A reunion between family
So, not sure if this is completely what you wanted, but I tried my best.
This is the Secret Santa gift for @a-little-dreamer-s-world
@secret-sanders-sized
Well here we go. If something isn't working correctly, or if you cant read something, then @ me and ill try to fix it.
-------------------------------
Virgil groaned as he woke up in his cabin. It was a normal morning, with light streaming through his window, Remus screaming in his ear, the birds chirping, - He sighed as he sat up and grabbed Remus. Virgil pinched the back of his sleep shirt to pick him up and set him on his palm.
“About time you woke up!” Remus chirped. “I’ve been up since the sun rose.”
“Are you that excited about visiting town today?” Virgil laughed quietly, making Remus bounce up and down slightly.
“YES!” Remus crowed “I need to find new stuff! New art supplies! New-“
Virgil frowned and interrupted. “Are you going to paint my kitchen again Remus? While I do love you being here, if you paint my kitchen with scenes of bloody, gorey murder again I will throw you out.”
He laughed. “Naw. I won’t do it again- At least not to your kitchen.”
Virgil sighed and shook his head. “Whatever. I’m going to cook breakfast. Try not to break something please.”
Remus shrugged. “I won’t break something on purpose. That’s for sure. That cast on my leg didn’t let me do anything! I couldn’t even chase that Goose outside!”
Virgil snorted in laughter before standing up. He set Remus on the shelf beside the bed before going towards the kitchen.
Virgil's cabin was a quaint thing. It was only three rooms, a bathroom, a bedroom, and a joined kitchen and living room. He didn’t even have much in the way of keepsakes, mostly just books and things to help him if he had an anxiety attack. It was just like any other cabin out there, except that everything was giant, and that there were shelves everywhere and holes in the walls. That was so Remus could get around without Virgil carrying him.
Virgil was just finishing cooking some bacon and eggs when Remus popped out of a hole beside the table.
“Breakfast ready?” He had calmed down a bit and was yawning.
“Yep. Just let it cool a bit and let me split some up for you.”
He broke of a small piece of bacon and cut some of the eggs apart before putting it on a small plate. Or it was small for him. For Remus it was still the size of a small table.
“Thanks bud!” Remus yelled before he literally shoved the eggs into his mouth.
Virgil watched in slight disgust as he barely chewed his mouthful before grabbing more.
Once they were done eating breakfast and getting ready for the day, they were getting ready to go to town and we’re checking down what they had and needed.
“Vee, you have your headphones?” Remus yelled.
“Yep. You have your jacket? Shoes?”
“Yep!”
“Okay. I have the list of what we need. Let’s go.”
Virgil picked up Remus and put him in the pocket of his jacket, before walking out.
They walked through the woods for a while before they heard the town up ahead. Virgil slowed, almost cowed by the sound from up ahead, but Remus suddenly yelling curses at something drew his attention away.
He was yelling at a tree. Of course he was. “Asshole, wait you don’t have an asshole I’ll-“
“Remus.” Virgil said in a slightly scolding tone. “there are going to be children nearby. Please don’t.”
He sighed. “Fine. I’ll try to wait till we're on our way back.”
Virgil rolled his eyes with humor.
They went into town, and Remus quieted down. Even he knew better than to yell at other giants. A lot of them weren’t as fond of humans as Virgil was. They walked into the store, and Virgil walked around with a cart, grabbing what he and Remus needed. With Remus of course asking every second for different things that they didn’t need. Usually he was jesting, however today one of his requests was cut off as he gasped. Virgil looked down quickly atb him, making sure he hadn’t hurt himself. He had a hand over his mouth and was looking at a few cages. Virgil winced as he saw that there were humans in there. Apparently the shopkeeper decided to start selling Human pets.
“Do you want to leave Remus?” Virgil asked quietly, aware Remus was shocked and probably scared.
His answer only made Virgil more worried.
“N-No. I need to look closer.” Virgil was worried but walked closer. Another giant saw him, and scowled at Remus in his pocket.
“Did you steal him?” they asked brashly.
“No.” Virgil responded. “I have had him for a while. I came in to look at other humans to see if any would be a good friend for mine.” He must be a salesperson for the humans.
Remus winced at how Virgil was speaking, but knew he had to speak that way in front of other giants. His eyes tracked back to that one other human, curled up in the corner of his cage, hands over his ears.
Virgil stood a little straighter and said “Now do you want a sale on a human or not.”
The salesperson scowled before sighing. “Sorry ive had a couple teenagers try to steal them. Which one do you want?”
Virgil looked down at Remus and said “To keep my humans from fighting, I believe ill let mine choose.”
The salesperson nodded and Virgil took Remus out of his pocket. “Point to the human you want me to buy.” Virgil muttered quietly. Remus pretended to look over them before pointing at the one he had been staring at earlier.
Virgil nodded and said “I want that one please.”
Remus retreated to the pocket as Virgil and the Salesperson figured out a price. Pretty soon, the human was being put in a box - with lots of kicking and screaming - Virgil had payed for all the food they needed, and they were on their way home.
On the way home Virgil quietly asked Remus why he had wanted him to buy a human. Remus answered quietly “I know him Vee. I couldn’t just leave him there. Hes, he's my-” He couldn't seem to continue. Virgil nodded and they continued home.
Once they got to the cabin, Virgil put the food in the kitchen, put Remus on the table, then put the box on the table too.
Virgil opened the box, and reached in, prompting a scream from the human inside. Virgil scowled as he managed to snag the shirt of the human. “I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm just getting you out of this box.”
As he lifted the human out of the box, he noticed that it- he looked like remus. He saw the resemblance and it clicked in his head. That's why he was so out of sorts. This must be family.
He plopped the human gently onto his palm. The human was frozen, looking up at Virgil. “What's your name dude?” Virgil asked him.
“W-Why do you care?” The human was trying to be brave, but was visibly terrified.
Virgil frowned and the human froze before saying “I-Im Roman. N-Now, What are you going t-to do with me y-you giant fiend!”
Virgil chuckled at the audacity of this hu- of Roman. This was making the brother theory much more filled out.
“I bought you because my human asked me to. Now. Do you want to see him or stay in my hand all day?”
Roman winced but took a moment to think about his options. Virgil saw him look around the room and his eyes widen at all the shelves and holes in the walls. He hesitantly looked at Virgil and said “You- You treat humans well?”
Virgil nodded as he started bringing his hand slowly to the table. “I would like to think I do, Roman.”
Roman hopped off the hand and Virgil looked behind him. “I believe you already know each other.”
Roman stiffened as he turned around because, why would they know each other-
His thought stopped mid sentence as he registered the man standing before him, with his green eyes and mischievous smirk. “R-Remus?” He asked not believing his eyes.
“Hiya bro! How- how was your trip to our home?” Remus tried to stay upbeat but it was obvious he was worried. They stood still for a moment before Roman lunged at Remus, and Remus caught him in a big hug. “I didn't think I would see you again.” Roman muttered crying. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too Ro Ro.” Remus smiled at him.
Remus pulled away a little and said “Vee? Will you get a tissue? Also get some more blankets beside my bed?”
Roman froze at the thought that Remus actually just asked this giant to do something but was surprised when the giant laughed. “Sure Remus. Have fun reuniting. Try to explain to him how stuff works please, I don't want him flinching every time I move. It makes me feel bad.” He got up and stretched before saying “And then I need a nap.”
He left the room. “THANKS VEE VEE!” Remus hollered after the giant.
“Vee Vee?” Roman said questioningly.
“Yeah. His real names Virgil but I call him Vee.” Remus replied. “Now C’mon! Lemme show you around!”
-------------
It wasn't until that christmas that Roman ever really got over his fear of Virgil, but that christmas was warm, and found Roman and Remus curled up in a Hollow in the wall as Virgil drank some hot cocoa. As Virgil curled up on the couch, he thought to himself how much happier Remus was now, and what a great family they were together. Virgil fell asleep on the couch to the whistling of snow outside, but inside was warm, happy, and full of familial love.

The End of Time
The End of Time (Doctor Who) Doctor Who Christmas special Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part One & Two (DVD) This action-packed two part finale is the blockbuster final story of thetenth Doctor, David Tennant, written by Russell T Davies, the mastermind behind the rebirth of the modern Doctor Who. The story will culminate in the dramatic regeneration of the Doctor, givfans their first glimpse of the eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. A milestone in the history of the enduring UK sci-fi series Doctor Who is reached with this two-part serial: David Tennant, whose portrayal of the iconic Time Lord is arguably the most popular since the program's launch in 1963, ended his tenure as the Tenth Doctor, along with writer-producer Russell T. Davies, who revived the series to great acclaim in 2003. The End of Time pits the Doctor against his greatest foe, the Master (a terrifically wicked John Simm), as well as the Time Lords themselves (led by Timothy Dalton as an imperious Lord President), who seek to reverse their destruction at the hands of the Doctor at the end of the Time War. The crux of the plot is good old-fashioned adventure, with the Doctor and companion Wilf (Bernard Cribbins) attempting to stay one step ahead of the universe-wide doom the Time Lords hope to unleash, but the real raison d'être for The End of Time is to give Tennant a hearty sendoff for his four years as the Doctor. Davies provides a fond and, at times, quite emotional conclusion for his hero, complete with return engagements by many of his friends and companions (among them Billie Piper's Rose, Freema Agyeman's Martha, and even Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith) before his regeneration into the Eleventh Doctor, the much-discussed Matt Smith. As finales go, The End of Time is solid science fiction from start to finish, and most likely, will leave a few Who fans feeling a bit choked up after Tennant's final scene. The supplemental features on The End of Time are more plentiful than on most of the Tennant/Who DVD releases, though still not quite on par with the archival disc presentations. Tennant is front and center, naturally, for most of the extras; he's on both commentary tracks, with Catherine Tate (Donna) and director Euros Lyn on part 1 and Davies, the amusing Simm, and Lyn on part 2. Both are exceptionally light and upbeat, as are his video diaries, which cover all of the 2009 special episodes. Then it's off to Comic-Con with Tennant and Davies for a 20-minute capsule of their appearance at the 2008 edition of the pop culture juggernaut, as well as some cute BBC Christmas IDs and a handful of deleted and mostly forgettable scenes. Episodes of the behind-the-scenes series Doctor Who Confidential round out the two-disc set. --Paul Gaita
BBC Presents: Doctor Who End of Time - In US Cinemas 8/7/19
It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly ten years since David Tennant left Doctor Who in his heart-breaking finale “The End of Time”. To commemorate the occasion, BBC Studios and Fathom Events invite you to relive the agony and ecstasy of this absolutely thrilling story on the big screen. You’ll see the full two-part “The End of Time” including appearances by fan favourites Billie Piper, Catherine Tate, John Simm, Elisabeth Sladen, John Barrowman, and many more! In “The End of Time,” the Doctor’s psychotic nemesis the Master (Simm) has been reborn. Reunited with his friend Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins), the Doctor desperately tries to locate the Master only to find that an even greater danger is approaching. As a terrible shadow falls across the entire universe, an ancient trap closes around the Earth. With the sound of drums growing louder, the Doctor and Wilf must fight alone. But sacrifices must be made, and a deadly prophecy looms: “He will knock four times.” The evening will also feature a brand new interview with David Tennant in which he reflects on his time in Doctor Who and all that has come since. You won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime special cinema event!

Seigura October 2019 - DIALOGUE+ Interview
Tumblr media
Uchiyama Yurina
April 28 / Aichi Prefecture
Stardust Promotion
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. The steps are really cute and pop, so I'd say "everything". But, if I had to pick one, it'd be how every one of us makes a different peace sign when that part of the choreography comes up. I think it really shows off our different personalities!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. When we first started shooting the fireworks scene, there was so much smoke, and I couldn't see anything... But we were given detailed advise on how to best position ourselves and how to hold the fireworks, so we managed to shoot some really nice scenes! It was fun!
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I want to revolutionize my memory.
  Hieda Nene
January 15 / Kanagawa Prefecture
81 Produce
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. There's this part in the choreography where I'm facing Manatii (Murakami Manatsu) in the first chorus, and Sappi (Miyahara Satsuki) in the second chorus. That's my favorite part! There are quite a few parts where I turn to face someone else in the choreography, and I grin at myself with a "She's so cute..." every time. Also, the steps during the guitar solo. Those were difficult!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. We were given real fruits and snacks for the picnic scene, and halfway through the shoot we actually started eating some of the food. It was much more delicious than usual!
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I want to "revolutionize" my bangs. They didn't listen to me at all during the shoot (laughs). Since I was sweating, they kept getting messy during the shoot! I always need to bother the makeup artists when that happens, so I want to do something about it......!
  Moriya Kyouka
May 22 / Nagano Prefecture
IAM Agency
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. It's a really upbeat song, so I did my best to let that feeling shine through, up to my fingertips! We actually got to decide the choreography for the solo parts by ourselves! Each and every one of us managed to come up with some really cute choreography, so do look out for that!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. The part with the water guns. Our group was already naturally close, and the shoot ended just as we were having fun with them. And the fireworks! Personally, I'm glad that I managed to do something summer-like for the first time this year.
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I want to do a tour with DIALOGUE+ someday. I feel like I'll have fun with this bunch even during long trips (laughs). I'll do my best to get many more people interested in us so that this dream will come true someday!
  Ogata Yuuna
July 31 / Hiroshima Prefecture
Im Enterprise
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. The part that goes "Come on and follow us!" at the end of the chorus. We were all told that our hip movements look really good, so look out for that!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. The water gun fight was really memorable. I really wanted to try doing something like that at least once, since you see it so often in anime and other shows! It was so fun that I almost forgot we were doing a shoot for a moment!
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I want to revolutionize my mental fortitude! I still get embarrassed easily, so I'd like to become someone who can pull any joke off at the drop of a hat, just like Manatii!
  Takamura Ayaka
February 5 / Tokyo Prefecture
EARLY WING
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. There are aliens in the MV! There's a part where it shakes its tentacles, so try to find that part!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. The water gun fight! The last time I played with water guns was in elementary school, so I let everything out during that scene! The other members said that my voice sounds like a six-year-old's during the recording, but don't tell me I looked like a six-year-old during the water gun fight too?!
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I want a revolution that gives me the ability to eat as much delicious food as possible without gaining weight!!
  Miyahara Satsuki
October 28 / Niigata Prefecture
81 Produce
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. Remembering the dance formation was really difficult...... Where we're standing and facing are different in the first, second, and last chorus, so it was a mess until we got used to it. That's why I'd like everyone to look out for the product of our hard work!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. The picnic scene! There were all kinds of food there, and we hesitated to take any at first. The interesting part was how everyone just started eating the fruits and cookies right after the staff told us it was OK to eat.
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I really can't stand insects. Since the MV was shot in mid-summer, whenever cicadas came close to us, I'd grab on to Mayuyun (Iizuka Mayu), who's good with insects. It'd be nice if I could experience a revolution and overcome my fear of insects. I'll look forward to that after my reincarnation (laughs).
  Iizuka Mayu
April 15 / Saitama Prefecture
Sun Music Production
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. The parts where we look at one other. You can see that in the first verse, the chorus, and even the bridge, and I always break out into a smile during those parts. Also, we came up with our own choreography for the solo and duet parts, so look out for that as well!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. The picnic shoot! I've watched quite a few idol MVs, and I really love scenes where girls have fun eating, so a shoot like this was something I've always wanted to do! I ended up asking "Can we actually eat this?" in a loud voice (laughs).
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I want to revolutionize my sleep! I used to prioritize looks when choosing a pillow, but as I grew older, I started realizing the importance of sleep. I recently bought a bedding set that athletes use, so I hope to increase my quality of sleep in the future.
  Murakami Manatsu
August 24 / Kanagawa Prefecture
Arise Project
Q1. What's something to look out for in the choreography?
A1. The part where I make a heart with Mayuyun! We tried our best to match up in that scene, so please watch it over and over again. We also came up with the other solo and duet dances by ourselves! They really reflect what each of us feel, so do look out for that!
Q2. What's the most memorable aspect of today's shoot?
A2. The scene where we climb up onto a hill and look back! All of us turning back at the count of three just bursts of youthful energy...... And everyone was so cool...... I put on my best smug face while turning back! Do look out for my smug face!
Q3. What's one thing that you want to "revolutionize" about yourself?
A3. I want to revolutionize how I always get words mixed up. I'm the type of person to remember words by their shape, so I've made mistakes like saying 「フフープ (hula hoop)」 instead of 「ハープ (harp)」, or 「うれしいな (happy)」 instead of 「憂いなし (no worries)」. I'm in an industry where I'm constantly surrounded by words, so I hope to become someone who can speak accurately!

2018 top albums
Okay, so hopefully you read (& enjoyed listening to) my top EPs list, this one is a little longer, and hopefully a little prettier. They’re ranked 10 -> 1, with my honourable mentions up front here. I hope you enjoy at least some of the music I loved this year, and don’t find my writing unbearable. Once again, I’ve included spotify links for each album if and youtube links for my favourite tracks of each album.
honourable mentions:
Tumblr media
alison wonderland - awake/remxies
standouts: good enough & no (umru & kid froopy remix)
This was really tough for me to place, it would have likely made it onto the top 10 list had it not been for how much I loved the remix album that accompanied this album, and including both felt like cheating. Despite her trap banger roots, Alison Wonderland manages to hit that dance/cry sweet spot over and over on this project, from the manic banger Good Enough, with her gorgeous cello backed by an anxiety inducing rising bassline, to the anxious "is it good enough!?" ringing out, to hip-hop influenced High, to the big room trap banger that is Happy Place. It's got all of that and more on the base album, and the collection of remixes that were done afterward by her contemporaries managed to even further diversify the track list, while still keeping enough of the original to be recognizable. Even if you don't like electronic music, listen to No (umru & Kid Froopy Remix) and tell me that xylophone lead isn't catchy as all hell.
Tumblr media
ross from friends - family portrait
standout: pale blue dot
A mainstay in the lo-fi house scene, Ross From Friends released his first full length project this year, and it gave everything I had hoped. Lovely, danceable grooves, ace production, and the feeling of being transported, if momentarily, to another plane of existence. If you have even the slightest inclination towards electronic music, check out Pale Blue Dot.
Tumblr media
joji - ballads 1
standout: rip
The transition George Miller aka Filthy Frank aka joji has made throughout his young career is pretty spectacular. From absurdist comedy to the angsty, low key R&B on this project is pretty amazing, and while he certainly exhibits a lot of similar traits to the S A D B O Y aesthetic that has taken over mainstream hip-hop the last few years, he does it with enough of his own flavour that it's hard to discount that it is his. RIP and Attention are two of the most overtly sad songs I've heard in a long time, both in lyrical content, as well as production and the slurring and gravely vocal delivery. While tracks like Can't Get Over You throw in some needed dancey beats, while still maintaining that raw emotional delivery and content that defines this project so much.
top 10:
10
Tumblr media
jizue - room
standout: grass
I can't explain this album, I've spent the last 30 minutes attempting it, and I just can't. It's an instrumental album from Japanese group jizue that blends elements of jazz, math-rock and hardcore into...whatever this project is. I love it, but it's just the right side of complex and listenable to serve as the perfect background music, and still manage to stand on it's own. Check it out, maybe someone can explain it to me.
9
Tumblr media
anderson .paak - oxnard
standout: brother's keeper
It took a while for Anderson .Paak to hit it big, but even back when I first heard his stuff, it was pretty apparent that it was only a matter of time before he hit it. Not only are his producer chops on display in full effect here, from rattling kicks and afro-soul influenced melodic leads, to the heavy jazz influences, all layered with a touch of 90s hip-hop. Dr. Dre helped with production and executive produced, and the influences of that era shine through heavily. Speaking of, .Paak's vocal performance is entirely different from what I had come to expect, and covers a wide array of topics, from the politically charged 6 Summers, to the sensual The Chase, that feels a lot it needs to be halfway an action scene in an 80s movie, to the savage Pusha-T feature Brother's Keeper. While .Paak himself is more a singer than rapper, his voice and flow fits the aesthetic of this project, and the brilliance of the production variety while still maintaining the feel of a cohesive project. From the all star feature list, to the frequent use of beat change-ups midway through tracks, back to front this project demands your attention.
8
Tumblr media
rl grime - nova
standout: ucla
My first listen of this album resulted in me thinking "eh, this is just a bunch of electronic tracks", they weren't bad, but I didn't really feel it until my 3rd or 4th listen. RL Grime's ability as a producer has never been in question, and his live shows the stuff of legends. Throw into that with his yearly, highly anticipated Halloween 7 mixtape, featuring a vocal open by Shaq, he didn't need to come through with a project as diverse as this, and yet here we are. He manages to flow easily from big room trap Feel Free and Pressure, to the more housey Shrine and the emotional Atoms and the manic instrumental Rainer. It was really hard for me to pick just one favourite because of how cohesive this album has ended up feeling for me, like being taken on someone else's emotional roller coaster ride. But I've settled on the trashy, trappy R&B UCLA, where the lyrics manage to come across a little insecure, while the beat makes up for it with astounding bravado, and massive trap drops.

chvrches - love is dead
standout: deliverance
I've written before how vital live music events are to my enjoyment of certain genres & music acts, and if I'm being honest,  this album wouldn't be on here if I hadn't had the chance to see CHVRCHES live this year at the Commodore. It's a good album, don't get me wrong, it's got all polish of their previous two albums, and even more varied song selection with the more typical synth-pop bops with Miracle and Heaven/Hell, there's a huge change up with the moodier God's Plan and the incredibly sad and moving instrumental ii. Even Get Out, one of the lead singles from this project is laced with a lot darker subject matter and musical elements. Seeing Lauren Mayberry dance under neon lights to the intro rift of Graffiti will stick in my mind for years to come, and that feeling is what this kind of music is all about.

soccer mommy - clean
standout: cool
My musical tastes have been diverse for as long as I can remember, but this style of grungy, lo-fi bedroom pop-rock has never really been on my radar before. That being said, Nashville native Soccer Mommy has a lot of what I look for in music, catchy hooks, lyrics brimming with emotion and someone willing to take risks. While it's undeniable that this is far from a production masterpiece, which I don't understand in 2018 honestly, the great song writing and Sophie Allison's distinctive voice and nonchalant delivery gives me that summer feeling no matter what time of the year it is. Cool is one of my most listened to songs of the year by a long shot, with it's upbeat music and sad lyrics, it sounds like what teenage regret felt like. Scorpio Rising on the other hand, covers a lot of the same topics, but it manages to do to it in a very different way, sort of in a Slow Dance On The Inside by Taking Back Sunday kinda feel.

rezz - certain kind of magic
standout: teleportal
Even with my list this year being highly varied, I think this might be the least approachable album on either this or my EP list. Rezz has managed to create a cult of personality around herself in a way very few electronic musicians ever manage through her phenomenal set construction, heavy emphasis on showmanship with lights and video during her live sets, and brilliant production. Add on top of that very few artists are making this style of music anywhere close to this caliber, and you end up with a dominant force of heavy basslines and dark aesthetics. If you have ever had any interest in dubstep, be it the traditional UK variant or the trashy late 2000s-era bedroom-produced bangers, you will likely love this album. It's no surprise that deadmau5 signed her in 2016 given that her style of building up layers and layers of effects and sonic elements, only to cut them all out to isolate a heavy drop or gorgeous orchestral melody is very reminiscent of the house legend himself.

hinds - i dont run
standout: tester
Spanish all girl quartet came out of no where for me, but once I was into their vibe, I didn't look back. They sing in English (mostly), but their accents taint all their lyrics with just a little touch exotic flavour, giving their cacophonous musical style one more element to throw into the mix. They sort of sound like a mix of The Velvet Underground, and the Strokes, with a modern pop twist, and the fact they're women making, or more accurately, fighting the transition from care free 20s, to the reality of their 30s comes through in spades. The variety of their voices, and their writing styles gives this album a distinctly personal touch, but not so much it's impossible to relate to. This album is perfect for sitting in the sun on a lazy afternoon and letting the entire project wash over you, if I had to pick just one track though I'd go with Tester, a track about navigating complex, undefined personal relationships, and coping with it however possible.

let's eat grandma - im all ears
standout: it's not just me
I knew that PC Music wouldn't stay off my list entirely this year, the entire label seem to be steering pop music on the whole, and the production influences from SOPHIE fly in pretty fast on the glitchy-noisey delicious mess that is Hot Pink, the opening track. They follow that up with my favourite track of the year in It's Not Just Me, with the angsty lyrics, the way they seem to just float over the top of the beat that manages to be both groovy (dig the dance moves in the music video) and still challenge the listener with complexity and a touch of cacophony. While these two 17 year old girls from some random town in the UK might only be releasing their second project, and the lyrical content is for sure written by 17 year old girls, they show a capacity for having a vision for a track and getting it across in a truly astonishing way. They manage to blend genres, topics and feelings seemingly effortlessly, and I can't get enough of it!

the midnight - kids
standout: america 2
The nostalgic, synth-pop, retro-wave duo The Midnight came through with an ode to the 80s and 90s, laced with modern sensibilities. Stick these tracks over some 90s action movies, and they won't feel out of place, nor will they as your cruise into the sunset of 2018. With lyrics that are wistful for the past, and aware of the fact it will never come back, they manage to make you want to groove along, while slightly pricking that part of your brain that says "hey, is there where you thought you'd be when you were 12?". The whole project is laced with news clips from the 80s and 90s, talking about how exciting, and how terrifying the future looked. It's easy to forget even in those less connected times, sometimes all you could do was blast the stereo, drive into the night, and hold onto the best parts of your past, and try and be optimistic about the future.

brockhampton - iridescence
standout: tonya
Brockhampton is one of those music groups that is such a cultural phenomenon, it'll inspire kids making music in their bedrooms for a long time. No hip-hop group has made such a massive impact since Wu-Tang, and we all know they ain't nuthin' to fuck with. Both the group and each member manages to display astonishing range as they move from emotional ballads like the brilliant Tonya to bangers like New Orleans, they manage to make you want to dance to the driving basslines and clever lyrics, only to snap change to the slow and deeply emotional tracks like San Marcos. From Kevin Abstract's masterminding, to Dom's undeniably amazing bars, to the dreamy Matt Champion and the angst filled bearface, it's easy to see why this album is so diverse. What's harder to understand is how cohesive they manage to blend it all together, trappy vocal effects on top of acoustic guitar, the gospel influences, it's all mashed together into perfection. Tonya was on heavy rotation this year, with it's haunting vocals, brilliant piano melodies, and the change up it's so hard not to feel the heart that went into this project.
annnnnnnnd we’re done! I hope you listened to a shit load of good music this year, and I hope some of this resonates with you. Happy Holidays, have a good New Year, roll on 2019.

The End of Time

But sacrifices must be made, and a deadly prophecy looms: “He will knock four times.” The evening will also feature a brand new interview with David Tennant in which he reflects on his time in Doctor Who and all that has come since. From the particle accelerator in Switzerland, where scientists seek to probe regions of time we cannot see, to lava flows in Hawaii which have overwhelmed all but one home on the south side of Big Island; from the disintegration of inner city Detroit, to a Hindu funeral rite near the place of Buddha's enlightenment, Mettler explores our perception of time.
