In the future year 2021, megacorporations turn a blind eye to the suffering masses for profit and power while underground rebels fight back in the name of freedom. It’s a staple of the cyberpunk genre & its statement is as relevant today as it was in 1995.

JOHNNY MNEMONIC is a bonkers film. It revels in its concepts & ambitions, it excels in its imaginative & efficient visual design and it shines in its propulsive, no-bullshit script penned by the father of cyberpunk himself, William Gibson.

There’s an almost eerie prescience in its depiction of “future” tech, VR & the internet, and the extent to which society has become immersed in &/or reliant on it.

It feels like a proto-Matrix film as we can see how both films were rooted in similar influences, yet each forged its own distinct link in the evolutionary chain of science fiction films.

The exemplary ensemble casting cannot be understated. With Keanu Reeves, Dina Meyer, Ice-T, Dolf Lundgren, Takeshi Kitano, Henry Rollins & Udo Kier, it’s hard to say which performance stands out the most. Is it Dolf’s Jesus freak cyborg, brandishing a Rambo-sized blade the shape of a cross? Is it Dina’s scrappy, street savvy bodyguard for hire? Is it Rollins’ anti-establishment ranting, aggro-paranoid cyber-doctor? Or Ice-T’s lippy leader of the hacker revolution, an anarchy symbol scrawled onto his forehead, spitting lines like “It’s payback time”? Is it the dolphin?!!

A tip of the hat to Robert Longo for pulling all the strings together in his directorial debut, bringing this dystopian & prophetic masterpiece to the screen!
