Hey question, why is the 'Viz translation' the most reliable out of the other translations? Like you reference them however they defeat popular quotes like "You're annoying" to "You make me sick". I'm not a SS fan btw
Well because VIZ is one of the biggest professional translators of manga out there:
Tumblr media
and the official distributors of the English Naruto manga in the United States.
They also did Bleach
Tumblr media
and even the likes of Dragon Ball
Tumblr media
They’re not even limited to shounen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s their website here. They even distribute English-subbed/dubbed anime
So, since they are a giant company that is directly linked to the Japanese distributors and authors, they’re going to release the best, most accurate translations because their translators are going to be a mix between Japanese residents and American residents that are interviewed and paid for their skills in both languages. Plus there are even more people who proof read these translations before they are released.
Then you have fan translations who are people made up of 2-10 people who just translate manga chapters before they even come out in Japan. These people also take advantage of the lag between Japanese release and English release which could take up to a week.
The most famous examples of fan translators are Mangastream and Mangapanda. They vary in accuracy so its really up to you and your experience with them on who is better. There are many more out there as well. Also these tend to be much more rushed to get them out as soon as possible to accuracy is not really on the top of their list of priorities.
The main difference between these two is that Fan translations are illegal. In fact all the scans of manga they get is leaked from mysterious Japanese sources.
Now to combat fan translators, official companies like VIZ started releasing translations as they come out instead of having that week or more long lag but the fact that they still charge for their services doesn’t change anything much.
So in short: One translation is legit (Viz, TokyoPop, DarkHorse)  and one is illegal (Mangastream, Mangapanda, etc) and most likely inaccurate.

the massive problem with this scene in boruto feat sasuke
so this scene actively made me attempt to strangle myself because it was so inaccurately out of character [bullshit] that it deserves to be scrapped from the series entirely and never mentioned again.
a lot of you are going to recognize this scene and I don’t need to watch the episode [because I haven’t / won’t] to explain how the context destroys sasuke uchiha’s character entirely.
by the way this is a scene analysis and none of the pictures are credit to me. therefore if some translation is off then please proceed to correct me. however I’m trusting whoever subtitled the text onto the photos, because it looks official.
let’s get started.
Tumblr media
this scene of sasuke [speaking to boruto] utterly baffled me. this line alone. because this is the studio one again painting sasuke as the villain. sasuke also now for some unknown reason now believes that he too was once a villain. this is the same character who went on an “atonement” journey to find peace within himself and the meaning of life / shinobi’s / the world. and here they give him a line that negates the entire reason behind this journey altogether. sasuke still truly believes he was a villain and didn’t heed the advice of others. except there was no advice from others that sasuke sought answers from. unless they mean when kakashi told him to give up on avenging his clan. or sakura who insisted she tag along in his departure in part 1 and at the end of the fourth great ninja war in part 2.
and last, what advice did sasuke not even heed that wasn’t already his personal decision? sasukes entire character was based on his own decisions, found what he felt was reasonable/justified because he had no other choice. I’m sorry but being left the lone standing clan member at the age of six doesn’t exactly give you very many options on what to grow up to become, especially when your role model was your greatest enemy disguised as a good brother.
this translation really fucking bothered me, if you couldn’t already tell.
Tumblr media
next we have this line which also negates everything that became of sasukes character. they are translating this line to be read as “absolute power corrupts absolutely” [quote from george orwell’s animal farm but it works for this scenes meaning of interpretation] and this is entirely wrong. sasuke had no literal fucking choice—itachi approached him and whooped his whole ass and said “get stronger or die” and what was eleven year old sasuke supposed to do? roll over and perish? no, he chose power for his own survival. because his back was against a wall. they make it seem like sasuke went out against his will to obtain all this power for no absolute goddamn reason. and they are in turn making him REGRET this decision, one he had NO choice in deciding. absolutely unacceptable.
Tumblr media
another misinterpretation of sasukes entire character and his arcs throughout naruto and shippuden. sasuke only tried to change the shinobi’s view of the uchiha / his clan / their perspective on everything. sasukes entire mindset at the end of the war was that what he came to think he knew and loved were all fallacies to him, nothing or anyone was trustworthy. and the people who made those nightmares responsible for him during childhood were never held accountable and were currently still in power. he wanted to take them out by his own accord because he felt that was justifiable. which it was—they were silent during their own villages massacre of an entire clan they enticed a child to carry out, if I were sasuke I’d be livid upon learning this too. but atlas, no one is angry because no one knows about the extent of how corrupt this was. only sasuke knows the intense pain and suffering of how it feels to be on the side of the oppressed—absolutely no one else other than itachi and madara (and respectively shisui) can understand how sasuke feels. that’s why he wants to eradicate them all, start completely the fuck over. the right way. this wasn’t sasuke trying to save the world “by himself” this was sasuke standing the fuck up for himself and for his fallen brother and family members + clan members. this was what they deserved—justice. and they didn’t fucking get it.
Tumblr media
what friend? the “friend” that beat you into a submissive pulp sasuke and preached that the world would be different because he’s going to wear a cloak and hat representing the village that oppressed you? because this “friend” didn’t have your back after everything was said and done, so how in the hell exactly did he save you sasuke? I really need to be enlightened on why this line was included and why it came from sasuke himself. He’s referring to naruto but the context is all sorts of fucked up. naruto made sasuke submit, he gave sasuke no other option. this wasn’t a friend saving a friend. I don’t know what to even call this but seeing this line come from sasuke really hurt because if they truly indeed saved this man, why does he still look so damn empty?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think the above line is what boruto says to sasuke followed by the second line. I don’t watch boruto to debate the context of this line but he takes it with a grain of salt. “yeah yeah the world isn’t gonna end or anything, people are important blah, so are friends blah, I’ve got all kinda great people around me so what, no big deal I wanna learn ninja shit now”
but this next scene hurts.
Tumblr media
what do people gather from this glance? from this expression? because from all the posts I’ve seen of this, they are assuming sasuke sees through boruto that he’s found people worth being saved by / saving. however I interpret this scene by sasuke expression that he’s still empty, lonely, brooding and lost. this is the expression of a man who didn’t have those so called “good people” along his side when he was growing up. because they were forcing him to submit, trying to hop on his dick and were in turn killed by someone he admired. sasuke cannot relate to these words [spoken by boruto] because in context throughout his whole story, he has never had that experience. I don’t want to say naruto was his “good” people person because let’s face it—he wasn’t. sasukes expression reads in a damning factor that he’s still searching for his “good people” and by the picture I omitted that came before it, no one in the current naruto verse fills this void for him.
this scene just utterly gets me in my feelings when I see it, it’s why I had to take a break from the naruto fandom. because of this scene here. so I decided to break down what exactly pissed me off so bad to the extent that I left.
