Imagine looking for your son and finding 215 bodies.

It wasn’t until 172 excruciating days after his disappearance that Bettersten learned the truth: Dexter had been killed less than an hour after he’d left home, struck by a Jackson police car as he crossed a nearby interstate highway. Police had known Dexter’s name, and hers, but failed to contact her, instead letting his body go unclaimed for months in the county morgue. Now it was early October, and Bettersten had finally been told where she could find her son. She pulled up to the gates of the Hinds County penal farm, her sister in the passenger seat. A sheriff’s deputy and two jumpsuited inmates in a pickup told her to follow them.

They bounced down the road and curved into the woods, crawling past clearings where rows of small signs jutted from the earth, each marked with a number.

“Girl, look at this,” Bettersten, 65, said to her sister. “Would you believe they would bury someone out here?” The caravan came to the end of the road, at another clearing with more markers. The deputy took one of Bettersten’s hands, her daughter the other, and they walked to the mounds of loosely packed dirt. They stopped at grave No. 672. “Really?” Bettersten said.

She bent over, hands on her knees. She cried out, her voice echoing off the surrounding trees. “I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.”

The list was provided by the county coroner’s office in response to a public records request. The office said in an email that it did not have a list of those buried earlier: "Records before 2016 could not be located. "

I know there’s a lot to love about Percy Jackson but I really think his fatal flaw is what gets us all. I think the super-protective, loyal-to-a-fault, ride-or-die, shortsighted tunnel-visioned simplicity of him is what we like so much. Other heroes, like Luke Skywalker or Zuko or Superman, hear about who their fathers are or what their heritage is and it just riddles them with angst and melodrama. And we love them too.

But Percy spends much less time going “who am I and what is the deep metaphysical purpose of my being?” and much more time going, “I don’t care if I just learned Minotaurs are real and I’ve lost fights with middle-schoolers before: it has my mom, so one of us is going to die on this hill.”

There’s just this simplicity to him. He just goes with his gut. He can learn a devastating secret or world-bending truth, and then two seconds later, be like, “cool, what’s next?” because his gut so consistently responds to every situation with “I’m either going to protect the people I love or die making fun of the bad guys.”

tags: fighting (luke & percy), luke is an asshole, protective percy

luke already did not like percy, but after the two of you broke up and you started dating percy, he was furious!

and percy was well aware of that. it was hard to ignore those glares he got from luke whenever he was holding your hand or kissing you in public

though the two of you did try to ignore luke as best as you could – which didn't always work out!

luke would be the one searching for an opportunity to talk to the two of you and attempt to cause trouble

he'll often remind percy that he already took all your firsts and that you'll always be more attached to luke than percy

the two of them are often close to getting physical with their fights, but by now the campers know that if those two are talking with each other, it's better to seperate them as soon as possible

percy tries to not let luke's words get to him, but there are times where he'll get quite upset about luke's comments

you're always there to calm him down and comfort him and that usually helps

but still, percy doesn't like the way luke treats you, even after your break up, and he really wants to teach that guy a lesson and shut him up for good!
