obviously Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli would know all about conducting themselves in a courtly manner. Aragorn learned from Elrond and spent time in Gondor beforehand, Legolas is a prince and Gimli is a lord. But it's crucial to me that they forget it all or forget to care. (Because they do forget, in the books and movies. Aragorn's diplomatic skills fly out the window whenever somebody asks for Anduril, Legolas AND Gimli threaten to kill a king's nephew several times over heated words, and they're very used to being filthy, ragged and so wild people mistake them for fairy tales.)
So rather than to imagine they were completely out of their depth as King and Lords after the war of the ring I cling to the belief that they were very bizarre to be around but that it was a conscious choice because they could not be arsed.
It's not that Aragorn doesn't know he's supposed to be waited on, but he's a firm believer in 'eat when you can' and he will gut that wild fowl he caught himself when he's in an official delegation headed to Important Negotiations. It's not that Legolas doesn't know you don't stroll in the middle of a council meeting still muddy and bloodstained from a hunt, he's just on a tight schedule. It's not Gimli doesn't know you're not supposed to sleep on top of the battlements but he's tired and he has a free half hour and that was the closest flat surface. Completely undomesticated behavior all around but in a completely deliberate way.

Okay here to talk Eowyn and how the slights and disrespect she gets are more annoying than listening to Gollum talk to himself all day...
People who act like Aragorn dislikes/disdains her just because he doesn't return her romantic feelings are living in that incel mindset that women can only be admired as matrons or sexual objects. Aragorn the king of wholesome masculinity admires the heck out of Eowyn. Refers to her as the fairest thing in Rohan. He values her friendship and her place as a fundamental bullwark of her people.
People who act like she's somehow pathetic because she falls for someone who doesn't return her affection are not living in reality. They're lost in some Hollywood/porn centric view of romance where women are always sexually desired and if they aren't well then something is wrong with them. Faramir very clearly lays out what happened. She who had been treated rather like a utility in her household meets the last and greatest of the men of Numenor. Truly a man above all others. And of course she's bedazzled. Then there's the fact that he seems to truly see her (albeit on his side just platonic admiration and desire for friendship) and she matters and of course for someone who has been sidelined to tending to her aging uncle this draws her in. There's no fault on Aragorn but as any girl whose femininity and/or personhood has gone largely ignored will tell you it can be quite heady when someone actually notices you as a whole person, femininity included.
And finally her moment with the Witch-King being stolen from her like she did nothing. Ignores all these facts
1. Merry wouldn't have been there to stab him if not for her
2. It's very clearly a dual credit thing both in the passage and in the appendix footnotes
3. Nothing explicitly says that without Merry and his barrow-blade that she couldn't kill the witch-king. She's not a man while Merry is not a Man. The whole thing was based off of an elven prophecy which prophecies seldom are straightforward in their wording and don't even always come true (ask Treebeard) so there's nothing conclusive to say that her jamming a sword in his face wouldn't have done the trick with or without Merry. His role is certainly important because if nothing else prophecy or no he did distract the Witch-King with his blow allowing Eowyn to press an advantage but absolutely nothing there discredits her accomplishment in slaying the Witch-King of Angmar and people trying to act like Merry "made it easy for her" need to shove a barrow-blade where the sun don't shine
Small note here too. People who want to criticize her cooking are wrong in multiple aspects.
A. That's only in the films and a deleted scene at that.
B. It's sexist as hell to base a woman's merit off of her cooking skills. You go hamstring an oliphant and make a souffle then anonymous dudebro hating on Eowyn
C. If you think Eowyn's only accomplishments are "masculine" she does have a great talent with "feminine arts" as in she's a healer and gardener in Ithilien and by virtue of her spouse she's a freaking princess given Faramir is the Prince of Ithilien
So in conclusion if you want to diss Eowyn for any of the above mentioned off base arguments you can kiss Gollum's scrawny arse

People are wrong when they claim that by the end, Éowyn is just “a reward for Faramir.” In truth, it’s the reverse. Éowyn is the one with the greater internal journey - as reflecting on her experience teaches her the value of peace, healing, and growth over war, violence, and death - and Faramir is ultimately her reward for learning to embrace life again. And let’s face it, being a reward, and a wife guy, is exactly what Faramir has always wanted to be, whether he knew it or not.

Finished up my tooled leather pauldron! And decided to throw everything onto the mannequin torso to see how it looks with the rest of it. I’m happy with it! Just need to find two good medieval style buckles for the chest and arm strap (they’re held with leather ties at the moment).  I’ve also made a ton of progress on my camping gear and will be ready to take some pics of that stuff soon. Can’t wait for these 90-100 degree days to be over so I can do some Ranger hiking and camping this fall, and attend Weekend Warrior.

the older i get the more i understand tolkien's obsession with gardens... like maybe tending the soil is an act of love. maybe laying down arms and dwelling in fair ithilien and making a garden there is an act of healing. maybe carrying the earth of a place gone to ruin that will one day restore the ruins of my own place is an act of hope. maybe i will plant saplings that i will not live to see as trees, but one day travellers in great need might come there and find a moment of ease even in the ruin of the garden i have made, and their work will mean that hands come again to tend the ground and make it grow

Faramir and Eowyn Things that give me feels
Faramir teaching her how to read
Eowyn teaching him the speech of the Rohirrim
Their bilingual babies
Eowyn teaching their children riding before they can walk
Faramir reading to them in the womb
Bedtime stories split between tales of Gondor and songs of the Mark
Faramir making sure they know about their brave uncle Boromir
Eowyn taking them to the tomb of Theoden on a trip to see their uncle in Rohan and telling them of their brave grandfather and of his son Theodred who fell before the war
Eowyn and Faramir making sure their children never feel neglected like they had to
The restoration of Ithilien and cleansing of the Morgul Vale
The chance that maybe by the end of their lives a new fair work had replaced Minas Ithil perhaps a garden since no longer was a tower of guard needed
Faramir outliving Eowyn because he is of almost pure Numenorean descent
Naming works started in her life and finished after her death in her honor
Just all the things that they would achieve together and how beautiful they would make the world and how good of parents they would be.
Also Beregond being the most loyal bodyguard ever and probably part time baby sitter and his wife likely becoming the lady in waiting to Eowyn

The thing about Éowyn giving up being a shieldmaiden is that those who complain about it are entirely missing the point.
What she truly wants is not to specifically fight and kill and kick ass in battle. All those things are representations of her actual desire: to be recognized.
She is constantly being cast aside and forced into the corner and left behind, and she wants to actually leave an impactful mark, a legacy, which the society of Rohan will not permit her to create. She directly tells Aragorn that she wants to do great deeds, and she is most afraid of losing her chance to do anything meaningful with massive ripple effects. She has the very human and very relatable need to be seen and noticed and remembered.
She sees all these warriors achieving glory and becoming the subjects of songs on the battlefield, so she thinks that’s her only way. And she fears that once the war is over, there will be no other way, that it will all go back to the way it was for her.
Then by the end, she learns that’s not true. She can do great deeds and achieve recognition post-war, and she does.
She becomes the Princess of Ithilien, a land decimated by war which means she and Faramir essentially get to start from scratch in rebuilding the land and the society. As Faramir’s equal partner, it is up to her, as much as it is up to him, to make the land beautiful again, to decide how it should be run, to mentor the younger generation to take proper care of it all. She can introduce horses to the land and teach people to ride. She can teach self-defense because everyone needs to know that kind of stuff. She can do so many things and make so many major decisions for the benefit of so many people who look up to her and need her.
And above all, Éowyn can shape Ithilien to be what Rohan never was to her: a place where all women are seen and heard and respected.
And the best part is, she gets all the freedom and makes all the impact that she has always dreamed of, and yet she doesn’t have to deal with any of her responsibilities alone. While before she had no support in being Théoden’s nurse, and dealt with it all by herself, now she is surrounded by love and encouragement. She’s got Faramir there to always hold her hand. She’s got supportive friends in Aragorn, Arwen, and Merry.
Éowyn giving up being a shieldmaiden and warrior is not the equivalent of abandoning her dream; it is the equivalent of achieving her dream.

“take the ring? hahahahaha no”
frodo sam and faramir with his rangers discuss in the tent
Image ID under cut
[Image ID (my first time doing this lmk what i can do better ): A tent open in the center is being held by a long wooden pole, two mismatched patches are on the tent’s canvas on the left. It contains three men in chain mail and green , with dark hair. It also contains two halflings, on the left with dark hair , clutching a chain to his chest (Frodo), and the other is crossing his arms and glaring mouth open at the man across from him (Samwise). Both are wearing green cloaks with a leaf brooch and short pants , white tunic and no shoes with hairy feet. Across from them is a man (Faramir) with curly hair , two braids in the front tied with golden ribbon and a green cloak . Underneath is black garments and armor with the White Tree of Gondor symbol on its chest. He is smiling and extending a hand as he explains. The two other men: one on the right with a similar outfit but a belt of chain mail and straight hair pulled to a low ponytail, and the other in the left foreground with a braid and chain mail shirt. Faramir is sitting crisscross on top of a blue grey rug, flowering star pattern in white. There is also a small leather bag spilled open with two papers written on in scribbles and two blue marbles. On the crate to the left there is two leaves , a slice of bread and a small sack. End of ID]
