Y'know, I always see posts about "shipping isn't about what's canon or what could/should be canon!" and that's true. I 110% agree with that sentiment. But I think the rise of arguments about the canon support of ships comes from a shift in media in the last 10 years, where slash and femslash ships could actually become canon now. We no longer live in the era of There's No Fucking Way It Could Happen. It could happen. When I started shipping Destiel, I knew it would never be canon. There's no fucking way they'd go there. There was nothing deliberate being done in the writer's room.

Then one day something happened on my screen that made me go "wait…did they do that on purpose? No…no way. It could never happen." And then Korrasami went canon. And then Hannigram happened. Both extremely subtle, and done in such a way that straight audiences could deny it, but the creators came forward to say "yes it was canon". And Destiel started becoming more textual. And it took a massive fight, and it bombed at the very end, but Destiel became canon too.

There are queer folks in the writer's rooms, and they're fighting to tell the stories that their queer audiences want to see. Fuck, just look at Velma from Scooby doo! James Gunn tried to make her a textual lesbian in 2001 and was stymied by the studio! But now she's finally, TEXTUALLY, a lesbian in a new Scooby Doo show!

Sure, shipping is about character dynamics. It's playing dolls in your bedroom, clicking the faces of action figures from unrelated cartoons together and creating narratives of your own.

But…sometimes it's canon now.
