I just had a thought.

If Billy had lived after S3 (and Hopper didn’t get taken by Russians and the Byers didn’t move away), what if during his recovery Max or someone was finally explaining the Upside Down to him, and that explains the night in S2 at the Byers’. The fact that all those people were there with the sole purpose of getting the Mind Flayer out of Will is brought up in passing and without much thought. That everyone present cared so deeply about Will Byers that they stopped at nothing to get it out.

All Billy can think about after that, when he’s alone, is that none of them tried or really wanted to help him. He knows he was an absolute asshole… but still. Even though they knew the damage it did to Will and how powerless he was to it, still nobody cared enough. Just imagining those intense feelings of loneliness he probably felt during S3 surfacing while he’s awake at night. He’s just generally depressed after that, not entirely sure how to interact with anyone now that he has this knowledge. Always on the verge of crying. Whether it be the guilt of what the Mind Flayer made him do or the knowledge that no one actually wanted to save him.

Yeh I’ve just made myself sad.
