Sorceress was a logical continuation of Opeth’s last two albums, far removed from the death metal of old and fully committed to ‘70s prog worship. But there was a bit more fun to be had this time around, and “Chrysalis” felt more like Deep Purple than Camel. Mikael Åkerfeldt was no Ian Gillan, but Joakim Svalberg and especially Martin Axenrot brought serious Jon Lord and Ian Paice vibes. The track had the same ‘70s fetishism that defined Opeth’s work from Heritage forward, and reminded that Åkerfeldt was fully invested in following his muse even if it annoyed a good chunk of his fanbase. But again, there was more of a spring in everyone’s step, which made “Chrysalis” enjoyable in its own right and not just pastiche.
