MONTHLY MEDIA: July 2023
Summertime! Full of good vibes and a bunch of good movies I’ve yet to see. Here’s how I spent the month of July.

Barbie (2023)
Just incredible. As an artist who works with existing properties overseen by a lot of people, I was amazed at just how deep, critical, and weird this movie was able to get. I truly had no idea where it was going. Funnier and sillier than I expected but am so thrilled that this wasn’t a generic cash-in.
Lupin the Third: The Mystery of Mamo (1978)
Years ago I saw a poster by Sam Bosma and that was both my first introduction to Lupin and the reason I wanted to check him out as a character. Going in mostly blind (aside from knowing the main character is a master thief), this movie was weirder, hornier, and way more avant garde than I was expecting! Some really cool animation on display and while the pacing is up and down, I can’t recommend it enough. The main villain reminded me of a mix between Akira’s espers and Paul Williams and turns out Swan from Phantom of the Paradise was an inspiration! So wild.

Jury Duty (Episode 1.01 to 1.04)
The premise is fun and just when I thought it was starting to dip it turns out the fictional case is compelling too so I’m BACK! Very keen to see how the season ends and what Ronald makes of this in the end.
Mashle (Episode 1.01 to 1.12)
This series seems to answer the question: what if Harry Potter was a meathead with no magic? It didn’t really hooked me and the characters are kinda thin but it has moments of wonderful goofiness that I’m glad I finished out the season.
The Bear (Episode 1.04 to 1.08)
Just when I thought the show was getting less stressful, the characters pointed out that fact! Then the following episodes ramped up the stress again. But it never feels contrived or unnatural. Everything, from the humor to the stakes to the character interactions, feels wholly organic. Like we’re watching real people live out real lives. I dunno I guess what I’m saying is it’s really good.

I’ve been watching a lot of videos about transit lately (like this series by Vox) but the above video is probably the most important one you can watch. His entire Strong Towns series is great and succinctly explains why north american cities suck and keep getting worse. Vote for elected officials that push for density.

Real shift from bikes and cities but I keep thinking about this video. Speculative stuff rarely hits for me but this is really great and hits all the right notes for the series. Really wish this sorta stuff could get made.

I think it was a mistake to keep the original article/essay that inspired this book at the beginning. I found the points made were clearer and more succinct in the condensed version and the book’s tone seems to waffle. There are some good ideas in here but I think it needed more time in the oven. If anything, read the article and the last chapter and I think you’d be good.

The Mof1 Crew is currently on the run after the retiring couple they kidnapped escaped but I’m sure everything will work out just fine.

The group is still navigating a group of elves on the island and seeing what happens now that they’ve let their star-collecting duties slip. Big trouble. You can read about it here.

Current fic: i am honestly hesitant to say lol because i am reading a 130k fic right now but it is so so dead dove that i kinda don't want to name it. but it's so good. also reading victim by a_hispida, who writes some of the best yashisato fic around, and the soldier and the thespian by defectzero
Writing: hooo boy, do i have some wips. so: how deep the bullet lies, my longfic askelives au; a currently unnamed askefinn au where askeladd was not the one who killed thors and thorfinn is a slave; another unnamed au where askeladd was hired to kill thors when thorfinn was a baby, (bad) shenanigans happen and askeladd raises baby thorfinn; a short rolo-centric code geass oneshot; several ffxv one-shots, including one where noctis gets zombie-fied and one where he has cotard's syndrome; and of course non sequitur, my yashisato longfic which continues to languish in hiatus because it is so so annoying to write, but which i still hope to finish one day

Was your life better or worse or the same five years ago?
A lot better. 2015 was the year of my grandfather dying, the slow death of a relationship, and me facing the massive pressure that came with taking college entrance exams. It wasn’t my favorite year. 2020 isn’t a lot better by any means, but it still hasn’t given me the same level of emotional turmoil so that’s good enough for me.
Would you rather visit NYC, LA, or Chicago?
Chicago. It’s been my dream city for a while, thanks to CM Punk and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Have you ever been to Chicago?
I haven’t.
Would you ever want to live in a big city?
I do want to live in a big city; I want to end up living somewhere busy and where there’s lots of city noise, construction noise, trains, cars, etc. Considering I’ve always lived in gated villages, I’ve grown quite tired of how quiet and monotonous it can be here.
Does your first crush know they were your first crush?
Nah. We’ve also grown apart in the last decade so there’ll never be an appropriate time to raise it with her anymore. It’s just better off being a secret kept with me.
What color is your favorite laundry basket?
I don’t have a favorite; the one I mainly use is brown.
How old were you when you got your first smartphone?
17...I was a late bloomer lol. I broke so many phones before that so I understood my parents’ apprehension in getting me a smartphone. Before I had my own, Athenna would typically lend me her old 4S, back when she was still nice to me, and us.
What is your favorite app on your phone?
These days my favorite is Reddit as all other social media have been a little stressful to stay in. Reddit at least gives me a mix of everything, from the news, to funny content, to trivia, to interesting AskReddits, etc.
What is the background on your phone?
A shot of Beyoncé and Jay-Z on tour is my lock screen and Hayley Williams is my home screen.
What is your favorite thing to do in the swimming pool?
Just float around, lol. I don’t move a lot in swimming pools because I don’t like how chlorine-y/slimy most of them feel. I prefer to be at the beach.

No.
What is the biggest city you've lived in (if you want to answer)?
Manila.
Do you own an American flag shirt?
I don’t think so. I’m so not interested in one.
Did you get your personality from your mom or your dad, or neither?
I think it’s a mix of both. I got my shyness from my dad, but I can also be tense and uptight like my mom.
Will you be eating bbq chicken this July 4th?
I don’t care for that day.
Would you rather wear red, white, or blue?
I’d go with red, I find that it suits me best out of these three.
Have you ever lit fireworks in your backyard?
Not in the backyard but on the road outside of our house. It was New Year’s Eve and no one was driving that night anyway, so it was safe to put fireworks out on the street.

Of course.
What does your middle name rhyme with?
Carousel.
Are there any redheads in your family?
Nope.
Who do you know who is allergic to nuts?
Nah, just people from movies and shows I’ve watched hahaha.
What is your favorite type of tree?
I don’t really have a favorite tree.
Are you superstitious?
I’m just a tad bit neurotic about one superstition but otherwise I don’t believe in any other.
Would you ever consider getting dreadlocks?
No.
When was the last time you drank tea?
I think it was a few months ago when we were served free hot tea at North Park.
Have you downloaded extra fonts for your computer?
Just once, for layout class. Our class decided on a font that I didn’t have, so I had to get it from the internet.
Do you have photoshop?
No. I have Indesign, though.
What type of phone do you have?
iPhone 8.
What is one interesting fact about you?
I had a green-blue birthmark on my right arm as an infant that never completely faded away, so I have a slight discoloration left on the same spot until now that looks black/greyish.
What color are your walls?
They are white. My mom gave us little say as to how we wanted our rooms to look like when they were first building them, so I had no choice even though I wanted baby blue walls.
Who taught you how to drive a car?
My dad taught me to drive around our village, then I also had brief lessons from a driving school when it came to driving on the highway.
What is your favorite candy bar?
Twix or Butterfinger.
At what time of day do you feel the best?
I’m on break from staying up late at the moment since I’m still recovering from my fever, but midnight beyond with my coffee and lofi music is my favorite period of the day.
Are there a lot of mosquitoes where you live?
Too many. Dengue is a common disease here.
What does your swimsuit look like?
Idk, I have several.
Who is the latest great youtuber you've discovered?
Haven’t really discovered anyone new lately. I’ve been on Netflix more these days, too.
Do you read the Bible regularly?
Hard fucking pass on that.
What color is your dresser?
Brown.
Do you own any antique furniture?
Welp, the aircon in my room is pretty antique hahaha it’s older than I am but still works like a charm. Other than that, all the antique furniture that I know of are in my grandma’s place, where they’ve always been.
Would you ever want to live in a castle?
I don’t think so. I want to live in a big place, but a castle isn’t my preferred style.
What is your favorite cold drink from Starbucks?
Caramel macchiatooooooo.
Do you consider yourself "trendy"?
Egh, only to a certain extent. I make sure I’m at least not outdated, but I also don’t feel the need to buy all the trendy things making the rounds.

That is not my first or forty-eighth choice of music.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Cookies and cream.
Do you like your hair better long or short?
Nowadays, short.
Do you like your hair better curly or straight?
Wavy.
Which major holiday is closest to your birthday?
Usually it’s Easter, no matter when the church decides it’s going to be.
Have you ever had an outdoor birthday party?
No, my parties have always been indoors.
Has it ever snowed on your birthday?
-600% chance of that happening.
Do you like the way your name is spelled?
Sure, I’m not complaining. I get more misspellings with it but then again it’s also commonly accepted as the feminine spelling of the name, so at least people don’t go around calling me Sir/Mr.
Are you close with any of your cousins?
I’m close with my first and most of my second cousins on my mom’s side. There’s some work to be done with cousins on my dad’s side, as we barely talk lol. We don’t dislike each other, we just live far from one another and have little in common to boot.
Who is your favorite cousin?
The eldest cousin on my mom’s side, who’s pretty much my older brother because of how close we are.
Do you really think that light blonde is the best hair color?
I never even thought that to begin with.

Idk, I like green ones the most.

Several! I have scratch marks on my stomach from when my skin was really sensitive and i scratched too hard, i have a few self harm scars, i have a scar next to my eye from when i was 2 and i tripped in the bathroom, i have several on my hands from my cat and i have one on my knee from when i had a leg infection and they sliced open my knee so they could remove it!

Sadly yes and I've thought about it recently but i haven't so im doing good!

I almost got hit with a train when i was 5, i almost drowned when i was 10 or 11, i was almost trampled by cows (twice) when i was 11, and i almost fried myself 2 months ago!

My grandma died a week after i was born but she neglected my mom so no one cared, my grandpa died last year on march 15th i think.

And earlier today, they posted a new demo w/lyrics to StreetVoice. I adore their unison male/female vocals and on this tune, the synths are more percussive than usual, kind of a steel drum sound.

Every year it's the same music listening cycle I swear to god:
January: literally just instrumental hiphop, jazz, and podcasts
February: the world is so big and huge and there are so many music genres I want to listen to them all please and become hyperfocused on one niche specific genre please.
March: Irish punk music
April: traditional music from various countries. Usually China.
May: pop punk, Ska punk, etc. Etc. Because it's summer now and I'm a teenager.
June: more punk with some more chilled folk music added in. More pop and "Aesthetic" music.
July: the silliest tunes. The funniest bangers. Songs about erectile dysfunction and bad boy band music. Critiques of capitalism in acapella.
August: the back to school vibes are set. Nostalgic classics are here to stay.
September: romantic music or the soundtrack I made for my current fixation (mixed bag month)
October: HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN jazz AND HALLOWEEN (especially obscure 1920s tunes)
November: folk mostly. I listen to the soundtracks of Wes Anderson movies and walk through the fall leaves. Podcasts return to my daily listening schedule (especially Welcome To Nightvale)
December: Christmas tunes, more and more jazz, lots of lofi, traditional ska/reggae.

What are each of the Creepy Noodle's aesthetics?
YES MY TIME HAS COME this is a long post btw.
Slender - Dark Spring, saturated purples and dark greens, old moss-covered trees, rolling thunderstorms yet to begin. Silence and the smell of earth. An uneasy loneliness that tugs at your heartstrings.
Splendor - Summer meadows, warm rays of light, the taste of vanilla cupcakes. Silly songs and rich gardens. The feeling of being connected to a close friend.
Trendy - Rainy nights. Coffee stained sketchbook papers and the sound of an electric kettle. lofi hip-hop music playing softly in the background of a dimly lit room.
Offender - Empty houses, chipping paint and velvet seats. Dark gray and maroon. Stained wineglasses and the smell of ash. A caving loneliness broken up by sparks from the fireplace.
Zalgo - Ruined castles. Tall ceilings with beautiful (and dirty) stained glass windows. Soot-stained marble and the smell of fire. The booming roar of thunder outside followed by uneasy silence.
Jeff - Purple smoke, the smell of lilac and regret. Painful anxiety and the warmth of a familiar jacket. Missing someone who you can’t quite name. The sound of a creek after it rains.
Liu - Cedar wood and wool scarves. The feeling of rediscovering an old toy or game. Birds chirping early in the morning. Watching cartoons while eatng fruity pebbles and wearing your favorite pajamas.
Jane - A vast, starry sky, an unsolved Rubix cube. Ripped lace and torn stockings. Feeling lost in a place you know well. Being told where you’re going but not how you’re going to get there.
Sally - Sneaking downstairs on Christmas morning, the excitement of sparklers on the 4th of july. Lofthouse cookies and chocolate milk. Sleeping with your favorite stuffed animal.
Lazari - Going somewhere new for the first time. Nutella and banana sandwhiches. Violet bubbles and strawberry milk. Fuzzy socks against white and black floor tiles.
Clockwork - Smudged black eyeliner, bloody guitar strings. The graffiti- covered underside to a bridge. A subtle feeling of broiling rage and loneliness.
LJ - Abandoned amusement parks, faded spraypaint, and fresh butterscotch. The sound of shanty music followed by the sensation of lonely nights and screaming.
Helen - Paintsplattered floorboards, faded gray walls, and cups stained with rings of rainbows. The feeling of intense focus and the warmth of the sun filtering in through the open window.
Jason - The excitement of a roadtrip, the euphoria of dancing in the dark with your closest friend, and the warmth of a diner at 2am. Paintsplattered mustang doors and the DD album blasting.
Puppet - Soft gray sweaters, tiny yellow flowers, hummed tunes. Quiet walks in the park and gazing at the lives of others. Sonder feelings. Cool breezes fluttering over your exposed nose and cheeks.
BEN - Graphic t-shirts and clean new shoes. The smell of lilly air fresheners mixed with the plastic of a console. An old buzzing noise from a TV in the 90′s or early 2000′s.
Toby - Bright friendship bracelets and coca-cola in the glass bottle. Nervously holding hands with someone when you’re scared. Orange and dark blue. The feeling of sleeping in all day.
Tim - Empty parking garages, old structures in the woods. Sarcastic arguing early in the morning while sipping on bitter coffee. The taste of pill capsules mixed with cold soda. Pecan pie.
Brian - Staring at the clouds, tall grass in medows, and soft music fluttering from old headphones. Being excited about your favorite shirt being out of the wash. Apple fritters.
Eyeless - Fairy lights and freckles, being excited about your favorite book/musical/movie. The sinking feeling of numbness and the sensation of being left out and alone. The sight of burned ruins that once was a happy home.
