tonight?”
Kakashi looked down at her sharply, caught between being surprised at her boldness and confused as to why she didn’t want to go home.
“I’ll sleep on the couch, or even the floor,” she pressed before he could ask. “I don’t care. I just don’t want to be alone.”
Sakura tucked her face into his shoulder as they walked, her fingers gripped the back of his vest as her other arm wrapped around his middle. She looked so lost and fragile, something he hadn’t seen from her since she was a genin straight out of the academy, and whatever argument he had building on the tip of his tongue died.
There were so many times he had fallen short on his responsibilities as her teacher and then again as her team leader; so many times she had required help and he had been unable to support her in the way she needed. But this time would be different. This time, he would get her through this night.
“Yeah, you can stay with me.”

KakaSaku Fic Rec: Red Strings and Lilac Skies
by @siuilaruinofthegale
Summary: The seduction mission is where they start.
It is not where they end.
Canon-divergent AU where there's a seduction mission between the Kage summit and the war; where Sakura moves on from Sasuke; where love is a hearth fire instead of a wildfire.
This is honestly one of my favourite Kakasaku fics out there. I binged it until some ungodly hour in the morning during a weekday. I do enjoy seduction mission stories between these two and I'm so glad I stumbled upon this. I think it will make you horny, laugh and cry. The ending is beautiful and I'm always so grateful when authors give us closure by telling us where the characters ended up. I love that it follows Kakashi and Sakura's love story from the start, middle and the end. I rarely enjoy re-reading fics unless I am obsessed with the story and I ended up reading this one more than twice, with a specific focus on certain chapters. I hope the crying part doesn't turn you off. It's not a SAD ending per se (not in my opinion), just a natural and realistic one. I don't think I'm doing a good job at explaining this, but I hope you give it a go :) Please pay attention to the tags for TWs.

Hello, I hope you and your family are doing well. I’m also excited for you to come back. Sorry if you have answered this already but since you said you haven’t been in kakasaku fandom for long, how did you come across kakasaku and what made you became a fan?
Ooh, good question!
I've always been a bit of a multi-Saku shipper - although I say "a bit" because so far I've only been into MadaSaku, ItaSaku, SasuSaku, and now KakaSaku. After running out of fics to read for the first 3 ships, I decided to go check out the KakaSaku stuff. I was never against the ship anyway so the transition was pretty easy.
That, and I have also always been interested in the potential dynamic Sakura could share with Kakashi. Somewhere in Part 1 of Naruto, there's an episode (I think when Sasuke is recovering from his hospitalization or around that time) in which Kakashi ties Sasuke up to a tree. Kakashi then explains that he understands how Sasuke feels because he, too, has lost all his loved ones. But then with Team 7, he'd found a new family, and he wanted Sasuke to see that. I don't remember the exact dialogue but that was the main point of the scene. It got me thinking how similar Kakashi is to Sasuke in that aspect and I have always thought that in Team Minato, Kakashi was kind of the Sasuke of the trio (with Rin like Sakura and Obito as Naruto). So I thought that if Sakura could fall for someone ""broken"" like Sasuke, then she can fall for someone like Kakashi too. Not to mention she thinks Kakashi is handsome, so if they'd been the same age then I'm sure she definitely would've crushed on him and tried to take care of him the same way she did with Sasuke.
I wanted to see that potential dynamic between Sakura and Kakashi explored, so I actively sought out KakaSaku fics starting with Moor's works since she's how I became a multi-Saku shipper because of her plethora of multi-Saku fics. Then, I found some gold nuggets like the famous House of Crows fic that explored Sakura and Kakashi's potential relationship exactly as I wanted. That fic as well as many other fics really did well with that, and I also enjoyed the character studies (I'm a HUGE sucker for character study in fics which is why my own multi-chapter fics tend to run long). Those fics and the way they developed KakaSaku really made me fall in love with the ship as they made me understand and believe that KakaSaku could actually work pretty well in canon.
So that's my story of how I fell in love with KakaSaku, so much so that I intend to write plenty of KakaSaku longfics in the long run after Anatomy of Love.
Phew! This was a fun question to answer lol.

Hello! I just jumped on the KakaSaku ship (despite me being as old as Kakashi was when he first got Team 7 🤫) and I have to say, your stories are amazing! I hope to start your fic, The Ballad of Hound and Spider, soon because I'm going through other fics from various other writers first! As I know the Ballad is gonna be a long one, I want to dedicate my free time to consecutively read its chapters! Thank you for writing amazing fics! ♥️
There are plenty of us old farts here in the fandom! ;) I'm so glad you've been enjoying my stories, and I especially hope you enjoy Ballad!

Hi Neko!
I just finished reading Laro and enjoyed it very much ♥️. I have a couple of questions about the story, if you're open to answering them :)
• Mira cautiously looks in the general direction of the kitchen. "Well, it's not everyday she gets to play games like these anymore. Let's let her have this."
>>> i was curious about what Mira meant by this? I had the impression that Sakura is ill, but I can't be sure. 🤔
• "Yes," she nods firmly. She has never been more sure of anything in her life. "What about you? Have you figured out what you want to do yet?" .....It feels as if everyone has gotten their lives figured out except for them. But now that Sakura finally figured out that teaching AP Biology in high school is something she actually wants to do, Kakashi is all that is left
>>>> Also, what job did Kakashi have initially with Genma (chapter 1)? And what did he end up doing eventually after finding himself?
That's all, looking forward to hearing your thoughts ♥️. Take care, Neko!
HIIII!!!!! So psyched to know u enjoyed that lil piece?? That whole thing evolved from a oneshot idea I had of KakaSaku playing Filipino games lmao 🥰🥰 n of course I'm always happy to answer questions abt my fics!!!!
On the first excerpt:
Don't worry, Sakura is just fine 🥰🥰 The reason she doesn't get to play kids' games or parlor games as much anymore is because she and Kakashi are retired and left by themselves in Kakashi's childhood home (which is now their Big Hatake Clan's ancestral home). Their friends from childhood have moved on (YamaGai prolly settled somewhere overseas. ObiRin and GenAnko moved to different places). Meanwhile, their kids have long moved out and started their own families and only come home for the holidays so it's usually v quiet in the Hatake household.
Kakashi and Sakura definitely get competitive doing the most trivial things (who can fold the most laundry, who can find the remote first, etc.) but Sakura definitely misses the energy of playing with a lot of people. But she's grown a lot weaker with age and probably can't play most games that require a lot of activity. So when she sees an opportunity to mess with her kids play, she takes it.
On the second excerpt:
Now is prolly a good time to bring up that I imagined this to be set in the 80s (Hence, no cellphones; emails aren't that common yet so KakaSaku have no way of reaching other than by letter when she moves away. They end up not writing to each other though lmao).
I imagined Kakashi's job is something that has to do with sitting in front of a computer all day... say statistical analysis and data reconfiguration? Yes, that is totally a reference from Friends. If you've watched Friends, then you totally know that Chandler (whose job is statistical analysis n whatnot) is not actually fond of his job. He was probably good at it if he lasted as long as he did but the thing is... he half-asses it. He doesn't really care for it. So that's something I imagined Kakashi was feeling at his old job. And that's why I feel he'd be doing something similar lmao
thank u for allowing me an opportunity to talk about Laro (Games) more!!!! if u have anything else u wanna ask or talk about from that fic (or any fic really), my asques are always open 💖💖 much love, my love!!

For the 'Send me a Naruto pair' I would like to know what is your take on kakasaku, since everyone and their mother have a slightly different view and I'm super-curious about yours! :D
• How their relationship started. ⁃ it happens around the time Kakashi becomes Hokage, when his days and nights are filled with paperwork and Sakura’s warm presence as she helps him through his job he never wanted. Late hours of work end with dinner together and a drink and over time they grow closer and even more comfortable with each other. One night it’s been a particularly busy day and they’re both beyond spent and they end up dozing off on his couch. Kakashi confessed that without her, he wouldn’t have been able to survive this job and they end up kissing.
• Their first kiss ⁃ it’s slow and lazy and they’re both so tired but they feel so full and content.
• How they feel about PDA ⁃ neither are a big fan. Kakashi hates it and Sakura could only tolerate hand holding. Mostly you’d see them strolling together through the market, with her hanging onto his elbow.
• When they work together ⁃ they always work together. And they get shit done because they’re great partners. Sometimes however, they get distracted…
• Who falls for the other first ⁃ Sakura. It happens gradually and then all at once. At first she thinks it’s because of the long hours they spend together but then she starts to notice how much she misses him when they’re apart and how caring and different and misunderstood he is and she knows she’s falling.
• How they are at home ⁃ Reading, mostly. On the same couch or in bed, playing footsie under the sheets until Kakashi abandons his reading and takes up an even more interesting activity instead.
• How they are around their friends ⁃ Everyone says they’re always in their own little world which isn’t far from the truth. In a way; they’re the parents of their friend group as everyone seems to try to kill themselves at every opportunity and it’s up to them to avert crises.
• What they do in their free time ⁃ Kakashi gardens and reads his Icha Icha. Sometimes he busies himself with preparing dinner. Sakura tends to herself, she bathes and conditions her hair and paints her toenails. Together they just lounge around like an old married couple, discussing weekend plans and being fondly exasperated at each other.
• Things they have in common ⁃ their loyalty to their friends, their love for books and their intelligence and love for good riddles. They’re both highly interested in nature and learning and being the best. They also both tend to fall into the self-loath cycle but they have each other to help work out of it.
• Personality traits they find annoying about each other ⁃ sometimes Sakura is too emotional, and Kakashi struggles to deal with that. Sometimes Kakashi is too apathetic and uncaring towards his health and it gets on her every nerve.
• Personality traits they love about each other ⁃ Kakashi is crazy smart, and Sakura is in love with his mind as he is in love with hers. They both love how hardworking each of them is and Sakura adores Kakashi’s dry humour and sarcasm.
• Their first date ⁃ It wasn’t meant to be a ‘date’, they were hanging around at Kakashi’s favourite reading spot by the Hokage mountain as the sun set, yet having to name whatever they are but they end up talking and lying together and it feels like a date.
• Favorite platonic activity ⁃ Kakashi is teaching Sakura how to garden and she’s very excited about it. They spend hours in their backyward everyday. • Domestic headcanons ⁃ Kakashi usually insists on being the one to cook (it turns into a competition of sorts as he had insisted that he was the better cook and now they always try to outdo each other). • Their first fight ⁃ it’s a misunderstanding, they’re still trying to figure out communication between them and Sakura thinks Kakashi views her as too naive to help him with his problems/ or that he doesn’t trust her enough and gets mad. • How they resolve their problems ⁃ while Sakura has explosive temper, Kakashi is a much calmer and rational thinker. He never goads Sakura on in those fights which in a way melts the fight out of Sakura. Usually after Kakashi has said his point of view, the problems are cleared up and they go back to being on good terms.
• What kind of partners they are ⁃ they’re like the evil twins. They know exactly what the other has in mind and they end up causing chaos. All in good fun though.
• Their first time ⁃ both are expecting it any day when it does. The sexual tension had always been there, suffocating and heavy and it was a matter of who caves first. Kakashi loses. It’s explosive and mind blowing and rushed in the first round but slower and savoured and almost lazy in the second one.
• Favorite sex positions ⁃ They’ve tried everything under the sun. Kakashi knows all these strange positions he’s read about and Sakura knows everything about the human body and together they figure out the best ways to extract pleasure from each other but at the end of the day, they enjoy the missionary position best as it allows them to be closer.
• NSFW headcanons ⁃ it’s always agreed that when they bathe together nothing shall happen. That never goes to plan. ⁃ Sakura walks around the house in his shirt and nothing else and Kakashi always takes the bate on any convenient surface within reach. ⁃ They’re both the biggest tease, and they drive each other mad ⁃ Sakura uses her medical justsu to manipulate Kakashi into lasting longer than usual whenever she’s in charge ⁃ Shadow clones! Those come to play sometimes
• How long they date before they get engaged ⁃ Sakura never really brought up marriage. The way they were, she wouldn’t have minded living together like that, always. She never really expected Kakashi to propose, but he does, and by then they’d been together for seven years.
• How many kids they have ⁃ for some reason, Sakura had expected that Kakashi didn’t want kids. And while she loved them, she had made peace with the decision to never have them for the sake of being with him. She’s floored when he brings up the topic, and after they have their first son, Kakashi discovers he really loves being a father. They have three children, a boy and twin girls with Sakura’s eyes.
• What kind of parents they are ⁃ they’re always there for their children but they’re firm believers in letting them learn for themselves while supporting them all the way.
@mishiexd also asked for KS so here! X

Pass the happy along!! When you get this, tell five things that make you happy. Then send it to ten other nice people.
1. KakaSaku -  seeing art about them is my no. 1 way to relax myself after a tough day. Relationship goals at its finest!
2. Creating/Crafting - My train of thoughts runs so fast. Completing something already started before starting something new it’s quite challenging!
3. Time for Myself - I’m an introvert deep in the core. The chance to spend time exclusively for myself is so rare...
    4. Walking in the woods - I try to do it at least once a day. It does wonders when you’re stressed.
5. Music - Every moment of my life/day has its own playlist.
I tag: @laviniahatake  @bouncyirwin @anonymouslydevious65 @allicaj   @someone-who-is-there (even if we had neve really chatted because you’re nice and I enjoy seeing your posts on my dash) @leafmedic - anyone who wanna try. No stress!

Second Chances, The Next Morning (KakaSaku Valentines Day)
Part One - The Setup, Part Two - The Date, A03, Fanfiction
@bouncyirwin Here is part three of my oops I wrote a long story instead of a drabble for KakaSaku Valentines Day!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Breathing hard, Kakashi shoved the door to the gymnasium open and glanced at the time on his phone before shoving it into a pocket. He'd woken up late, so his usual, leisurely jog had turned into a flat out run that left him breathless and red faced. Adjusting the bag on his shoulder, Kakashi gathered his composure before hurrying through the second door. He hoped against hope that he might have beaten—
"You're late," Tenzo observed from the shadows of an area that was hidden from Kakashi's field of vision. He didn't give his friend the satisfaction of startling as he dropped his gym bag on one of the benches that dotted the edges.
Kakashi glanced at the clock on the wall, its bright red letters shocking in the gloom of the room, and shrugged. "I'm only a little late," he observed, unzipping his gym bag so he could dig through the contents. Without turning, he continued. "And you wouldn't believe it, there was this wreck on—"
Tenzo's disbelieving snort interrupted the next words. "Or, you stayed out far too late on your date last night."
Rolling his eyes at the insinuation in Tenzo's tone, Kakashi shed his jacket and hung it on one of the hooks on the wall. "I was home and in bed well before midnight."
Laughing, Tenzo clapped Kakashi on the back. "Yeah, but were you sleeping, or were you enjoying some company for the rest of the night?"
"Sleeping," Kakashi answered. He checked his cellphone once before tucking it into the pocket of his sweatpants. "So, what's on our agenda for the day?
"I'm going to need more information than that." Tenzo nodded when Kakashi reached for a jump rope in the jumbled exercise equipment, indicating that he was on the right track for warming up. But, the man didn't let the line of questions stop. "How did last night go?"
Kakashi rolled his wrists to loosen up before starting a series of quick single and double jumps. It didn't take long for his heart rate to rise in response to the movement. While Kakashi didn't particularly enjoy winter training, it kept his body functional for the more enjoyable activities that came when the weather warmed up. Tenzo had harassed Kakashi until he agreed to meet up at least three to five times during the week for exercise. The days varied, but Saturday was a staple because both of the men were typically free.
Once the sweat stood out on Kakashi's forehead and his body felt warm, he let the jump rope slap against the mats on the floor. He reached for his water bottle and took a long drink of the cool liquid. Tenzo watched him with a knowing look of amusement that made Kakashi uncomfortable. Deciding to draw out the other man's suspense, he grinned. "You know I don't kiss and tell."
Tenzo chuckled and shook his head. "Unless something drastic has changed, you don't kiss at all."
"Ha ha, laugh it up," Kakashi answered, aiming a quick jab at his friend's side.
Tenzo danced backward on the balls of his feet, light and elusive as ever. His movements were smooth and efficient; he'd clearly warmed up while waiting for Kakashi. Tenzo's lips pulled into a frown. "Seriously, how was it?"
Dipping his head to hide the stupid smile that tried to work its way onto his face, Kakashi shrugged. "It was fine." He lifted the carefully wound boxing wraps from his bag and started to work on his left hand without meeting Tenzo's gaze. "The dinner was nice, and the event was surprisingly well planned out."
Tenzo hummed in agreement, bouncing lightly on his toes to keep warm. "You're avoiding my question, which only makes me more curious."
"You know what they say about curiosity," Kakashi quipped, completing the second wrap on his right hand with only a little more difficulty than the left. He flexed his fingers, testing the stretch of the material before nodding.
Tenzo rolled his eyes as Kakashi put on the first of his boxing gloves. "Good thing I'm not a cat, then."
The man held up the second glove and helped Kakashi secure it around his wrist once it was in place. Kakashi sighed. "You aren't going to let it go, are you?"
Kakashi walked toward the bags hanging from the ceiling in one corner of the gym. He flexed his hands inside the glove, trying to to think of a way to answer his friend's question without giving anything away. "Sakura was lovely, attentive, and not what I expected. She's matured a lot over the past few years."
Humming with agreement presumably meant to encourage Kakashi to continue, Tenzo moved to the side to watch him work at the speed bag. A few punches in, the man smiled. "So, when will you see her again?"
Kakashi did his best to keep his tempo steady and smooth lest Tenzo read something in the movement that he didn't intend. Warmth spread through Kakashi's muscles as he continued the steady strikes until his body felt loose and light. He slowed, huffing out a breath. "We didn't talk about it."
Moving away a couple of feet, Kakashi made room for Tenzo in front of the bag. The younger man moved through the same punches that he had to warm up. Tenzo was the one of them who actually enjoyed boxing, and he made it look natural. Kakashi couldn't deny that it took the edge off frustration and anger, but he'd much rather be outside rock climbing, hiking, or going for a run. The gym was necessary evil during the colder months, though.
As Tenzo continued working with the bag, Kakashi stretched in preparation for the inevitable spar that would come next. He didn't dread it as much as he thought he would. A light vibration from his pocket made his face scrunch in confusion. He reached for the feeling, then rolled his eyes at the gloves he'd just put on. Catching the velcro closure in his teeth, Kakashi pulled it loose then clamped his upper arm around the glove to pull his hand free.
Kakashi fished his phone from his pocket with some difficulty because of the wraps. He pressed his thumb against the sensor to unlock it and swiped the screen open. A single message notification waited at the top. Frowning, Kakashi opened it. It worked. I thought about you last night. A second text came through almost immediately. Multiple times.
"Are you smiling at your phone?" Tenzo's voice broke through the momentary elation that flooded Kakashi's system. "Oh my god, are you blushing?"
"No," Kakashi forced his face to wipe the emotion away. He wasn't sure how to respond to Sakura's text, so he left it for a time when Tenzo wasn't watching his every move. "It's just hot in here, and I'm ready to get this spar underway."
Chuckling, Tenzo pulled away from the speed bag. "You're a terrible liar. It's fine to say that you had a good time. Hell, it's even okay to say that you slept with her. I'm not judging."
Kakashi shook his head, sobering at the implication. "We didn't have sex. It isn't like that."
"So, it's not physical," Tenzo repeated, nodding toward the boxing ring that predominated the middle of the gym. The pair had the place to themselves today for a change which allowed them to talk freely. As Kakashi followed him through the ropes, Tenzo's grin deepened. "Damn, are you saying she's in love with you already?"
"She doesn't love me," Kakashi laughed, ignoring the flutter of his heart at the impossible thought. Rin's memory soured the fleeting desire almost as soon as it rose. "She's not that stupid."
Tenzo laughed and dipped his head before reaching out to help Kakashi get his glove back on. "You're probably right. She seemed smarter than average."
"Definitely," Kakashi agreed, squaring up against Tenzo with his body turned to the side to present a smaller target. He weighed his opponent with his gaze, wondering why Tenzo wouldn't let the thing with Sakura go. It wasn't like it mattered; they hadn't talked about dating or going out. The night had been fun, sure, but that didn't mean it was going to be anything more. They'd probably never see each other again.
Kakashi brought his hands up in front of his face and shifted his weight over the balls of his feet to make his movement more fluid. He and Tenzo had trained together for years, so he could practically read the moves before they happened. Jab, cross, jab, jab, hook. Kakashi flowed with the strikes, allowing his mind to wander. The implications behind Sakura's text were impossible to ignore, and the thought brought more heat to Kakashi's cheeks. He'd teased her about wanting her to think about him, but he hadn't meant that way. At least, not seriously.
Trying to come up with a reply was difficult. Did Kakashi respond in kind by admitting that he'd thought of Sakura as well? Did that cross a line that he wanted to keep between them? Did he pretend not to understand the subtext of the comment and ask what Sakura meant? Did he write the whole thing off and continue on the same way that he would have done weeks ago? Did he just ignore it to see if she reached out a second time?
Slipping beneath a quick right hook, Kakashi wondered which response Sakura wanted from him. Almost anything he said would make her more curious about him. Kakashi knew that he could have followed Sakura up to her apartment the previous night, and they would have crossed every line that he cared to draw between them. But, she had respected his decision to stop where they were. Did Kakashi continue holding himself away and playing the logical person, or did he give in to the pressure? Did any of it matter? Sakura's text was clearly meant to evoke a response. Multiple times, it taunted, begging him to acknowledge the unresolved sexual tension between them.
Tenzo slipped to the right and Kakashi circled with him, adrenaline burning through his veins. Boxing helped release some of the tension that wound Kakashi's body tight. He could focus on the natural rhythm of the movements without concentrating too hard on the problem with—another soft buzz ripped Kakashi's attention away from everything except wondering what Sakura said next.
Pain snapped through Kakashi's face, sharp and brilliant as a sunburst. He crashed onto the mat below him, head rebounding against the surface. Darkness swallowed the world. Then, Kakashi blinked at the ceiling in confusion with no idea why he was staring up at it.
"Shit, I'm sorry," Tenzo cursed, crouching beside Kakashi's head. "Are you okay?"
Kakashi's ears rang as he looked around the gym, trying to make logical sense of what happened. Tenzo knelt next to him, pulling his gloves off with an urgency that seemed almost comical. Fingers snapped in front of Kakashi's face, fighting to drag him back to semi-coherence but he had a hard time focusing on the noise. "Come on, I didn't hit you that hard."
"You hit me," Kakashi repeated, still in a half daze from the contact. It was so funny that he almost laughed. The sound burbled in his throat as Tenzo pulled him upright, then the room tipped and spun like a top. Nausea bubbled in Kakashi's stomach, hot and dizzying. He fought it down with a grunt that sobered him somewhat. "You hit me."
"Yes, we've covered that." Tenzo snapped his fingers again, drawing Kakashi's attention to them. "How many fingers do you see?"
Kakashi stared at the wavering image for a second, blinking to clear the immediate blurriness in his vision. "Two."
The hand changed shape. "Now, how many?"
"Three," Kakashi answered, continuing to suppress the nausea that flooded his stomach and throat. He squeezed his eyes shut to push the thought away from him. If he didn't think about it, it wouldn't happen.
When Kakashi opened his eyes again, Tenzo had moved back to give him some space. "Do you think you can get up?"
"You're not a prize fighter or anything. I'm fine," Kakashi grumbled, pushing his hands against the mat to try and stand. Even so, he knew that Tenzo's punches were powerful. The man could have gone on to make a career out of it if he'd wanted to. He usually pulled his punches in spars, though.
Kakashi pushed into a standing position, and the room wobbled with him. The ground pitched under his feet when he tried to move. Tenzo bumped against Kakashi's shoulder, supporting him until they reached a corner of the ring where he could cling to the rope for balance. Kakashi closed his eyes against the dizzy sickness in his stomach. "Mostly fine," he amended, sinking onto the stool that Tenzo produced from somewhere.
It took Kakashi a couple of startled seconds to realize that Tenzo had knelt in front of him and started to remove his gloves with familiar ease. "What are you doing," Kakashi asked in confusion.
"You're done for the day" Tenzo pulled the gloves off and laid them aside, starting to work on the hand wraps. The task was made difficult by the similar wraps on the man's hands.
Kakashi pulled away and started unwinding the fabric on his own. "I just need a minute, then we can get back to—"
"I'm ninety-five percent sure you have a concussion." Tenzo finished pulling off his second wrap without bothering to wind them the way that he normally did. Kakashi wondered if it was frustration or worry that sped his friend's fingers through the movement. "I think you should go get checked out."
Kakashi laughed and shook his head, immediately regretting it when the nausea returned. "No, I'm fine. I didn't even lose consciousness. It was just a lucky punch."
Tenzo leveled Kakashi with a flat stare, then rolled his eyes. "It was a left hook that I telegraphed, but you never noticed. And, you were out for at least a few seconds after it."
"Look at you, using knockout punches in a friendly spar," Kakashi teased, trying to organize the thoughts that were crowding in the back of his mind. He didn't feel great, but he didn't feel terrible either. Surely he would have felt something more than a vague pain in the back of his head after a concussion. "You're growing up."
"You didn't even try to block it," Tenzo complained, shaking his head in frustration as he gathered his equipment from the mat and slid through the ropes to the floor. "You were distracted. You know better than that."
Distracted? Kakashi tried to dredge up the moments before the punch, but they refused to come. Sighing, he followed Tenzo from the ring, bobbling only a little when the room pitched under his feet. "I'm sorry," Kakashi mumbled, rubbing his sore jaw.
Tenzo sighed, worry creasing his features. "You really should go see a doctor, just to make sure everything is squared away. If you won't go to the hospital, at least let me get Tsunade to have a look at you."
Kakashi tipped his head to the side, considering the words for a long moment. Tsunade-shishou would. The memory came slowly; the pieces fit back together in a picture that left Kakashi feeling oddly off balance, even more than the concussion. He ran his tongue across his lips, surprised to taste the coppery tang of blood. "I'm not going to the hospital. If it's a concussion, they'll tell me to rest."
"Which you'll undoubtedly ignore." Tenzo threw his equipment into his bag with an overly dramatic eye roll. "Do you think you have a concussion? Or, did it just rattle you?"
Raising one shoulder in a shrug, Kakashi packed up his wraps, gloves, and jump rope. "I mean, isn't that pretty much the same thing?"
Tenzo pulled a black hoodie over his head, then slung his bag across one shoulder. "You know that you got the finger count wrong, right?"
Kakashi blinked at the words, and the soft pain in the back of his mind ramped up to a slightly more noticeable stab. He sighed in defeat. "Okay, fine, I might have a concussion, but the point still stands. All the doctor is going to tell me to do is to get some rest."
"You lost consciousness, briefly, but it still happened. You had double vision, your balance is off, and you're in pain, sick to your stomach, or both." Tenzo ticked off the points on his fingers, and Kakashi studied them to make sure the number matched the reasons.
Kakashi frowned. "How do you know I'm—"
"The way you squeeze your eyes and tense your jaw every few seconds," Tenzo interrupted, with a rueful shake of his head. "You've got a pain tell, old man."
"Hey, woah," Kakashi chuckled, holding up his hands as if deflecting another blow. "Isn't it enough that you already knocked me out once today?"
A grin slid onto Tenzo's lips as he shook his head and threw an arm around Kakashi's shoulders. "Come on, let's get you checked out, then I'll leave you alone for the rest of the day, probably."

Hello!! I just came across your fic 'Running Out of Reasons' and well, long story short, it is now 5am ON A WORK DAY and I cant put it down!! 😩😩😩. It is SOO GOOD. I always tell myself to avoid reading fics until they are complete to keep myself from going crazy waiting for updates but oh my god, yours is amazing and I'm so glad I started! (I am also a SUCKER for modern AUs and there just isn't enough Kakasaku AUs,specially Uni ones, out there for me) I also LOVE how long each chapter is! Like, it really FEELS like it is worth an entire chapter , you know what I mean? Holy shit, you're amazing! 🥰 i'm on chapter 22 right now and Idk whether I will be able to go back to sleep at this point.
That's all! I just wanted to pop in and tell you that. It is so good and I think you're a great writer! ❤. Ooh I also just thought of a question: I noticed that you listed the total number of chapters until this story ends (great idea to not end it at graduation in my opinion, im glad their story gets to live beyond that), does this mean you have an outline for the chapters ahead, or are you just planning on limiting the story to another 10 chaps? Sorry, im always curious about the writing process for each author and im always wondering if everyone outlines their work every chapter and knows their ending. It's cool if you dont want to answer, though! No problem 🥰🥰
omg omg omg 😭😭😭😭😭 YOU MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!!!! I have a huge smile on my face, I'm so happy you liked the fic so much!! and YAAAYYY you like the long chapters!!!!!!!!! sometimes I get complaints about it but I can't write short chapters 😂😂😂😂 I'm really happy you like them!!!!!!!
thank you so so much for letting me know all this! that's incredibly sweet of you, you literally made my day 💚
about the question!!!!! first of all, I'm really glad you like the idea of the story continuing after Sakura's graduation!!! I'm really excited about that!!!!!
so 😂😂😂😂 I'm a huge fucking mess I'm laughing over here thinking of how to answer this
I do have an outline for all of the next chapters! BUT I kinda hate them 😂😂😂😂😂 AAAHHHHHH
that's honestly one of the reasons why I started this hiatus, I just fucking hated everything that I was thinking of and I just wanted to throw my computer out of the window 😂😂 it's been like two months since I stopped thinking about it and I'm finally getting to a place where I want to open the outline doc and face it again (still not quite there yet tho 😅)
but yeah, I technically do have an outline of the next 10 chapters. maybe when I face them again I'll end up changing something or adding something and then the number of chapters ahead might change, or I might not change anything and realise that maybe I didn't have any reason to hate what I planned 😂 as I said, I'M A MESS AAAAA
you did ask about the writing process, so I'll give you more insight into that 😄 when I started writing this fic I had absolutely no fucking clue of where it was gonna go. like, at all, I knew nothing. I just sat down and wrote and then the story kinda started writing itself. it was really really awesome, until I got to chapter 17 and I freaked out 😂😂😂😂
after that, I sat down and decided to start planning ahead. and I did, I planned quite a few chapters but just ideas, yk? and then when I got to chapter 21 (I think, don't remember exactly) I had another breakdown and just sat down and planned every little detail. and then now at ch27 I just decided I hate everything and stopped thinking about it until I'm ready again
so that's the overall of my chaotic process 😂😂😂 I won't abandon the fic, that's a certainty! I just need a little bit more time to get my head in a place where I want to focus on that again and not throw my computer out of the window, you know?
but omg you made me SO HAPPY today! I'm so so happy you're enjoying the fic!!!! chapter 22 is my absolute FAVOURITE so far, and I really wanna know your thoughts when you catch up to ch27!!!!!!!!!! eheheheheheeheh 💚💚💚💚
