A place where, to be honest, I let Nureyev fall. No wonder he was scared, no wonder I was too. But how the hell are we supposed to get past that?

fun facts about the names of the penumbra podcast characters (junoverse specifically cause i haven't watched the other one)

nureyev was a famous male ballet dancer, and peter/petya means rock! petya (the name slip calls nureyev) is actually a female name, as well as being the name of a family of malware. the surname nureyev and the name petya are both russian/eastern european, despite the names of outer rim planets being from a variety of cultures (brahma is a hindu creator god, ranga is an australian word, balder (aka baldur) is a norse god of light and beauty, yama is a hindu god of death/the underworld/justice, osiris is an egyptian god of the afterlife that judged souls, susano-o is a japanese god of thunderstorms).

aurinko means sun! buddy obviously is another word for friend

vespa means wasp, and ilkay means new moon.

so buddy and vespa are literally eachothers sun/moon awwwwww

rita means pearl and is a greek word

juno is the roman goddess of marriage and childbirth, but unlike in greek mythology she has a more warlike aspect! steel is used as a metaphor for being strong and hardy, as well as coming from germanic origins and relating to the german word stahl, to stay.

jet is a type of black semi-precious stone, plus y'know. jet engines, etc. sikuliaq is a boat! a research vessel actually, and the word means 'young sea ice' in the native Iñupiaq language.

m'tendere means peace in chichewa, a language spoken in zambia, malawi, mozambique and zimbabwe

kanagawa means 'god sound river' and is also a city! croesus basically means rich, croesus was a rich king of lydia (also the last king). cecil means blind to ones own beauty or sixth, but i prefer the first interpretation because cecil wears loads of makeup and trys really hard to be this big personality, missing his true beauty on the inside. cassandra was an ancient greek prophetess who was cursed to always see the truth but never be believed, and her documentary ideas making money when she was told they wouldn't is very cool. min means 'minute', 'from' and 'quick' or 'clever' in abbreviations, arabic and korean respectively.

Since it was just my birthday, here’s how the Aurinkos would feel about their birthday:

Juno: used to hate his birthday a lot because his brother wasn’t there to celebrate with him anymore but doesn’t mind as much now and sees it as a way to honor Ben

Rita: loves her birthday but often forgets when it’s coming and Juno has to remind her, he also always gets her something without fail

Buddy: likes her birthday a bit, grew to like it as a young adult, mostly to get free drinks and the like, used to celebrate with a cake when she could actually eat food

Vespa: hates her birthday, anyone who mentions it is dead to her, Buddy tried to throw her a birthday surprise the first time they dated and they almost broke up, will now tolerate a private ‘happy birthday’ from Buddy and only Buddy

Jet: is pretty indifferent about his birthday, will tolerate Buddy’s attempt to celebrate but will not celebrate himself of his own free will

Peter: doesn’t like his birthday, he used to celebrate with the pests as a child but stopped celebrating with Mag who just forgot about it, will refuse to tell people his birthday of his own free will but Juno gets to tell him happy birthday and give him a cupcake or something

Ruby: of course it hates its birthday, the mysterious past says it all, might not even know what a birthday really is

I love the concept of Vespa, Jet, or Buddy trying to approach Rita about Nureyev’s real name. Obviously, they know Juno knows it, and maybe they assume she does too. Her hesitation at the start of season 3, they reason, is more because she isn’t sure which alias of his to use. So they ask Rita- for a name, for information, for anything.

She chatters about how he was named Rex Glass at one point, with these really sharp teeth that Mister Steel couldn’t stop staring at-he was so charming, too, almost made him being a dark matters agent okay. But then, he wasn’t really a Dark Matters agent, was he? - wait, wait just a goddamned second, Vespa’s hissing, he got in and out of dark matters by himself?? - Well, he was a Christopher Morales for a bit, but then there was the business with the Martian teleporters and the Saffron Prince of Mars - Buddy tries to interject and inform that she’s never heard of Mars having royalty, but Rita bulldozes over that- and plus Christopher Morales never really existed so maybe that don’t count. Oh! But Mister Steel told her about how he and Duke Rose played a card game with a guy named… she struggles for a second… Brocken something Anglestorm or other - here, Jet pauses, face goes dark with thought and chest-tightening memories - and then they stole a big bomb that only killed Martians and then used it to kill a Martian and she doesn’t really remember what the question was but hey do you think Mister ransom would wanna play cards with them at the next family game night??

Jet grunts, hands flexing into tight fists. Vespa looks like she might kill someone, or faint. And Buddy’s eyebrows are fixed into a look of… well. Terror, maybe? Confusion, definitely. All three of them walk off, and any interruptions to their brooding over the next few hours are met with snappy comments about names and stupid thieves.
