Flashback: Hero - Mariah Carey
8th Jan 2024
Well, if you were hoping for an exciting brand new #1 single for the beginning of 2024, you're going to be disappointed.
Jack Harlow's 'Lovin On Me' is still exceedingly popular and (minus the Christmas song invasion last week) still hanging onto that top spot. As this is 'Lovin On Me's seventh week at #1, we'll flashback thirty years to 1994 when the #1 single was Bitty McLean's 'It Keeps Raining', which we've already covered. So instead we'll look at the #2 song: Mariah Carey's 'Hero'
You know the song, sing it with me - "and then a HERO comes along!" It sounds like it should be playing as the credits of a Disney movie rolls (one of the nineties Disney movies, obviously! NOT, the 2000's ones), and in fact 'Hero' was originally written by Carey for the 1992 Dustin Hoffman film Hero (to be sung by Gloria Estefan) before she decided to keep the song for herself.
This is one of Mariah's most well known songs, and honestly it's pretty iconic. People know the chorus even if they don't know the song, and it's kind of shocking to me that 'Hero' peaked at #2 and couldn't reach the #1 spot. You're seriously telling me that people preferred Bitty McLean to this? America was actually the only country where 'Hero' made it to #1, but regardless it's a song that has endured a lot more than other songs that did reach the top spot. And on top of that, Mariah has an impressive eight #1 singles on the NZ charts, so I'm sure she's not too cut up about it.
Next week, we'll see if we can maybe, hopefully get a brand new #1. Ariana Grande has new music on the way, as does Kesha, and Lil Nas X, so fingers crossed we get to hear some great music!

CBS‘ newest unscripted musical series is kicking off with a face familiar to the network’s fans: someone who starred on one of its dramas for 14 seasons! LL Cool J, who played Sam Hanna on NCIS: Los Angeles (and will reprise his role in a recurring capacity on NCIS: Hawai’i) is the first artist to feature on Superfan, and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek at the August 9 premiere.
The series, hosted by Nate Burleson and Keltie Knight, features contestants vying in multiple rounds of play to prove they are their favorite artist’s most devoted supporter. In each one-hour episode, a different musical artist will select one deserving superfan to win a once-in-a-lifetime prize.
Burleson tells the five people competing in LL Cool J’s episode to listen as the song begins playing, and it’s Kim who rings in with the correct guess of “Going Back to Cali.” She heads to the winners circle, where Knight is waiting.
Burleson asks LL Cool J, who proudly reps New York, if he had mixed reactions to the hit song. “When we first did the first original demo, I didn’t really like it, so I said, ‘I don’t think so,’” he reveals. But eventually “it became the song that it became.” Watch the full clip above to see why he said, “I don’t think so,” and what he second guessed.
The subsequent episodes of the series will feature musical artists Shania Twain, Gloria Estefan, Little Big Town, Pitbull, and Kelsea Ballerini.
“Nate and Keltie will take you on a fun ride each week with a global music superstar in an exhilarating contest to crown the ultimate superfan, which audiences can play along with at home,” said Jack Sussman, executive vice president of specials, music, live events and alternative programming for CBS, in a statement in April. “Viewers will also be treated to an exclusive medley of hits performed by these mega musicians, which will feel all the more special when performed for their most passionate fans.”

URL MIXTAPE GAME
RULES: PICK A SONG FOR EACH LETTER OF YOUR URL THEN TAG THE SAME NUMBER OF BLOGS
“Yeah, that blog tagging thing’s not gonna happen,” says Sleeves. “Our URL’s way too long, and we’re low on mutuals. But whatever, we’ll play. Shoutout to @themusesthrall for the invite. All songs chosen are from my Sleeves on Axolotl Jukebox playlist on Spotify, except the ones that start with ‘E’, because apparently I don’t believe in ‘E’ songs. Leif, can you spot me on those?”
Manchester gives the thumbs up. “I’ll pull from musical theatre canon.”

Phillip Carl: A Fierce Fighter for What He Believes
He’s all in. On all of it, too.
Go! Team! Go!
He even has patience during this downtown streetscape mayhem, so, yeah, some might think there’s a little something wrong with him, but that’s not what it is. Not at all.
See, Phillip Carl believes, and he believes because he sees people – including his own family – fighting for something. And people don’t fight for something they don’t really want. They just don’t. Not like this. Especially not with their cash-money.
And no one would battle for a town left to rot as a Rust Belt memory if there wasn’t something.
Carl now is the new director of marketing and communications for WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital following a stint with West Liberty University, and he and his bride, Laura, are raising their two daughters – Emma and Elizabeth – right here at home. He’s a Leadership West Virginia graduate, he uses his Facebook account as a promotional page for the Friendly City, and Phil also believes the cool guitar sign for the Bridge Tavern & Grill just might usher in a brand-new era of neon signs in the Friendly City’s downtown district.
Just. Might.
But it won’t matter. Carl will keep his all-in attitude. And he’ll battle, that's for sure. And that’s because he fights for what he believes.
The Carl, including wife Laura and daughters Emma and Elizabeth, enjoy their roadtrips during the summer months.
When you were a kid, what was your favorite spot in Kennywood Park? And what is it today?
My favorites as a child remain my favorite to this day, and it's a tie between two places: the Jack Rabbit – I know its not a cool, steel coaster, and I don't care. It’s a legend – and the Potato Patch. Cheese fries and bacon bits. Ya don't need anything else.
In your opinion, what is the coolest car that’s ever been made, and why?
I’m not a car guy. I do guitars, golf, and bourbon, but I do have a favorite vehicle.
Brand - Jeep. Model - Wrangler. The best vehicle I ever owned was my first vehicle, ‘94 Forest Green Jeep Wrangler, soft top, stick shift. I'm still partial to the two-door, but I like the four-door Rubicons, too.
They're not tremendously practical for a family of four, but maybe one day.
Phil fully support his father, Mike's, venture with the new Bridge Tavern & Grill.
Did you think your uncle and father were crazy for buying the Bridge Tavern and the building it’s located in? Why or why not?
Not for a second. It always made total sense to me. When the conversations first came about, we were deep in the throws of Warwood Tool, so adding another project to the "portfolio" made sense (easy for me to say as the Bridge isn't my money … haha).
I always saw the vision, though, and still do. I've always been optimistic about Wheeling, downtown or otherwise. Maybe naively optimistic, but optimistic, nonetheless. Those two believe in family, community, relationships, and giving something back to a town that gave them so much - and I've always felt the same way.
That's why I never thought it was crazy. Just another opportunity, another adventure.
Explain the importance of music in your life.
My first meaningful memories of music are from my parent’s kitchen as a kid, maybe 10/11 years old, after a day spent on Big Wheeling Creek at a family reunion.
My parent’s house packed with people, food everywhere, beer bottles on a card table, and loud music (usually The Mavericks) permeating the house. Music was always a part of our lives. My mother would blare Elton John and Gloria Estefan, my dad would run through his record collection spanning from Black Sabbath to Michael Jackson.
Music is so deeply connected in our life as a family. It can immediately take you somewhere, feel something. It's a big part of why the Bridge made sense, too. Bring people together around a cold beer, good music, and community fellowship.
Phil and his mother, Maryann, were on hand for the annual Lebanese Festival last weekend.
What meal do you make the best? Care to share the recipe?
I think my family would say my best dish is a ribeye ... no particular recipe. Just a thick cut ribeye, fresh crack S&P, on a searing hot grill - can't go below 450, cooked medium rare - it's a beautiful thing.
The real cooks in family, though, are on my mother’s side. My mother’s family is 100 percent Lebanese, and there's a long history of food there. My Sittoo (grandmother in Lebanese) was a legend in the kitchen. So much so, that one year my family made a cookbook of all her recipes and gave it out at my mother’s (I think) 40th birthday - organized by appetizers, soups, mains, deserts.
It's a legit publication – haha. It’s still kept top secret to this day, but I am attempting to learn her Grape Leaves. That’s probably my favorite thing to make.
